A zoo in Memphis, Tennessee, is returning two giant pandas that had been on loan from China for 20 years, prompting celebrations by animal advocates who said the health of the animals had worsened due to neglect.
The announcement on Wednesday came after months of criticism by In Defense of Animals and other advocacy groups that have accused the zoo of providing inadequate care to the pandas, Ya Ya and Le Le. Critics called on the zoo to provide them with better food, more un-caged time and ultimately a transfer to a panda refuge.
IDA posted a video on Twitter in February that showed the pandas pacing in circles around their enclosure as proof they were suffering from “physical, mental, and emotional deprivation.” It received thousands of likes and was retweeted by singer Billie Eilish.
A spokesperson for the zoo said the decision to return the pandas to China had nothing to do with pressure from animal advocates. China requires foreign zoos that host pandas on loan to allow older animals to spend their final days on Chinese soil. At 24 and 22, respectively, Le Le and Ya Ya have exceeded the giant panda life expectancy in the wild by almost 10 years, according to the spokesperson.
Giant pandas, whose black and white faces have made them beloved around the world, are considered a vulnerable species, with much of their mountainous natural habitat in southwest China under threat from deforestation.
According to the World Wildlife Fund, about 1,800 pandas are left in the wild and another 500 in zoos around the world. With the return of Ya Ya and Le Le to China, U.S. zoos will have a total of 10 giant pandas.
24.What is the purpose of the video posted by IDA?
A.To reveal the unknown habits of the pandas.
B.To demand the release of the ill-treated pandas.
C.To attract public attention and receive more likes
D.To appeal for improvement in the care of the pandas
25.Why did the zoo decide to return the pandas?
A.The pandas have reached a ripe old age.
B.The zoo was in financial difficulties.
C.Visitors have lost interest in the pandas.
D.Animal advocates put pressure on the zoo.
26.What is the current status of giant pandas in the wild?
A.They have short life expectancy.
B.They are critically endangered.
C.They are losing their natural habitat.
D.Their population is dramatically increasing.
27.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.IDA Calling for Release of Abused Pandas
B.Memphis Pandas to Be Returned to China
C.Ya Ya and Le Le Dying for a Home
D.A Video of Pandas Drawing Criticism
C
Using the power of artificial intelligence (AI), scientists have revealed new insights into the creation and destruction of mass extinction. Contrary to conventional knowledge, their study suggests that larger extinctions are not always a form of “creative destruction” that allows new organisms to radiate (向周围辐射出去) and evolve. Instead, it suggests that mass extinction is rarely associated with new species of radiation.
Dr. Hoyal Cuthill, the lead study author from the University of Essex in the UK and the Tokyo Institute of Technology, said in a statement, “Some of the most challenging things to understand the history of life are the vast timelines involved and the number of species. New machine learning applications can help us understand the information in human-readable form. This means that we can, so to speak, hold the evolution of half a billion years in the palm of our hand and gain new insights from what we see.”
They concluded that mass extinction and later radiation were not connected as previously thought. Within 5 percent of the most significant periods of disruption (中断), AI detected “big five mass extinctions, seven more mass extinctions, two mass extinction-radiation events and 15 mass radiations. Most importantly, it discovers that massive radiation and extinction rarely occurred with each other, changing the view that greater extinction leads to a kind of deep cycle-like species radiation of nature. It appears that larger extinctions are certainly not the engine of evolutionary radiation. Take the Cambrian Explosion for example and it was about 41 million years ago when a large group of animals first appeared on the first fossil record and the dawn of a high mobile animal equipped with modern physical features.
This new study found that a handful of other notable explosions of biodiversity, including the Cambrian Explosion, usually occurred at a time when they were largely isolated (孤立的) from extinction. Dr. Nicholas Guttenberg, a study co-author from the Tokyo Institute of Technology explained, “Ecosystems are dynamic and you don’t need anything to exist to allow something new to appear.”
28.What’s the function of the first paragraph?
A.To analyze the cause of creative destruction.
B.To tell us the result of the new study.
C.To explain the power of artificial intelligence
D.To present the conventional idea of mass extinction.
29.What do Dr. Hoyal Cuthill’s words imply?
A.New AI machines learn applications better.
B.It’s difficult to understand the history of life.
C.New species appear before mass extinction.
D.AI contributes a lot to the study of evolution.
30.Why is the Cambrian Explosion mentioned in the text?
A.To provide knowledge of history.
B.To highlight the importance of AI.
C.To support the new study.
D.To prove the previous view is right.
31.What is the text mainly about?
A.A new understanding of mass extinction.
B.The processes of biological evolution.
C.Animal species with modern physical features
D.The relationship between mass extinction and radiation
D
As the pandemic continues to influence consumer behavior, the use of non-plastic payment methods is rising. But does this spell the end of the plastic credit card era?
Since the first Diners Club credit card was unveiled in 1950 much has changed. Recent technological developments and in-store consumer preferences could suggest times are changing. For some years now, various founders of financial institutions, as well as industry experts, have foreseen plastic credit cards or any other means of physical payment methods including cash will not be around much longer. They based their predictions on the light-speed growth of digital payment.
