How to Use a Modern Public Library
Has it been a while since your last visit to a public library? If so you may be surprised to learn that libraries have changed for the better. It’s been years since they were dusty little rooms with books. They have transformed themselves into places where you can develop your love of knowledge, meet interesting people, or find out how to start a business.
Check out a book. While libraries still loan out (出借) books, you’ll find it easier to get a copy of whatever you’re looking for, thanks to a cooperative network of area libraries. Via such networks, libraries share their books with each other through the use of delivery vehicles. Once the book you’ve requested is delivered to the nearest branch, they will inform you by e-mail, so you can pick it up.
Check out other items. The library is now a multimedia zone, loaded with information in many formats (载体形式). You can borrow movies on DVDs, music on CDs, and popular magazines. Some libraries even loan out toys and games. If a popular magazine you want isn’t offered and the library keeps a list of such requests, they may bring it in when enough interest is shown.
Join targeted reading groups. Libraries will often hold reading-group sessions aimed at various age groups. Perhaps you’d like to learn a language or improve your English. The library may sponsor a language group you could join. If you have difficulties reading, ask about special reading opportunities. Your library might be able to accommodate you. And you might find it relaxing to bring your small kid to a half-hour Story Time while you sit quietly in a corner with a good book.
Start a business using the help of your local library. If you want to have a business of your own, your local library can become a launch space for it. In library books and computers, you can find information on starting a business. Many libraries will help you with locally supplied information about business management shared through chambers of commerce (商会) and government agencies, and they will offer printing, faxing and database services you need.

3.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To point out the importance of public libraries.

Lino Marrero, 14, of Frisco, Texas, was on the soccer field when the new inspiration hit.
During a break in practice, Lino discovered that his smartphone was dead and he didn't have a charger. His mind wandered back to a lesson in school on kinetic energy(动能), a kind of energy produced by an object in motion. Lino thought, "What if I could make use of the energy wasted on the field to power the phone?"
That moment led Lino to invent the Kinetic Kickz 2.0. It's something like a rechargeable battery that fits into the sole(鞋底) of a shoe, collecting energy produced from walking. The energy can then be used to power portable devices. Marrero calculates that 12 minutes of walking can generate enough kinetic energy to charge 10% of a cellphone battery.
A device like this could change everyday life for many people. All around the world, there are people who don't have access to electricity. Being able to even light up a little lightbulb on their ceiling would make a big difference. He dreamed that the technology could be used to create clean energy and limit the effects of climate change.
Lino came up with his first invention when he was in fourth grade. He invented String Ring—an adjustable ban that protects the fingers as they move along the strings of a cello(大提琴). It won first place in a state competition. Now Lino's developing a String Ring for guitar player.
"It's usually been about helping other people." Lino says about inventing. The ninth grader encourages others to see their everyday problems as opportunities to come up with ideas for inventions, too. "Kids are better inventors than grown-ups at times, because they can be more creative," Lino says. "I just want to inspire more people to want to become inventors and help change the world."
1.What motivated Lino to invent Kinetic Kickz 2.0?
A. His everyday practice on the soccer field.
B. His concerns for the environment protection.
C. The helplessness when his phone was out of power.
D. The knowledge he learned during his physics lessons.
2.What does the Kinetic Kickz do?
A. It changes people's thought of fashion.
B. It has completely changed people's life.
C. It promotes the performance of batteries.
D. It could store the energy generated from moving.
3.Which of the following best describes Marrero?
A. Responsible and creative. B. Devoted and ambitious.
C. Demanding and cooperative. D. Optimistic and generous.
4.What does the text intend to do?
A. Present a new technology. B. Tell a story of an inventive boy.
C. Introduce an energy- gathering device. D. Explain the way to become an inventor.

As a child, Rob Stewart loved the natural world. “He loved everything in the sea, but sharks the most,’’ said his mother, Sandy Stewart.
Stewart spent his life studying and photographing sharks and other sea creatures, and creating films. Sadly, he died in 2017 at the age of 37 in a diving(潜水) accident. The accident happened while Stewart was filming Sharkvoater Extinction , which members of his crew (工作人员) completed after his death.
Knowing that about 25% of shark species were endangered and sharks might soon be extinct, Stewart worked hard to raise awareness (意识) of sharks and their key role in nature. Stewart believed that they should be protected against humans and other enemies. He studied how illegal shark finning(割鱼鳍) has led to a great fall in the shark population.
When Stewart found out about the finning, he tried to end it. As an experienced diver and skilled cinematographer, he was able to raise awareness of the problem by filming sharks in their natural environment. His films, said Sandy Stewart, showed people “how beautiful the underwater creatures are. People would fall in love with them and work to protect them.”
As of 2013,55 countries had banned (禁止) shark finning. Stewart lived and died a hero in the pursuit of saving sharks and the sea. He is believed to have saved one-third of the world’s sharks.
Stewart's parents hope kids will continue his story by supporting shark-friendly actions. They encourage kids to buy or ask their parents to buy shark-free products.
Another thing that young people can do is learn more about sharks. A good place to start is “Shark Database,” an online resource that was created by Rob Stewart’s friends.
“It’ s your generation that we want to make sure sees the world that Rob saw and does whatever you can to protect the big fish,” said Stewart’s father. “One person can make a big difference.”
1.What do we know about Rob Stewart?
A. He made Sharkwater Extinction in 2017.
B. He died because of a shark attack.
C. He led a research team studying the sea.
D. He was interested in sea animals.
2.What did Rob Stewart do to end illegal shark finning?
A. He encouraged people to buy shark-free products.
B. He made films showing sharks living naturally.
C. He wrote to the government asking for a ban on shark finning.
D. He collected information to show the influence of illegal shark finning
3.How may Rob Stewart's action to save sharks be described?
A. Creative. B. Fruitless. C. Successful. D. Unwelcome.
4.What does “the world that Rob saw" refer to?
A. About a quarter of shark species were in danger.
B. Less than 50 countries banned shark finning.
C. Little action was taken to protect sharks.
D. Human behavior was the main cause of shark extinction.

