How intelligent can a computer be? May be you can get the answer after reading the following passage about a newly-developed US computer program called Smarter Child and the Internet.
If you ran into Smarter Child online, you would be surprised at this kid’s huge memory. It can recite many facts. For example, Smarter Child knows every baseball player in every team this season.
He knows every word in the dictionary and the weather in every major city areas across the US. However, if you ask Smarter Child other questions, you get strange answers. A question about Smarter Child’s age returns, “One year, 11 days, 16 hours, 7 minutes, and 47 seconds!” Asking where he lives, “In a clean room in a high-tech building in California.”
Smarter Child uses the huge information on the World Wide Web as his memory bank. To answer questions about spelling, for instance, Smarter Child goes to American Heritage Dictionary online. For the weather, he visits www.intellicast.com.
Some scientists believe that by joining the many systems of the Internet, an artificial being with the combined knowledge of, say, Albert Einstein, Richard Nixon and Britney Spears could be born. However, if Smarter Child wants to think and learn on his own like the boy-computer David in the movie A.I. Artificial Intelligence, he must solve two problems.
The first is that computers find it difficult to read web pages because the files are sorted in different ways. That’s why programmers need to tell Smarter Child where to look for the weather. It would be a much more difficult task to let him find it himself.
Another problem is that while Smarter Child can deal with information more exactly and faster than any human, he lacks(缺少) common sense—a basic grounding of knowledge that is obvious(明显的) to any young child.
24、Which of the following cannot be done by Smart Child?
    A.Spelling words. B.Recording facts.
C.Knowing players’ names. D.Answering personal questions.
25、What do we know about www.intellicast.com?
A.It is designed to help Smarter Child. B.It is about artificial intelligence.
C.It helps people find Smarter Child. D.It can forecast the weather.
26、Which of the following is the most difficult for Smart Child?
A.Distinguishing right behaviors from wrong ones.
B.Telling how the American government is run.
C.Providing a famous poem by Shakespeare.
    D.Dealing with information accurately.
27、What’s the best title of the text?
A.Where is artificial intelligence leading us?
B.Can Smart Child have critical thinking?
C.How intelligent can Smart Child be?
D.Does Smart Child have combined knowledge?
Seagrass meadows(海草床) are wonder plants growing beneath the sea. They feed and shelter sea life and are masterful at storing carbon. Thanks to the assistance of tiger sharks, a huge seagrass meadow in the Bahamas Banks was recently discovered, offering the world a tool to fight climate change.
Seagrass has usually been detected by Earth-orbiting satellites that identify darker patches in the blue water. In this study, tiger sharks were selected as research tools due to their highly consistent associations with seagrass ecosystems. They spend 70% of their time in seagrass meadows. The team equipped eight tiger sharks with satellite tags(电子跟踪器), seven sharks with camera tags, and used a 360-degree camera on a shark for the first time ever.
The data researchers collected was astonishing. The world’s largest seagrass ecosystem, measuring at least 66,900 square kilometers, has been discovered. This reflects a 41% increase from previous estimates of global seagrass. Seagrass can capture(捕获) huge quantities of carbon by photosynthesis(光合作用) and stores it on the seafloor. In terms of climate change, this is excellent news; seagrass is 35 times faster a removing carbon than tropical rainforests. When referred to global seagrass carbon stock estimates, the study indicates that seagrass in the Bahamas may contain 19.2% to 26.3% of all the carbon stored in seagrass meadows on Earth.
Yet seagrass meadows are rapidly disappearing, with over 92% of meadows in the UK gone, according to the World Wildlife Fund. Scientists are collecting seeds and trying to grow new seagrass meadows through restoration projects. This new discovery offers optimism and proves the importance of the ocean for healing.
The sharks led us to the seagrass ecosystem in the Bahamas, which we now know is likely the most significant blue carbon sink(蓝色碳汇) on the planet. What this discovery shows us is that ocean exploration and research are essential for a healthy future. The untapped potential of the ocean is limitless. These meadows can be protected and can be replicated (复制,仿制), offering hope for climate change around the globe.
28、Why were tiger sharks chosen as research tools?
A.They are more flexible than other sea animals.
B.They can quickly adjust themselves to the deep sea.
C.They have a strong connection with seagrass ecosystems.
D.They can be easily equipped with experimental devices.
29、What are the numbers in paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.The decline of global seagrass meadows.
B.The impact of climate change on sea life.
C.The rapid increase in the amount of carbon on Earth.
D.The potential value of the world’s largest seagrass ecosystem.
30、What are scientists doing to protect seagrass?
    A.Planting more seagrass meadows.
B.Developing new technology to collect seeds.
C.Mapping the distribution of seagrass meadows.
D.Encouraging people to join in restoration projects.
31、Which could be the best title for the text?
A.The New Way of Removing Carbon
    B.The Significance of Ocean Exploration
C.A New Discovery: World’s Largest Seagrass Meadow
D.Tiger Sharks: Scientists’ Essential Helper to Study Climate
In the coming era of budget(预算) cuts to education, distance learning could become a common thing.
The appeal to those in charge of education budgets to trade teachers for technology is so strong that they tend to ignore the disadvantages of distance learning. School facilities are expensive to build and maintain, and teachers are expensive to employ. It’s true that online classes do not require buildings and each class can host hundreds of people, which can result in greater savings, but moving away from a traditional classroom in which a living, breathing human being teaches and interacts with students daily would be a disaster.
Physically attending school has hidden benefits: getting up every morning interacting with peers, and building relationships with teachers are important skills to cultivate(培养) in young people. Moreover, schools are more than simple places of traditional learning. They are also places that provide meals, places where students receive mental help and other support.
Those policy-makers are often fascinated by the latest technology in education and its potential to transform education overnight. But online education does not allow a teacher to keep a struggling student after class and offer help. Educational videos may deliver academic content, but they are unable to make eye contact or assess a student’s level of engagement. Distance education will never match the personal teaching in a traditional classroom. In their first 18 years of life, American children spend only 9% of their time in school. Yet teachers are expected to prepare them to be responsible citizens, cultivate their social skills, encourage successful time management, and enhance their capacity to compete in a competitive job market. Given these expectations, schools should not become permanently “remote”.
The power of the classroom is rooted in the qualities of the people gathered in the same place, at the same time, including their nature, empathy, devotion and so on. Technology, no matter how advanced, should simply be a tool of a good teacher.
32、What is one possible benefit of students attending school physically?
A.Forming the habit of getting up early.
    B.Eating nutritionally well-balanced meals.
C.Growing into living and breathing human beings.
D.Developing relationships with peers and teachers.
33、What does the author think of the latest technology in education?
    A.It may reduce face-to-face interaction.
B.It may make many teachers jobless.
C.It may add to student’s financial burden.
    D.It may revolutionize classroom teaching.
34、What does the author say teachers are expected to do?
    A.To enhance student’s leadership capacity.
B.To teach students skills in applying for jobs.
C.To enable students to adapt to the changes in life.
D.To prepare students to be competitive in the future.
    35、Why couldn’t technology replace a good teacher?
A.It lacks humanity. B.It can’t meet personal needs.
C.It is still not advanced. D.It can’t track students’ growth.
    三、七选五
36、 As the concept of emotional intelligence (EI) has gone global, we’ve watched professionals fail as they try to improve their emotional intelligence because they either don’t know where to focus their efforts or they haven’t understood how to improve these skills on a practical level. In our work consulting with companies and coaching leaders, we have found that if you’re looking to develop particular EI strengths, it helps to consider areas for improvement others have identified along with the goals you want to achieve, and then to actively build habits in those areas rather than simply relying on understanding them conceptually.
The first step is to get a sense of how your self-perception (how you see yourself) differs from your reputation (how others see you); ①_____. For example, most of us think that we’re good listeners, but very often that’s really not the case. Without this external reality check, it will be difficult for you to identify the ways that your actions affect your performance. Getting feedback from others can also provide proof of the necessity of shifting our behaviour and motivation to do so.
To give you the best sense of where the differences lie between your self-perception and reputation, you should use a 360-degree feedback assessment that takes into account the multiple facets of EI; ②_____. Secondly, when you get your feedback from an assessment, let that inform what you want to improve. But also consider what your goals are. When it comes to cultivating strengths in emotional intelligence, ③_____. Your emotional intelligence is so tied up in your sense of self that being intrinsically motivated to make the effort matters more when changing long-standing habits than it does when simply learning a skill.
That means the areas that you choose to actively work on should lie at the crossroads of the feedback you’ve gotten and the areas that are most important to your own aspirations; ④_____ as you do the work of strengthening your emotional intelligence.
Once you’ve determined which EI skills you want to focus on, identify specific actions that you’ll take. If you’re working on becoming a better listener, for example, you might decide that when you’re conversing with someone you’ll take the time to pause, listen to what they have to say, and check that you understand before you reply. Keep it specific: ⑤_____.
By starting to change your routine reactions, you’ll be well on your way to figuring out the old habits that aren’t serving you well and transforming them into new, improved ones that do.
A.you’re at a huge disadvantage if you’re only interested because others said you should be
B.bearing your goals in mind is so helpful to improve the positive impact of your current EI habits
C.you should also take every opportunity to practice the skill you are developing, no matter how small
D.understanding the impacts of your EI habits relative to your goals will keep you going over the long run
E.the key is to find one that guarantees no personal information of those giving you feedback will be leaked
F.how others see you will to some extent decide how you see others and help you become a good listener
G.this is true because we can be blind to how we express and read the emotional components of our interactions

