Mark asked, “Do you think they’ll let me play?” Mark’s father knew that few boys would want someone like Mark, mentally and physically disabled, on their team, but the father still approached to ask the boys if Mark could play. They exchanged glances with each other and said, “We’ll try to put him in to bat.”
Mark struggled over to the team’s bench and his father had a small tear in his eye and warmth in heart. The boys saw the father’s joy at his son being accepted.
In the bottom of the final inning, Mark was scheduled to be at bat. Everyone knew that a hit was almost impossible. The first pitch (投) came and Mark missed. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to throw the ball softly towards Mark. As the pitch came in, Mark swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher.
The pitcher could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman, but he just threw the ball right over the head of the first baseman, beyond the reach of all teammates. The audience and the players from both teams started screaming, “Mark, run to first!” Never in his life had Mark ever run that far but made it to first base, wide-eyed and shocked.
By the time Mark rounded towards second base, the smallest guy on their team, who had a chance to be the hero for his team for the first time, understood the pitcher’s intentions and he too intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third baseman’s head.
All were screaming. “Mark, run to third.” As Mark rounded third, all were on their feet, crying, “Mark, run home!” Mark ran to home, stepped on the home base and was cheered as the hero who won the game for his team. Tears rolled down the father’s cheeks.
That day, the boys from both teams helped bring true love and humanity into this world.
24.Why did Mark’s father, not expecting much, still asked if Mark could join the team?
A.Because he noticed some of the boys on the field were friendly.
B.Because he knew some of the boys on the field knew Mark well.
C.Because he understood Mark did need a feeling of being accepted.
D.Because he guessed Mark’s disability would affect the boys’ decision.
25.What does the underlined word “intentions” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A.The pitcher wanted to help Mark win the game.
B.The pitcher pretended to throw the ball high and far.
C.The pitcher looked forward to winning the game for his team.
D.The pitcher had intended to throw the ball to the first baseman.
26.Which has nothing to do with Mark’s becoming the hero for his team?
A.Some of the opposing players ran to help him.
B.The pitcher did not throw the ball to the first baseman.
C.The opposing players failed to stop his running to home.
D.The audience and the players from both teams cheered for him.
27.What is the theme of the story?
A.True human nature could be realized in the way we treat each other.

From strumming a guitar next to a campfire to entertaining guests with a piano piece at a formal dinner, being able to play a musical instrument is unquestionably rewarding. Studies comparing the mental abilities of musicians and non-musicians often show that musical training is related to small, but significant, cognitive (认知的) benefits even when other factors, such as social and economic status, are accounted for. Indeed, there is evidence that just two years of such training enhances cognition.
However, it has remained unclear whether these enhanced cognitive skills are just temporary.
It is difficult to determine if cognitive changes associated with learning how to play an instrument remain throughout a person’s lifetime. On a single day in 1947, the Scottish movement tested the intelligence of almost every 11-year-old child who attended school in the country. Researchers at Edinburgh University’s Reid School of Music realized it was not too late to ask the original participants about their musical experiences.
The researchers developed a questionnaire that collected information about lifetime musical experience. This was completed by the surviving members who returned to the study for further testing in 2018. The participants were asked how many instruments they played and what their training was like. They were also asked to record how many years of regular practice they had and what performance level they had reached. A total of 366 members provided usable information and 117 revealed that they had some degree of experience with musical instruments.
Overall, the researchers found that a significant positive relationship existed between playing an instrument and change in cognitive ability over time. More specifically, the more years and more hours of practice with an instrument that a person had, the more likely they were to show a positive cognitive change over the course of their life. Precisely why learning to play a musical instrument has these effects remains unclear. The researchers theorize that driving people to regularly use a mix of focused attention, co-ordination, auditory-motor skills and memory results in advantageous cognitive changes.
28.What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A.The significance of playing a guitar and a piano.
B.The benefits of playing a musical instrument.
C.The relationship between music and social status.
D.The difference between musicians and non-musicians.
29.What do we know about the Edinburg research?
A.It surveyed 366 participants. B.Its participants were old men or women.
C.It asked participants to play musical instruments. D.Its data explained why music affected cognition.
30.What was the result collected in the 1947 Scottish movement used as?
    A.A database. B.An example. C.A cause. D.A target.
31.What is the best title of this text?
A.Musical instruments benefit temporary cognitive ability.
B.Musical instruments lead to disadvantages in cognition.
    C.Playing a musical instrument enhances long-term cognition.
D.Playing an instrument prevents temporary cognitive changes.
    D
Fish genetically engineered(基因改造) to glow blue, green, or red under blacklight have been a big hit among aquarium lovers for years. But the fluorescent (发荧光的) pet is not restricted to glass displays anymore. The red-and-green-glowing versions, more vivid than normal zebrafish even in natural light, have escaped fish farms in southeastern Brazil and are multiplying (繁殖) in creeks in the Atlantic Forest, a new study shows. It is a rare example of a transgenic(转基因的) animal accidentally becoming established in nature, and a concern for biologists, who worry the transgenic fish could threaten the local fauna (动物群) in one of the most bio-diverse spots on the planet.
In the 2000s, companies saw the potential of the fish as pets. Trademarked as Glofish, they became the world’s first genetically engineered species to be commercially available. Now, they are one of the first to escape and thrive(兴旺) in nature. Early on, environmentalists worried about the possibility, and Glofish sales were banned in some U. S. states such as California and several countries-including Brazil. In 2014, a single Glofish was spotted in canals of Florida. But it had not multiplied, probably because native predators such as the eastern mosquitofish and the largemouth bass ate the intruder(入侵者), said the biologist who spotted the fish, Quenton Tuckett. Unlike Florida, Glofish thrived in the Brazilian creeks. In 2017 he and colleagues began to survey five creeks in three cities, finding transgenic zebrafish in all of them.
The Glofish are reproducing all year round, with a peak during the rainy season — just as native zebrafish do in Asia. But the transgenic fish seem to achieve sexual maturity earlier than their forebears, which allows them to reproduce more and spread faster. The invaders are also eating well: a diversified diet of native insects, algae, and zooplankton.
Despite Brazil’s ban on sales of the fish, stores all over the country sell them as pets. They may soon colonize other parts of the country. Tuckett says it should be “a wake-up call”. For now, the glowing fish “could be considered little weeds growing up out of the concrete”, Tuckett says, but points out that even little weeds can grow to cause a lot of damage.
    32. What is the concern of the biologists?
    A. The ecological impacts are unpredictable.
    B. The transgenic fish accidentally became established in nature.
    C. The transgenic fish could do harm to the local animals.
    D. The transgenic fish are more vivid than normal zebrafish in natural light.
    33. According to paragraph 2, what can be inferred about Glofish?
    A. They were kept as pets before the 2000s.
    B. They were prohibited from sales throughout the U. S.
    C. They were found in all of the Brazilian creeks in 2017.
    D. They didn’t thrive in Florida probably due to the local enemies.
    34. What does the underlined phrase “The invaders” in paragraph 3 refer to?
    A. The native zebrafish. B. The Glofish.
    C. The largemouth bass. D. The eastern mosquitofish.
    35. What is Tuckett’s attitude towards Glofish?
    A. Cautious. B. Ambiguous.
    C. Indifferent. D. Supportive.

