Since I grew up in England with a British father and a Chinese mother, I’ve enjoyed food from both countries ever since I was able to hold a knife and fork — and chopsticks!
Mum has sweet memories of the food from her hometown in Sichuan, and often cooks spicy dishes. On account of this, Dad has come to love hot pot! But there are still some dishes that Dad dare not try even after many years of marriage to my mother. He once told me he was surprised by what he saw on the table when he first visited my mother’s parents in China. He was even shocked at their wedding when he saw how the Chinese ate almost every part of an animal. Even today, he still does not easily take to eating things like chicken feet.
But I enjoy that sort of food myself. Last week, I went to the butcher’s and asked, “Do you have pigs’ ears?” “No,” the butcher (屠夫) said, pulling at his own ears, “just these ordinary ones.” He must have thought I was joking. Dad can cook a super “full English breakfast” of bacon, eggs, beans, sausages and toast with butter. Mum and I just have to find a way to get him into the kitchen! He also does a typical Sunday roast. We all love roast beef and vegetables, but Mum says we’d better not eat too much roast food as it may make us suffer from heat inside our bodies, according to traditional Chinese medicine.
I’ll never forget my visit to China. Mum encouraged me to try different kinds of food, and I did! I loved everything. But just when I thought I could deal with all Chinese food, I came across stinky tofu, a terrible grey thing that looked and smelt like a burnt sports shoe. “You needn’t try it if you don’t want to,” Mum said, but I gathered all my courage to take a bite and was amazed to find it wasn’t that bad. It reminded me of blue cheese, a similarly strong smelling type of food you either love or hate. Maybe I’ll fall in love with stinky tofu someday.
People say that one man’s meat is another man’s poison, but I feel at home with different food from both China and Britain. To me, there’s nothing better than a cross-cultural afternoon tea of English biscuits and a cup of Chinese oolong tea in a fine china cup!
24.What kind of food does the author like?
    A. He likes all kinds of Chinese food especially stinky tofu.
    B. He is really interested in roast food.
    C. He will never get used to some Chinese food.
    D. He enjoys eating almost every part of an animal.

    B. The butcher disliked some food cooked with pig ear.
    C. The author always liked to play tricks on the butcher.
    D. Pigs’ ears are ordinary in Britain.

More than half the world’s population live in cities, and by 2050 the UN expects that proportion to reach 68%. This means more homes, roads and other infrastructure(基础设施). Such a construction boom does harm to tackling climate change, though, because making steel and concrete generates around 8% of the world’s carbon-dioxide emissions. If cities are to expand and become greener at the same time, they will have to be made from something else.
As it happens, wood is becoming one of the most promising sustainable alternatives to steel and concrete. It is not, however, everyday wood but a material called engineered timber, composed of different layers for specific purposes. Besides engineering the shape of a component, designers can arrange the grains (纹理) in the layers to provide levels of strength that equal steel, in a product that is up to 80% lighter. Engineered timber is, moreover, usually assembled into large sections of a building in a factory. That cuts down on the number of deliveries that have to be made to a construction site.
All this makes a difference to carbon-dioxide emissions. Michael Ramage of the University of Cambridge told the meeting of a 300-square-metre four-storey wooden building that generated 126 tonnes of CO2. Had it been made with concrete, emissions would have risen to 310 tonnes. If steel had been used, they would have topped 498 tonnes. Indeed, from one point of view, this building might actually be viewed as “carbon negative”. When trees grow, they lock carbon up in their wood — in this case the equivalent of 540 tonnes of CO2, representing a long-term reduction of CO2 from the atmosphere.
If building with wood takes off, it does raise concern about there being enough trees to go round. But with sustainably managed forests that should not be a problem, says Dr Ramage. A family-sized apartment requires about 30 cubic metres of timber, and he estimates Europe’s sustainable forests alone grow that amount every seven seconds. Nor is fire a risk, for engineered timber does not burn easily, because the inner cores of large structural timbers are protected by a charring (炭化) layer if burnt.

