Rabbit Shiny and tortoise(乌龟)Smily were neighbors. One day they were reading a story about their great grandfathers: Shiny’s and Smily’s great grandfathers decided to have a race. While Shiny’s great grandfather fell asleep during the race, Smily’s great grandfather won the race by slowly walking towards the finishing line.
Smily said, “If your great grandfather didn’t go to sleep, my great granddad might never win. So his win was not a real win.”
The next day there was a notice in the jungle(丛林)newspaper. It said that there would be a race and the winner would win many prizes. The race started from the bear’s house. From there, the runners had to cross the river. But most of the animals could not both run fast and swim fast. So they didn’t know what to do. Shiny and Smily made a plan.
Shiny ran, while smily was sitting on his back. He and other animals, like the deer, reached the river side at the same time. But they saw the swift(湍急的)water and stood there because they were worried. None of them liked the idea of crossing the river. Smily quickly got into the water and Shiny sat on his back. Smily started swimming. Soon they reached the other side of the river. Shiny got down from Smily’s back and Smily climbed on Shiny’s back again. Shiny ran fast. They reached the finish line first.

Now there is a family problem. Nearly every parent says that we never grow up. In fact we are probably 16 or 17 years old. In our parents’ eyes, we are always little children and often do wrong things. For example, when I need to stay at home alone, they always worry about me and my life without them.
Most parents always think that they offer(提供) the best things they can to make their children live in a comfortable world. They buy their children pretty clothes, cool shoes, everything that they can for their children. In return(反过来), they only want their children to get good grades in the exams.
But why can’t their children still understand them? Does it mean that we still want more material(物质) things? No. In fact, what we want is a true family. What does a true family mean? I think it means a place where we can keep ourselves away from the cold world outside. From here, we can get warmth, we can get consolation(安慰), and we can get happiness. And one important thing is that we should be stronger and more confident(自信的) in the outside world because we know that we have a true family.

My two little daughters and I usually go out and help others on Thankful Thursday.
Last Thursday we were going to buy lunch for the beggars(乞丐) in the street. Then we went to the nearest McDonald’s.
I ordered 15 lunches from it and drove my car to hand them out. We gave the lunches to the beggars. They were excited. We were happy to see that. Then we noticed a small, old woman, asking for pocket money. We gave her our last lunch bag. Before we got into the car, she started to speak to us, “No one has ever done anything like this for me before,” she said with a smile. “Well, I’m glad that we were the first,” I answered. “So when will you eat your lunch,” I asked. She just looked at me with her big, tired brown eyes and said, “Oh, dear, I’m not going to eat this lunch. You see, I have a little daughter. I usually can’t buy her favorite food, but today she will be so happy!”

It was a long and hot summer that year, and Anne enjoyed it with the whole heart. When it was over, she went back and studied hard in Miss Stacy’s Queen’s class for that terrible thing known as “the Entrance”. Anne grew so quickly that one day Marilla was surprised to find that the girl was taller than herself. Another difference was that she talked less.
“You don’t talk half as much as you were in the past, Anne. What has come over you?”
“I don’t know... I don’t want to talk as much,” Anne said, turning red. “It’s nicer to think dear, pretty thoughts and keep them in one’s heart, like treasures.”
After months of studying, Anne went to town for the exams. When she returned to Green Gables, three weeks passed without the exam results appearing. Anne did not know what to do with herself!
Then one evening, Anne was sitting at her open window when she saw Diana come running up the hill with a newspaper in her hand.
“Anne, you’ve passed,” she cried, “and you came first—you and Gilbert both—you are tied.”
“Well now, I always said it,” said Matthew, looking at the exam result list delightedly, “I knew you could beat them all easily.”

I woke up as the plane started to land at Auckland airport. I had not slept for much of the flight from Singapore because I was so excited. This was my first trip abroad without my parents. It was a school trip for Grade 6 students, all aged 11 years old.
After the arrival, we got on a bus which took us to a place called Miranda, where we stayed the night.
The next day we got up early, had breakfast, and took the bus to Thames. On the way we stopped at a gold mine(矿). I searched for pieces of gold but didn’t find any. At Thames we visited a cave where we saw a huge spider eating a fly. That was interesting!
The third day was very unforgettable. We went to a Maori village. Maoris are the original people who have lived in the New Zealand for thousands of years. I made friends with a Maori boy of my own age called Aaron. Aaron took me to his large house. He had many pets including a dog, a cat, a chicken and an ostrich(鸵鸟)! The ostrich was much taller than me with a funny head and long legs. It was a little bit frightening!
That night for dinner we had a barbecue and finally before going to bed we played a game of football. My team won 3 to 1.
The next morning was our last day in New Zealand. We went back to Aaron’s village where the Maori men lined up and performed a haka—this is a war dance. We then sang a song for them and then everyone became friends. It was a wonderful experience.
After that we went to a place called Rotorua where we saw boiling mud pools and geysers(间歇性喷泉). The geysers shot water into the air 10 metres high! It was amazing!

Black Beauty is one of the best-loved children’s books and it is the only story that Anna Sewell wrote. It became a best-seller as soon as it was published and has sold over 30 million copies.
In the book Black Beauty, a horse, tells the story of his life. It starts with happy memories of when he was young and was living with his mother on Farmer Grey’s farm. Farmer Grey is a kind and loving master but his mother warns him that not all masters are the same: “There are good men like our master, but there are bad men too.”
Farm Grey sells Black Beauty to Squire Gordon, where he makes two very good friends: Merrylegs and Ginger. After that Black Beauty changes homes and owners many times. He often has to work under difficult conditions, working long hours and wearing a short rein. At the end of the book he is sold to three ladies who look after him well. And he is reunited with a young groom who loved and looked after him at Squire Gordon’s house.
Anna Sewell was an excellent horsewoman and driver and she believed that we should look after animals. During Anna’s lifetime, in Victorian England, horses were work animals and were treated badly. She disapproved of hunting and of using short reins which were both popular at the time. The book helped abolish(废除)short reins which were fashionable but painful for the horses.

Du Fu (712-770), one of the greatest poets in China, is familiar to most of us. However, Du has remained largely unknown in the Western world.
The BBC’s one-hour documentary Du Fu: China’s Greatest Poet introduces the great poet to Western people. As the first English-language documentary about Du, it compares him to Dante and Shakespeare, two of the greatest masters of literature of the West.
In the film, British historian, Michael Wood explores the poet’s life. He visits a number of places, such as the poet’s birthplace Gongyi, Henan Province and the Du Fu Thatched Cottage(杜甫草堂) in Chengdu, Sichuan, where Du used to live. Along the way, he meets and talks to people who help to tell the stories of the poet.
The documentary explains why Du’s works have been popular for centuries. “Chinese people really value the recording of history and Du is better than anyone at reflecting(反映) history in his poetry. That’s because historical events are mirrored in his own life and spiritual(精神的) journey,” said Zeng Xiangbo, a professor at Renmin University of China.
Du was a civil servant(文职人员) in the country. But as the An Lushan Rebellion of 755 floored the empire, he escaped, took his family on the road as refugees(难民), and endured starvation(饥俄) and poverty(贫穷). Through ups and downs, the poet never stopped writing, pouring out his concern for his country and people, as well as celebrating the simple joys of life. Known as China’s “saint of poetry”, he wrote about 1,500 poems that are still with us today.
