Frances Stevens Reese Wooldland Trail Guide
The Woodland Trail was opened to the public on October 21, 1997. Boscobel’s Board of Directors adopted a formal decision of naming the Woodland Trail in honor of former Boscobel board member, Fances Stevens Reese (1917-2003), one year after his death.
The trail(小径) is approximately 10 miles in length, leading down to Constitution Forest. When the West Point Glass Factory was operating during the Civil War, trees for miles around were cleared to provide firewood. Walking out of the forest, you will find a large mass of native hard rock about three billion years old.
Throughout this country path, you will find picture boards identifying birds and plants local to this region. You will also find signs with historic and environmental information written by area specialists.
When you take a walk through this “undiscovered” forest land, please be a considerate guest.
Before walking the trail, please purchase a pass in the Carriage House. Plan ahead, so you will be back by closing time.
Follow the trail markers and remain on the trail. Besides protecting the fragile forest ecosystem, you will reduce the risk of poison plants and snakes.
Leave rocks, plants, animals and art works where you see them so that the person behind you can have the same experience.
Carry out whatever you carry in because there are no rubbish containers on the trail. If you happen to see a piece of litter, be a good guest and pick it up.
1.When was the trail named to honor Frances Stevens Reese?
    A.In 1997. B.In 1917
    C.In 2003 D.In 2004
2.What can you see along the trail?
A.An old battle field. B.A glass factory.
    C.Information signs. D.Rock houses.
3.What should you do as a thoughtful visitor?
    A.Leave the wildlife undisturbed.
B.Throw the rubbish into the dustbins.
C.Make reservations in the Carriage House.
D.Protect the markers of the Woodland Trail.

I used to live in Southern Africa and recently went back to Botswana to visit the Central Kalahari Game Reserve with my friend Oscar. Why? Because there's nothing quite like the vast African wilderness...
Our jeep moved slowly along the too-hot-to-touch sand. With no air conditioner and an engine which might break down at any time, it was tough work. The dry heat was fierce and the only break came from using our precious water for brief bucket showers.
With no supplies available within the park—it was a sort of no man's land which was inhabited by the occasional cow — it is necessary to bring all your fuel, food and water with you.
We camped in a small place in the center of the woods. At the height of the dry season, leaves in the trees had all fallen down, shade was in scant supply, so we placed ourselves near a leaf less tree. As the sun set, we drove towards the watering hole a few miles away, and were reminded just why we'd chosen to spend weeks suffering this exercise on ourselves. A lone lion paused his lapping to acknowledge our arrival. He yawned, and then carried on drinking.
That night, sleeping on the roof of the jeep, we felt his shouting as much as heard it . Those vast African skies offered the only indication that the outside world hadn't come to a state of quietness, as bright satellite whipped across the blackness.
In the morning we saw that the lion had walked in the road overnight, his paw prints pressed into yesterday's tyre tracks.
We set off for another morning inching through the sand; another day of changing landscapes and raw, wild beauty; another night lit by shooting stars.
4.What can we learn about the author?
A.He slept in a hotel at night. B.He is now living in Botswana.
C.He enjoys the wildness of nature. D.He didn't take enough food and water.
5.What did they think of their journey?
A.Amazing and hard. B.Terrible and annoying.
C.Comfortable and safe. D.Pleasant and easy.
6.What does the underlined word “scant” in paragraph 4 mean?
    A.Inadequate. B.unbending.
    C.Abundant. D.Ready.
7.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Shining Stars and A Lone Lion B.Travelling in the Southern Africa
C.My Great Escape into the Wild D.Camping in Too-Hot-to-Touch Sand

