Soon after, she entered "Apps for Good", a competition that encourages students to create positive change through technology. Teaming up with her friend, Jordan Stirbu, she laid the foundations for the "Jazzy Recycling".

The "Jazzy Recycling" application is designed to encourage young people to recycle rubbish more, which wins the favor of the youth. It turns waste disposal into a game and helps you find places to recycle it. Then you scan what you need to recycle, share it, and get rewards such as shopping vouchers(代币券) and games to be unlocked for what you have recycled.

Tapping into the teen enthusiasm for sharing every little aspect of their daily life on social media, recycling efforts can be shared too as a fun game among friends, which can make more people take part in recycling activities.

Zea explains why she is addicted to the Internet and how technology has changed her ideas about the future, "I used to think technology was just fixing computers and using smartphones; I have become very tired of just using what is available. I have discovered another side of it and that I can make technology of my own."

In fact, Zea Tongeman has taken the idea of recycling seriously and hopes all her fellow human beings would give it a serious thought.         Elephants are the largest land mammals on Earth, and understanding them better could lead to some incredibly large breakthroughs in science. Researchers are doing a deep-dive study on elephant trunks, with the aim of improving the future of robotics.

Elephants' trunks are both delicate and strong—they are capable of grasping a single leaf but can also carry nearly 600 pounds. And scientists argue that these multifunctional trunks—called proboscis—are incredible inspiration for the next generation of bio-inspired(仿生) robots.

"Classical robots are extremely good for performing a specific task for which they've been designed. If you want that robot to do something a little different, it will fail," said Michel Milinkovitch, a professor of the physics of biology at the University of Geneva.

In new research, scientists explained how elephants can move their trunks with almost unlimited degrees of freedom, combining about 20 basic movements to carry out more complicated movements. "Elephants have sort of a toolkit of simple movements, and they can combine these simple movements to complex trajectories(轨迹)," Milinkovitch said. "They can adapt to the object you give them." The study also found that elephants can form "pseudo-joints" with their trunks, similar to the structure of a human elbow() and wrist.

"It's also a feeling of wonder just looking at these amazing creatures," Milinkovitch said, noting that African forest elephants and African savanna elephants are endangered species. "We also hope to increase awareness of the conservation of this very unique animal," he said. "There are a lot of principles that we can learn from nature; it's not just there for our happy life—it is really an incredible source of engineering principles."

8What is the inspiration of elephants' trunks for bio-inspired robots?

    A. They are too strong to break easily.

    B. They are adaptable to different tasks.

C.They are long enough to carry out tasks.

    D. They are good at performing simple tasks.

9What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

    A. Humans should treasure the happy life.

    B. Humans should apply engineering principles.

    C. Elephants in the world are on the edge of extinction.

    D. Raising awareness of animal conservation is significant.

10Where is the text probably from?

    A. A science magazine. B.A news review.

    C. An advertisement.  D. A tourist brochure.

11What is a suitable title for the text?

For generations, depression has been seen as an illness, disorder or even weakness. Such an idea makes sense because depression causes suffering and even death. But what if we've got it all wrong?

The common wisdom is that depression starts in the mind with abnormal thinking. That leads to symptoms like headaches, stomachaches, or tiredness. Now, models like the Polyvagal Theory suggest that we've got it backward. It's the body that detects danger and initiates a defense strategy meant to help us survive. That biological strategy is called immobilization, and it demonstrates in the mind and the body with a set of symptoms we call depression.

When we think of depression as unnecessary suffering, we are telling people with depression that they are not part of the group, they are not right and they don't belong. That robs them of hope. But when we begin to understand that depression, at least initially, happens for a good reason we lift the shame. Instead, people with depression are courageous survivors, not damaged sick people.

The autonomic nervous system(ANS) is constantly scanning our internal and external environment for signs of danger. If our ANS detects a threat or even a simple lack of safety, its next strategy is the fight or flight response, which we often feel as anxiety. Sometimes the threat is so bad or goes on for so long, that the nervous system decides there is no way to fight or to flee. At that point, there is only one option left: immobilization.