    54、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Last week, I watched an old couple when they walked through a local thrift (节俭) store. I had just dropped off a bag of clothes and a few other items I no longer wanted. When I got the opportunity, I stopped by just to look through the old records. Yes, I called them records, not CDs or MP3s, simply records, those round plastic things from ancient times that had music recorded on them.
Anyway, this couple moved slowly around me in search of items they had on a list they held tight in hand. They didn’t say much, but occasionally talked with the other and picked an item up. “No, it’s not suitable for her and she dislikes it,’’ one would say and move on.
My curiosity always got the best of me until I satisfied it by asking. “Can I help you find something?” I asked. They stopped, looking at me. Then the man said, “We are looking for old things that look new. Look, every new year in the past we tried to begin the year with new things. It was a goal to surround ourselves with things fresh and new so that we had new direction, new hopes and dreams for the year ahead. More importantly, we can give some gifts to Eva.”
“Eva? Who is she?” I asked. “She is a lovely 10-year-old girl we adopted three years ago. Her parents died in a serious traffic accident. She always wants to be a singer,” the man replied. When hearing those words, I felt sad and said, “I’m sorry for the girl. Can you tell me how does your search work out?” The lady sighed and said, “It took a long time for us to find a special gift, but we discovered it was in vain (徒劳的).”
I knew it’s difficult for the couple to solve the problem, so I decided to take action immediately. I said to the couplet can do you a favor. Please wait here for me.
    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I turned around and ran out of the store.

