1.阅读理解(2022年越秀区八年级期末试题)
A
When I was 17, I read about a museum called the McNay. On a sunny Saturday, Sally and I drove over to the museum. She asked, “Do you have the address?” “No, but I’ll recognize it. There was a picture in the magazine.”
“Oh, stop. There it is!”
The museum was free. We entered, excited. The people sitting in the hall stopped talking and stared at us.
“May I help you?” a man asked. “No,” I said. “We’re fine.” I didn’t want to listen to a tour guide talking about a painting I was not interested in. Sally had gone upstairs. The people in the hall seemed very strange, keeping their eyes on me. “Where do you think you are?” he asked. “The McNay Art Museum!” I answered. He smiled, shaking head. “Sorry, it is on New Braunfels Street.” “Then, what’s this place?” I asked, still confused. “Well, it’s our home.” “What?!” I was shocked. I ran to the staircase and called out, “Sally! Come down immediately!”
“There’re some really good works of art up there.” She stepped down, looking puzzled. I pushed her towards the front door, waving at the family, saying, “Sorry, please forgive us. You have a really nice place.”
The real McNay was wonderful, but we felt nervous the whole time we were there. Van Gogh, Picasso, Da Vinci, Monet... This time, we stayed together, in case anything else unusual happened.
On a sunny day 30 years later, a woman came close to me. “Excuse me, did you ever enter a house, long ago, thinking it was the McNay Museum?”
“Yes... But how do you know?”
“Well, that was my home. I was the teenager sitting at the corner of the hall that day. Before you came over, I never realized what a beautiful place I lived in. My feelings about my home changed after that. I’ve always wanted to thank you.”
26. Why did the writer refuse the help from the man in the house?
A. She mistook him for a tour guide. B. She knew more about art than the man.
C. She wondered why people kept eyes on her. D. She felt nervous when talking to strangers.
27. Why did the writer describe the real McNay museum in just a few words?
A. The McNay was not attractive compared with the house.
B. She was too angry to spend much time at the real museum.
C. She was still shocked by the event happening in the house.
D. The real museum didn’t have enough artwork to interest her.
28. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. People should have good taste to enjoy life.
B. People should spend more time with their family.
C. People would like to educate teenagers at a museum.
D. People usually pay no attention to the beauty around them.
29. How does the writer develop the story?
A. By showing facts. B. By giving examples.
C. By following the order of time. D. By following the change of people’s words.
【答案】26. A 27. C 28. D 29. C

Rethinking “Smarter” Cities
The idea of “smart” cities was first put forward in the 1970s. Since then, it has spread to more and more countries. People hoped new technologies could help them live happier lives in cities.
Governments aren’t the only ones interested in building “smarter” cities. Many companies see the smart city program as a great chance to make money. Leading tech companies have all offered their smart-city solutions. However, many project designers don’t have a clear idea of what they are going to achieve. They proudly show off exciting new technologies like 5G, but they don’t know how to use them to solve real-world problems. In other words, they sound more like tech sales people than city builders.
This can cause many problems. City planning should always center around one question: What can be done to improve people’s living conditions? Private companies, however, have to take care of their own business interests first. Their answer to every problem is simply more technology. Their solutions often have nothing to do with people’s daily lives.
Sometimes, the problem is not a shortage of “smart” technologies. For example, self-driving cars are certainly “smarter” than bicycles. However, they may cause much more traffic jams. They don’t really make the city a better place to live.
City managers should carefully think about the kind of life to provide for people. Planners and tech developers should work according to this blueprint(蓝图). They should stop worrying about making our cities “smarter” and start to focus on making them better.
34. Which of the following “interest” has the same meaning as the underlined one in Paragraph 3?
A. By then, I’ve lost interest in the game.
B. Her main interests are music and tennis.
C. You can find many places of interest in Guangzhou.
D. The law was made to protect the interests of the local people.
35. According to the writer, what should be the first step to build a better city?
A. We should be able to avoid traffic jams.
B. Companies should take care of their business interests.
C. Companies should develop more technological products.
D. City planners must think about a better life for their people.
36. Why does the writer use “rethinking” in the title?
A. We should have more ideas for smarter cities.
B. Better cities are more necessary than smarter ones.
C. Bicycles will make city lives more enjoyable than smart cars.
D. Companies should think of more solutions for their own problems.
【答案】34. D 35. D 36. B

Ink wash painting (水墨画), Peking Opera, paper cutting…What happens if we use these traditional art styles in cartoons? In fact, Chinese cartoon makers have been working on this. Their works are full of Chinese features.
Little Tadpole Looking for Mummy, 1960
This is China’s first ink wash cartoon. Influenced by the great artist Qi Baishi, the cartoon makers drew all the animals, plants and rocks in the film with ink and brush. The Legend of Sealed Book, 1983

Pigsy Eats Watermelon, 1958
Zhu Bajie finds some watermelons. He doesn’t bring the fruit back to his hungry friends, but enjoys the watermelons all by himself. The character Zhu Bajie was cut out of colored paper. Cartoon makers moved its body parts and let it “eat” the watermelon.

