    My favourite Books
    — Posted by Catherine Chung, a great writer
Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang
This collection contains several maths stories. The one I recommend is Division By Zero, about Jane Parkinson, a brilliant German mathematician. To her great despair, she ends up proving that mathematics is inconsistent and is able to prove that any two numbers are equal. A beautiful, thought-provoking story about belief, understanding, and faith.
The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yoko Ogawa
It’s about a woman who comes to work for a once-great mathematician. Due to a brain injury, he has only 80 minutes of short-term memory available to him before he forgets everything. It is filled with beautiful maths, simply and clearly described alongside finely drawn relationships between the characters.
Too Much Happiness by Alice Munro
Kovalevskaya was a 19th-century mathematician at a time when women were not allowed in most of Europe to attend university. She married a man who promised to take her to Germany to study. She made major contributions to the field and became the first woman in Russia to obtain a doctorate in mathematics.
The Ore Miner’s Wife by Karl Iagnemma
It is about a miner who thinks he’s discovered the proof to the problem: construct a square, equal in area to a given circle. His wife, not knowing what has suddenly taken his attention and his time, fears he is being unfaithful. In fact, what he does is a moving exploration of the joys of entering a problem.
    1. Which book is about a pioneering Russian woman mathematician?
    A. Stories of Your Life and Others. B. The Housekeeper and the Professor.
    C. Too Much Happiness. D. The Ore Miner’s Wife.
    2. What do the listed books have in common?
    A. They tell stories of woman mathematicians. B. They involve mathematics.
    C. They explore human relationship. D. They reveal people’s inner world.
    3. What can we learn from this text?
    A. Jane Parkinson fails to show math was inconsistent.
    B. The mathematician in Yoko Ogawa’s book has problem memorizing things.
    C. In the 19th century, women in Europe didn’t have chance to get higher education.
    D. The miner in Karl Iagnemma’s book is unfaithful to his wife.

It has been nearly a decade in making shoes, but Nike finally released a sneaker that can be put on completely hands-free. This is a game changer for countless people with disabilities, and it all started with a letter the company received back in 2012.
At the time, Matthew Walzer was 16 and frustrated by the lack of accessible tennis shoe options, as his cerebral palsy (脑瘫) limited his mobility. Matthew attempted to write a letter to Nike for help. In his letter he wrote, “I am able to completely dress myself, but my parents still have to tie my shoes. I find this extremely frustrating and, at times, embarrassing.”
Moved by the boy, Nike got to work and three years later launched the original Fly Ease, a sneaker with no laces. They sent a pair to Matthew, and he was absolutely thrilled. “When I put the shoes on every morning, they give the greatest sense of independence and accomplishment I have ever felt in my life.” he told them.
Ever since then, the company released a few progressive designs over the years, but the 2021 Nike Go Fly Ease is by far the best one yet! The newest release has gone a step further as the tennis shoes are not only lace-free but also hands-free. The heel hinges (装铰链), so a person’s foot can slip right in. Then, as they step down, the mechanism locks the shoe back in place.
While Matthew was the inspiration behind this entire line of sneakers, Nike hopes these shoes will be worn by people with disabilities, women in their third trimester of pregnancy, dog walkers, parents with their hands full, and basically anyone who would benefit from the slip-on shoes.
These shoes will make life better for so many people, and none of it would have happened if Matthew didn’t speak up and ask for more. He is real evidence that one enthusiastic person can transform the world for the better!
    4. Why did Matthew Walzer write to Nike?
    A. He complained about the quality of Nike.
    B. He wanted Nike to help him be independent.
    C. He needed a new sneaker to join tennis team.
    D. He tried to design a lace-free Fly Ease for Nike.
    5. When did Nike send a pair of Fly Ease with no laces to Matthew?
    A. In2012. B. In 2015. C. In 2018. D. In 2021.
    6. What does the underlined part “slip-on shoes” refer to in Paragraph 4?
A Sneakers easy to put on or take off.
    B. The original sneakers with no laces.
    C. Sneakers popular with all customers.
    D. Tennis shoes designed for sportsmen.
    7. What does the author encourage us to do in the last paragraph?
    A. Use all approaches to success.
    B. Be kind to anyone in the world.
    C. Live one’s dream independently.
    D. Face any challenge with courage.
B 5. B 6. A 7. D

