(2023·湖南·高二湖南师大附中校考期中)It was near New Year 2014, and David Fajgenbaum, who was battling Castleman disease, was rushed to a CT scan in an Arkansas hospital. Tears streamed down his face. He thought about the first patient who’d died under his care and how her brain had bled in a similar way from a stroke(中风).
But he survived. Also, this experience led David to complete “the undertaking” surprising his doctors. “You learn a lot by almost dying,” they said.
It was in 2010 that David got very sick and was hospitalized for five months. He was learning to become a doctor at the University of Pennsylvania in memory of his mother who died of cancer. The examination showed it was idiopathic multi-centric Castleman disease (MCD). First described in 1954, Castleman presents partly like an autoimmune(自身免疫的) condition and partly like cancer. It doesn’t happen very often — there’re only around 7,000 new cases each year in the United States, so a very limited number of experts are on it.
In his hospital bed, David felt weak. His organs were failing, and he noticed curious red spots on his skin. He asked doctors what the “blood moles” meant. But they, focused on saving his life, weren’t interested in them. Castleman disease struck David four more times over the next three years. Despite it all, he managed to graduate and later founded the Castleman Disease Collaborative Network (CDCN) devoted to fighting Castleman disease.
In late 2013, Castleman struck again, landing David in that Arkansas hospital. It marked his closest brush with death yet. After this time, David set out to try to save his own life. Examining his medical charts, he zeroed in on an idea that researchers hadn’t explored. With considerable effort, he found a drug called Sirolimus might be beneficial to his discase. After consulting with his doctors, he picked up the drug. So far, it’s working. David is in recovery and devoting his medical career to saving other patients like him. “I hope my story offers lessons far beyond medicine about what people can do when they’re up against a brick wall,” says David.
4.How did David feel when having the CT scan?
A.Grateful. B.Awkward. C.Hopeless. D.Unsure.
5.What does “the undertaking” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.David founded the CDCN. B.David recovered from Castleman.
C.David survived the CT scan. D.David found a way to treat his disease.
6.What do we know about Castleman disease?
A.It is a rare disease. B.It killed David’s mother.
C.It is a kind of cancer. D.It interested many experts.
7.Which of the following can best describe David?
A.Selfless and optimistic. B.Determined and observant.
C.Ambitious and confident. D.Warm-hearted and hardworking.
【答案】4.C 5.D 6.A 7.B
根据第一段“It was near New Year 2014, and David Fajgenbaum, who was battling Castleman disease, was rushed to a CT scan in an Arkansas hospital. Tears streamed down his face. He thought about the first patient who’d died under his care and how her brain had bled in a similar way from a stroke(中风). ( 2014年新年临近,正在与Castleman病作斗争的大卫·法根鲍姆(David Fajgenbaum)被紧急送往阿肯色州一家医院做CT扫描。眼泪顺着他的脸流下来。他想起了在他的治疗下死去的第一个病人,以及她的大脑是如何因中风而以类似的方式流血的。)”因为想到他的治疗下死去的第一个病人,由此可推断,他当时是非常绝望的,故选C。
5.词句猜测题。根据下文““You learn a lot by almost dying,” they said.(“濒死可以学到很多东西,”他们说。)”和最后一段“After this time, David set out to try to save his own life. Examining his medical charts, he zeroed in on an idea that researchers hadn’t explored. With considerable effort, he found a drug called Sirolimus might be beneficial to his case. After consulting with his doctors, he picked up the drug. So far, it’s working. David is in recovery and devoting his medical career to saving other patients like him.( 在这之后,大卫开始试图挽救自己的生命。
根据第三段“First described in 1954, Castleman presents partly like an autoimmune(自身免疫的) condition and partly like cancer. It doesn’t happen very often — there’re only around 7,000 new cases each year in the United States, so a very limited number of experts are on it. (首次描述是在1954年,Castleman的表现部分像自身免疫疾病,部分像癌症。这种情况并不经常发生——在美国每年只有大约7000例新病例,所以专家数量非常有限。)”由此可知这是一种罕见的病,故选A。
7.推理判断题。根据第四段“In his hospital bed, David felt weak. His organs were failing, and he noticed curious red spots on his skin. He asked doctors what the “blood moles” meant.( 躺在病床上的大卫感到很虚弱。他的器官正在衰竭,他注意到皮肤上有奇怪的红斑。他问医生“红斑”意为这什么。)”和最后一段“After this time, David set out to try to save his own life. Examining his medical charts, he zeroed in on an idea that researchers hadn’t explored. With considerable effort, he found a drug called Sirolimus might be beneficial to his case. After consulting with his doctors, he picked up the drug. So far, it’s working. David is in recovery and devoting his medical career to saving other patients like him.( 在这之后,大卫开始试图挽救自己的生命。在检查他的病历时,他把注意力集中在一个研究人员从未探索过的想法上。经过相当大的努力,他发现一种名为西罗莫司的药物可能对他的疾病有益。在咨询了医生之后,他选择了这种药。到目前为止,它是有效的。大卫正在康复中,他的医疗事业致力于拯救其他和他一样的病人。)” 由此可知大卫是一个善于发现,有洞察力和意志坚定的人,故选B。