    4、答案:A

M: I found it! It was in my bag.
W: You look nice today. Why are you wearing that red tie? Another wedding?
M: No. An important guest is coming to our company. We’ll have a business meeting and sign an agreement. It’s a big day for me.

W: Kevin, you don’t know the harm the plastic does to the ocean. Plastic can pollute the ocean and, in turn, harm fish and other ocean life. We should care about what happens to the ocean. Didn’t you hear about that dead whale’s stomach that was full of plastic garbage?
M: Oh, yes. I heard about that. But what will we do with the plastic garbage we collect?

W: Actually I drive to work. I don’t read on my way to work.
M: When do you usually read? At work?
W: No. I usually read when I’m waiting to act in front of the camera.
    W: Are you an actress?
M: Yes. There’s a lot of waiting during film acting. You’ll spend about 10% of your time on the job acting; the rest of the time waiting for the camera and lights to be set up or changed.
M: Now I see why you often take a book with you. So do you love your job?
    W: Yes.
M: Could you tell me why?
W: Well, many people think actors can make a lot of money and enjoy great fame. But they’re not the reason why I love my job. I love it just because of my big interest.

解析:Pete and Ruth’s Shop is one of the most popular supermarkets in the city today. Pete Johnson and Ruth Kelly went to college together. They first opened a little shop in 1989. They mainly sold drinks and snacks to college students. As the number of customers grew, Pete and Ruth decided to add more things on their store shelves. 54、答案:
I turned around and ran out of the store. I knew I should go home to find something to help the couple. Then, I took a taxi. On the way home, I was thinking what I could give the girl as a gift. For me, the only hobby was music. So I thought I could give something about music as a gift, maybe a record. After arriving home, I found an old record which was given by my grandparents when I was ten years old. I believed Eva would love it.
When I returned to the store, the couple sat near the counter(柜台). Seeing me, they waved to me. I ran to them with the record in my hand. The man was surprised and asked me where I had gone. I gave them the record and told them, “This is a gift from my grandparents, and now it belongs to Eva.” The couple felt happy and showed their appreciation to me. Although the record meant a lot to me, I knew it would light up the girl’s sky. I felt proud of what I had done.
