As a child, I was proud of my southern origin. My own voice reflected my family’s past and present-part northern Mississippi, part Tennessee, all southern. There was no sound I loved more than my grandmother’s accent: thick, sweet, warm.
While growing up, I began to realize outside of our region, southerners were often dismissed as uncultured and ignorant. I was ready to leave behind my tiny town in West Tennessee, starting a new life and jumping at big chances in some far-off cities. In that embarrassing space between “teen” and “adult”, my accent was a symbol of everything I thought I hated about my life in the rural South. I feared it would disqualify me from being a noted magazine writer. I would have to talk less “country”. So I killed a piece of myself. I’m ashamed of it, but I’m more ashamed that I tried to kill that part of someone else-change Emily’s accent.
I met Emily in college. She was determined to work for the student newspaper, which was where I spent most of my waking hours, and we became friends. She, unlike me, accepted her roots. Early in our friendship, her mother asked where I was from, assuming it was somewhere up north. Then I felt my efforts paid off and even wanted to ignore the mistake.
Emily is two years younger and she cared about my opinion. I advised her to be more like me and hide her signature Manchester accent. I stressed that throughout our college years, often by making fun of her vowel(元音)sounds. I told myself I was helping her achieve her dream of working as a reporter. Now, I see that it was actually about justifying my hiding part of myself.
Grandma Carolyn used to tell me, “Girl, don’t forget where you come from.” Now I truly understand that. Many things have faded from memory, but this sticks in my mind with uncomfortable clarity. Now that I am grown and have left the South, it’s important to me.
24.What made the author want to leave her hometown?
A. Appeal of convenience in cities. B. Her dream of becoming a writer.
C. Outside prejudice against southerners. D. Her desire for the northern accent.
25.How did the author feel about the mistake of Emily’s mother?
A. Upset. B. Pleased. C. Ashamed. D. Surprised.
26.Why on earth did the author try to change Emily’s accent?
A. To prove herself right. B. To help Emily be a reporter.
C. To make herself influential. D. To protect Emily’s self-dignity.
27.What message does the text want to convey?
A. Stay true to your roots. B. Never do things by halves.
C. Hold on to your dreams. D. Never judge a person by his accent.
C
The two terms nature and nurture have been subjects of comparison since the 16th century. The argument is centered on the question as to whether it is nature or nurture that makes us who we are.
Nature provides the starting point for an organism that will interact with nurture, the environment, during the organism’s life. Nature does not just affect an organism during its lifetime, but it also can directly affect the expression of genes in offspring(后代). For the Geneticists, they believe that our lives are entirely determined by genetics, which is nature. An opposing view is that there is no indication that genes(基因)determines one’s personality, rather there is growing evidence that nurture serves as the determining factor in personality development.
Nurture refers to the conditions under which living things grow and develop after birth. When applied to human beings, it means how the person is raised, which includes nutrition, education, care, as well as the kind of surroundings, such as cultural influence, family and friends.
The argument of nature and nurture as to which is more important is necessitated by an attempt to differentiate how much effect genetics has on a person’s development against how easily humans are influenced by one’s environment.
While nurture undeniably plays its part on the growth and development of one’s personality, nature dramatically outweighs nurture, for nature can be likened to a foundation. The impact of nurture on the development of persons cannot be totally denied. However, nature is regarded as being of most importance because of the fact that it affords an opportunity and creates a foundation and the basis for the question of nurture to arise at the very first instance. Even without nurture, the nature impact can still stand independently without necessarily causing destruction. More so, even when the nurture impact is successfully effected, it does not remove the genetic characteristics of a person. It therefore stands correctly that nature is that which determines the substance of a person.
28.What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A. Nature’s role is supported by additional evidence.
B. Personality development is determined by nurture.
C. Nature impacts gene expression in later generation.
D. Environment shapes personality more than genetics.
29.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. What nurture means to human beings. B. How living things develop after birth.
C. How nurture shapes human development. D. How surroundings influence human beings.
30.How does the author stress the greater importance of nature?
A. By giving examples. B. By making contrast.
C. By conducting experiments. D. By citing research data.
31.What is the best title for the text?
A. A Long Story of Nature and Nurture B. A New Research on Nature and Nurture
C. Who Can Tell What Makes Who We Are? D. Which Is More Important, Nature or Nurture?
D
A video circulated on social media earlier this year, showing a tourist opening the door of a vehicle, reaching out an arm and attempting to stroke a passing lioness. The lioness shrugged him off, but it could have easily gone horribly wrong.