A picture speaks a thousand words. And nowadays, people like to use emojis to show their words instead of speaking or writing. According to some experts, the Emoji is the language which develops the fastest in the UK’s history. Now in Britain, emojis are becoming more popular than short forms like “lol” (laughing out loud), or “muah” (the sound of a kiss). They are leading a new way of communication and are even thought as art!
“Big red heart” emojis seem to be well loved! Because using these emojis makes the text full of personal characters. People can have fun when they use emojis to express themselves. Han Qian, 35, is now responsible for recruitment(招募)at the Volunteer Department of the Beijing 2022 Organizing Committee. Thirteen years ago, he was a volunteer at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
“I’m honored to take part in two Olympics,” said Han. “Being a volunteer is different from organizing them, though both are great experiences. Passion is necessary for being a volunteer, which requires volunteers to be in high spirits and warm-hearted. But being an organizer, they may face many new challenges because more thinking and planning are needed in organizing volunteers.”
Because of COVID-19, volunteers need to be quarantined(隔离)after the test events as well as after the Winter Olympics and Paralympics(残奥会). This means they have to give up more time for this job. As around 90 percent of the volunteers are university students, according to Han, this could affect their schoolwork. So Han's team has helped schools to support the students as much as they can.
Han’s team worked with schools to recruit students. “For example, volunteers from Tsinghua University are responsible for the National Stadium, while those from Peking University take care of the National Aquatics Center, Han said. The cold weather is another challenge, as some games will be held outdoors. The outdoor volunteers need to have physical training, like 15-kilometer walks, to prepare for their work. The organizing committee also provides hats, warmer pads and more frequent shifts for them.
“Many volunteers have developed interest in winter sports because of this experience,” Han said. “I’ve seen them post pictures of themselves skiing and skating. I’m happy that the volunteering experience is meaningful for them.”

A. It needs great love from volunteers. B. There are many new challenges.

A. Paralympics. B. Winter Olympics. C. Test events. D. Being quarantined.

We had just moved into a big, old house with some unused wine cellars(地窖)under the house. Because some of the areas were very old and in bad condition, my husband warned me not to walk into them alone.
One day, when I was doing cleaning, the doorbell rang. I ran to open it, but no one was there. Only a beautiful cat was sitting there, looking up at me with big, intelligent eyes. There was no way that she could have rung the doorbell by herself, was there? Were my new neighbors playing jokes on me?
We decided to welcome the new family member and my husband called her Angel. She was always by my side and she enjoyed exploring the mysterious rooms as much as I did.
My husband was away on business for a week, and I couldn’t wait to do more exploration. I took a good flashlight, and carefully started down the shaky ladder.
I don’t remember what happened. But I woke up with pieces of the broken ladder lying around me on the stone cellar floor. My flashlight couldn’t work. My arm ached. The only light I could see was a square of daylight from the hole above. I could also see Angel looking down at me. Thank goodness, she hadn’t fallen into the cellar.
There was no way I could get out of the deep cellar. I suddenly remembered that I had brought my cell phone with me. Excitedly reaching into my pocket, I pulled out a phone. Sadly, I wasn’t getting any signal in this cellar.
An idea finally came to me. If I could get the phone up through the hole, it might connect to the Internet so I could shout at Siri from down below to call for help.
Angel kept her eye on me as I said to myself about my plan. I turned up the sound of the phone, then I threw the phone upward. Luckily, Angel managed to bat the phone down right by the hole, close enough for me to instruct Siri to call the police. With them on the line, I cried out my situation. I told them to look for a cat. I hope this would rescue me from danger.
Then I instructed Angel to lead the police to me. She looked back at me knowingly and walked away. Finally the police followed Angel to my side.
I no longer wonder if it was Angel herself rang the doorbell that that.