The immobilization response is the original biological defense in higher animals. It dulls pain and makes us feel disconnected. Think of some reptiles(爬行动物), which shut down their bodies to avoid cold temperatures and the lack of food and water. In humans, people often describe feeling "out of their bodies" during extremely unpleasant events, which has a defensive effect of reducing the emotional shock. This is important because some things are so terrible, we don't want people to be fully present when they happen. What incredible capacity of our biology to find a way in hard times!

12Why does the author mention the Polyvagal Theory?

    A. To offer a standard for identifying depression.

    B. To raise people's awareness of mental problems.

    C. To make sense of how depression affects people.

    D. To correct a commonly held idea about depression.

13What can we infer from Paragraph 3?

    A. Depression can bring people in crisis hope.

    B. People may feel it wrong to have depression.

C.Depression is an unnecessary human emotion.

    D. People often feel proud of fighting depression.

14What is "immobilization" in the text?

    A. Building up anxiety. B. Rising to challenges.

    C. Shutting down action. D. Pulling through a crisis.

15In which order does our body react to an extremely unpleasant situation?

    seek to work out solutions

    become aware of a threat

    experience emotional shock

    start defensive disconnection

    A.②③④① B.④②①③ C.②①③④ D.④①②③

    34阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Grandma got Grandpa out of bed and helped him to the kitchen for breakfast. After his meal, she led him to his armchair in the living room where he would rest while she cleaned the dishes. Every so often, she would check to see if he needed anything.

This was their daily routine after Grandpa's latest stroke. Although once a very active man, his severely damaged left arm, difficulty walking and slurred(含糊不清的) speech now kept him housebound. For nearly a year he hadn't even been to church or to visit family.

Grandpa filled his hours with television. He watched the news and game shows while Grandma went about her day. They made a promise—he was not to leave his chair or his bed without her assistance.

"If you fell and I threw my back out trying to help you, who would take care of us?" Grandma would ask him. She was resolved they should take care of themselves and live independently. The Brooklyn brownstone had been their first home and held wonderful memories. They weren't ready to leave it behind anytime soon.

Immigrants from Ireland, they had met and married in America. Grandma was friendly, outgoing and unselfish; Grandpa was reserved, a man devoted to his family, but he wasn't big on giving gifts. While he wouldn't think twice about giving Grandma the shirt off his back, he had the belief that if you treated your wife well throughout the year, presents weren't necessary; so he rarely purchased gifts for her.

It was a cold, gray February morning, a typical winter's day in New York. As always, Grandma walked Grandpa to his chair. "I'm going to take a shower now." She handed him the television remote. "If you need anything, I'll be back in a little while."

After her shower, she glanced towards the back of Grandpa's recliner(躺椅) but noticed that his cane was not leaning in its usual spot. Sensing something unusual, she went into the room. He was gone. The closet door stood open and his hat and overcoat were missing. Fear ran down her spine. Grandma threw a coat over her bathrobe and ran outside.

    注意:

    (1)续写词数应为150左右;

    Dear Mr. Smith,

I'm lucky enough to have attended your lecture regarding cultural differences between China and Britain. It is so impressive, benefiting me a lot.

During the lecture, you mainly introduced to us what the specific differences are, why they came into being and how we can communicate properly on different occasions. Undoubtedly, such a lecture helps me gain a deeper insight into my own and your cultures and builds my confidence in cross-cultural communication.

Thank you so much! And I'm looking forward to more wonderful lectures concerning what you specialize in.

    Yours sincerely,

    Li Hua

    Paragraph 1:

Desperately, Grandma scanned the street in both directions. Small mounds of snow and ice coated the sidewalks. Walking safely would be difficult for people who were steady on their feet, much less someone in Grandpa's condition. Where could he be? Why would he leave the house all by himself? Wringing her hands, she hardly felt the cold air as she watched the traffic rush by. As she stood alone on the street corner, guilt and worry flooded her.【高分句型一(奶奶站在堆满积雪的街道上时的内心活动)

    Paragraph 2:

Relieved to see that he was OK, she started to scold.【高分句型二】"What did you need so badly that couldn't wait? I was so worried about you!" Before Grandpa had a chance to explain, she pulled out a heart-shaped box from the bag in his good arm. "It's Valentine's Day," Grandpa said.
