An increasing number of students worldwide are considering studying abroad. The application process varies from country to country. If you’re looking for a university with a strong international outlook but feel swept over by all the application options, here is some guidance to get you started.

    UK

International students must apply to universities in the UK through a system known as Ucas. This system allows students to apply to up to five universities with just one application. It costs £20 for a single choice or £25 for more than one choice.

The application consists of a series of questions to determine the student’s schooling and predicted grades. The biggest part of the application form is the personal statement, in which applicants should describe their personal interests and related experiences.

    Switzerland

Switzerland has four official languages and is bordered by five countries so it is no surprise that its universities are among the most international in the world. International applicants may need to take an entrance exam if they have a foreign school certificate, and must also prove that they have a good grasp of the French language, usually through taking a language exam. The full application costs 50 Swiss Francs for a holder of a Swiss diploma and 150 Swiss Francs for holders of foreign diplomas.

    Canada

International applicants have to write up a personal profile as part of their application, which is very similar to the personal statement required for a UK university application. Students will also have to prove their English-language competency—there are nine ways to meet the English Language Admission Standard, which are listed on many university websites.

    Singapore

The process of applying to a Singaporean university is very much alike, but overseas students may be delighted to find that the domestic applicants have to cover the same procedures: filling out an online application form and submit identification documents, supporting documents and an application fee of S$20.

    1. Which country requires international applicants know French well?

    A. UK.        B. Switzerland.          C. Canada.       D. Singapore.

    2. What part of the application is similar between the UK and Canada?

     A. The application system.             B. The number of universities.

       C. The application cost.           D. The personal statement.

    3. What’s special about the application process in Singapore?

    A. Applicants need to pay a lot.             B. It is much simpler than elsewhere.

    C. It’s no different for native students.          D. The competition is even more fierce.

Moving can be daunting - whether it's to a new city or an entirely new country. The good news? Volunteering can be a great way to settle into a new community, meet people, and learn valuable skills.

Kajal Patil moved to the United States from India in February 2017. Having previously volunteered for two years as an assistant yoga teacher in her home country, Kajal was enthusiastic about volunteering and began looking for volunteer opportunities that match her interests. She was drawn to a volunteer opportunity to review applications on behalf of the Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI), which aims to help Latin American and Caribbean business to bring positive changes to their societies and contribute more fully to economic development, prosperity and security in those places.

After connecting with the opportunity and successfully completing the application process, Kajal got to work. Her role involved reviewing 44 in-depth applications from potential candidates across Latin America and the Caribbean for a four-week fellowship in the US. She was responsible for describing the business ideas presented by these candidates, assessing the social impact of their businesses, and determining the strength of candidates to carry out their plans. With almost 4,000 applicants in 2017, volunteers like Kajal were important members of the YLAI team.

Kajal says that this volunteer opportunity super-charged her existing skills, while helping her build new ones such as time management, business analysis, decision-making, planning, and presenting.

She is now looking for her next volunteer opportunity and reflects positively on her experience with YLAI. "A new country brings in a lot of new experiences and volunteering helped me to settle into a new environment,"  adds Kajal. “By helping others, I felt needed in society. It promoted my confidence, and other people benefited too. Volunteering is a great opportunity to improve yourself others, and the whole society.”

Whether you recently moved to a new place or are looking to expand your influence on your current community, find a volunteer opportunity to empower yourself, and others.

    4. What do we know about Kajal?

    A. She is an experienced volunteer.           B. She received education in the U.S.

    C. She founded a volunteer organization.       D. She worked as a professional yoga teacher.

    5. What was included in Kajal's voluntary work for YLAI?

    A. Carrying out the selected business plans.   B. Assessing the applications of candidates.

    C. Helping candidates think up business ideas. D. Simplifying candidates" application process.

    6. What does Kajal think of volunteering?

    A. It contributes to local economy.          B. It focuses on skills development.

Why do Americans struggle with watching their weight, while the French, who consume rich food, continue to stay thin? Now a study by Cornell University suggests how lifestyles and decisions about eating may affect weight. Researchers conclude that the French tend to stop eating when they feel full. However, Americans tend to stop when their plate is empty or their favorite TV show is over.

According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, a health expert, the French see eating as an important part of their lifestyle. They enjoy food and therefore spend a fairly long time at the table, while Americans see eating as something to be squeezed(挤压) between the other daily activities. Mercola believes Americans lose the ability to sense when they are actually full. So they keep eating long after the French would have stopped. In addition, he points out that Americans drive to huge supermarkets to buy canned(灌装) and frozen foods for the week. The French, instead, tend to shop daily, walking to small shops and farmers’ markets where they have a choice of fresh fruits, vegetables, and eggs as well as high-quality meats for each meal.

After a visit to the United States, Mireille Guiliano, author of French Women Don’t Get Fat, decided to write about the importance of knowing when to stop rather than suggesting how to avoid food. Today she continues to stay slim and rarely(很少地) goes to the gym.

