Starting this fall, primary and middle school students in China will have at least one weekly course on labor education, according to a new curriculum standard released by the Ministry of Education (MOE).
Labor education ranges from household chores to on-campus labor and community volunteer services, generally 3 types according to the new standards: the first refers to everyday chores, including cleaning, organizing, cooking, and using and maintaining home appliances (家电); next is productive labor, including agriculture, making traditional handicrafts (手工艺品), and applying new technologies such as 3D printing; the third type is service work, including volunteer work. The new curriculum also calls for a week of extra-curricular and off-campus activities designed for labor education once every school year.
A recent study showed that primary and middle school students in China only spend an average of 12 minutes a day on chores, compared to 72 minutes in the US, 42 minutes in South Korea and 30 minutes in France. Many countries start students’ labor education at a young age. Finland begins to develop students’ life skills in primary school. Spinning, woodworking, cooking and other craftsmanship classes are offered. In Germany, pupils have two labor classes per week. Electronics, office technology, sewing, housekeeping, and career guidance are all taught there.
Adding labor education was out of concern that the country’s youngsters do too little housework and look down on manual labor (体力劳动) jobs. Due to great academic pressure, schools tend to put their academic curricula on the top, and parents sometimes see household chores as distractions. But, according to the MOE, labor education must be strengthened to help students develop social values, an interest in labor and finally an all-around development.
28.What is the purpose of adding labor education?
A.To enrich the students’ off-campus life.
B.To improve the students’ performance on learning.
C.To help students achieve an all-around development.
D.To follow the education mode of some western countries.
29.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The history of labor education.
B.The content of labor education.
C.The significance of labor education.
D.The future development of labor education.
30.What does labor education in Finland and Germany have in common?
A.They start labor education in the middle school.
B.There are a wide variety of labor education courses.
C.It is viewed more important than academic learning.
D.Students spend more than 30 minutes on housework daily.
31.What do we know about labor education in China?
A.A week of extracurricular activities is a must every term.
B.Students decide whether to take the courses on their own.
C.Specially-designed courses have been applied for many years.
D.The school has to recognize the importance of labor education.
Some of the most attractive pictures to come out of the Alaska earthquake are the photos that show slope (斜坡)failures, in which parts of formerly solid hills caved in,tore or let loose. And if there happened to be a road or building on top of the slopes that failed, the result was horrible.
Slopes can fail without earthquakes, as the result of pouring rain qr w:eathering. But the shaking caused by a quake — particularly a large one like what occurred near Anchorage on Friday — can either speed up the process or create entirely new failures that wouldn't have otherwise happened.
Several slope failures were documented in the Anchorage area in the hours after the earthquake Friday, the most interesting of which was on Vine Road southwest of Wasilla. It’s as if someone came along with a large destroying ball and dropped it on Vine Road, which wrinkled like a broken egg.
Scientists seemed surprised at how many slope failures occurred as a result of the 7.0-magnitude (震级)quake. The center of the quake was deep, at 27 miles below the surface — a key reason why the damage in Anchorage was relatively light. Such an earthquake would be expected to produce shaking over a large area, but probably with reasonably modest top ground accelerations, Friday’s earthquake would certainly be felt, but the surface of Earth wouldn't be moving badly enough to produce widespread landslides.
Photos from Alaska show a lot of lateral (横向的)spread, in which the ground tears open. Whatever is on top of the ground at the place it tears in half is also torn in half afterwards, like highways or buildings. The buildings surrounding the spread are also at risk of damage because of the force of the ground spreading out away from the tear. There’s also documentation of block spread,in which part of the ground breaks off a hill and slides away mostly perfect.
32.What do we know about slope failures?
A.They may cause earthquakes.
B.They usually happen with a road on top.
C.They always happen with earthquakes.
D.They may pull parts of the hills apart
33.What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A.Earthquakes have great effect on slope failures.
B.Most slope failures occur after the pouring rain.
C.Earthquakes result in slope failures immediately.
D.Slope failures occur mainly with large earthquakes.
34.What did the scientists think of the Alaska earthquake Friday?
A.It produced shaking over a large area.
B.It caused fewer slope failures than expected.
C.It wasn’t felt for its deep center.
D.It didn’t produce landslides.
35.In which circumstance can we find the ground slides down a hill almost unbroken?
A.Land slides. B.Slope failures. C.Lateral spread. D.Block spread.

67.Good friendship can get people through almost anything. Many times, a good friend will know what you need before you even ask for it, and they’ll want to offer a helping hand. That’s what happened to two friends in Caddo Hills High School. When one differently abled young man needed help, his friend went above and beyond.
When Brandon and Tanner met, Brandon was using a hand-push wheelchair. The chair was becoming kind of a pain for Brandon as he had to push his way down the halls from class to class around Caddo Hills High School. “My arms would get really tired and I would have to stop and take rests,” said Brandon.
Sometimes when they were together, Brandon would ask Tanner to push his wheelchair. Tanner was happy to help. Most often, Tanner would offer to help and he noticed how hard using this wheelchair was on his friend. Tanner thought that if his friend had had an electric wheelchair, life would be easier for him. But Brandon’s family was unable to afford it. Seeing how much his friend struggled in his wheelchair, Tanner made up his mind to do something about it. “He’s just been a really good friend and I wanted to do him a favor. I just felt like I needed to do it and I wanted to do it,” Tanner explained.
Then the enthusiastic(热心的)high school student became devoted to getting his friend a wheelchair. He got an after-school job at an auto repair shop and he worked there every afternoon. In order to help his friend out, Tanner worked part-time for two years. All of the money he earned went towards saving for a self-powered wheelchair. That moment finally came in late February, when he would present Brandon with a life-changing gift during the school day.

34.推理判断题。根据第四段第三句“Such an earthquake would be expected to produce shaking over a large area, but probably with reasonably modest top ground accelerations, Friday’s earthquake would certainly be felt, but the surface of Earth wouldn't be moving badly enough to produce widespread landslides.”(这样的地震在大范围内产生震动是意料之中,但可能是在合理适度的顶部地面加速度下,周五的地震肯定会被感觉到,但地球表面不会移动严重,足以产生广泛的滑坡。)可知,这次地震并没有产生很多震动,这个结果出乎科学家的意料。故选B项。

The giant panda, one of the surviving ancient animals, is regarded as a national treasure of China. It is loved by people worldwide.
The home of the giant panda is in the distant mountains, where it feeds on the tender bamboo leaves. With more and more forests destroyed and most of the bamboo cut down, it is becoming more and more difficult for giant pandas to find food for themselves. To protect the species from extinction, China has set up some nature reserves. China has also carried out a series of panda research and breeding programmes in cooperation with other countries. But more money is needed to these programmes.
It is our eager hope that people who care about the conservation of rare animals will lend us a hand to help save giant pandas, so that they can live with us forever.

67.At the beginning, Tanner had planned on giving Brandon all the money he had saved. That way, Brandon could buy whatever wheelchair he liked. On second thought, Tanner decided to give him an electric wheelchair as a present, in case he declined the money. With the help of his mother, Tanner found a wheelchair in an online store , which he thought would be the perfect gift for his friend. After buying the wheelchair, Tanner gave it to Brandon during the school day.
Brandon cried when he first got the wheelchair. He was so grateful to his friend for the amazing act of kindness. “Wow, I can’t believe he did that for me!” Brandon said, adding that it had been his dream to own an electric wheel-chair. Now, it was easier for him to get around, and he wouldn’t ever have to worry about his arms getting tired out again. Tanner was happy that his friend liked it. “I will help him as long as he needs me,” Tanner said, wishing more people in the world to care for the disabled.
