22、    By day, Robert Titterton is a lawyer. In his spare time though he goes on stage beside pianist Maria Raspopova—not as a musician but as her page turner. "I'm not a trained musician, but I've learnt to read music so I can help Maria in her performance."
Mr Titterton is chairman of the Omega Ensemble but has been the group's official page turner for the past four years. His job is to sit beside the pianist and turn the pages of the score so the musician doesn't have to break the flow of sound by doing it themselves. He said he became just as nervous as those playing instruments on stage.
"A lot of skills are needed for the job. You have to make sure you don't turn two pages at once and make sure you find the repeats in the music when you have to go back to the right spot," Mr Titterton explained.
Being a page turner requires plenty of practice. Some pieces of music can go for 40 minutes and require up to 50 page turns, including back turns for repeat passages. Silent onstage communication is key, and each pianist has their own style of "nodding" to indicate a page turn which they need to practise with their page turner.
But like all performances, there are moments when things go wrong. "I was turning the page to get ready for the next page, but the draft wind from the turn caused the spare pages to fall off the stand," Mr Titterton said. "Luckily I was able to catch them and put them back."
Most page turners are piano students or up-and-coming concert pianists, although Ms Raspopova has once asked her husband to help her out on stage.
"My husband is the worst page turner," she laughed. "He's interested in the music, feeling every note, and I have to say: 'Turn, turn!' Robert is the best page turner I've had in my entire life."
1.What should Titterton be able to do to be a page turner?
    A.Read music. B.Play the piano.
    C.Sing songs. D.Fix the instruments.
2.Which of the following best describes Titterton's job on stage?
    A.Boring. B.Well-paid. C.Demanding. D.Dangerous.
3.What does Titterton need to practise?
A.Counting the pages. B.Recognizing the "nodding".
C.Catching falling objects. D.Performing in his own style.
4.Why is Ms Raspopova's husband "the worst page turner"?
A.He has very poor eyesight. B.He ignores the audience.
C.He has no interest in music. D.He forgets to do his job.
23、    You've heard that plastic is polluting the oceans—between 4.8 and 12.7 million tonnes enter ocean ecosystems every year. But does one plastic straw or cup really make a difference? Artist Benjamin Von Wong wants you to know that it does. He builds massive sculptures out of plastic garbage, forcing viewers to re-examine their relationship to single-use plastic products.
At the beginning of the year, the artist built a piece called "Strawpocalypse," a pair of 10-foot-tall plastic waves, frozen mid-crash. Made of 168,000 plastic straws collected from several volunteer beach cleanups, the sculpture made its first appearance at the Estella Place shopping center in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
Just 9% of global plastic waste is recycled. Plastic straws are by no means the biggest source(来源) of plastic pollution, but they've recently come under fire because most people don't need them to drink with and, because of their small size and weight, they cannot be recycled. Every straw that's part of Von Wong's artwork likely came from a drink that someone used for only a few minutes. Once the drink is gone, the straw will take centuries to disappear.
In a piece from 2018, Von Wong wanted to illustrate(说明) a specific statistic: Every 60 seconds, a truckload's worth of plastic enters the ocean. For this work, titled "Truckload of Plastic," Von Wong and a group of volunteers collected more than 10,000 pieces of plastic, which were then tied together to look like they'd been dumped(倾倒) from a truck all at once.
Von Wong hopes that his work will also help pressure big companies to reduce their plastic footprint.
1.What are Von Wong's artworks intended for?
A.Beautifying the city he lives in. B.Introducing eco-friendly products.
C.Drawing public attention to plastic waste. D.Reducing garbage on the beach.
2.Why does the author discuss plastic straws in Paragraph 3?
A.To show the difficulty of their recycling. B.To explain why they are useful.
C.To voice his views on modern art. D.To find a substitute for them.
3.What effect would "Truckload of Plastic" have on viewers?
    A.Calming. B.Disturbing. C.Refreshing. D.Challenging.
4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Artists' Opinions on Plastic Safety B.Media Interest in Contemporary Art
C.Responsibility Demanded of Big Companies D.Ocean Plastics Transformed into Sculptures
24、When your parents advise you to "get an education" in order to raise your income, they tell you only half the truth. What they really mean is to get just enough education to provide manpower (人力) for your society, but not so much that you prove an embarrassment to your society.
Get a high school diploma, at least. Without that, you will be occupationally dead unless your name happens to be George Bernard Shaw or Thomas Alva Edison, and you can successfully drop out of grade school.
Get a college degree, if possible. With a B.A., you are on the launching pad. But now you have to start to put on the brakes. If you go for a master's degree, make sure it is an M.B.A., and the famous law of diminishing (逐渐减少的)returns begins to take effect.
Do you know, for instance, that long-haul truck drivers earn more per year than full professors? Yes, the average salary for those truckers was $24,000 while the full professors managed to earn just $23,030.
A doctorate is the highest degree you can get. Except for a few specialized fields such as physics or chemistry where the degree can quickly be turned into industrial or commercial purposes, if you pursue such a degree in any other field, you will face a future which is not bright. There are more doctors unemployed or underemployed in this country than any other part of the world.
If you become a doctor in English, history, anthropology, political science, languages or—worst of all—philosophy, you run the risk of becoming overeducated for our national demands. Not for our needs, mind you, but for our demands.
Thousands of doctors are selling shoes, driving cars, waiting on table, and endlessly filling out applications month after month. They may also take a job in some high school or collegiate backwater (闭塞的地方)that pays little.
You can equate the level of income with the level of education only so far. Far enough, that is, to make you useful to the gross national product, but nobody can turn much of a profit on you.
    1. According to the writer, what the society expects of education is to turn out people who _____.
    A. will not be a disgrace to society
    B. will become loyal citizens
    C. can take care of themselves
    D. can meet the nation's demand as a source of manpower
    2. The nation is only interested in people _____.
    A. with diplomas
    B. who specialize in physics and chemistry
    C. who are valuable to the gross national product
    D. who receive little education
    3. Which of the following is NOT true?
    A. Bernard Shaw didn't finish high school, nor did Edison.
    B. One must think carefully before pursuing a master's degree.
    C. The higher your education level is, the more money you will earn.
    D. If you are too well-educated, you'll be overeducated for society's demands.
    4. The writer sees education as _____.
    A. a means of meeting a country's demands
    B. a way to broaden one's horizons
    C. a more important thing than jobs
    D. an opportunity that everyone should have

