Harry and Annie lived a mile from town, but they walked there to school every day. It was a pleasant walk around the pond(池塘) on their way to school. In winter, when the ice was thick and strong, they went across the pond. But their mother did not like them to do this unless someone was with them.
“Don’t go across the pond today, children,” she said, as she said goodbye to them one morning. “It is beginning to thaw(解冻).”
“All right, mother,” said Harry, not very happy, for he was very interested in running and sliding(滑动) on the ice.
When they came to the pond, the ice looked hard and safe.
“There,” Harry said to his sister, “Let’s slide over it.”
“But you promised mother,” said Annie.
“No, I didn’t. I only said ‘All right’, and it is all right.”
“I didn’t say anything, so I can do as I like,” said Annie.
So they stepped on the ice and started to go across the pond. They had not gone far before the ice gave way, and suddenly they fell into the water.
A man who was at work near the pond heard the screams(喊声) of the children and rushed into the water to save them. Harry managed to get out without any help, but poor Annie was nearly drowned(溺水) before the man could reach her.

It was a night over 80 years ago, when an army quietly passed across the Yudu River in Ganzhou, Jiangxi. They wanted to break the enemy’s siege(敌人的包围). They were the Chinese Central Red Army, who decided to start a long, hard walk. It would become known as the Long March.
During the Long March, the Central Red Army passed many places. They started from Jiangxi, passing through Fujian, Guangdong, Hunan, Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan, Gansu and arriving in Shaanxi.
You may have learned in books that soldiers went through many difficulties. They had to fight against both the enemies and the difficult environment. In Sichuan, soldiers crept across Luding Chain Bridge, which is made up of 13 iron chains(铁链), in the middle of gun fire. They also climbed over the snowy Jianjin Mountain, which is 4,930m high. They didn’t have enough food to eat or enough clothes to stay away from the cold. They often went hungry for days. Many soldiers died. Take the Central Red Army for example. About 86,000 people took part in the march but only 7,000 were left when they arrived in Shaanxi.
In all, the Chinese Red Army walked more than 25,000 li (12,500 kilometers) during the Long March.

Have you ever planted any flowers? What kind did you plant?
There was once a company in the United States that said that it would offer a large amount of money to anyone who could find a white marigold (金盏花). Most marigolds are either golden or brown. It is very hard to find a white one.
Twenty years later, the company received a letter from an old woman. She sent 100 white marigold seeds (种子) along with the letter.
The woman was a fan of flowers. Her father was a florist (花农) and she learned many skills from him. When she first heard the company’s offer 20 years ago, she got very excited. She thought she could grow her own white marigolds. But her children doubted her. She didn’t know anything about seed genetics (遗传学) after all. So her dream of growing white marigolds was just that—a dream.
Still, she didn’t give up and worked to make it happen. She planted some common marigold seeds and took good care of them. A year later, when the marigolds came out, she chose one of the smallest flowers and took its seeds. She planted these seeds and waited another year for them to come out.
Day after day, year after year, through many seasons, her life changed. Her husband died, her children moved away, and many other things happened. But her wishes to grow white marigolds remained strong in her heart.
Finally, after 20 years, she went out to her garden and found a marigold that was not just white—it was as white as the purest snow.
34.How many colours do marigolds probably have?
A.Four. B.Three. C.Two. D.One.
35.Why did the woman’s children doubt that she could grow white marigolds?
A.Because she never grew flowers.
B.Because she was a fan of flowers.
C.Because she only liked dreaming of something.
D.Because she knew nothing about seed genetics.
36.Which is the correct order of the events according to the text?
a. She went out to her garden and found a marigold.

Dear Martin,
Thank you for telling me about some of the problems at the zoo. We have decided to take action to make the zoo better.
For your information, we have moved the lion into a larger cage. It is important for the lion to have more space to move. We have looked at the tiger’s cage, and there is no problem. Tigers always sleep in the afternoon in summer. People feeding the fish is a big problem. We have put up a notice near the aquarium. It says, “Don’t feed the fish!”
Finally, we will put three new rubbish bins near the restaurant.
We are not perfect, but we try very hard to make the zoo a nice place both for animals to live in and for people to visit.
Yours,
Li Hua
