Ekua Holmes and Elam Walker are cousins who grew up together in Roxbury, Mass. They based their first book named Dream Street on their childhood living placea beautiful place full of parks and gardens, full of different kinds of houses, old and new, full of different persons, old and young.

“We grew up together, played a lot together and created a lot together,” says Elam Walker. She was a lawyer but gave up her job to write. They knew they wanted to work on a book together, but they didn’t quite know where to begin. So Holmes began sending her cousin images of collages (拼贴画) with their experiences of daily life.

In them Elam Walker found some poems in a book and a piece of wallpaper in their home from the 1950s...cloth and lace (饰带) used before and things like that. Elam Walker love all the things that have been used before because they already had a life, and they already had a story.

Elam Walker pieced together the story, filling Dream Street with characters from their childhood. They named the librarian after Elam Walker’s mother, Ms. Barbara, who loved books, especially children’s books and thought children’s books could solve the problems of the world. They were also inspired by everyone in the neighborhood; from their teachers, to their cousins, to church ladies. “I was always crazy about them, in their beautiful hats and flowers. And even people at the bus stop,” says Holmes. “Those are the moments that we may walk by every day but not realize how precious they are.”

Habitat loss, pesticides (农药) and climate change are threatening insect populations worldwide. In 2019, Biological Conservation reported that 40% of all insects species are declining (减少) globally and that a third of them are endangered.

And while it may sound nice to live in a world with fewer bad insects, environmental writer Oliver Milman says that human beings would be in big trouble without insects. That’s because insects play important roles in pollinating (给……授粉) plants we eat, breaking down waste in forest soil and forming the base of a food chain that other larger animals — including humans — rely upon.

“It would be an extremely terrible place to live in — and certainly not something we should ever aim for.” Milman says of an insect-free existence. “You would certainly have mass starvation and social unrest... It’d be a place where there would be smelly waste and dead bodies everywhere because insects that break down those materials would be gone.”

Milman charts the troubling decline of insects in his new book, The Insect Crisis: The Fall of the Tiny Empires That Run the World. He says that while it’s impossible to know exactly what’s happening with every insect species in the world, the overall trends are not good: The butterfly population in North America has declined quickly in the past 40 years, for example, and a U. N. assessment done in 2019 found that half a million insect species are under threat of extinction, some in the coming decades.

“The world, our surroundings, would be far quieter, far duller without insects.” he says. “When you start kind of digging down into these figures looking at the research, it’s clear that there’s something seriously wrong... There is a straight decline in most insect populations, and that spells major trouble for them but also for us.”

    28. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about insects?

    A. Their classification. B. Their importance.

    C. Their food chain. D. Their population.

    29. What can be inferred about Milman’s new book?

    A. It describes the worrying decline of insects.

    B. It tells what’s happening with all insect species.

    C. It shows half a million butterfly species will be in danger of extinction.

    D. It explains why the number of butterflies in South America has increased.

    30. What is the author’s attitude to the decline of insect population?

    A. Positive. B. Unconcerned. C. Worried. D. Doubtful.

    31. What is the text mainly about?

    A. The introduction of the endangered insects.

    B. The effects of the declining insects’ population.

    C. The ways of increasing insects’ population.

    D. The reasons of threatening insects’ population.

    D

A study on astronauts found that a short sleep during the day up to two and a half hours long improved working memory performance. Working memory includes focusing attention on one task while holding other tasks in memory, so a poor working memory could result in errors.

Taking a short sleep may make you think more clearly for the period right after you wake up and maybe hours into the day. Taking a short sleep once or twice a week could lower the risk of heart attacks, according to a 2019 study published in the journal Heart. After tracking more than 3,400 people between the ages of 35 and 75 for slightly more than five years, the researchers found that those who enjoyed occasional short sleep — once or twice a week, for five minutes to an hour — were 48% less likely than those who didn't take a short sleep to experience a heart attack or heart failure.

A lack of quality sleep could lead to overeating because not enough sleep is believed to stimulate hunger and stop hormone (荷尔蒙) signals that communicate fullness. The findings were important because women were at high risk of fatness and sleep disorders, the researchers said, which could both be driven by a high intake of food. Taking a short sleep has been found to improve your creativity. The right side of your brain might experience a strong mental feeling during a short sleep, research suggested. The right side is the hemisphere (半球体) most associated with creative tasks, such as imagination and thinking, while the left is more logical. Researchers monitoring the brain activity of 15 people found that the right side of their brain communicated busily with itself as well as with its left part. The left side of the brain, however, remained relatively quiet. In a January 2020 study of 2,214 Chinese adults aged 60 and older, those who took afternoon sleep for five minutes to two hours showed better mental response than those who didn’t take a short sleep.

    32. What do we know about the study on astronauts?

    A. Taking a short sleep surely results in errors.

    B. Improving working memory ability needs a long sleep.

    C. Sleeping up to one and a half hour is needed during the day.

    D. Having a good working memory may complete the task better.

    33. What can we infer about taking a short sleep from paragraph 2?

    A. It may make you think clearly all day.

    B. It could reduce the risk of heart attacks.

    C. It made 48% of people free from a heart attack.

    D. It may cause over 3,400 persons to suffer from heart attack.

    34. What does the underlined word “stimulate” in paragraph 3 mean?

    A. Refer to. B. Focus on. C. Give up. D. Result in.

    35. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?

    A. Sports. B. Education. C. Health. D. Technology.