There’re currently 21.5 million students in America, and many will be funding their college on borrowed money. Given that there’s now over $1.3 trillion in student loans on the books, it’s pretty clear that many students are far from sensible. The average student’s debt upon graduation now approaches $40,000, and as college becomes ever more expensive, calls to make it “free” are multiplying. Even Hillary Clinton says that when it comes to college, “Costs won’t be a barrier.”
But the only way college could be free is if the faculty and staff donated their time, the buildings required no maintenance, and campuses required no utilities. As long as it’s impossible to produce something from nothing, costs are absolutely a barrier.
The actual question we debate is who should pay for people to go to college. If taxpayers are to bear the cost of forgiving student loans, shouldn’t they have a say in how their money is used?
At least taxpayers should be able to decide what students will study on the public dime. If we’re going to force taxpayers to foot the bill for college degrees, students should only study those subjects that’re of greatest benefit to taxpayers. After all, students making their own choices in this respect is what caused the problem in the first place. We simply don’t need more poetry, gender studies, or sociology majors. How do we know which subjects benefit society? Easy.
Average starting salaries give a clear indication of what type of training society needs its new workers to have. Certainly, there’re benefits to a college major beyond the job a student can perform. But if we’re talking about the benefits to society, the only thing that matters is what the major enables the student to produce for society. And the value of what the student can produce is reflected in the wage employers are willing to pay the student to produce it.
A low wage for elementary school teachers, however, doesn’t mean elementary education isn’t important. It simply means there’re too many elementary school teachers already.
Meanwhile, there’re few who’re willing and able to perform jobs requiring a petroleum engineering major, so the value of one more of those people is very high.
So we can have taxpayers pick up students’ tuition in exchange for dictating what those students will study. Or we can allow students both to choose their majors and pay for their education themselves. But in the end, one of two things is true:
Either a college major is worth its cost or it isn’t. If yes, taxpayer financing isn’t needed. If not, taxpayer financing isn’t desirable. Either way, taxpayers have no business paying for students’ college education.
8.In the author’s opinion, free college education is ________.
A.impractical B.unsustainable C.a goal to strive for D.a way to social equality
9.What should students do if taxpayers are to bear their college costs?
A.Work even harder to repay society.
    B.Choose their subjects more carefully.
C.Choose majors that will serve society’s practical needs.
D.Allow taxpayers to participate in college administration.
10.What does the author say about the value of a student’s college education?
A.It is underestimated by profit-seeking employers.
B.It is to be proved by what they can do on the job.
C.It is well reflected in their average starting salary.
D.It is embodied in how they remove social barriers.
11.What message does the author want to convey in the passage?
A.Students should think carefully whether to go to college.
B.Taxpayers should only finance the most gifted students.
C.The worth of a college education is open to debate.
D.College students should fund their own education.

With self-driving vehicle technology rapidly advancing, many companies are turning to autonomous robots for the final leg of the delivery process, from the store or local distribution center to the customer. The latest to join the trend is e-commerce giant Amazon. Following a successful eight — month test run in Snohomish County, Washington, the company's Scout robots have been making the rounds of Irvine, California, since August 6, 2019.
The six-wheeled Scout is about the size of a large cooler with the capacity to carry small or medium-sized
packages. The battery-powered vehicle, which moves at a regular walking pace, has been programmed to avoid pedestrians, animals, and unexpected obstacles, such as garbage cans. Its powerful sensors can also detect the movement of a car backing out of a driveway.
To accelerate Scout's development and bring it nationwide sooner, the company has created several detailed virtual maps of American suburbs and conducted trial deliveries to homes there.
Though Amazon has not shown how Scout ensures the delivery is picked up by the right person, it most likely requires the customer to apply a unique code, texted to them prior to the delivery, to unlock the store box. Also unclear is the number of deliveries Scout can complete before its battery needs to be recharged. Though the initial tests are being conducted with a human for company, the robot will be autonomous in the future. Its location, however, will be tracked at all times ——if someone attempts to steal Scout, Amazon employees will be instantly sensed.
However, the eco-friendly robots are unable to climb stairs or open gates, which means that they can only reach consumers who live on the ground level. Additionally, the robots are unable to leave packages at the front door if the customers are not home. Whether these problems get resolved remains to be seen. For now, it appears that humans will still be needed to achieve the ever-growing demand for home and office deliveries.
12.What are many companies developing autonomous robots for?
    A.Final tests. B.The so-called last mile.
    C.Robots' safety. D.Delivery speed.
13.What can we infer about Scout from paragraph 2?
A.It looks like a cooler. B.It adjusts its speed accordingly.
C.Its sensors play a key role. D.It will be widely used soon.
14.What does the underlined phrase “prior to" in paragraph 4 mean?
    A.Before. B.After.
    C.In front of. D.Due to.
15.From which is the text probably taken?
A.A biology textbook. B.A health magazine.
    C.A newspaper. D.A travel brochure.