28.What is the problem mentioned in Para. 1?
A.It is very hard to build more homes, roads and other infrastructure.
B.Steel and concrete generates most carbon-dioxide emissions.
C.Cities can’t go greener because they expand quickly.
D.The expansion of cities may cause environmental damage.
    29. What can we know about the engineered timber?

B.The engineered timber was designed with the strength that equal steel.
C.The steel is up to 80% lighter than engineered timber.
D.The engineered timber doesn’t generate any carbon dioxide.
30.Where can you find this passage?
    A.Website. B.News paper. C.Magazine. D.Brochure

    Wireless Charging
    Deliver Electricity through the Air
A wireless charging room has been developed by scientists. It can deliver power through the air to any laptop, tablet or phone without the need for plugs(插头) or cables.
The new technology involves generating magnetic fields over longer distances without also producing electrical fields that would prove harmful to any people or animals within the room, according to the team from the University of Tokyo.
The system, which has been tested in a single room but is still in its infancy (在初始阶段), can deliver up to 50 watts of power without going beyond current guidelines for human exposure to magnetic(磁力) fields, the study authors explained. It could be used to charge any device with a wire coil (电线圈) fitted inside, similar to the system used with wireless charging pads currently in use—but without the pad. As well as removing bundles of charging cables from desks, it could allow for more devices to be fully robotized without the need for ports, plugs or cables.
To demonstrate the new system, they installed the unique wireless charging device in a purpose-built “test room” that was 10 feet by 10 feet. They then used it to power lamps, fans and mobile phones that drew current from anywhere in the room, regardless of where furniture or people had been placed.
Researchers didn’t say what the technology might cost because it is still very early in development and “years away” from being made available to the public. “This really ups the power of the ubiquitous (无所不在的) computing world-you could put a computer anywhere without ever having to worry about charging or plugging in,” said study coauthor Alanson Sample from the University of Michigan.
There are also clinical applications, according to Sample, who said heart implants currently require a wire from the pump to run through the body. “This could eliminate that,” the author said, adding it would act to reduce the risk of infection and improve patients’ quality of life by eliminating the wire completely.
32.What is true about the wireless charging room according to the text?
    A. It can generating magnetic fields over longer distances.
    B. It can deliver up to 50 watts of power without any device with wire coil .
    C. It only could be used to charge some devices.
    D. The cable is necessary in the new technology.
33.What does the underlined word in Para. 6 mean?
    A. Artificial B. Experimental. C. Typical. D. Medical.
34.What can we infer from this text?
    A. The technology must be applied in a purpose-built room.
    B. People can benefit a lot from this technology.
    C. Heart plants can be very easy with the new technology.
    D. The technology will power all the machines in the future.
35.What’s the purpose of the text?
    A. To persuade. B. To advertise. C. To inform. D. To educate.

It had been a year since Susan, an attractive young woman of 34 , became blind and she was suddenly thrown into a world of darkness, anger, frustration and self-pity. And all she had to cling to was her husband, Mark.
Mark, an Air Force officer, loved Susan with all his heart and he was determined to help his wife gain the strength and confidence she needed to become independent again.
Finally, Susan felt ready to return to her job, but how would she get there? Mark volunteered to drive her to work each day even though they worked at opposite ends of the city.
At first, this comforted Susan. Soon, however, Mark decided that Susan had to start taking the bus again on her own. But she was still so fragile, so angry-how would she react?
Just as he predicted, Susan was horrified by the idea of taking the bus again. “ How am I supposed to know where I am going? I feel like you're abandoning me,” she responded bitterly.
Mark’s heart broke to hear these words, but he knew what had to be done. He promised Susan that he would ride the bus with her, for as long as it took, until she got the hang of it.
For two solid weeks, Mark, in a military uniform and all, accompanied Susan to and from work each day. He taught her everything to adapt to the new environment, including befriending the bus drivers who could watch out for her, and save her a seat.
Finally, Susan decided to try the trip on her own. The Monday morning arrived. She said goodbye to Mark, and for the first time, they went their separate ways.
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday... Each day on her own went perfectly, and Susan had never felt better. She was doing it!
On Friday morning, as she was paying the fare to get off the bus as usual, the driver said, “Young lady, I do envy you.”
Surprised and curious, she asked the driver, “Why do you say that you envy me?”
    Paragraph 1:
The driver responded, “It must be wonderful to be taken good care of and protected like you everyday.” ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 2:
With tears of happiness in her eyes, she stood motionlessly facing the opposite side of the street as if gazing at someone. ______________________________________________________________________