根据第二段“In his letter he wrote, “I am able to completely dress myself, but my parents still have to tie my shoes. I find this extremely frustrating and, at times, embarrassing.(他在信中写道:“我可以自己穿衣服,但我的父母仍然要帮我系鞋带。我发现这非常令人沮丧,有时还很尴尬。)”可知,信中Matthew写道自己能穿衣服,但父母得给他系鞋带,自己感觉这件事令人沮丧尴尬。由此推断:他写信给耐克公司是想请求帮助自己独立。故选B。
    【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第一段“it all started with a letter the company received back in 2012.及Moved by the boy, Nike got to work and three years later launched the original Fly Ease, a sneaker with no laces. They sent a pair to Matthew...(这一切都始于该公司2012年收到的一封信。及被男孩感动,耐克必须工作,三年后推出原飞,没有鞋带的运动鞋。他们给马修送了一对……)”可知,Matthew2012年给Nike写的信,3年后收到的鞋,即2015年。故选B。
    【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第四段“The heel hinges (装铰链), so a person’s foot can slip right in. Then, as they step down, the mechanism locks the shoe back in place.(鞋跟是合页的,所以人的脚可以滑进去。然后,当他们走下来时,机械装置将鞋锁回原位。)”可推断,Nike Go Fly Ease鞋可以直接把脚伸进去,好穿好脱。slip-on shoes意为“容易穿上或脱掉的运动鞋”。故选A。
根据文章最后一段“none of it would have happened if Matthew didn’t speak up and ask for more.(如果马修不站出来要求更多,这一切都不会发生。)”和“He is real evidence that one enthusiastic person can transform the world for the better!(他是一个真正的证据,一个充满热情的人可以把世界变得更好!)”

They say procrastination is the thief of time — actually deadlines are. New research has found that if you want someone to help you out with something, it is best not to set a deadline at all. But if you do set a deadline, make it short.
Professor Stephen Knowles tested the effect of deadline length on task completion for their research. Participants were invited to complete an online survey concerning a charity donation. They were given either one week, one month, or no deadline to respond. Professor Knowles says although the topic of the survey is about charity, the results are true of any situation where someone asks another person for help.
The study found responses to the survey were lowest for the one-month deadline and highest when no deadline was specified. No deadline and the one- week deadline led to many early responses, while a long deadline appeared to give people permission to procrastinate, and then forget. Professor Knowles wasn’t surprised to find that specifying a shorter deadline increased the chances of receiving a response compared to a longer deadline. However, he did find it interesting that they received the most responses when no deadline was specified.
“We interpret this as evidence that specifying a longer deadline, as opposed to a short deadline or no deadline at all, removes the urgency to act,” he says. “People therefore put off undertaking the task, and since they are inattentive or forget, postponing it results in lower response rates.”
He says of the research that it is possible that not specifying a deadline might still have led participants to assume that there is an unspoken deadline. Professor Knowles hopes his research can help reduce the amount of procrastinating people do. “Many people procrastinate. They have the best intentions of helping someone out, but just do not get around to doing it. ”
    8. Why did Professor Knowles do the research?
    A. To study the role a deadline plays in procrastination.
    B. To find out whether people are interested in charity.
    C. To attract public attention to the effects of procrastination.
    D. To test the effect of procrastination on task completion.
    9. What most likely leads to procrastination?
    A. No deadlines. B. Short deadlines. C. Specific deadlines. D. Long deadlines.
    10. What’s the attitude of Professor Knowles to the findings of the study?
    A. Interested. B. Conservative. C. Confused. D. Unsurprised.
    11. Which of the following is the closest in meaning to the underlined word “inattentive”?
    A. careless B. unimportant C. lazy D. difficult
A 9. D 10. D 11. A
根据第二段“Professor Stephen Knowles tested the effect of deadline length on task completion for their research. (Stephen Knowles教授在他们的研究中测试了截止日期长度对任务完成的影响)”可推知,Stephen Knowles教授做这项研究是为了研究设定截止日期对拖延这一行为的影响。故选A。
根据第三段中“No deadline and the one- week deadline led to many early responses, while a long deadline appeared to give people permission to procrastinate, and then forget. (没有截止日期和一周的截止日期导致了许多早期的回复,而较长的截止日期似乎允许人们拖延,然后忘记)”可知,设定很长的截止日期最有可能导致拖延。故选D。
    【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Professor Knowles wasn’t surprised to find that specifying a shorter deadline increased the chances of receiving a response compared to a longer deadline.( Knowles教授毫不惊讶地发现,与较长的截止日期相比,指定较短的截止日期会增加收到回复的机会)”可推知,Knowles教授对这项研究结果的态度是不惊讶的。
根据画线词上文“People therefore put off undertaking the task, and since they are (因此,人们推迟了任务,因为他们)”以及后文“or forget, postponing it results in lower response rates (或者忘记,推迟任务会导致较低的回复率)”可知,此处指由于人们疏忽或忘记,人们会推迟完成任务,推迟任务会导致较低的回复率。 故选A。
Food is part of who we are. We all need it, survive because of it and derive happiness from it. So if food matters so much, why do we let so much of it go rotten in our fridges, or get thrown out in our stores? Sadly, we love food, but we don’t take care of it. ____12____ Here are ways to help us love our food better and grow respect for the world behind what we eat.
    • Reduce your food waste.
Buy only the food you need, store food wisely, donate excess and turn leftover food into the next day’s meals. When we waste food, all the resources used for growing, processing, transporting and marketing that food are wasted too. ____13____
    • Support your local food producers.
Chefs get awards, stars and recognition for their creations. But what about our farmers? ____14____ Shop at your local markets and get to know your farmers. Giving them your business is giving them your recognition and respect.
    • Adopt a healthier, more sustainable diet.
____15____ We get energy and maintain health from good food. We normally don’t care the power that food and nutrition have over our bodies. Too much of it, or too much of only one kind of it, can lead to obesity, deficiencies or diet-related diseases.
    • ____16____
By treating each meal with pride, we respect the farmers who produced it, and the resources that went into it. Respect can be passed on. Talk to the people around and to the next generation about making informed, healthy and sustainable food choices.
Respecting food means appreciating the back-story of food. When we know the full picture, it is easier to see what our food really stands for and how precious it really is.
    A. Have a conversation.
    B. Learn where food comes from.
    C. Our bodies consume calories and nutrients.
    D. For many people on the planet, food is giving.
    E. Food is so much more than what is on our plates.
    F. One third of all food produced globally is lost or wasted.
    G. Without them, we wouldn’t have the fresh food we need on a daily basis.
F 13. E 14. G 15. C 16. A
根据前文“Sadly, we love food, but we don’t take care of it.(可悲的是,我们喜欢食物,但我们没有照顾它。)” F“One third of all food produced globally is lost or wasted.(全球生产的粮食有三分之一被损失或浪费。)”
根据前文“When we waste food, all the resources used for growing, processing, transporting and marketing that food are wasted too.(当我们浪费食物时,所有用于种植、加工、运输和销售这些食物的资源也被浪费了。)” E“Food is so much more than what is on our plates.(食物远不止是我们盘子里的东西。)”用“so much more than what is on our plates(比我们盘子里的要多得多)”概括了前文提及的“all the resources used for growing, processing, transporting and marketing(所有用于种植、加工、运输和销售的资源)”,前后衔接紧密,符合分析。
G“Without them, we wouldn’t have the fresh food we need on a daily basis.(没有他们,我们就不会有我们每天需要的新鲜食物。)”
根据该部分主题“Adopt a healthier, more sustainable diet.(采用更健康、更可持续的饮食。)” C“Our bodies consume calories and nutrients.(我们的身体消耗热量和营养。)”
根据后文“Talk to the people around and to the next generation about making informed, healthy and sustainable food choices.(和周围的人以及下一代谈谈如何做出明智、健康和可持续的食物选择。)” 选项A“Have a conversation.(进行交谈。)”与后文“Talk to…” 故选A项。