Reckless behaviour around wildlife risks the safety of both people and animals. People risk being attacked, mauled(撕咬)and possibly killed, while animals can be harmed, removed or put down, irrespective of whether they were only defending themselves. Animal attacks can also cast a destination in a negative light, causing temporary closures or scaring off visitors. All just so someone could boast that they had stroked a lion or captured a moment on a camera phone.
“Tourists are getting more and more reckless around wildlife and the source of the problem is social media.” says wildlife photographer Anette Mosshachers. “People risking their lives or doing stupid things with wildlife are after ‘likes’ and followers, something to show off on social media,” says Mossbacher. “The greater the risk, the more ‘likes’ they get. With some clients, it seems like a sickness or addiction.”
Yet social media is not entirely to blame. People have always taken risks for an experience. Foolish behavior and a tendency to get cocky around dangerous animals must have been around since the dawn of humanity. A hunger for attention online might drive some of the current madness, but some individuals might be trying to recreate a piece of the action they have seen on television. Perhaps the adrenaline(肾上腺激素)rush when close to wild animals causes an evaporation of common sense.
“There’s a worrying lack of awareness that animals several times our size, weight, speed and strength can easily hurt us,”says wildlife photographer David Lloyd. “I don’t think parks are doing enough to raise awareness. Tourists need to know how their presence can affect wildlife. A good example is cheetahs(猎豹)on vehicle rooftops. It may be a thrill for the bystanders, but the consequences if a mother cheetah falls off would be severe. She would no longer be able to hunt, so her cubs could easily starve.”
“People aren’t getting the education about why they need to stay away from wildlife, including avoiding diseases, keeping people secure and letting wildlife be wild,” says Philip Muruthi, vice president of species conservation and science for the African Wildlife Foundation. “We need to educate tourists through signs, pamphlets and frontline drivers. We should stick to guidelines, and there needs to be enforcement through the law.”
32.What can we learn about reckless behaviour around wildlife?
A. It harms tourists more than animals.
B. It enables tourists to get intimate with animals.
C. It may bring more profits to a tourist destination.
D. It may get animals killed for defending themselves.
33.As for Mossbacher’s opinion on what drives people’s reckless behavior, the author is _______.
A. sympathetic B. disapproving C. doubtful D. indifferent
34.What does the underlined word “cocky” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Selfish. B. Frightened. C. Arrogant. D. Shocked.
35.What can we conclude from the passage?
A. Parks are expected to take more responsibilities for educating tourists.
B. Raising tourists’ awareness means stressing the danger of animals to them.
C. More regulation of the tourist industry is the key to raising tourists’ awareness.
D. Penalties rather than education can stop people taking silly risks around wildlife.

I’ve been living in Spain for decades and I securely guarantee that I have a talent in figuring out the cool hidden local spots. As a foreigner, I couldn’t care less about doing the touristy things or enjoying fancy cuisine. ___36___ So I always attempt to find something that’s appealing and fun yet represents the local culture, and that offers an interaction with the locals.
My reputation for doing this has grown. ___37___ Since I am somewhat fluent in Spanish, I could charge people for this and become somewhat of an official tour guide. I choose not to though, because to me, the most important thing is making sure the tourist, who already spent a lot of time and money getting to where I am, has the fun and cultural experience they could possibly have. ___38___ In that case, tourists can explore the local culture further at the lowest cost. They could otherwise spend a significant sum of money on a guided tour that keeps them comfortable but separated from the culture. I choose to give them an experience that’s deeper and opens their mind, all for free.
___39___ When someone is visiting your area, don’t just take them to the touristy spots. Show them the places that mean something to you. Show them your heart through the places that you show them and the experience you give them. There’s something good in almost every town out there. If you don’t have any spots in your area that you like, learn to find the good in the place you live. If you find the good in where you live, you will also find the good in yourself. It’s a time that both you and the tourist will probably never obtain again. ___40___
A. Everyone can do the same.
B. I could hardly have imagined it would happen.
C. It could also help me create a lifelong connection with them.
D. What’s most crucial is experiencing the genuine country and culture.
E. I know better than tourists themselves what they are eager to experience.
F. Don’t rush the experience, thoroughly enjoy every moment with that person.
G. I’m being asked frequently to offer people tours, both to friends and strangers.

My baby Reese started screaming and I struggled to hold him in my arms as we pushed our way through the crowd to the side of the taekwondo(跆拳道)studio, where I would send my boy for the training.