I worked from the time when I was four and raised seven children, all of whom were college graduates. It seemed I'd done everything I'd ever wanted to do in my life, but I had one regret. I was born in 1898, the oldest of five kids. Papa couldn't spare the money to make me go to school, so I worked in the fields with him till I was 21 years old.
Everywhere I went, I learned some hard lessons about what happens to a man who even can't read the alphabet. People cheat you out of wages. They sell you a ticket to one city, take your money and hand you a ticket to somewhere else.
By 1928, I'd been wandering for nine years. I met a woman named Elzenia. We fell in love, married and moved to Dallas, where I got work— fixing roads for the city. When Amelia, the oldest of our seven children, first went to school, I took my wife aside. "Elzenia," I said, "I don't want the kids to know I can't read or write."
In 1938, one day my boss called me in. "George," he said, "no one knows those machines like you do. I'd like to promote you." But my thrill and surprise were cut short when he said, "Fill out this application and we'll get you a raise." I couldn't admit the truth. I thanked him and walked out of his office. I did stay right where I was, until I turned 65 and my boss made me retire. But I didn't stop working. For the next 25 years, I lived a happy life, but it still seemed to me like something was missing.
One day, a young fellow handed me a piece of paper. H's information about adult education classes, where people can learn to read and write. I thought of my friends and neighbors and what they might think if they found out I couldn't read. After all these years, my secret would be out. But all my life I've wanted to read. It was high time for action.
    Paragraph 1:
The young man drove me to a huge building.

    Paragraph 2:
    I'm still going to school.

    18、答案:C
W: Ladies and gentlemen,
It gives me a great pleasure to be invited here to make a speech. Education is very important in my heart. I grew up in a small village in China. In those days, sixty percent of the villagers couldn't read and of them women accounted for over a half. So my father opened a night school to teach them how to read. With his help many people learned to read newspapers for the first time.
As his daughter, I know what education means to the people, especially those without it. After generations of hard work, China has come a long way in education. I myself benefit a lot from that progress. Otherwise I would never have become a singer and a professor of music.
Many years ago my father made a small difference in his village. Together we can make a big difference. I was once asked about my Chinese dream. I said I hope all children especially girls can have access to good education.
    Thank you very much.
    19、答案:B
    20、答案:A
We will visit some of the best-preserved Roman monuments"和Southern Spain部分中的"we explore historical monuments and architecture"可知,游客在普罗旺斯和西班牙南部都可以看到历史纪念碑,故A项正确。
Discover the China of 'past ages,' its walled cities, temples and mountain scenery with Prof. Robert Thorp"可知,Thorp 教授对中国最有研究,故C项正确。
Tour highlights include the Roman city of Dougga... unique for underground cities"可知,突尼斯之行的最精彩的部分在地下城,故B项正确。
I've learnt to read music so I can help Maria in her performance以及第三段内容可知, 作为一名乐谱翻页员, 蒂特顿需要学会识谱, 在正确的时刻给乐谱翻页, 以确保钢琴家的演奏准确且流畅。
A lot of skills are needed for the job.
Silent onstage communication is key, and each pianist has their own style of "nodding"...which they need to practise with their page turner.
He's interested in the music, feeling every note, and I have to say: 'Turn, turn!'
He builds massive sculptures out of plastic garbage, forcing viewers to re-examine their relationship to single-use plastic products."
Just 9% of global plastic waste is recycled. Plastic straws are by no means the biggest source of plastic pollution...because of their small size and weight, they cannot be recycled." 故选A项。
What they really mean is to get just enough education to provide manpower (人力)for your society"可知,社会对教育的期望是培养出那些可以满足国家需求的人力,故D正确。
Far enough, that is, to make you useful to the gross national product, but nobody can turn much of a profit on you."
Yes, the average salary for those truckers was $24,000 while the full professors managed to earn just $23,030."
故A正确。

You can start to find out some books that are included in the top selling lists." 其中G项中的"those books"指代上文的 "some books that are included in the top selling lists"。
You can also ask some of your friends about their favorite books."

Read the book in a glance." C项“你可以浏览这本书” 符合语境,其中“look through”与标题中的“in a glance”呼应。 故选C。

    Paragraph 1:
The young man drove me to a huge building. He led me into a spacious classroom, which was crowded with elderly people like me. Through chatting, I learned that they had all been longing to read and write but never had the chance to go to school. As the bell rang, in came the teacher, a woman well past forty. After a warm and brief greeting, we started our lesson. First we learned to read the alphabet and though I made mistakes at times, no one laughed at me. Everyone helped each other kindly.
    Paragraph 2:
I'm still going to school. Though faced with the most challenging event of my life, I'm full of courage and confidence. With the generous help of my teacher, friends and my children, I have made huge progress in study. Now I'm never shy about admitting the truth that once I was not able to read and write at all. Besides, I'm eager to encourage more elderly people to attend the adult education classes, because it's never too late to learn.