There are a lot of impolite behaviors in public transport in the world, such as eating and drinking, lying down, playing loud music, manspreading and so on.
Manspreading is used to describe the posture of men who open their legs too wide and take up neighboring seats.
In Spain some signs are put up in the buses to try to discourage the practice. It is said that the new signs are intended to remind people to respect the space of all bus passengers.
The bus company came up with the suggestion in partnership with a women’s group. They demanded online that such signs must be placed. They said, “All public transport has signs explaining that room needs to be made for pregnant women, people with babies, older people and the disabled. But there’s something that affects all of us, especially every time we use public transport: manspreading.”
Manspreading is also common on the underground. To stop people using the posture that makes others uncomfortable, three years ago, the New York subway began to work out the problem with a set of activities called “Stop the spread please. It’s a space problem.”
In an effort to further clean up the underground, and to make the journey more comfortable for pregnant ladies and those with children, women-only carriages have been introduced to some Chinese cities’ underground during rush hours. They tried to provide the service for the public, with each train having one “ladies-first” car. Male passengers are encouraged to avoid the cars during morning and evening rush hours.
“We hope that every passenger can enjoy a happy and comfortable journey. Travel will be happier, if we treat others with good manners,” a leader of an underground company said.

What’s going to happen in the future? Here are some things that scientists say are most likely to happen 10 to 30 years later from now.
1. Digital money
We used to pay with cash(现金)for everything we bought. In fact we are already using one kind of digital money when we swipe(刷)our bus pass or use a credit card(信用卡)to shop online. You have to admit that using a card is much easier than searching your pocket for change. It is also safer than carrying a lot of cash with you. People in Sweden all stopped using cash last year and the US might be the next.
2.Bionic(仿生)Eye
People who are blind may have a chance to get their sight back---by wearing bionic eyes. A blind eye can no longer sense light, but a bionic eye can use a camera to “see” the environment and send the message into brain. Although the bionic eye now only allow patients to see lights and unclear shapes, a better and clearer bionic eye could be just a few years away.
3.Self-driving car
Unlike a human driver, a self-driving car won’t lose attention because of a phone call, a radio or something outside the window. Sensors(探测器)and cameras on the car would allow it to keep strictly to the rules of the road and keep a safe distance from other cars. This would greatly reduce the number of road accidents. Many companies are now planning self-driving cars. By 2045, driverless cars will be the main transport on the road.

D. Bionic eyes may be improved soon.
33. How is a self-driving car different from a human driver?
A. A human driver is able to control the speed and distance better.
B. A human driver better knows the traffic rules.
C. A self-driving car can pay full attention to road conditions.
D. A self-driving car can understand a phone call, or a radio better.
34. What may probably happen in the future?
A. People will pay everything with cash.
B. Blind people’s eyes may recover with the help of the doctors.

Although we often hear about driverless cars, it is still not clear when we will be able to buy one to make those long boring road trips a lot easier. Let’s take a look at why.
What driverless technology is in use now?
The idea of a driverless car dates back to 1939! However, we are not sure what driverless technology can and can’t do. When most people think of driverless cars, they think of sitting back in their car and reading a book while the car does all the work and gets them to where they want to go. In fact, that kind of technology is many years away. At the moment, our car can help control the direction, but our attention must still be on the road. Before smarter technology becomes popular, people will need to deal with a lot of problems, such as getting the car to understand the road signs and allowing cars to “connect” to one another. In this way, all cars can be aware of what is happening around them.
What problems are driverless cars facing?
There are a few reasons why driverless cars may take some time to come to fruition.
Although AI and driverless skills have developed for a long time, AI still isn’t as smart as a human brain when something happens suddenly. Driverless technology needs to be able to deal with some accidents before it can become truly popular.
Online attack is also a kind of danger. Hackers(黑客)could get into your car and take control of your car, using their skills to either steal your car or even hurt you. Our technology must be safe before we give too much trust in driverless cars.
Driverless cars could actually make the air pollution worse. If people are able to sleep or work in their cars, there will be even less reason to get public transport(公共交通). Unless driverless cars are all powered by clean energy, the planet won’t be better with more driverless cars.
33. About driverless cars, the writer agrees that ________.
A. we can buy some in the near future.
B. they were first invented in the 21st century.
C. hackers will surely operate our cars through the Internet.
D. the drivers still have to pay their attention on the road for now.
34. The following phrase “_____” has the same meaning as the underlined phrase “come to fruition” in Paragraph 3.
A. come into use B. run free C. set off D. take place
35. According to the passage, driverless cars are facing the problems EXCEPT ________.
A. air pollution B. high price C. online attacks D. AI technology
36 How does the writer organize the article?
A. B. C. D.

Driverless technology needs to be able to deal with some accidents before it can become truly popular.” 故选A。
35.推理判断题。根据文中“Although AI and driverless skills have developed for a long time, AI still isn’t as smart as a human brain when something happens suddenly;Online attack is also a kind of danger;Driverless cars could actually make the air pollution worse.”

根据“This short story now can be read on FluentU, together with the help of short videos, so you can use all of FluentU’s great language-learning methods while reading this old story again.” 故选A。
