It was a beautiful sunny day when a moving van (小型货车) pulled onto the tree-lined street. Mark and Mindy stepped out of the van and looked at their new home with pride. They had been saving for a long time to buy their first house together and were very excited to go on a new visit.
Within an hour they had removed a number of boxes and were pleased with their progress. The sky had begun to darken slightly, but the weather was still pleasant.
Then Mindy heard it-even felt it. There was a crack of thunder and then a bolt of lightning. Mindy and Mark immediately froze and looked at each other, then looked at the boxes lying on their lawn. They hurriedly got their belongings indoors, but not before getting caught in the rain.
Mark and Mindy stood in their living room, wet from head to toe, surrounded by what were now very wet oxes. Then, Mark noticed a pool of water in the hallway.
Then he found that there was water dripping from the ceiling. “We can have someone fix it,” Mindy said. “I’ll grab a bucket to catch the water for now.”
A moment later, Mark heard a scream and raced into the kitchen just in time to see a mouse running across the floor. Mindy was frozen with fright.
“Don’t worry! We can take care of that!” Mark id, trying to sound s possible. “Let’s go and open om of the boxes. That will make u feel better.”
Mark and Mindy made their way to the living room but when they opened a box holding their kitchen things they found that all of their plates, bows and cups were broken. They looked at each other in low spirits.
“What can we do now?” Mindy asked.
It seemed that their first day in their new home was not turning out to be the happy occasion they had expected. Just then, they both heard a noise.

It was a Sunday morning. Betty woke up earlier than usual. She couldn’t sleep any longer because she was so excited that her uncle Mark was taking her to the beach. She had always loved going surfing with her uncle. She put her swimming suit on and took her bag quickly that she had prepared the night before and went outside to wait. She jumped up and down with joy when she saw her uncle’s red jeep turn the corner down her street.
Uncle Mark got out of the car and helped Betty get in. “Are you ready?” he asked. “Yes!” replied Betty. Uncle Mark could see the excitement in her face. Suddenly he said seriously, “well, before we go, I have to let you know that a shark appeared recently where we’re going to surf today.” Scared and shocked, Betty couldn’t say a word. “Haha! I’m kidding you, “Uncle Mark burst out laughing. Betty laughed too. She knew Uncle Mark liked teasing others. “Let’s go and have some breakfast, I know just the place,” Uncle Mark said. They went to a breakfast shop and ate some tacos (炸玉米饼).
After breakfast the two of them went down to Pacific Beach and got their surfboards ready. “First you have to wax (打蜡) the bottom,” explained Uncle Mark. “I know. I’ve watched you do it before!” Betty said as she took the wax from Uncle Mark’s hand. It took about 15 minutes to wax the bottom of their boards. When Betty finished, Uncle Mark looked it over to make sure it was done well. “Nice job, Betty, you wax your board like a true surfer.”
Finally, they were ready to get into the water. They carried their boards down to the beach and went out into the water. Betty was overly excited and tried to rush to catch a wave. Predictably, she crashed and had to start over. Next was her uncle’s turn. He stood up on his first try and smoothly surfed the wave before jumping into the water. Betty cheered for her uncle’s perfect run.

After sixteen years of waiting, Brian finally got his driver’s license. Just about two months after receiving his license, Brian asked if he could take the family car and spend a day at the state fair with a friend. His parents agreed happily and wished him a pleasant trip. So with that, Brian pulled out of the driveway and waved goodbye to his parents.
Colin didn’t live far—maybe ten or fifteen minutes away. And it wasn’t long before both boys were on their way downtown to the fair. Their drive was on a winding two-lane road with a few small hills. They followed the road to the left, slowly curved back to the right, and then proceeded up toward the crest of a hill. All of a sudden, there was a crash. It all happened so fast.
“Are you OK?” Brian asked his buddy.
“I think so. What just happened?” Colin responded.
    “We just had an accident.”
Slowly the boys began to regain their senses. Brian unbuckled(解开) his seat belt and stepped outside to assess the damage. It looked as if the entire left side of the car were one big dent(凹陷). The windows on the driver’s side were in a thousand pieces, and the doors were crunched. Soon the police arrived and surveyed the scene. The police dealt with the accident quickly, then they let all people leave and go back on their way.
The fair was unthinkable under the circumstances. Brain thought it’s best to get Colin home safe before making the journey to his own house. When they reached Colin’s house, Colin climbed out of the car and wished his shaken friend luck.
“Be honest to your parents and don’t worry. It wasn’t your fault.” Colin said, trying to be upbeat.
“I know... I think. But it’s not going to be easy to break this to them. It’s their car.”Brian pointed the car in the direction of his house and drove.