Added sugar exists in nearly 70 percent of packaged (袋装的) foods and is found in bread, snacks, and most breakfast foods. Each American eats about 17 teaspoons(茶匙) of added sugar a day. That’s about double the suggested limit for men and three times as much as the limit for women.
A number of health organizations agree that cutting back on added sugar is a good idea. They believe that added sugar is a main cause of obesity, but normal-weight people can experience the same health problems connected with too much sugar. A 15-year study found that eating high amounts of added sugar doubles the risk of heart disease, even for people who aren’t overweight. Added sugar has also been connected with an increased risk for diabetes and even Alzheimer’s disease.
And increasingly, the scientific community is realizing the worrying nature of added sugar. Brain scan studies show that fructose(果糖) put in packaged foods influences how we experience pleasure. Eating lots of fructose in packaged foods can create changes in the brain similar to those found in alcohol addicts(有酒瘾的人).
The fructose found in packaged foods is taken from corn and sugar cane, and much or all of the fiber has been taken away. Without the fiber to slow it down, your body gets a big amount of fructose that can cause health problems. However, not to worry: When you eat a strawberry or other fruits, you are eating fructose in its natural state, and it comes with a lot of fiber, which slows the speed at which sugar enters your blood. Your body can deal with fructose well when it’s eaten as fruit.
1.What do we know about Americans from paragraph 1?
A. They are adding more sugar to their foods.
B. They are eating more packaged foods.
C. They prefer added sugar to natural sugar.
D. They eat too much added sugar.
2.What did the brain scan studies find out about added sugar?
A. It can lead to people being unable to stop taking it.
B. It may be connected with Alzheimer's disease.
C. It can influence how the brain works.
D. It may cause heart disease.
3.What does the author think of eating fructose in fruits?
A. It makes the blood run slowly. B. It is harmful.
C. It is all right. D. It can cause health problems.
4.What does the text mainly discuss?
A. Why fructose works best with fiber.
B. How added sugar can influence your health.
C. How fructose does Americans good.
D. Why added sugar can be found in so many kinds of foods.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写词数应为150左右。
It was a rough week. The price of oil skyrocketed as the temperature dropped sharply in Maine. I had missed three days of work so my paycheck was going to be lower than normal. I was stressed. I shopped strategically, looking for every possible way to cut pennies so I could buy groceries and keep the house warm.
My eight-year-old son didn't understand when I told him we were struggling that week. He wanted a special kind of yogurt, but I didn't have the extra three dollars to buy it for him. It was the kind of yogurt with a cartoon kid riding a skateboard in the front of the box, and a mere two spoonfuls in each cup. It was the kind of product that wasted a parent's money and made me hate advertising.
I felt guilty as a parent when the big eyes looked at me with confusion, as if to say, "It's just yogurt. What's the big deal?" So I found a way. I put something back as single mothers often do. He got his yogurt.
On the way driving back from the grocery store, I noticed a homeless man holding a sign by the side of the road. My heart hurt, and I tried not to look at him. I watched people stay away from him on the street and walk by without even meeting his eyes. My son didn't seem to care much, either. I looked at the man closely then—bare hands grasping a piece of cardboard, snot(鼻涕) frozen to his face, a worn-out jacket. And there I was struggling because I had to buy oil and groceries. But I decided to help him. I pulled over to the man and handed him a five-dollar bill.
Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised.

On that day, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn't have done.

