When I was 13, I lost my sight. Since then, I had learned to get about with a walking stick, but had to stay at home because my parents thought I would get lost or robbed, even get hit by a car.
I, however, believed I could regain my way if I lost it. A neighbor told me that a public library was offering a free course designed for the blind. That’s an important opportunity for me to kill two birds with one stone: I could practice my getting — about skills on my way to learning practical technology. My parents settled for it.
But how would I plan my course? I knew that the blind singer Ray Charles, get around without a walking stick by counting steps. But I couldn’t seem to do that the way he had. I developed the power of my imagination, catching the layout (布局) of places I visited and taking note of landmarks in my mind. Every time I visited a place, the mental map I’d drawn would turn up and helped me with the direction. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t lose my way in the process of acquiring this skill. I’d have to swallow (吞下) my pride to ask kind strangers for help.
On those days I lost my way, I’d go to bed feeling down. But my desires to beat blindness and further my education were usually enough to get me out of bed the next day and try again. Today, I’m a published reporter and audio producer.
Yes, I’ve lost my way at times…… and found it again. And when people ask me, “Aren’t you afraid to be out on your own?” the answer to me is clear: I’d rather risk and find happiness than stick to safety and be painful.
Now, impressed by my progress, my father told my mother, “Our boy can see!”.

Experts have long debated the best diet for health. They believe that it’s not just what we eat that’s important for good health but when we eat. When our diet pattern matches the biological clock well, our body can work at its best. Breaking the rule — by eating late meals or having night snacks — could lead to weight gain and metabolic (新陈代谢) trouble.
Many people, however, eat from roughly the time when they wake up until shortly before they go to bed. Studies show that the average person starts with something like milk and coffee shortly after rising and ends with a glass of wine, a late-night meal or a handful of chips, nuts or some other snacks shortly before bed. That pattern of eating is against our biological rule.
Scientists have long known that the human body has a master clock in the brain, which controls our sleep-wake cycles in response to bright light exposure (暴露). A couple of decades ago, researchers discovered that there is not just one clock in the body but a collection of them. Every organ has a clock that controls its daily cycle of activities. Studies show that in every organ, thousands of genes (基因) are turned on and turned off at roughly the same time every day.
We’ve lived on this planet for thousands of years, and while many things have changed, there has always been one unchanged: Every single day the sun rises and at night it falls. We’re designed to have 24-hour patterns in our body. These patterns exist because, just like our brains need to go to sleep each night to repair and reset themselves, every organ needs to have time to repair and reset itself as well.
28. What should we do according to paragraph 1?
A. Don’t eat too much. B. Try to lose weight.
C. Have a low-fat and low-sugar diet. D. Have early meals for the night.
29. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A. Eating Behaviors against the biological clock. B. People’s preference for a balanced diet.
C. Lifestyle of an ordinary busy person. D. People’s healthy eating habits.
30. What do we know about the clocks in our body?
A. They are in our brains. B. They control activities of each organ.
C. They are influenced by what we eat. D. One clock control the other clocks.
31. What is the best title of the text?
A. Select the Best Diet Habit B. Reset the Clocks in Your Body
C. Obey the Biological Clock Rules D. Be Careful of Your Eating

What will power your house in the future? Nuclear wind or solar power? According to scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US, it might be artificial leaves.
Natural leaves are able to change sunlight and water into energy. It is known as photosynthesis (光合作用). Now researchers have found a way to imitate this process.
The artificial leaf developed by Daniel Nocera and his colleagues at MIT can be seen as a special silicon chip with catalysts (催化剂). Similar to natural leaves, it can split water into hydrogen and oxygen when put into a bucket of water. The hydrogen and oxygen gases are then stored in a fuel cell (电池), using those two materials to produce electricity, located either on top of a house or beside the house.
Though the leaf is only about the shape of a poker card, scientists claimed that it is promising to be an inexpensive source of electricity in developing countries. “One can imagine villages in India and Africa not long from now purchasing an affordable basic power system based on this technology,” said an American scientist, Nocera.
An artificial leaf is not a new idea. The first artificial leaf was invented in 1997 but was too expensive and unstable for practical use. The new leaf, however, is made of cheap materials, easy to use and highly stable. In laboratory studies, Nocera showed that an artificial leaf could operate continuously for at least 45 hours.
The wonderful improvements come from Nocera’s recent discovery of several powerful new, inexpensive catalysts. These catalysts make the energy transformation inside the leaf more efficient with water and sunlight. Right now the new leaf is about 10 times more effective at carrying out photosynthesis than a natural one. Besides, the device can run in whatever water is available. This is important for some countries that don’t have access to pure water.
Hopefully, each home could have access to the new application in the future.
32. The purpose of this article is to ___________.
A. introduce a new kind of device B. ask people to do the research
C. advertise the new product D. show the process of photosynthesis
33. Which of the following is NOT the advantages of the new leaf?
A. It’s low in cost. B. It’s small in size.
C. It has a wonderful fuel cell. D. It’s convenient for people to use.
34. What conclusion can be drawn from the text?
A. Nocera thought the new leaf is expensive for developing countries.
B. Villages in Africa have benefited a lot from the new invention.
C. Silicon chip can help the new leaf work more effectively.
D. The equipment doesn’t necessarily operate in pure water.
35. What’s the writer’s attitude towards the new device?
A. Negative. B. Optimistic. C. Doubtful. D. Uncertain.

4. Send your résumé with a gift.
39 Pick out a nice bunch of flowers or lunch and deliver it to the office with your résumé. If you do the pizza, here is a tip — put your résumé in a zip lock bag and tape it to the inside of the box.
5. 40
Walk into the office and ask for the hiring manager by name. Just say you need to discuss the current job opening with him. Sound crazy? It works — they will see you as being determined, proactive and outgoing.

Dear Jack,
I'm glad to know that you are interested in Chinese great scientists. I'll introduce to you my favorite scientist, Tu Youyou.
Tu Youyou devoted most of her time to finding the cure for malaria. In 2015,she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering artemisinin, which is the key to the treatment of malaria. So great is her contribution to the world that she has become an idol of many people, including me. Behind her success were numerous failures and setbacks, but never did she give up. Inspired by her story, I decided to study harder so as to realize my dream.
I hope her story can also have a positive effect on you.
Yours,

M: There are different kinds of New Balance shoes, though. You don’t have to buy the most expensive.
W: I want the best. My sister said that good shoes are very important.
M: Yes, that’s it.
W: I wonder if they have my size.
M: Well, we can wait for the assistant to help us, or we can look through the boxes down here. What is your size?
W: Here in America, it’s six.
M: Well, here you are. Size six. Women’s. 137 dollars. Wow, what a waste of money!
W: It’s none of your business. Let me try them on.

W: Running a few kilometres each day is good for our health. However, new research says running too much could be bad for us. Running long distances regularly for many years could make our life shorter, not longer. The study is from the Minneapolis Heart Institute. A researcher said too much running could lead to heart disease. He wrote that running too much for many years takes away the good things from exercise. He added that the risk of heart disease could be the same as someone who never exercises. Researchers looked at the health and training of 3,300 runners over the age of 35. Seventy per cent of them ran over 30 kilometres a week. Men who ran marathons for 25 years had 62% more chances of developing heart disease than men who did little or no exercise. Another doctor said he felt cheated. He started running marathons and doing triathlons in 1967. He used to run 60 kilometres every week. He said: “I thought I was out there exhausting myself, building an absolutely indestructible heart.” The doctor advised people to exercise regularly but not to overdo things.