The bell rang, announcing the end of the vivid art class Karson loved most. He was delighted that he had created a very satisfying work. So he walked to the back of the classroom to put his work away carefully. There, lying on the carpet in front of the classroom bookcase, was a golden ticket! Karson picked it up. His heat beat faster when he saw that the name line was blank. He couldn’t believe his luck!
The boys and girls in Karson’s class could earn golden tickets by doing well in their study or by being extra helpful or kind. Once a week their teacher drew a ticket out of a box on her desk and let the winner choose a prize.
Today was the golden ticket drawing, and here was another ticket, just for him! Karson looked around. No one else was near the ticket. All his classmates were at their desks, laughing and talking with each other. Miss Evans was engaged in grading the papers collected early in the morning.
Karson decided to write his name on the blank line. Then he could put it into the prize box with the six tickets he’d already earned. With so many chances, one of his tickets would most probably be picked! Then he could choose the pink toy pig for his sister’s birthday, just like he had been hoping.
He smiled and reached for the pencil in his pocket. Suddenly his fingers stopped. There was a strange feeling in his chest, and it wasn’t his heartbeat. “It’s ‘finders keepers’, right?” he wondered. He looked out of the window and tried to figure it out. On the one hand, he did find the ticket, but he hadn’t earned it. Somebody must have lost it. But on the other hand, he did need tis extra ticket for his great plan!

Isn’t it incredible when a last-minute decision changes someone’s life in a major way?
On the day after Thanksgiving, Allison Scott and her friend, Alfred Valdivia, Jr., made the decision to head up to Big Bear Lake in California for a last-minute camping trip. They packed up their luggage, took the necessary equipment, and brought along their dog for the planned overnight, never once imagining that they were actually setting out on a rescue mission for a man they’d never met.
Allison and Alfred picked a camping spot between Big Bear Lake and Angelus Oaks. Alfred was putting up the tent while Allison was enjoying the beautiful scenery around. After that, they were relaxed, all of a sudden, when they heard a man’s voice. They listened care-fully and confirmed that it was someone who was calling out for help somewhere nearby. Judging from the man’s voice, they decided that he must be in desperate need of help. So they must quickly find this person. The two people and his dog followed the desperate cries for help for about some time. Finally, at the bottom of the hill, they found that a man named Eric was trapped. He had clearly been through an ordeal (磨难). He looked very exhausted.
“We end up finding him, and my friend is looking over the ridge (山脊) and calling out,” Allison recalled. “He had a stick with a water bottle on it trying to signal. He couldn’t walk. His feet were extremely swollen and infected due to walking for so long, and possibly because the place where he stayed was too cold.”
Allison and Alfred climbed down to Eric and learned that he had set out from his home in Oceanside two weeks earlier. No one knew where he was and they didn’t know where to find him either. He had a cell phone, but it was out of power. He’d managed to survive for the past 14 days eating only half a jar of salsa (辣番茄酱) he’d brought along for the hike. He was extremely weak and hungry.

One summer, I went on a four-day desert trip with my family. On the train, I looked out of the window, expecting something surprising to happen on this desert trip. I was very excited all the way, talking about what would happen in the desert with my parents, standing up and looking around.
After what seemed passed quickly, we arrived at the destination, which was the endless desert as far as the eye could see. Everywhere was dull yellow, and there were no trees, and the vastness of the desert shocked each of us.
Before we started our journey, the guide explained the rules to us: We’d better put on sun-protective clothing and hold onto the hiking pole. We had to walk 18 kilometers per day for four days. There were two routes that we could choose from. One was down the hill. There were rivers and vegetation (植被). The road was relatively flat, easy to walk, and it was not so hot. The other route was through the real desert, which was all sand and no water and dust storms often happened. Even before starting the hike, we could feel it blowing into our eyes. We had to go step by step, and our feet could often get stuck in the sand. We needed to arrive at the next destination before 6 pm. There would be a rest area every five kilo-meters, where we could drink water and eat some food. If we really couldn’t persist (坚持), we could quit and take the car. Those who did persist to the end would have a surprise.
Everyone was discussing with excitement after they heard the rules. Many people wanted to fight for the first place. Personally, I wanted to win the surprise as well. Most of the people, including my friends, took the first route, but two adults and one child took the other. Yes, that was my parents and me. I just wanted to break through and challenge myself.

