I. Teaching objectives:

To learn some words and expressions used to describe conflict situations and resolutions.

To learn the strategies about how to read newspaper reports.
To learn to resolve conflicts.

To help students learn how to get on with others.

2. To learn to use sentences to describe conflict situations and resolutions.
III. Teaching procedures
Step 1:Lead-in
Look at some pictures and talk about community and neighbourhood conflicts.
What kind of community do you like?
Are there conflict in your community?
Have you ever experienced a neighbourhood conflict? What do you think might cause conflicts between neighbours?
Step 2:Pre-reading: Prediction
Here is a newspaper report on neighborhood conflict. Look at the title and guess the topic.
Step 3: While-reading
Passage1:
1.Fast-reading:What is the text mainly about? .
2.Read for structure
Read the 1 and 2 par. Answer the questions.
(1)Why did the neighbours complain about Ma Ming?
(2)Why did a neighbour think Ma Ming had a bad influence on his son?
3.Read the 3 and 4 par. Answer the questions.
(1)What did the community council do? Why did they take action?
(2)How did the neighbours feel after Ma Ming’s depature?
4.Read the 5 par. Answer the question.
(1)Where is Ma Ming now? What is his attitude towards the conflict?
(2)What do you understand by the title “Drummer Hits the Road”?
5.Draw a mind map
Draw a mind map of the conflict between Ma Ming and his neighbours (causes, complaints, resolution, attitudes).
6.Prediction. What do you think might have happened according to the title:Grandpa arrested after one shower too many
7.Read the paragraph 1-2 to check your prediction
8.Read the following paragraphs carefully . Fill in the table and answer the question: What other way can you think of to dealt with the conflict between Macky and Smith?
Step4:Post-reading
Writing
According to what you have learned today,associating with the experience of your conflict in daily life,write an e-mail to your friend.
Step5:Homework
1.Polish your writing after class.
2.Interview your classmates what conflicts they have experienced and how they dealt with them then.