答案以及解析
第一部分 听力
第一节
1.答案:C
解析:W: Shall I open the window?
M: No, please don’t. I’m not hot. Are you all right?
W: Well, this room is very small. I don’t feel very well in a small room.
M: Let’s go outside then.
2.答案:B
解析:M: I’ve failed the exam. What shall I do?
W: Don’t be so sad. What about going to a dance party or to the movies? That would cheer you up.
3.答案:B
解析:W: Good afternoon, sir. How may I help you?
M: Hello, I’m Peter Brown. I just checked out this morning, but I left my mobile phone in my room.
W: What’s your room number, please?
4.答案:C
解析:W: How long had you studied English before you came here?
M: For three years in high school, but I didn’t learn much, because most time I spoke Chinese with others. It was kind of like the Spanish you learnt here in high school.
5.答案:A
解析:W: You mean it’s still not fixed?
M: Not yet. Too bad it broke down on the hottest day of the year. And the really bad news is that I still have to buy a part in town before I can fix it.
答案:6.B; 7.A
解析:
M: Is there a big generation gap between parents and their children in your country?
W: Yes, there is. Teenagers do not want to live traditional lives. They want to go out to have fun and explore the world. They want to develop their own views of life. Parents usually try to discourage them, but they don’t often succeed.
M: Parents usually give their children more freedom in my country. But sometimes they give them too much freedom.
W: You are probably right.
答案:8.A; 9.C
解析:
W: I need to make a plane reservation. I need to fly to New York City.
M: When will you leave?
W: I need a flight on July 4th.
M: You can fly out of Los Angeles International or Burbank Airport. Which do you prefer?
W: I will fly out of whatever airport has the cheapest price.
M: If you have a choice, what time of day would you prefer to fly?
W: Any time is OK. I would like to be booked on the least expensive flight.
答案:10.A; 11.B; 12.B
解析:
W: So Chris, tell me something about your job.
M: I like my job very much. I don’t have to wear a uniform — you know, with a cap and all, like they do at some of the other hotels or restaurants, but I do wear a suit. A tailor-made one, not just any old suit.
W: That sounds wonderful. You must look smart in it.
M: Inside, at the front desk, they think I look smarter than the boss. I’m not so sure about that, but I do like to look good for the guests.
W: That’s great.
M: I’m the first person they see when they go into the hotel. And I’ve got this long black overcoat, as well, because it can get pretty cold standing here in winter, I can tell you.
答案:13.C; 14.A; 15.B; 16.A
解析:
M: Good morning, Lake Camping Center. Can I help you?
W: Oh, yes. I am interested in bringing a group of children to your center this summer and I’d like some information about your center.
M: Good. We’re a place where you can come and enjoy great fun.
W: I think we would like to have an educational visit and some fun. I was thinking of some of the children who failed exams and need to retake them next year.
M: I see. Well, we have really good teachers in different subjects. And we offer sailing, volleyball, boating and quite a few other sports. Most children have never tried horse-riding, so we offer courses in that, too. It is the most popular with children.
W: That sounds good. And how many days could the children stay here?
M: For one week. Groups always arrive on a Saturday evening, and leave on the following Sunday morning.
W: That would be fine. Now, about prices?
M: The cost would be $425 per child and $480 per adult.
W: Okay. I’ll speak to my headmaster and get back to you as soon as possible.
M: Good. I look forward to hearing from you.
答案:17.C; 18.A; 19.C; 20.B
解析:W: We have the exciting news to give to you today. Our yearly Young Person’s Short Story Competition is open now. The competition is open to anyone aged between 13 and 18. Your story should be between 3,000 words and 10,000 words long. It must have a title. This is the fourth year of the competition and this year there is an extra subject. The regular subjects of “comedy” and “mystery” are still choices, but this year we have added the theme of “world travel”. This year’s judges are the successful writer of travel books, Bob Johnson, children’s author, Jenny Paige and short story writer, Alan Dobson. There are some amazing prizes: first prize is £5,000; second prize is £2,000 and third prize is £1,000. The winning stories will be published in the major literature magazine, New Authors. So get your thinking hats on. The deadline is Friday, 25th September. And a week after that on October 1st, we will read out the results. 第四部分 写作
第一节
答案:
Boys and girls,
I'm honored to give this speech. With the development of society and economy, the number of cars is increasing quickly, giving off more carbon dioxide, causing global warming. So it is high time that we should go green.
Firstly, we should raise people's awareness of the importance of going green. Secondly, it's necessary to try to ride bicycles instead of using cars when we go out. What's more, we should make full use of water, electricity and so on. Besides, it's a good idea to classify our rubbish and recycle it in our daily life.
That's all. Thank you.
第二节
答案:
Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised. "Mum, why are you so generous to this stranger while so mean to me when I asked for a yogurt?" I explained that if we were blind to the poor man's situation, he would be freezing. He didn't have a home or food to eat after all. We could spare $5 even if we were financially stressed. Finally, my son nodded and fixed his eyes on his yogurt.
On that day, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn't have done. He looked at his yogurt and handed it to the man outside his window. It was just a matter of a few spoonfuls of yogurt, but it was all he had, and he gave it to someone who needed it more than he wanted it. He showed me that I was doing well as a mother. There is always kindness if we open our eyes, and we always have the opportunity to pass kindness to someone else.