I was eleven years old standing outside in just my underwear while I watched the house that I grew up in rapidly burn to the ground. A few minutes earlier I had been sound asleep in my nice,  warm bed when a scream woke me up.
My grandmother’s bedroom was just next to mine and my brother’s,  A fire had broken out there and awakened her. Hearing her my older brother had sprung into action. While I stumbled around in the smoke and darkness he ran from room to room quickly waking everyone in the house. The house,  however,  was over 50 years old and made of wood. Before we could do anything the fire consumed it. We all barely made it outside before the flames engulfed every room. I stood there shivering while the fire destroyed my books,  clothes,  and toys. I watched helplessly while my Mom cried and my Dad swore. I wondered what was going to happen to us now that we had lost all of our things. As I looked around,  though,  I realized something for the first time: The things that matter,  aren’t things.
I saw my older brother running across the swinging bridge by our house to get help. I saw my oldest brother who was on crutches from an earlier accident standing unsteadily on one leg. I saw my grandmother and Dad huddled together and my Mom holding our little dog in her arms.
I realized at that moment that we were all alive.

Years ago, I became the secretary of Jack, a strict and bad-tempered man.
One day, Jack threw the papers on my desk-his eyebrows knit into a straight line as he glared at me. “What’s wrong?” I asked. He jabbed (戳) a finger at the proposal. “Next time you want to change anything, ask me first,” he said, turning on his heels and leaving me in great anger. How dare he treat me like that, I thought. I had changed one long sentence, and corrected grammar, something I thought I was paid to do.
It’s not that I hadn’t been warned. Other women who had worked my job before me called Jack names I couldn’t repeat. One coworker took me aside the first day. “He’s personally responsible for two different secretaries leaving the firm,” she whispered.
As the weeks went by, I grew to look down upon Jack. His actions made me question much that I believed in, such as turning the other cheek and loving your enemies.
One day another of his rude behaviors left me in tears. I stormed into his office, prepared to lose my job if needed, but not before I let the man know how I felt. I opened the door and Jack glanced up. “What?” he asked abruptly.
Suddenly I knew what I had to do. After all, he deserved it. I sat across from him and said calmly, “Jack, the way you’ve been treating me is wrong. I’ve never had anyone speak to me that way. As a professional, it’s wrong, and I can’t allow it to continue.”
Jack smiled nervously and leaned back in his chair. I closed my eyes briefly. God help me, I prayed. “I want to make you a promise. Whatever you do, I will be a friend,” I said. “I will treat you as you deserve to be treated, with respect and kindness. You deserve that. Everybody does.” I slipped out of the chair and closed the door behind me.
Jack avoided me the rest of the week.

It was spring-the sun was shining, the flowers were blooming, and the birds were singing their beautiful songs. In a nearby basketball stadium, a basketball championship was going on. Kerr, like his elder brother Timmy, was one of the best in the competition; he scored most of his team’s points, but his team did not like that, because Kerr never passed the ball. His coach always told him that it was a team game and not a one-man show. “Kerr, pass the ball more,” insisted Coach Tyler.
“Coach, I am good. I can win this whole tournament by myself if I want to,” responded Kerr.
“Kerr, you need to learn to respect the game!” said Coach Tyler.
“I don’t need to respect anything,” said Kerr.
“Okay then, I don’t need you in my team, Kerr. Get out of here!” said Coach Tyler.
    “Fine!” replied Kerr angrily.
At school Kerr’s friends Zack, Christopher, and Aaron were trying to calm down Kerr, who was still angry about what had happened the previous day. Kerr was usually good in school, but after he was kicked out of the team, his attitude changed. He started doing poorly; he got in trouble and failed classes. Kerr tried to join other basketball teams, but he could not because their list was filled or he was too young or too old. Finally, Kerr was recommended a team by Zack.
    Five months later...
Kerr started passing the ball more, and he still averaged 26.4 points per game. Kerr enjoyed how he played, but he did not like that he was coming off the bench(替补). Kerr proved that he was a star on the court, but still the coach said that he was better coming off the bench.“Coach, I think I have shown that I can start the next game,” said Kerr calmly. “No, Kerr, you are not good enough,” responded the coach. “But...”said Kerr before the coach interrupted him. “No, Kerr!” Kerr started getting mad. “Coach, you need to let me start. I’m the best in this team,” said Kerr proudly. “Kerr, how about you just leave?” shouted the coach.