(2023·广东广州·高二广州市第八十六中学校考期中)If you’re looking for a way to achieve naturally glowing skin, you needn’t look further than face yoga. That’s what Akiko Grabin, a face yoga teacher believes.
The main reason people give it a shot is because of its effect on skin, with Grabin claiming that it can prevent wrinkles, or at least smooth their appearance. And there’s some evidence to back these claims. Research from 2018 found that 30 minutes a day of facial exercises over a 20-week period might improve the appearance of skin in middle-aged women.
Takatsu is credited as the creator of the Face Yoga Method. She wrote about how she started it on her website, saying she came up with the concept following a car crash in which her body was injured and her face was left looking asymmetrical(不对称的). Standing in front of the mirror one day, Takatsu had a realization; “If I exercise my body muscles, I should be able to do the same for my face.” After Takatsu started practicing this method, people began praising her appearance and were eager to know how she achieved such results. The Face Yoga Metjod was born.
But Dr Imaan Joshi, a cosmetician working in a beauty agency, remains skeptical of the practice. She believes face yoga can have “some beneficial effects” in terms of relaxing muscles, but says there’s no evidence it can reduce or prevent wrinkles. Joshi explains that wrinkles form from repetitive, life--long movement of facial muscles, accompanies by loss of collagen(胶原)and fat as we age. “So, there’s no realistic way of getting rid of wrinkles apart from reducing or freezing the movement of these muscles.”
8.Why do people try to do face yoga?
A.Doing face yoga can do good to people’s health.
B.Face yoga is the best way to achieve smooth skin.
C.Doing face yoga is beneficial to people’s skin.
D.Face yoga is highly recommended by experts.
9.What inspired Takatsu to create face yoga?
A.The wish to heal her injured face. B.The praise for her appearance.
C.The lecture she attended. D.The comments on her website.
10.What does the underlined word “cosmetician” in the last paragraph mean?
A.A professor who studies physical exercise and health.
B.A teacher who teaches biology.
C.A physician who improves people’s looks.
D.An adviser who provides the old with nutritious diets.
11.Which statement may Joshi agree with?
A.Face yoga is an effective way to get rid of wrinkles.
B.The claim that face yoga can relax muscles lacks evidence.
C.Repetitive movement of facial muscles causes loss of collagen.
D.More movements of facial muscles can result in the formation of wrinkles.
【答案】8.C 9.A 10.C 11.D
根据第一段中“If you’re looking for a way to achieve naturally glowing skin, you needn’t look further than face yoga.(如果你正在寻找一种让皮肤自然容光焕发的方法,那就试试面部瑜伽吧)”和第二段中“The main reason people give it a shot is because of its effect on skin, with Grabin claiming that it can prevent wrinkles, or at least smooth their appearance.(人们尝试它的主要原因是它对皮肤的影响,Grabin声称它可以防止皱纹,或至少使皮肤外表光滑)”可知人们做面部瑜伽是因为做面部瑜伽对人的皮肤有益,故选C。
根据第三段中“she came up with the concept following a car crash in which her body was injured and her face was left looking asymmetrical (不对称的).(在一次车祸中,她的身体受伤,脸看起来不对称,于是她想到了这个创意)”可知Takatsu创作面部瑜伽是想治愈她受伤的脸,故选A。
根据最后一段“Joshi explains that wrinkles form from repetitive, life-long movement of facial muscles, accompanied by loss of collagen (胶原)and fat as we age.( Joshi解释说皱纹形成于面部肌肉重复的终身的运动,和伴随年龄增长胶原蛋白和脂肪的流失)”可知Joshi认为面部肌肉的更多运动会导致皱纹的形成。故选D。