A Christmas Tree for Mrs Mueller
Mrs Mueller was our next-door neighbor when my sister Laurel and I were growing up. She moved here after her husband died. She had no children and no relatives that we knew of. She was gentle and kind, and Laurel and I considered her our special friend.
One December, Mrs Mueller was ill in hospital. Laurel and I were busy making Christmas presents, and we pondered what to make for Mrs Mueller. We couldn’t bear seeing her come home before Christmas to an empty house with no holiday decorations. Then we lit upon the idea of decorating a small tree that would greet her with lights and cheer. We were wondering how to carry out our plan when the answer appeared.
I was in Miss O’Keefe’s sixth grade class that year, and we decorated a small tree with paper-link chains and ornaments we’d made in art class. It was beautiful. Best of all, it had to be removed from the classroom before Christmas vacation.
Miss O’Keefe said there would be a drawing for the tree. We’d each write our name on a piece of paper and put it in the box she had prepared. On the last day of school before vacation, she’d draw a name from the box, and that student could take the tree home.
Great! That was exactly what I was longing for! So I wrote my name “Helen Wheeler” neatly on a piece of paper and folded it carefully. As I put it into the box, I whispered to Miss O’Keefe that I really hoped I’d win the tree because my sister and I wanted to give it to our neighbor. Though there were 30 children in the class and each might win the tree, I was somehow certain that I would get it because our cause was good: We wanted to make Mrs Mueller happy.
The day before vacation finally arrived. Laurel and I usually walked to and from school, but that day I persuaded Mom to pick us up in her car after school in case I really got the tree.
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;

Then she unfolded the paper. looked at it and announced. “Helen has won the tree!” I was beside myself with excitement! And I’ll never forget the astonishment on my mother’s face as my sister and I carried the tree to her car. Since Mom had a key to Mrs Mueller’s house, we took the tree straight to her living room and set it up on a table. It looked so beautiful!
The next evening we welcomed Mrs Mueller back at her door. She slowly made her way into the house and turned on the lights. Greeted by the sparkling Christmas tree. Mrs Mueller was rooted to the spot, looking surprised. Then a sweet smile appeared on her face and tears welled up in her eyes. “Thank you so much. she said softly. While Laurel and I were excitedly recounting the story. it suddenly dawned on me that Miss O’ Keefe had helped me in a secret way: Though she had announced my name, she never showed anyone what was written on that piece of paper!