At the beginning of the global pandemic, governments took measures to protect their citizens, leading to lockdowns of varying degrees. The fear of contracting the virus through high-traffic ATMs and the refusal of merchants to accept cash can only be seen as a great addition to an already declared war on cash. Meanwhile, the urgency to spend a minimum time period in stores in order to avoid interactions led consumers towards digital solutions.
Furthermore, options like QR codes (二维码), NFC, and PINs have been around for a while but a true market breakthrough seems to only have happened since the beginning of the pandemic. According to Worldpay, without these telecommunication innovations, the shift in people’s payment behavior is out of the question. 86% of contactless adapters built into smart devices have seen themselves proceed with contactless payment. This trend will help to wipe out cash and plastic credit cards.
From a different perspective, countries like France, Italy, and Germany had almost 150 million smartphone users in 2019 alone. And it’s been reported that 80% of the transactions (交易) will be done via Internet-backed devices by 2025. And this figure will keep rising as more and more cheap smartphones are pouring into the global market. It is expected that e-wallets are going to be the most preferred payment method by then.
So, will there be a comeback for our beloved plastic spending power? I would put away my cash and plastic cards, switch on my phone instead of inserting cards, and present QR codes at a self-checkout instead of queuing behind a mass of people. I believe that many people think the same way.
32. What are the predictions in the financial circle about?
A. The Diners Club credit card will make a comeback.
B. Consumers’ preferences will be varied around the world.
C. The era of traditional payment will come to an end soon.
D New technologies will cause the decline of physical stores.
33. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The worldwide efforts to fight against the pandemic.
B. The economic slowdown caused by the pandemic.
C. The impact of the health crisis on ways of payment.
D. The public’s tendency to shop online during lockdowns.
34. What set the stage for the trend in payment methods according to Worldpay?
A. The fast update rate of smart devices.
B. The existing digital payment technologies.
C. Many physical stores’ excellent online service.
D. The acceptance of digital payment among customers.
35. What can be inferred from Paragraph 5?
A. E-wallets will achieve increasing global popularity.
B. Smartphones will become cheaper and cheaper in the future.
C. Developed countries have high rates of Internet popularization.
D. The number of global smartphone users will rise by 80% by 2025.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Why Boundaries at Work Are Essential
What is a boundary, you ask? A boundary is a limit defining you in relation to someone or something. ____36____ If you have informed someone that this is your office space, your desk, or your chair, you have attempted to set physical boundaries.
Letting co-workers know you are not comfortable shaking their hands or hugging them at a holiday party, especially with Covid at this time, is another example of setting a physical boundary. It is often easier to understand a physical boundary. Emotional or mental boundaries may be subtler (更微妙的). ____37____
Emotional boundaries are related to our feelings and how something or someone’s behavior affects us. For example, if a boss treats you disrespectfully by yelling at you or a colleague frequently interrupts you in meetings, you are likely to feel hurt, embarrassed, and perhaps angry. Understandably, by having a courageous conversation with both your boss and co-worker about their behavior, the impact it has on you, and your expectations regarding future behavior, you are setting healthy emotional boundaries for yourself at work.
Sometimes we set a boundary that is a combination of both a physical and emotional one. ____38____ One example of this is being repeatedly asked to work late during the week/weekends or while on vacation. Another example is being required to see too many clients or patients to the point we feel tired at the end of the day and exhausted by Friday. Often, the above workplace demands lead to increased stress and a high potential for burnout (倦怠) over time.
Mental boundaries are related to our beliefs, values, cultural norms, ethics (道德), and standards. For example, you value a workplace culture that treats employees and clients with respect and dignity and acts ethically. After six months, you realize that company leaders are repeatedly behaving in ways not consistent with this. ____39____ Over time, this may lead to significant stress and physical symptoms within.
____40____ Boundaries serve many functions. They help protect us, clarify our responsibility, preserve our physical and emotional energy, and live our values and standards. Learning the skill of boundary setting helps empower us to prioritize our values and well-being and better manage our stress. Identifying, setting, and maintaining boundaries are skills — valuable skills that, unfortunately, we are often not taught in school or the workplace.
A.Why are boundaries important?
B.However, they are equally, if not more, important.
C.Therefore, we need to tell the difference between them.
D.Setting a boundary in the above example may be quite helpful.
E.Boundaries can be physical, mental, emotional, tangible, or intangible.
F.Your values and ethical standards don’t match with your company’s, which likely will lead to internal conflict.
G.Such boundaries often involve being asked to do more than we feel capable of for an extended period of time.

That was just beyond my wildest imagination was that fortune should bless me with a chance to realize my dream. One day, my English teacher asked me to go to her office and told me I was given an unique opportunity to take part in an English speaking competition. Hearing this, I could hardly hide my excitement, hoped to give it a shot immediately. When making preparation for the competition, I wrote my speech heart and soul. After finishing the composition, I discussed it with my teacher and got much advice on how to improve it. Under the help of my English teacher, I didn’t lose heart and that made great progress. Only then I realize that it was great beneficial to turn to teachers for help when confronted with difficulties.