How to Overcome Your Fear of Failure
People are quick to blame themselves for failure and can’t shake the perception that they had not succeeded. ___36___. Here are four steps you can take.
Redefine failure. ____37____. In other words, this is the fear of failure. By framing a situation you’re dreading (畏惧) differently before you attempt it, you may be able to avoid some stress and anxiety. If you can shift your mindset and redefine what constitutes failure and success, you are able to absorb the results of the experience more gracefully and with less anxiety than you expect.
Set approach goals. Goals can be classified as approach goals or avoidance goals. ____38____. Psychologists have found that creating approach goals, or positively reframing avoidance goals, is beneficial for well-being. When you’re dreading a tough task and expect it to be difficult and unpleasant, you may unconsciously set goals around what you don’t want to happen rather than what you do want. Research has shown that people who take on an avoidance focus become twice as mentally exhausted as the approach-focused ones.
____39____. Author and investor Tim Ferriss recommends “fear-setting”, creating a checklist of what you are afraid to do and what you fear will happen if you do it. In his Ted Talk on the subject, he shares how doing this enabled him to tackle some of his hardest challenges, resulting in some of his biggest successes.
Focus on learning. The chips aren’t always going to fall where you want them to — but if you come down to earth, you can be prepared to wring (拧,挤) the most value out of the experience, no matter the outcome. When you shift gears to focus not on your potential for failure but on what you could learn from competing at a higher level than before, ____40____ .
By rethinking your fears using the four steps above, you can come to see apprehension (恐惧) as a teacher and guide to help you achieve your most important goals.
    A. Create a “fear list”
    B. Tackle challenges bravely
    C. You may want to face your fear and push beyond it to success
    D. you would stop sweating that first attempt and see it as a stepping stone to success
    E. Behind many fears is worry about doing something wrong or not meeting expectations
F you’re stepping out of your comfort zone to take steps that will help you rise and thrive
    G. It is based on whether you are motivated by wanting to achieve a positive outcome or avoid a negative one

The day when the jobs were handed out was one of the most exciting moments for all the children in the class. It took place during the first week of the term. Every kid was given a job for which they would be responsible during the rest of that school year.
Some jobs were more interesting than others, and the children were eager to be given one of the best ones. When giving them out, the teacher took into account which pupils had been most responsible during the previous year. Rita, a kind and quiet girl, had carried out the teacher’s instructions perfectly. All the children thought Rita would be given the best job. But there was a big surprise. Each child received a normal job like preparing the computer for lessons, cleaning the blackboard, or looking after one of the pets. But Rita’s job was very different. She was given a little box containing some sand and one ant. Though the teacher insisted that this ant was very special, Rita couldn’t help feeling disappointed. With tears welling up in her eyes, she stood up and asked why she was given such an insignificant task.
The teacher hugged her, kissed her on her forehead and said, “If you can take good care of the ant, you are sure to win a reward. After all, you have to do what are apparently the smallest tasks before being given the most important ones. I believe you can make it.” Most of her classmates felt sorry for her. They said it was unfair for her.
However, Rita preferred to show the teacher her error by doing something special with that job of little interest. “I will turn this little task into something great,”Rita said to herself. So, Rita started investigating everything about her little ant, modified the little box to make it perfect for the ant and gave the ant the best food, and it ended up growing quite a bit bigger than anyone had expected.
One day in spring, the classroom door opened and in came a man, who looked very important. The teacher interrupted the class with great joy, and said, “This is Doctor Martinez, an entomologist (昆虫学家) from Florida Natural Reserve. He has something special to announce.