(2023·山东潍坊·高二统考期中)Product placement is a form of advertising in which a company pays a director to place its product on the set of a movie or TV show. It isn’t new. The oldest examples date all the way back to the invention of motion pictures, when the Lever Brothers’ Sunlight Soap appeared in the Lumiere films in 1896. But as streaming has become more popular, product placements have become an even more attractive option for advertisers now.
When watching web videos, most consumers either skip or ignore the advertisements that run before the video starts. So as advertisers struggle to reach consumers, they are increasingly turning to product placement, spending advertising budgets to get their advertisements into media content in ways that can’t be skipped or ignored. Studies have shown they increase viewers’ awareness of products and their positive attitudes toward them.
Not all product placements are effective, though. Those that seem to influence viewers the most are those that strike the careful balance between being noticeable and not too boring. Viewers tend to be turned off if the product placement is too noticable, as when a character in the show holds the product and talks about it.
Viewers are most influenced by product placements in which the product or brand name is spoken by one of the characters but not shown. Also viewers may be more attracted to product placements that appear earlier in a show or movie. Because we become more engaged in the plot and characters of a show or movie as it progresses. If a placement appears at the climax — the moment when our attention is fixed on what will happen next — we’re either less likely to notice the placement or more likely to be annoyed if we do notice it.
With increasing online viewers and better designed product placement, perhaps advertisers will consider product placement their first choice and decrease their spending on traditional advertising, like TV and print ads.
12.What can we know about product placement?
A.It is popular nowadays. B.It makes streaming attractive.
C.It first appeared in TV shows. D.It aims to make videos interesting.
13.What does the underlined word “ they ” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Advertisments. B.Videos. C.Advertisers. D.Consumers.
14.Which is the most effective product placement in a movie?
A.The product is shown before the movie is on.
B.The product appears in a conversation at the climax.
C.The product is in the character’s hand at the beginning.
D.The product is mentioned not long after the movie is on.
15.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Product placement: a future trend for advertising
B.Product placement: a new driving force behind movies
C.Product placement: a mirror of the advertisement history
D.Product placement: a perfect companion to online videos

根据第二段“ So as advertisers struggle to reach consumers, they are increasingly turning to product placement, spending advertising budgets to get their advertisements into media content in ways that can’t be skipped or ignored.”(因此,随着广告商努力接近消费者,他们越来越多地转向植入式广告,将广告预算投入到媒体内容中,使其不能被跳过或忽视。)
根据第四段“Also viewers may be more attracted to product placements that appear earlier in a show or movie.”( 观众也可能更容易被电视剧或电影中较早出现的植入式广告所吸引。)
通读全文,尤其是最后一段“With increasing online viewers and better designed product placement, perhaps advertisers will consider product placement their first choice and decrease their spending on traditional advertising, like TV and print ads.”(随着越来越多的在线观众和设计更好的植入式广告,也许广告商会把植入式广告作为他们的第一选择,减少在传统广告上的支出,比如电视和平面广告。) 故选A。

Dear David,
I am delighted to learn that you would like to be a volunteer in the next Winter Olympics. And I’d like to share with you my experience as a volunteer for the Beijing Winter Olympics and offer you some practical advice.
Firstly, I have to say that it is the most exciting and meaningful experience for me to be a volunteer for the Beijing Winter Olympics. And it has a profound and significant influence on my life. Honestly, I once made full preparations for it. I had to learn all the job duties, mastered at least one foreign language, and most importantly, be willing to devote all my time to serving athletes with great patience and kindness.
I think that if you could do these, you will certainly become a qualified volunteer.
Yours,
Li Hua
When I graduated from the university, I devoted myself to teaching English in a small village school. One day, a lady called me and told me she was Simon’s mother. She said she wanted to call on me at a right time. Honestly speaking, I had been worried about myself. It made me feel a little fearful of seeing her because I was a new teacher and I gave an honest account of the students’ work. In Simon’s case, the grades were very low. He had never spent much time finishing his schoolwork carefully so that he couldn’t even read his own handwriting, not to mention listening to his teachers in class. But he was a bright student. He discussed adult subjects with nearly adult comprehension. His work in no way reflected his abilities.
So when Simon’s mother entered my office and appeared in front of me with a broad smile on her face, my palms(手心)were sweating. I was completely unprepared for her kisses on both my cheeks. “I came to thank you,” she said, which surprised me beyond speech. “Simon has become a different person. He talks of how he loves me, and he has begun to make friends, and for the first time in his twelve years, he has recently spent an afternoon at a friend’s house. I want to tell you how grateful I am. You have helped my son develop his self-respect,” she continued. Then she kissed me again and left.
I sat, feeling really shocked, for about half an hour, wondering what had just happened. How did I make such a life-changing difference to that boy without even knowing it? At the very moment, I just failed to find out a reasonable explanation for what I was going through.

I finally came to remember that several months before Simon’s mother’s coming, when some students were giving reports in the front of the class, Jeanne spoke quietly, and to encourage her to raise her voice, I said, “Speak up. Simon is the expert on this. He is the only one you have to convince, and he can’t hear you in the back of the room.” That was it, but I saw a smile flash across Simon’s face.
From that day on, I noticed some changes in Simon. He sat up straighter, paid more attention, smiled more, and became happier, which was all because he happened to be the last kid in the last row. The boy who most needed praise was the one who took the last seat that day. This experience taught me the most valuable lesson over the years of my