I looked up, and that is when I saw the photo on a poster, a woman with a bright white smile surrounded by her daughters. “OUR MOM NEEDS A KIDNEY(肾脏),” it said above the photo. “My name is Vonchelle Knight, and I have polycystic kidney disease,” it said below. “I am a single mother of two girls and have been on the transplant waitlist for eight years.”
As I continued to read, I thought about how desperately this momma needed a kidney. And then the idea struck me. I wanted to donate my kidney to the woman whom I had never met.
On the drive home, I told my husband I wanted to donate my kidney to a stranger. By the look on his face, he clearly thought I had lost my mind. I was a busy mom of two boys working a full-time job as a sales account manager. I had a calendar filled with sporting events, group fitness and volunteer church hours.
“Where is this coming from?” he asked. I was excited and slightly terrified as I explained the poster. I told him I wanted to at least call Vonchelle’s nurse and get more information.
Several weeks later, the results were in. We were a perfect match! The nervous excitement filled my body. Thoughts swirled in my head as I realized I had the ability to give this momma a new lease on life. Vonchelle had already waited eight years and obviously didn’t have any family members who could donate.
I told my husband that the doctor could do the transplant on January twenty-fifth. His eyes filled with tears as he stared at me and nodded. Vonchelle’s daughter worked at my son’s taekwondo studio, so I shared the news with her.
One day before the donation, the doctors scheduled me to meet Vonchelle.

B
根据第二段的“While growing up, I began to realize outside of our region, southerners were often dismissed as uncultured and ignorant. I was ready to leave behind my tiny town in West Tennessee, starting a new life and jumping at big chances in some far-off cities.(在成长过程中,我开始意识到,在我们的地区之外,南方人经常被认为是没有文化和无知的。我准备离开我在西田纳西州的小镇,开始新的生活,并在一些遥远的城市抓住大好机会)”可知,作者决定离开南部的家乡是因为其他人认为南方人没文化、无知,即外部对南方人的偏见。故选C。
25.推理判断题。根据第三段的“Early in our friendship, her mother asked where I was from, assuming it was somewhere up north. Then I felt my efforts paid off and even wanted to ignore the mistake.(在我们的友谊之初,她妈妈问我来自哪里,以为是北方的某个地方。然后我觉得我的努力得到了回报,甚至想忽略这个错误)”推知,当被Emily的妈妈误会来自北方时,作者是非常开心的。故选B。
26.推理判断题。根据第二段的“I feared it would disqualify me from being a noted magazine writer. I would have to talk less “country”. So I killed a piece of myself.(我担心这会使我失去成为著名杂志作家的资格。我就得少说些“乡村”了。所以我抹杀了自己身份的一部分)”,第三段的“She was determined to work for the student newspaper, which was where I spent most of my waking hours(她决心为校报工作,而我醒着的大部分时间都在那里度过的)”以及倒数第二段的“I advised her to be more like me and hide her signature Manchester accent. I stressed that throughout our college years, often by making fun of her vowel(元音)sounds. I told myself I was helping her achieve her dream of working as a reporter.(我建议她更像我,隐藏她标志性的曼彻斯特口音。在我们的大学生活中,我经常通过取笑她的元音来强调这一点。我告诉自己,我是在帮她实现当记者的梦想)”可知,作者通过改变自己的口音获得了在校报工作的机会。由此推知,作者努力改变Emily的口音是为了证明自己是对的,即改变南方口音就有可能获得好工作。故选A。
通读全文,并结合第二段的“I’m ashamed of it, but I’m more ashamed that I tried to kill that part of someone else-change Emily’s accent.(我很惭愧,但我更惭愧的是我试图抹杀别人的那部分——改变艾米丽的口音)”和最后一段“Grandma Carolyn used to tell me, “Girl, don’t forget where you come from.” Now I truly understand that. Many things have faded from memory, but this sticks in my mind with uncomfortable clarity.(卡罗琳奶奶过去常对我说:“女孩,别忘了你来自哪里。”现在我真的明白了。许多事情已经从记忆中消失了,但这件事却以令人不安的清晰印象留在了我的脑海中)”可知,文章想要传达的信息是:坚守本根。故选A。
根据第二段中的“Nature provides the starting point for an organism that will interact with nurture, the environment, during the organism’s life. Nature does not just affect an organism during its lifetime, but it also can directly affect the expression of genes in offspring(后代).(在有机体的一生中,先天为有机体提供了与滋养、环境相互作用的起点。先天不仅会影响一个生物体的一生,还会直接影响其后代的基因表达)”可知,先天影响后代的基因表达。故选C。