Upon seeing the van parked outside, he brought cookies to welcome his new neighbors. Tom’s words and the smell of the cookies calmed Mark a lot, but with the boxes in the room in a mess, Mark felt embarrassed. Unexpectedly, Tom came in and helped the hosts clean up the room and finally they sat down together, enjoying the cookies happily.

The rain is still falling, but it could never dampen their hopes for the future.

All of a sudden, Betty felt something touching the bottom of her foot. Failing to resist the impulse of curiosity, she lowered her glance. Within a second, her cheeks paled, and a chill swept over her body. A set of crimson and fierce eyes came into her sight. A shark, its tail shaking, its jaws clicking, made a leap from the sea and afterwards dove back into the water. Picturing the shark teeth tore meat off her leg, Betty felt a sinking in her heart, and her heart in her throat.
“Help! Help!” Betty screamed in horror. No reply. All was silence. The wave of the Pacific Ocean rose, tightening her throat, making it more and more hard to breathe. “God bless,” she prayed desperately with quivering lips. Before the consciousness was lost totally, a familiar voice broke the dead silence. It was Uncle Mark who swam close in a rush, grasped Betty firmly with one hand, and dragged her toward the beach. With the tide gently rolling to her feet, Betty, sitting in the sand felt the wave of relief swept across the beach.

3.It was then that we realized we had lost little Robert. We were supposed to be watching him, and now he had disappeared into the snow. With no footprints or any other signs to follow, coupled with the thought that our mother would kill us for losing him, we began to shout his name. We looked around and waited for a response. However, there was no response at all. With nobody to turn to for help, we were at a loss what to do next.
Then suddenly we noticed a little hand sticking up out of the snow. It must be Robert. We looked at one another and realized that we must have buried him as we threw the snow over our shoulders. We plowed our way through the snow and quickly uncovered him. Luckily, Robert was safe and sound. We made him promise not to tell Mom we had “lost” him. Robert happily agreed because he thought it was fun to be buried alive and wanted to do it again. But for us, it was not fun at all.

    4. He thought of many questions that his parents might ask him. Getting closer to home, Brian beat his brains out to think of ways to deliver the bad news. He thought about starting with, “It wasn’t my fault, and I’m OK. Someone else would cover the cost of the repairs and there were no injuries.” It seemed simple enough. But in his mind appeared the looks on the faces of his parents when he broke the news to them.
As he neared the house, he saw his parents outside working in the front yard. Their jaw dropped as he rolled in front of the house. Brian stopped the car, and before he got out, his mother was at the window. “Are you hurt?” she asked nervously. Brian could tell the concern in her voice, and he assured them he was OK. “Are you sure you are OK?” asked his father. “Don’t worry about the car. We’re thankful you are all right.” Brian could hardly believe his ears, but he sensed his parents’ evident love for him.

    Paragraph 1:
Karson stared at the blank name line for a moment. He knew his plan wouldn’t be so great if he won with a ticket that didn’t belong to him. So he walked up to his teacher. “Miss Evans, I happened to find this ticket on the floor near the bookcase. I think the one who lost it will look for it. And these are mine,” he said, his six tickets into the box. When he turned around to leave, the teacher stopped him.
    Paragraph 2:
“Karson, I’d like you to have another ticket!” said Miss Evans. Karson was amazed and wondered why. Miss Evans smiled and signed to the class to quiet down, “Karson handed in the golden ticket he had just found. I think he is honest and deserves another one!” The class burst into loud applause. Karson happily went back to his seat, eagerly expecting the ticket drawing. He still wanted his name to be picked, but he would feel OK even if it wasn’t. Allison used her cell phone to call 911. Her friend, Alfred, ran quickly back to the camp site. He took their first aid kit and some food and came back to Eric. Allison first gave Eric some food which he ate up quickly as he was very hungry. Then, she began to treat Eric’s in-fected feet while Alfred was comforting him. After that, Eric felt much better and they sat talking to relieve his pain and anxiety while waiting for the rescuers.
Half an hour later, a rescue helicopter arrived. After it landed, three rescuers came out with a stretcher. After asking about Eric’s condition, they supported him onto the stretcher and carried him to the helicopter. Eric expressed his thanks and also told them that it was a “Thanksgiving miracle” that they’d discovered him. When the rescue helicopter took Eric away, Allison and Alfred continued on their camping trip as planned and they thought their trip was already very worthwhile.