W: Good afternoon, I’d like to share with you about working from home. Before COVID-19, my company believed that working in the office was good for productivity. But after over a year of working from home, many of us are starting to question traditional ways of working. Our boss did some research on the issue and discovered that 80% of employees have enjoyed working from home. 42% felt that they’ve been just as productive as they were in an office, and 28% felt they were more productive at home. For me, one of the best things was not having to travel an hour to and from work each day. This meant I got more sleep, and had more time for family and hobbies. I also didn’t have many questions from co-workers, so it was easier to focus, and get more work done in less time. But there were problems, too. I felt lonely at times and having online meetings could be very upset! Worst of all, it could be difficult to stop working because I didn’t have to leave the office. In the future, I’d like a flexible approach to work from home several days a week and in the office for the rest.

根据第一段“From strumming a guitar next to a campfire to entertaining guests with a piano piece at a formal dinner, being able to play a musical instrument is unquestionably rewarding. Studies comparing the mental abilities of musicians and non-musicians often show that musical training is related to small, but significant, cognitive (认知的) benefits even when other factors, such as social and economic status, are accounted for. Indeed, there is evidence that just two years of such training enhances cognition.(从在篝火旁弹吉他到在正式晚宴上用钢琴曲招待客人,能够演奏乐器无疑是值得的。对音乐家和非音乐家的心理能力进行比较的研究通常表明,即使考虑到社会和经济地位等其他因素,音乐训练也与微小但显著的认知益处有关。事实上,有证据表明,仅仅两年的此类培训就能提高认知能力能力。)”可知,第一段主要讲述演奏乐器的好处。故选B。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段“On a single day in 1947, the Scottish movement tested the intelligence of almost every 11-year-old child who attended school in the country. 31.主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Overall, the researchers found that a significant positive relationship existed between playing an instrument and change in cognitive ability over time.

根据上文“The Glofish are reproducing all year round, with a peak during the rainy season — just as native zebrafish do in Asia. But the transgenic fish seem to achieve sexual maturity earlier than their forebears, which allows them to reproduce more and spread faster. (发光鱼全年都在繁殖,雨季是繁殖的高峰期——就像亚洲本地的斑马鱼一样。但转基因鱼似乎比它们的祖先更早达到性成熟,这使它们能够繁殖更多,传播更快)”以及划线词所在句子“The invaders are also eating well…(入侵者吃得也很好)”中的 also一词可知,the invaders指的是the transgenic fish,即斑马鱼通过基因改造而来的发光鱼Glofish。故选B。

    【详解】1.词汇积累
    品尝:have a taste of→ taste
    此外:what’s more→ besides
    各式各样的:various→ a variety of
    喜欢:like→ be fond of
Knowing that you are interested in Chinese cuisine, I would like to invite you to experience the “Chinese Food Festival” in our city and taste the traditional delicacies here.
Because I know that you are interested in Chinese cuisine, I would like to invite you to experience the “Chinese Food Festival” in our city and taste the traditional delicacies here.
1】There will be lots of famous local food then, and you can have a taste of what you like.(运用了连接代词what引导的宾语从句)
2】I believe this will definitely be a unique experience for you.
All the students looked at the doctor with curiosity. The doctor greeted the class with a satisfied look and announced. “Congratulations! Your class has been chosen to go along with me, this summer, on a journey to the tropical rainforest, where we will be investigating all kinds of insects.” At the sight of the puzzled students, he explained, “Among all the schools of this region, your class has best cared for the little ant given to you. You’ve won the competition!” Wonderful news, indeed!

Hearing the good news, the whole class was filled with joy and celebration. Everyone understood why the teacher had insisted that the ant was a special one. They thanked the teacher for thinking of entering them in the competition, and thanked Rita for having been so patient and responsible. And they also learnt that to be given the most important tasks, you have to know how to be responsible even in what are apparently the smallest tasks. And without doubt, it was Rita who was most pleased with this, having said to herself many times that she would turn the little job into something really great.
    ①宣布:announce/declare
    ②感谢:thank sb./be thankful to sb.
    ③学会:learn/acquire
    ①困惑:puzzled/confused
    ②高兴的:be pleased with/be delighted at
【点睛】[高分句型1] Your class has been chosen to go along with me, this summer, on a journey to the tropical rainforest, where we will be investigating all kinds of insects.
[高分句型2] And without doubt, it was Rita who was most pleased with this, having said to herself many times that she would turn the little job into something really great.