There was no sign that the earthquake was coming.
A 7.8 magnitude (震级) quake almost flattened the city, killing over thousands of lives in less than a few minutes.
In the midst of destruction and chaos, a father left his wife securely at home and rushed to the school where his son Daniel was supposed to be, only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake.
After the upsetting shock, he remembered the promise he had made to Daniel: “No matter what, I’ll always be there for you!” And tears began to fill his eyes. He looked at the pile of ruins that once was the school. Everything looked hopeless, but he kept remembering his commitment to his son.
He began to concentrate on where he walked his son to class at school each morning. Remembering his son’s classroom would be in the back right corner of the building, he rushed there and started digging through the stones and bricks.
As he was digging, other anxious parents arrived, heartbroken, shouting desperately: “Mary!” “Sam!”
Some other well-meaning parents tried to pull him off what was left of the school, saying: “It’s too late!” “They’re dead!” “You can’t help!” “Go home!” “Come on! There’s nothing you can do here!” “You’re just going to make things worse!”
To each parent he responded with one line: “Are you going to help me now?”
And then he continued to dig for his son, stone by stone.
Some firefighters showed up and tried to pull him off the school’s ruins, saying, “Fires are breaking out, and explosions are happening everywhere. You’re in danger. We’ll take care of it. Just go home!” To which this loving, determined father asked, “Are you going to help me now?”
The fire chief replied, “You’re angry and worried. I get it. But you are not helping by staying here. Just go home. We will help you find your son!” To which he replied, “But I promised my son I’ll always be there for him.”

    1.D 2.C 3.A

Boscobel’s Board of Directors adopted a formal decision of naming the Woodland Trail in honor of former Boscobel board member, Fances Stevens Reese (1917-2003), one year after his death.(博斯科贝尔的董事会通过了一项正式决定,在博斯科贝尔前董事会成员芬斯·史蒂文斯·里斯去世一年后,以芬斯·史蒂文斯·里斯(1917-2003)的名字命名这条林地小径。)
Throughout this country path, you will find picture boards identifying birds and plants local to this region. You will also find signs with historic and environmental information written by area specialists.(在这条乡间小路上,你会发现一些图板,上面画着当地的鸟类和植物。
When you take a walk through this “undiscovered” forest land, please be a considerate guest.(当你漫步在这片“未被发现”的林地时,请做一位体贴入微的客人。) 故选A。
When you take a walk through this “undiscovered” forest land, please be a considerate guest.(当你漫步在这片“未被发现”的林地时,请做一位体贴入微的客人。) 故选A。
    4.C 5.A 6.A 7.C

根据“I used to live in Southern Africa”,“it is necessary to bring all your fuel, food and water with you”,“That night, sleeping on the roof of the jeep”可知A,B,D不正确,因为作者既没有晚上住在宾馆里,也带了足够的食物和水,文中也没提到作者的居住地。而文章第一段“Because there's nothing quite like the vast African wilderness...”,可知作者热爱领略广阔的大自然之美。故选C。
从“We camped in a small place in the center of the woods.”;“That night, sleeping on the roof of the jeep, we felt his shouting as much as heard it .”可知,作者他们选择的是风餐露宿,并不舒适,从“We set off for another morning inching through the sand; another day of changing landscapes and raw, wild beauty; another night lit by shooting stars.”
画线词汇是“scant”,是来描写“shade”的,上文“At the height of the dry season, leaves in the trees had all fallen down,” 在炎热的干旱季节,树叶都已经凋落。下文“ so we placed ourselves near a leafless tree.”,所以我们住在了没有足够遮阴的地方。 故选A项。
    8.A 9.C 10.C 11.D

