A mother and her daughter in England have been putting smiles on strangers faces with random (随机的) acts of kindness. Every week, Sophie-Louise Corrigan allows her 5-year-old daughter Amina to choose random strangers to put a smile on their faces.
When Corrigan is with her daughter Amina, Corrigan will let the little girl go to whoever she is drawn. Later, Corrigan will ask why Amina opts for them. Her answer is always because she likes something about them, either their tops or their hair. Amina always takes her pick.
It is a tradition that started with Corrigan’s own mother. “Mum and I used to do it. Whenever we had some money left from the weekly shop or if we really wanted to do it that week, we took out something from the shop to make sure we had the money. We would always do it,” said Corrigan.
“Now, we do it everywhere, even when we went on holiday to another city, we did a random act of kindness there. We find flowers and chocolates whether it be in Ormskirk, Liver-pool or Wirral. Wherever we go, we do it,” said Corrigan.
“The reaction is amazing and is one of the reasons why we carry on. A number of people who spoke to us didn’t t even know what to say. They were speechless. There were a lot of people who gave Amina a hug after it. She loves such a hug. There were others who had tears welling up. They said that they had such a terrible week either with bills or a family death. Amina will always say to me that although the person was crying, it was happy tears. She is in the process of understanding how acts of kindness work and how feelings work.”
24. What does Corrigan ask Amina to do every week?
A. Stay with her mother. B. Make friends with others.
C. Buy something from shops. D. Be kind to strangers.
25. What does the underlined phrase “opts for” in paragraph 2 mean?

A. People need happiness. B. Few people live a hard life.
C. Some people like being silent. D. Most people are friendly to others.
27. What can we conclude from the text?
A. Only good people have friends. B. Where there is life, there is hope.
C. Kindness is like a ray of sunshine. D. A kind man can gain more from others.