In spite of all these differences, evidence shows that recent lifestyle changes may be affecting French eating habits. Today the rate of obesity(肥胖)—or extreme overweight—among adults is only 6%. However, as American fast food gains acceptance(认可) and the young decline older traditions, the obesity rate among French children has reached 17%—and is growing.

    1. According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, in what way are the French different from Americans?

AThey can’t sense when actually full.

BThey regard eating as a key part of their lifestyle.

CThey usually eat too much canned and frozen food.

DThey go shopping at huge supermarkets more frequently.

9On how to stay slim, Mireille Guiliano probably agrees that____________.

Aone has to go to the gym every day

Bone has to know how to eat much food

Cwhen eating, one should know when to stop

Dwhen eating, one has to empty his plate every time

10The underlined word “decline” in the last paragraph probably means        .

    Adefend         Btrace            Ccite            Drefuse

11The text is mainly about the relationship between____________.

Alifestyle and obesity            Bchildren and adults

Cfast food and overweight        DAmericans and the French

With almost all big employers in the United States now using artificial intelligence (AI) and automation in their hiring processes, the public is considering some urgent questions: How can you prevent discrimination in hiring when a machine is keeping the discrimination? What kind of methods might help?

Some 83% of employers, including 99% of Fortune 500 companies, now use some form of automated tools as part of their hiring process, said the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s (EEOC) chair Charlotte Burrows at a hearing on Tuesday. She said everyone needs to speak up on the debate over these technologies. “The risks are simply too high to leave this topic just to the experts. ”

Last year, the EEOC issued some guidance around the use of cutting-edge hiring tools, noting many of their shortcomings. The agency found that resume (简历) scanners that prioritize keywords and programs that evaluate a candidate’s facial expressions and speech patterns in video interviews can create discrimination. Take, for example, a video interview that analyzes an applicant’s speech patterns to determine their ability to solve problems. A person with a speech problem might score low and automatically be screened out. The problem will be for the EEOC to root out discrimination or stop it from taking place.

The EEOC is considering the most appropriate ways to handle the problem. It’s agreed that inspections are necessary to ensure that the software used by companies avoids intentional or unintentional discrimination. But who would conduct those inspections is a more challenging question. Each option presents risks, Burrows pointed out. A third party may turn a blind eye to its clients, while a government-led inspection could potentially stop innovation.

In previous remarks, Burrows has noted the great potential that AI decision-making tools have to improve the lives of Americans, but only when used properly. “We must work to ensure that these new technologies do not become a high-tech pathway to discrimination,” she said.

    12. What does Burrows suggest people do?

    A. Make their own voice heard.             B Follow the experts’ suggestions.

    C. Stop using AI in hiring processes.         D. Watch debates about technologies.

    13. How might programs in video interviews select employees?

    A. By scanning keywords.                 B. By evaluating resumes.

    C. By analyzing personalities.              D. By interpreting speech patterns.

    14. What is a possible consequence of third-party inspections?

    A. High expense.                         B. Unfair results.

    C. Age discrimination.                     D. Innovation interruption.

    15. What is Burrows’ attitude to AI decision-making tools?

    A. Favorable.        B. Disapproving.        C. Objective.           D. Doubtful.

    第二节(满分25分)

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One afternoon after school, Mary and her brother, Keith, were eating at a cafe near their home. That afternoon, they had to share their table with another person, a young lady in her twenties. After eating, she went to the restroom. Without realizing it, she had left her cellphone on the table. Five minutes later, she came out and walked out of the cafe without looking back.

Mary saw the cellphone on the table. She quickly told Keith, “Keith, the girl left behind her cellphone.”

Keith looked at the cellphone. It took his breath away. It was one of the latest models on the market. Keith had always wanted a cellphone. But his parents had told him, “You don’t need one. You can always use the house phone.”

He stared at it for some minutes. Then he said slowly, pausing on every word, “I want to take the cellphone.”

Mary could not believe her ears. She merely stared at her brother. “You can’t! What if the owner comes to look for it

Having made the decision, Keith quickly grabbed the cellphone and put it in his schoolbag. Then, he took Mary’s hand and led her out of the cafe quickly.

Once back home, Keith locked his house door with trembling hands. Inside his room, he took out the piece of beauty. Oh, he liked it so much. Now he had his own cellphone. Soon, he was polishing it happily.

But Mary told him, “Keith, you cannot keep the cellphone. What will you tell Father about this? He will ask you how you got the cellphone.'

Keith said quickly, “I will say a friend has lent it to me.”

Mary said, “Now you are lying too.” Oh dear! When had Keith turned so dishonest?

Then Mary saw a house phone number on the plastic cover of the cellphone. “This is the girl's phone number. Why don't we just call this numberWe will talk to her and ask her to come and take back her cellphone.” She was trying to talk some sense into him.

    注意:续写词数应为150左右