根据第二段中“But the only way college could be free is if the faculty and staff donated their time, the buildings required no maintenance, and campuses required no utilities. As long as it’s impossible to produce something from nothing, costs are absolutely a barrier.(但唯一能让大学免费的方法是,教职员工贡献他们的时间,建筑不需要维护,校园不需要水电设施。只要不可能从无到有,成本绝对是一个障碍)”可推知,在作者看来,免费的大学教育是不切实际的。故选A项。
由第三段中的“If taxpayers are to bear the cost of forgiving student loans,  shouldn’t they have a say in how their money is used?(如果纳税人要承担免除学生贷款的成本,他们难道不应该对他们的钱是如何使用的有发言权吗?)”和第四段中的“At least taxpayers should be able to decide what students will study on the public dime. If we're going to force taxpayers to foot the bill for college degrees, students should only study those subjects that are of greatest benefit to taxpayers.(至少纳税人应该能够决定学生花公众的金钱上学所学习的内容。如果我们要强迫纳税人为大学学位买单,学生们应该只学习那些对纳税人最有利的科目)”根据第五段“But if we’re talking about the benefits to society, the only thing that matters is what the major enables the student to produce for society.(但如果我们说的是对社会的好处,唯一重要的是这个专业能让学生为社会做出什么贡献)”。
根据第五段中“Average starting salaries give a clear indication of what type of training society needs its new workers to have. Certainly, there’re benefits to a college major beyond the job a student can perform. But if we’re talking about the benefits to society, the only thing that matters is what the major enables the student to produce for society. And the value of what the student can produce is reflected in the wage employers are willing to pay the student to produce it.(平均起薪清楚地表明,社会需要新员工接受什么样的培训。当然,大学专业的好处不仅仅是学生能胜任的工作。但如果我们谈论的是对社会的好处,唯一重要的是这个专业能让学生为社会创造什么。学生所能创造的价值反映在雇主愿意支付给学生的工资上)”可知,关于学生的大学教育的价值,作者说这很好地反映在他们的平均起薪上。故选C项。
11.主旨大意题。根据文章最后一段“Either a college major is worth its cost or it isn’t. If yes, taxpayer financing isn’t needed. If not, taxpayer financing isn’t desirable. Either way, taxpayers have no business paying for students’ college education.(大学专业要么物有所值,要么不值。如果是的话,就不需要纳税人的资金了。否则,纳税人的资金就不可取了。不管怎样,纳税人都没有理由为学生的大学教育买单)”可知,作者不赞同让纳税人为学生的大学教育买单,应该由学生自己支付学费。故选D项。
    12.B 13.C 14.A 15.C

根据第一段中的第一句“With self-driving vehicle technology rapidly advancing, many companies are turning to autonomous robots for the final leg”可知,随着自动驾驶汽车技术的迅速发展,从商店或当地配送中心到客户,许多公司都把送货行程的最后一段交给了自动机器人。
根据第二段中“The battery-powered vehicle…has been programmed to avoid pedestrians, animals, and unexpected obstacles, such as garbage cans. Its powerful sensors can also detect the movement of a car backing out of a driveway” 这款电池驱动的汽车已经被设计成避开行人、动物和意外的障碍物,比如垃圾桶。
根据第四段中“Though Amazon has not shown how Scout ensures the delivery is picked up by the right person, it most likely requires the customer to apply a unique code, texted to them prior to the delivery, to unlock the store box.” 故选A。
    16.F 17.E 18.A 19.B 20.D

    47.    Courageously, he went alone because he needed to know for himself: “Is my boy alive or is he dead?” He dug for hours and hours. His hands were mushy and he could only see well in flashes. Right before he was about to pass out, he pulled back a large rounded rock and heard his son’s voice. He screamed his son’s name, “DANIEL!” A response came from below, “Dad? It’s me, Dad!” This must be the most beautiful voice he’s ever heard in his whole life! “What’s going on in there? How is it?” the father asked anxiously.
“I’m fine. There are 13 other kids down here, Dad,” Daniel replied. “We’re scared, hungry, and thirsty. When the building collapsed, it made a triangle and saved us.” The father realized that this was a tricky situation. He couldn’t risk causing another collapse down there. Fortunately, the firefighters were just nearby. The father shouted to the fire chief and signalled to them to come over. Then, the father helped the firefighters cautiously remove the rocks and pulled out the kids one by one. When everyone was safe and sound, Daniel threw himself into his father’s arms: “You did it, Dad! No matter what, I know you’ll be there for me!”