29.主旨大意题。根据第三段“Nurture refers to the conditions under which living things grow and develop after birth. When applied to human beings, it means how the person is raised, which includes nutrition, education, care, as well as the kind of surroundings, such as cultural influence, family and friends.(后天指的是生物出生后生长发育的条件。当应用于人类时,它指的是一个人是如何成长的,包括营养、教育、照顾,以及环境的类型,如文化影响、家庭和朋友)”可知,第三段主要讨论了后天对人类意味着什么。故选A。
根据最后一段中的“While nurture undeniably plays its part on the growth and development of one’s personality, nature dramatically outweighs nurture, for nature can be likened to a foundation. The impact of nurture on the development of persons cannot be totally denied. However, nature is regarded as being of most importance because of the fact that it affords an opportunity and creates a foundation and the basis for the question of nurture to arise at the very first instance.(不可否认,后天培养在一个人的个性成长和发展中起着一定的作用,但先天的作用远远超过后天培养,因为先天可以被比作基础。后天对人的发展的影响是不能完全否认的。然而,先天被认为是最重要的,因为它提供了一个机会,创造了一个基础,为后天问题的出现提供了基础)”可推知,作者通过对比强调了先天的重要性。故选B。
31.主旨大意题。根据第一段“The two terms nature and nurture have been subjects of comparison since the 16th century. The argument is centered on the question as to whether it is nature or nurture that makes us who we are.(先天和后天这两个术语自16世纪以来一直是比较的主题。争论的核心问题是,究竟是先天还是后天造就了我们)”及下文论述可知,文章主要论述了究竟是先天还是后天造就了我们。由此可知,Which Is More Important, Nature or Nurture?(先天和后天,哪个更重要?)
根据第二段中“People risk being attacked, mauled(撕咬)and possibly killed, while animals can be harmed, removed or put down, irrespective of whether they were only defending themselves.(人可能会被攻击、咬伤,甚至可能被杀死,而动物可能会被伤害、移走或杀死,不管它们是否只是在自卫)”可知,人类鲁莽的的行为可能会导致会让动物因为自卫而被杀死。故选D项。
根据第三段中Mossbacher的话“Tourists are getting more and more reckless around wildlife and the source of the problem is social media.(游客面对野生动物时越来越鲁莽,而问题的根源是社交媒体)”可知,Mossbacher认为社交媒体是游客面对野生动物时越来越鲁莽的根本原因,根据第四段中“Yet social media is not entirely to blame. People have always taken risks for an experience.(然而,社交媒体并不完全是罪魁祸首。人们总是为了体验而冒险)”可知,作者认为Mossbacher的表述并不完全准确,作者认为游客的鲁莽行为也可许是从于人类的本性。所以他对Mossbacher的观点持怀疑态度。故选C项。
34.词义猜测题。根据第四段中“People have always taken risks for an experience. Foolish behavior and a tendency to get cocky around dangerous animals must have been around since the dawn of humanity.(人们总是为了体验而冒险。自人类诞生以来,在危险动物面前愚蠢的行为和cocky倾向一定一直存在)”可知,冒险是人类的本性,结合并列词组“Foolish behavior”可知推知,“get cocky”也是一种鲁莽的、不理性的表现,结合选项,cocky与arrogant同义,意为“傲慢的”。故选C项。
35.推理判断题。根据第五段中“I don’t think parks are doing enough to raise awareness. Tourists need to know how their presence can affect wildlife.(我认为公园在提高公众意识方面做得还不够。游客需要知道他们的存在会如何影响野生动物)”和第六段中“People aren’t getting the education about why they need to stay away from wildlife, including avoiding diseases, keeping people secure and letting wildlife be wild(人们没有得到关于为什么他们需要远离野生动物的教育,包括避免疾病,保证人们的安全,让野生动物自然生长)”可推知,公园在提高公众意识方面做得还不够,应该在教育游客方面承担更多的责任。故选A项。
36.根据空后“So I always attempt to find something that’s appealing and fun yet represents the local culture, and that offers an interaction with the locals.(所以我总是试图找到一些既吸引人又有趣的东西,同时又能代表当地文化,并提供与当地人互动的机会)”中的so可知,此空处讲述的内容与空后内容为因果关系,D选项“What’s most crucial is experiencing the genuine country and culture.(最重要的是体验真正的国家和文化)”中的experiencing the genuine country and culture与空后内容相关,都与体验当地文化相关,且与空后内容为因果关系。故选D项。
37.根据空后的“Since I am somewhat fluent in Spanish, I could charge people for this and become somewhat of an official tour guide.(因为我的西班牙语说得比较流利,所以我可以向人们收取费用,这样我就可以成为一名正式导游)”可知,此处讲述的是作者因西班牙语说的很流利而成为正式的导游,G选项“I’m being asked frequently to offer people tours, both to friends and strangers.(我经常被要求提供人们提供旅游,既有朋友也有陌生人)”讲述的内容与作者作导游相关。故选G项。