    7.One possible version:
Soon, we set off. With the weather being so hot and dry, we wore thick clothes to protect ourselves from being burned, which, however, made us feel uncomfortable. I held on to the hiking pole, walking with difficulty. When sweating through our clothes, we were still only halfway to arriving at our next destination. I was extremely worn out and began to consider giving up and taking the bus straight to my destination. Figuring out what was on my mind, my parents kept encouraging me to keep going.
With their encouragement, I gathered my strength and moved on. I made up my mind to challenge myself and walk the entire desert. Without any hesitation, I kept walking. In the end, I managed to be the only child to walk the entire desert at the age of thirteen. I successfully broke through myself and finished the 72-kilometer walk in the desert. As I stood on the stage with the souvenir gift and watched the crowd cheering and applauding me for my persistence, I was so proud of myself.

8.I realized at that moment that we were all alive. We sat down on the ground in relief. The family turned to each other, with our eyes full of tears with fear. I had never been so scared in all my life. Luckily, everything that was essential had survived the fire. Our lives would continue. We would survive without the "stuff" that was burning. We would all be around to love each other for many years to come. And that was all that mattered.
I still think of that fire in the night that helped me to become who I am today. It showed me for the very first time what is truly essential in this life. It helped me to learn that the love we share is far more important than the things we possess. Live your life then for the things that matter, not for the things you own. Love others. Help everyone. Let the fire inside of you make this world a warmer place.

    9.One possible version:
Jack avoided me the rest of the week. Proposals, files, and letters appeared on my desk while I was at lunch, and my corrected versions were not seen again. I brought cookies to the office one day and left a batch on his desk. Another day I left a note. “Hope your day is going great,” it read. Over the next few weeks, Jack reappeared. He was reserved, but there was no more rudeness. Coworkers cornered me in the break room. “What have done to Jack?” they asked. I shook my head. “Nothing. Jack and I are just becoming friends.” Every time I saw Jack in the hall, I smiled at him. After all, that’s what friends do.
One year after our “talk,” I had my breast cancer surgery but was still scared. Those days, friends and loved ones visited, but no one knew what to say, and many said the wrong things. One day, Jack stood awkwardly in the doorway of my ward. Without a word he placed a package beside me, inside which lay several bulbs (植物鳞茎). “Tulips,” he said. “If you plant them when you get home, they’ll come up next spring. I just want you to know that I think you’ll be there to see them when they come up.” Tears clouded my eyes! In a moment when I prayed for the right word, a man with very few words said all the right things. That’s what friends do!
    【导语】本文以人物为线索展开,讲述了Jack是个严厉且脾气不好的人,作者成为了他的秘书后受到了很多不公平的待遇,作者愤而打算辞职,但在此之前,作者向Jack坦诚说出了自己的感受。

His brother Timmy noticed Kerr came home angry and depressed. “What’s wrong with you?” Timmy asked. “I was forced to leave the basketball team,” said Kerr angrily and sadly. “Why?” asked Timmy again. “I don’t want to come off the bench,” answered Kerr. Hearing that, Timmy persuaded Kerr to go back to the team. “You should change your attitude and respect your team and coach. Basketball is not one person’s game.”
Kerr returned to the stadium. As soon as he saw his coach, he apologized to him. “You are always welcome to join us as long as you realize your mistake.” said the coach. “Thank you, Coach!” Kerr said happily. He went back to the team and continued to play basketball. After several months, his team won the championship owing to his wonderful cooperation with his teammates.