Before war and time destroy more of our important cultural sites, we need to save them in 3-D digital libraries. Across 163 different countries, more than 1,000 natural and cultural historic places make up our most precious human heritage, which UNESCO calls World Heritage Sites.
We lose a little of that heritage every day. War, climate change and pollution have bad effects, as do wind and rain. The $4 million a year that UNESCO spends on preservation is not nearly enough to take care of even the four dozen sites considered to be at approaching risk of being lost forever. Now there’s a better choice. New digital conservation technologies let us hold on to them, at least virtually, through 3-D scanning, modelling and digital storage. Such projects can be accomplished through cooperation between governments, universities, industries and non-profit organizations.
To make a 3-D model, a laser (激光) scanner bounces light off an object and records the results. To reproduce every corner and opening, the scanner collects overlapping (重登的) images from all possible angles. A computer then sews them together into one large surface image and draws lines from one point to another to create a wireframe model. High-resolution digital cameras add colour and texture. When fully put together, the models can be viewed, printed or operated.
These scans do more than preserving a memory in a database. With highly accurate measurements, archaeologists (考古学家) can find hidden passages or reveal ancient engineering tricks. School kids can explore places they might otherwise never see. And when a site is destroyed, the scans can even be used to reconstruct what was there. That has already happened to one World Heritage Site, the Kasubi Tombs in Uganda. Built of wood in 1882, they were destroyed by fire in 2010 and rebuilt in 2014, based in large part on 3-D models made in 2009. More than 100 World Heritage Sites have already been preserved through 3-D models, and conservationists are racing to record as more as possible.
28. How does the author show the necessity for 3-D digital libraries in the first two paragraphs?
A. By listing the threats to our human heritage.
B. By introducing some damaged historical sites.
C. By quoting some experts’ views on heritage protection.
D. By explaining UNESCO’s research on World Heritage Sites.
29. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The function of a laser scanner.
B. The process of making a 3-D model.
C. The reflection of light off an object.
D. The development of 3-D digital technology.
30. What do we know about the Kasubi Tombs in Uganda?
A. They are metal-framed.
B. They were once destroyed in an earthquake.
C. They were reconstructed thanks to 3-D models.
D.They are still in its original condition.
31. What does the author intend to say through this text?
A. Never ignore the destructive power of war.
B. Take action to reduce pollution in historic places.
C. Invest more money to preserve World Heritage Sites.
D. Take advantage of 3-D technology to keep history.
D
An optical (光存储的) chip has been developed by a multi-institution research group that has the potential to train machine learning hardware.
Training of modern-day artificial intelligence (AI) systems costs several million dollars in electric power and requires supercomputer-like equipment. This increasing Al desire leaves an ever-widening difference between computer hardware and demand for AI. Simply, photonic chips (光子芯片) have become a possible solution to deliver higher computing performance. However, though they’ve shown improved heart operations in machine intelligence used for data sort, photonic chips have yet to be actual front-end (前端) learning and machine training process.
Machine learning is a two-step procedure. First, data is used to train the system and then other data is used to test the performance of the AI system. A team of researchers from several universities set out to do just that. After one training step, the team observed a mistake and reset the hardware for a second training cycle followed by additional training cycles until an enough AI performance was reached. Thus far, photonic chips have only shown an ability to sort and conclude information from data. Now, researchers have made it possible to speed up the training step itself.
This added Al ability is part of a larger effort around photonic tensor cores (张量核心) and other electronic-photonic application-specific combined circuits that use photonic chips producing for machine learning and Al applications.
“This novel hardware will speed up the training of machine learning systems and make the best of what both photonics and electronic chips have to offer. It is a major jump forward for Al hardware speeding-up.” said Volker J.Sorger, founder of a company.
“The training of Al systems costs a great deal of energy and carbon footprint. For example, a single Al transformer takes about five times as much CO2 in electricity as a gasoline car spends in its lifetime.
Our training on photonic chips will help to reduce this spending.”
32. What can we infer about photonic chips from paragraph 2?
A. They can soon be widely used. B. They still have failings.
C. They are beyond spending on AI. D. They can provide more electric power.
33. What do the researchers from several universities suggest?
A. Machine learning has two steps.
B. Mistakes are unavoidable in research.
C. Speeding up the training step is possible.
D. Photonic chips cannot sort information.
34. What is Volker’s attitude to photonic chips?
A. Favourable. B. Careless. C. Doubtful. D. Negative.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Slowing Up Al’s Training
B. Reducing Machine Learning Spending
C. Photonic Chips to Reduce the Cost of Computers
D. Photonic Chips to Train Machine Learning Hardware

The Internet has the power to connect people across the world to a single shared community. Billions of people in different parts of the world have joined it already, and obviously many more will follow. 36
One of the greatest advantages of the Internet lies in the quick and easy access to a huge amount of information. 37 With the click of a mouse or the touch of a button, it is possible to find out almost anything we care to know, from food to travel packages, from news to learning resources. No wonder the Internet has now become the first place that most people turn to for information.
The Internet has also made our lives unbelievably convenient, with all sorts of goods and services provided by electronic commerce (商业), more commonly known as e-commerce. You can have food delivered to you using food delivery apps and sites. 38 There is no need to worry—you can pay for almost everything on your smartphone. Why wait hopelessly for a taxi in the cold rain? It is now simple and fast to order one with a taxi app. When you wish to go on holiday, you can make all your travel arrangements just in front of the computer.
39 With all sorts of communication software, physical distance no longer gets in the way. No matter where we are, we are able to keep in contact with loved ones, find long-lost friends and discover whole new communities who share our hobbies. 40
A. Forgot to carry cash?
B. However, Internet also has its problems.
C. This enables us to use our time more flexibly.
D. To a certain extent, the world’s knowledge is all at our fingertips.
E. Above all else, the Internet helps us establish and maintain social ties.
F. A message, a group chat, a video call—there are endless ways to share our views.
