一、阅读理解
Theater is a big part of what makes New York shine. This city is full of talent that even the youngest can appreciate, and at the best Broadway shows, everyone in your crew will be interested.
The Lion King
There’s a reason Simba’s story continues to draw in crowds year after year: It’s an amazing production with amazing sets and a moving score. Seeing The Lion King live is something like a ceremony for New York kids. Unconvinced? Ask the 100 million+audience members worldwide who’ve seen the performance.
Ages 8 and up.
Six
On a concert stage, backed by an all-female band, the six wives of Tudor Dynasty Henry VIII air their complaints in the form of modern pop. The queens sing their heads off, and the audience loses its mind. Some of the stories are pretty dark, but the girl-power dance moves will make older kids excited.
Ages 10 and up.
Wicked
Based on novelist Gregory Maguire’s 1995 adult variation on L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Wicked shows what happened before the events in the children’s book. The musical addresses complex themes, such as standards of beauty and morality. While children five and up are permitted in the theater, little ones might be afraid of the flying monkeys.
Ages 8 and up.
Come from Away
One of the more unlikely musicals on Broadway is an excellent choice for the family: Come from Away is the tense but humane story of an airport in Gander, Newfoundland, where 38 planes and more than 6,000 passengers were forced to land on September 11,2001. It raises big topics, but in such a way that invites thoughtful discussion.

When a stranger gave Danille and her husband Nathan a box of onions which they later found they didn’t need, she decided to pass the kindness on.
Mindful of many families struggling to feed their loved ones, Danielle placed the onions outside her home with a sign encouraging locals to “take what you need, share what you can”. Now, one year on, their stand, called the “Waverley Co-op”, provides thousands of locals with 500kg of fruit, vegetables, and bread each week. “Residents and charities donate some produce, and we top this up with $100 of fresh fruit and other foods,” says Danielle, who explains that others began adding to the stand with their own donations.
“A common story we hear is that the items people take from the stand enable them to save a few extra dollars so they can afford to buy meat that week.” For a new mum Stacey, it’d been the lifeline she needed to keep food on the table for her family.
Last year, the 33-year-old’s one-year-old son Kaidan ran into a hot fire screen, badly burning his hands and forehead. Then, her husband lost his job. With Kaidan needing urgent medical care in Hobart 200km away, the mother spent four weeks at her son’s bedside before returning home, which led to piles of overdue bills at home. “Without the help of the Waverley Co-op, we wouldn’t have had food or nappies,” says Stacey, who discovered the volunteer-led stand by word of mouth.
“It has been a blessing to hear the stories and meet the people in our community,” says Danielle, who couldn’t be happier that a box of onions brought so many people together. “The invisible atmosphere of trust, support, and connection — that’s been the biggest success!”
4、How did Danielle deal with the onions?
A. She let others take them away. B. She donated them to a stand.