The driver responded, “It must be wonderful to be taken good care of and protected like you every day.” Confused by what the driver said, she asked, “What do you mean?” The driver answered, “Every morning in the past week, a good-looking gentleman in a military uniform has been standing across the street watching you get off the bus. He makes sure you cross the street safely and he watches until you enter your office building. Then he blows you a kiss, gives you a little salute and walks away. You are a lucky lady. ”
    Paragraph 2:
With tears of happiness in her eyes, she stood motionlessly facing the opposite side of the street as if gazing at someone. Although she couldn’t physically see him, she definitely felt Mark’s presence. Susan thought she was actually lucky, for he had given her a gift more powerful than sight, a gift of love that can bring light where there is darkness. Just as Mark grew a litter worried,he saw his wife break into a radiant smile and blow a kiss to his direction. Finally she found back herself, blind but attractive and confident as she used to be.

根据第一段中的 “Such a construction boom does harm to tackling climate change, though, because making steel and concrete generates around 8% of the world’s carbon-dioxide emissions.”
Besides engineering the shape of a component, designers can arrange the grains (纹理) in the layers to provide levels of strength that equal steel, in a product that is up to 80% lighter.
    30. A。 根据文章最后一段 “Please click here to get more information.”
    32. A。 从第二段第一句 “The new technology involves generating magnetic fields over longer distances” 可知,无线充电室这项新技术涉及产生更远距离的磁场,故选择A项。
    33. D。 根据后文 “according to Sample, who said heart implants currently require a wire from the pump to run through the body.”
根据最后一段最后一句 “the author said, adding it would act to reduce the risk of infection and improve patients’ quality of life by eliminating the wire completely.”

37.F。下文 “They do so by trying to analyze and find where the opposite ideas are from.” They承接上文设空处,many people符合语境,故选F。
38.C。根据段落标题 “ Start to ask questions (开始提问题)” 以及下文 “Therefore, we might as well see something from the perspective (视角) of others. ” 因此,我们要从别人的角度看问题。C选项“询问更多的信息可以帮助你更多地了解一个人的观点。”符合语境。
    39.B。本段的主旨大意是“”当试图理解一个问题的两面时,重要的是要知道事实和观点之间的区别。B选项“知道事实和观点的区别”总结本段大意,符合语境。

    Text 10.
M: You might be excited or scared, but either way, the first winter storm of the season is coming. It will be moving across the country beginning on Wednesday of night. The first area that will be affected will be the dry fields of North and South Dakota as well as eastern Minnesota. Thursday will be very bad in these areas. By Friday, the storm will have moved toward the Fast Coast, and it will continue to bring snow as it heads up int Canada and The Great Lakes area. Eastern Ohio and PennsyIvania should be seeing snow start to fall early Saturday, continuing through Sunday as the storm moves into New York and dies out. The snowfall totals will be four to eight inches in most places, but New York will see a foot of snow in the mountains. The big thing to watch out for with this storm is the high winds. They can make the snowfall very dangerous because it’s much harder for drivers and pilots to see in front of them. So, if you live in those areas, make sure you’re prepared to stay home.