38.根据空前的“I choose not to though, because to me, the most important thing is making sure the tourist, who already spent a lot of time and money getting to where I am, has the fun and cultural experience they could possibly have.(但我选择不这么做,因为对我来说,最重要的是确保那些已经花了很多时间和金钱来到我所在的地方的游客,能尽可能地享受到乐趣和文化体验)”可知,作者认为最重要的是确保游客体验到该有的乐趣和文化体验,结合空后“In that case, tourists can explore the local culture further at the lowest cost.(在这种情况下,游客们可以以最低的成本进一步研究当地文化)”可知,那样的话,游客就能以最低的价格体验当地文化,由其中的in that case可推断,此空处是使游客能以最低的价格体验当地文化的方式,C选项“It could also help me create a lifelong connection with them.(它还可以帮我与他们创建一个终身关系)”中的them与空前的they指代一致,且与空后的in that case指代内容相关。故先C项。
39.分析语篇可知,此空处为本段的主题,根据空后的“When someone is visiting your area, don’t just take them to the touristy spots. Show them the places that mean something to you. Show them your heart through the places that you show them and the experience you give them.(当有人来你的地区旅游时,不要只带他们去旅游景点。带他们去那些对你有意义的地方。通过你带他们去的地方和你给他们的经历,向他们展示你的心)”可知,本段讲述的是有人去你所在的地区,不要带他们去景点,你可以带他们去你觉得有意义的地方,结合上一段中讲述的作者带他游客去他所在地区体验当地文化可知,该段讲述的与上文作者的做法一样,A选项“Everyone can do the same.(每个人都可以做同样的事情)”概括了本段的内容,且起到了承上启下的作用。故选A项。
40.根据空前的“It’s a time that both you and the tourist will probably never obtain again.(这是一个你和游客可能永远不会再获得的时刻)”可知,此处讲述的是这是与游客很可能永远不会获得的时间,F选项“Don’t rush the experience, thoroughly enjoy every moment with that person.(不要匆忙的体验,彻底享受和那人在一起的每一刻)”中的“enjoy every moment with that person.”

Yours faithfully,
Li Hua
Dear Li Mei,
I’m at a loss as to whether or not to study painting recently, and I’m writing to consult you about some advice and detailed information about it.
Despite the fact that I am just a beginner in painting, I have been powerfully attracted by it as you. However, some teachers think it’s a pity for me to study painting. Besides, I am worried about the difficulty level of studying painting. I have heard that it is a highly competitive field and requires a lot of practice and persistence. Last but not least, I am curious about the cost. Do I need to spend extra money? To be honest, I hate to burden my family by such a choice.
Thank you for taking some time to read my letter, and I’m eager to receive your earliest reply.
Yours faithfully,
Li Hua
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
As she walked through the door of the meeting room, I walked up to her, my heart beating wildly. __________

Paragraph 2:
After the successful transplant, Vonchelle was recovering well. _____________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As she walked through the door of the meeting room, I walked up to her, my heart beating wildly. Her bright white smile was infectious, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of admiration at the woman before me. Here was the person who had been waiting eight long years for a kidney, and now because of my decision to donate, she had a chance at a new life. We hugged tightly, tears streaming down both our faces as we exchanged words of gratitude and hope. In that moment, I knew I had made the right decision, and that the bond between us would be unbreakable.
After the successful transplant, Vonchelle was recovering well. I visited her in the hospital, watching as she slowly regained her strength and vitality. Her daughters were by her side, holding her hand and smiling through their tears. As I looked at them, I felt a sense of fulfillment that I had never experienced before. In giving Vonchelle the gift of life, I had also given myself a gift — the knowledge that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope, always a chance for something beautiful to emerge. And as I left the hospital that day, I knew that the experience would stay with me forever, a reminder of the power of human connection and the beauty of selfless giving.
