What will you do if you come across an English word or phrase you don't know? You'd probably look it up in the dictionary, wouldn't you? This, however, was not the case 500 years ago.Although English has a history of 2,500 years, the first English dictionary didn't appear until the 17th century.
During the 16th century,Europe saw rich development in science, medicine and the arts.People had to "invent" words to express new ideas. Many new English words were borrowed from foreign languages. There was also a renewed interest in ancient languages. So some new English words came from languages like Latin(拉丁语) and Hebrew(古希伯来语).
The general public, however, had difficulty understanding these new words. At that time, few girls would go to school.Only rich parents were able to afford professional teachers.Robert Cawdrey,an English school teacher, wanted to help.In 1604,he published A Table Alphabeticall in London.Cawdrey hoped his dictionary would be able to help more people learn to read and write "properly".
But Cawdrey's dictionary was not very reliable. The first edition(版本)had only 120 pages. There were only 2,543 words in it.As Cawdrey's focus was on words "hard for the general public,"many common words were not included. And for many words, the explanations were not exact.Take "oats" as an example. The definition read, "Something that is generally given to horses in England but in Scotland supports to people." For more words,Cawdrey used only one word to explain each of them. This made A Table Alphabeticall more like a book of synonyms(同义词)than a real dictionary. While readers could check the spelling of some words using the book, they had no way of finding out what these words actually meant.
Although Cawdrey's dictionary had many problems,it was quite popular. As the saying goes, "Half a loaf is better than no bread." In the year of 1604,people finally had something to help them read more easily.
27. When could people use the English dictionary? ______
A. 500 years ago. B. 2,500 years ago.
C. During the 16th century. D. In the 17th century.
28. What CANNOT we know from paragraphs 2 and 3? ______

C. Fast development led to the invention of new words.
D. English had a great development in the 16th century.
29. According to the text, what do we know about A Table Alphabeticall ? ______
A. It was sold out as the first edition came out.
B. It explained words exactly like a real dictionary.
C. The 2,543 words were mainly new and hard words.
D. It only helped poor girls to read and write easily.
30. Which of the following can best describe the saying "Half a loaf is better than no bread"? ______
A. 聊胜于无 B. 巧妇难为无米之炊
C. 寸金难买光阴 D. 好的开始是成功的一半

In a class this past December, after I wrote some notes on the blackboard for students, one girl quickly took a picture of the board using her smart phone. When I looked in her direction, she said sorry and explained,"I can't read my own handwriting written too fast.So it's best if I take a picture of your writing, then I can understand the notes."
That started a class-wide discussion about taking a picture instead of taking notes. For those in the photo-taking camp, motivations(动机) were not only about their difficulty in understanding their own handwriting. Some took pictures of notes because they knew their phone was a safe place to store material. They might lose paper, they reasoned, but they wouldn't lose their phones. Some took photos because they wanted to record exactly the way in which I had noted information on the board.Others told me that during class they liked to be able to listen to me carefully instead of spending time taking notes.
Though it may be convenient to use cameras as note takers,it does bring big questions for the classroom. Is a picture an effective(有效的) replacement for the process of note-taking?Professors encourage students to take notes because the act of doing so is more than simply recording necessary information—it helps prepare the way for understanding.Encouraging students to take notes may be an old-fashioned method, but a method with a long history doesn't mean it's out of date.Writing things down makes a student's brain join in listening, looking, and kinesthetic(触觉的) learning. The act of writing down information enables a person to begin keeping it to memory, and to process it,building the blocks of learning new concepts(概念).
Taking a picture does record the information, but it cuts down some of the necessary mental connection that taking notes has.So can the two be the same effective?
I'm not sure how to measure the effectiveness of either method. For now,I allow students to take notes however they see fit—handwritten or photographed—because I figure that some notes,no matter the method of note-taking,are better than none.
32. What led to the discussion? ______
A. The girl took a picture of the board.
B. The teacher looked in wrong direction.
C. The girl had very bad handwriting.
D. The teacher's notes were too difficult.
33. According to paragraph 2,which is NOT a reason why students refuse to take notes? ______
A. They don't want to practice handwriting.
B. They might lose the paper with the notes.
C. They want to record the teacher's noting way.
D. They prefer to focus on teachers' instructions
34. What can we learn about taking hands by hand according to the paragraph 3? ______
A. It is simply to record necessary information.
B. It is less helpful for students to accept new ideas.
C. It helps students' brains actively join in learning.
D. It has been an old and useless learning method.
35. What's the writer's opinion toward taking notes by phones? ______
A. He prefers handwritten notes. B. He prefers taking pictures.
C. He thinks neither is helpful. D. He thinks both are OK.

A. A college magazine. B. An after-school program ad.

(3)推理判断题。根据第4段"There were only 2,543 words in it.As Cawdrey's focus was on words 'hard for the general public,' many common words were not included."(第一版只有120页。总共只有2543个单词。由于Cawdrey的重点是"对普通大众来说很难"的词,许多常用词没有被包括在内。)可知这个"词典"里收录的2543个单词对普通大众来说比较难而且许多常用词没有被包括在内(以新词为主),故选C。
(4)词义猜测题。根据上文"Although Cawdrey's dictionary had many problems,it was quite popular. "(虽然Cawdrey的字典有很多问题,但它还是很受欢迎。)可知尽管Cawdrey的词典有诸多问题,但它还是很受欢迎,要表达的就是"有总比没有好";而且"Half a loaf is better than no bread.",中文就直译为"半条面包总比没有面包好。"故选A。

(4)细节理解题。根据第5段"I'm not sure how to measure the effectiveness of either method."(我不确定如何衡量这两种方法的有效性。)

In my opinion, there are three types of jobs that are likely to be replaced by AI in the near future:manual labor, repetitive tasks, and data analysis.【高分句型一】Firstly, jobs that involve manual labor such as factory workers, construction workers, and farmers are likely to be replaced by machines. These machines can perform dangerous tasks with greater accuracy and efficiency than humans.Secondly, jobs that involve repetitive tasks such as data entry, customer service, and administration are also at risk.AI systems can automate these tasks, allowing companies to save time and money and reduce human errors.Lastly, jobs that involve data analysis, such as financial analysts and insurance underwriters, may also be impacted by AI.(我认为会被取代的三种职业:体力劳动、重复性任务和数据分析。)
As a middle school student,I think it's important to prepare for the impact of AI on the job market.【高分句型二】One way is to develop skills that are less likely to be replaced by AI,such as critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving.Another way is to focus on careers that require human interaction, such as healthcare, education, and social services.(中学生应该为此做哪些准备:一种方法是培养不太可能被人工智能取代的技能,比如批判性思维、创造力和解决问题的能力。另一种方法是专注于需要人际互动的职业,如医疗保健、教育和社会服务。)