Globally, tobacco is the king of intoxicating plants, and now we can trace its cultural roots directly back to the Ice Age.
Recently, four tobacco plant seeds found in an ancient Utah fireplace suggest early Americans might have been using the plant 12,300 years ago. The finding makes the first known use of tobacco some 9,000 years earlier than previously thought. Researchers believe hunter-gatherers in the Great Salt Lake Desert may have smoked wads of the plant. Until now, the earliest evidence of tobacco use was a 3,300-year-old smoking pipe discovered in Alabama.
Scientists discovered the millimetre-wide seeds at the Wishbone site, an ancient camp in the desert in what is now northern Utah. There, they found the rest of an ancient hearth that was surrounded by bone and stone artifacts.
Their findings suggest the native American hunter-gatherers may have consumed the tobacco while cooking or tool-making, the scientists say in a paper published in the journal Nature Human Behaviour.
The tobacco plant is native to the Americas and contains the psychoactive addictive substance nicotine. Tobacco was widely cultivated and spread around the world following the arrival of Europeans in the Americas at the end of the 15th century, which played a sacred, ceremonial, or medical role among the ancient Mayans and other Native American groups, and helped boost the colonial economy of the United States.
“The tobacco seeds were the big surprise. They are incredibly small and rare to be preserved,” said Daron Duke, a researcher of the Far Western Anthropological Research Group. “Today, the Great Salt Lake Desert is a large dry lake. But 12,300 years ago, the camp would have been on a vast marshland. We know very little about their culture. The thing that interests me most about this find is the social window it gives to a simple activity in an undocumented past. My imagination runs wild.”
8、What does the finding suggest in Paragraph 2?
A. Americans prefer using smoking pipes.
B. Tobacco plants can easily be found around America.
C. Americans have a longer history of tobacco use than we thought.
D. Tobacco plants were introduced into America 9,000 years ago.
9、What did scientists find at the ancient camp?
A. Some animal meat. B. A rich farming land.
C. A modern hunting tool. D. Small tobacco seeds.
10、What can we learn from Paragraph 5?
A. Europeans contributed to the spread of tobacco.
B. Americans started learning to smoke in the 1500s.
C. Tobacco was first planted in America by Europeans.
D. People extremely cared about the effects of smoking.
11、What did Daron Duke think of the discovery of tobacco seeds?
A. Threatening. B. Amazing. C. Alarming. D. Satisfying.
Box jellyfish (箱型水母) are the most poisonous marine animals known to man. They measure 3 meters long and weigh up to 2 kilograms. They are pale blue and transparent in color, and get their name from the cube-like shape of their body. Box jellyfish have 6 eyes on all 4 sides of their body, although it is uncertain how they process what they see as they do not have a central nervous system. They also have up to 15 tentacles (触须) growing from each corner of their body that have about 5,000 stinging (带刺的) cells each.
Box jellyfish can be found primarily in the coastal waters off Northern Australia as well as throughout the Indo-Pacific. They prefer to live at river mouths. They do not have any organs to breathe, and will sleep on the ocean floor from 3 p.m. to dawn. Unlike other jellyfish that merely move along with the current, box jellyfish have developed a way to travel wherever they want to go. They will shoot themselves in a jet-like fashion, reaching speeds of up to 7.4 kilometers per hour.
The diet of box jellyfish consists of thing like fish, small animals, and even other jellyfish. They use their venom, a chemical which causes heart, skin, and breath failure, to kill their prey. Since box jellyfish have eyes, some scientists believe that they actively hunt their prey, holding the belief that box jellyfish have developed a special set of eyes similar to humans that help them skillfully avoid obstacles in the ocean, while others insist that they are just passive opportunists that will wait and catch anything that wanders into their tentacles.
Box jellyfish are responsible for more human deaths in Australia than snakes, sharks, and salt-water crocodiles combined. It is best to avoid them as most stings will result in death. Hopefully, humans and box jellyfish can find a way to live with one another while keeping conflicts to a bare minimum. After all, such a unique species of jellyfish deserves to live and grow just as humans do.
12、Which of the following is NOT mentioned about box jellyfish from the first paragraph?
A. Its size. B. Its poisonousness. C. Its color. D. Its hardness.
13、What can we infer about box jellyfish from the passage?
A. They live in the deep sea in groups.
B. They can breathe on the ocean floor.
C. They can decide the direction in which they move.
D. They usually move along with the current.
14、The underlined word “they” in Paragraph 2 refers to ________.
A. box jellyfish B. scientists
C. box jellyfish’s prey D. box jellyfish’s tentacles
15、What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To introduce some poisonous animals.
B. To describe a kind of animal under the sea.
C. To illustrate scientists’ research into box jellyfish.
D. To show the relationship between humans and jellyfish.

Four Rules for Successful Plant Cloning
Plant growers have two choices when it comes to starting new plants: growing from seed, or plant cloning. And plant clones offer advantages that growing plants from seed can’t offer. Growing from clones, you’re sure to have all females, and as long as you do the cloning yourself, you know who the mother plant is and how your clones will grow, yield, and get you high. ①______.
Take your plant cuttings from a healthy mother plant
Plant cloning gives you genetic copies of your mother plant. ②______, your clones get the best start possibly. Avoid using mother plants that are sick, or that are plagued with pests.
③______
Most plant clones prefer temperatures slightly higher than your ideal grow room temperature, and they don’t like a day and night cycle with a temperature drop at night. That’s why most growers root their cuttings under lighting that stays on 24 hours a day. The lighting itself creates temperature stabilization. Temperatures between 74 — 77 degrees Fahrenheit are the range you want.
Clones like high humidity
Your cuttings need a humid environment in the 75 — 95% humidity range until they’ve created roots and are able to intake water through them. That’s why many plant cloners use humidity covers. You need to wait your clones have functioning roots. ④______, they’ll die.
Use sterile equipment and materials
You already figured out that your scissors, knife or other tools for cutting clones has to be clean. But you also want to make sure you trays, cloning covers, and root zone media are clean and sterile too. ⑤______. Start fresh every time.
When you follow these plant cloning tips, your clone success rate should be nearly 100%.
A. If they’re in dry air
B. Use kind LED lighting
C. Give your plant clones consistent climate
D. But it’s an art and science to plant cloning
E. Don’t reuse cloning cubes or cloning powders and gels
F. If you’re taking 20 clones and seeing only 10 of them survive
G. If your mother plants are strong, healthy, and have potent genetics

I visited your marine park with my friends yesterday. I’m sorry but I have to say that I was disappointed with the service your staff provided and the food your restaurant supplied.

Yours sincerely,
