When I turned twelve, I worked in summer at my father’s small brick cleaning business. I remember the harsh acid smell of the cleaning solution, the dim bulb light reflecting the busy figures and the scraping sound of stiff iron brushes against rough brick. It was tempting to have your job just finished. But anybody who worked for Thomas Kahoon had to meet his standards, and that included me. If I messed up, he made me stay late until I got it right. My father wasn’t being mean. He demanded the exact same of himself. Every brick he cleaned on the house stood out like a red jewel in a white setting. It was his signature.
In 1970, when I was twenty, I was to get married. I moved out of my parent’s modest place into a housing project. Drugs and gang violence were just beginning to damage the projects. Some of my friends went to jail. Some were killed. My wife Verllen, was 18, and nobody gave our marriage a chance. But we believed in each other. And our faith made us strong.
When we married, I worked as a stock clerk at Southwest Super Food. It was hard, tedious work. Each Friday night a truck came, with cases of food that had to be unloaded, priced and placed on shelves. Most of stock clerks try to get Friday night off. But I was always ready to work. By Saturday morning, all the cans and jars in my aisle were placed with a label facing smartly out, like a line of soldiers on review. That was my signature. I took pride in a job nobody wanted.
Years past since I established my belief in doing the job, influenced profoundly by my father’s persistence and standards. In my mind, it has become a tradition I hope this generation and the generations behind can keep to and follow.

Facebook has published its mind-reading wrist device and an augmented reality (增强现实) keyboard with future hardware products. The company’s Facebook Reality Labs division showed off the technologies on a virtual call with members of the media. Executives from the division talked about the technologies while videos of the projects were played for audience.
The wrist device is capable of reading neurological (神经系统的) signals sent from aw’s brain down to his or her hand. It could read these signals to get a sense of what a user wants to do and copy the action in a virtual or augmented reality environment. “You actually have more of your brain dedicated to controlling your wrist than any other part of your body.” said TR Reardon, director of research science at Facebook Reality Labs.
The Facebook researchers demonstrated “force” actions where a user could use his or her fingers in real life to hold and control virtual, far-away objects in augmented reality. The name of the action is a reference to Star Wars where certain characters can use “force” to control and move people or objects that are far away from them.
Additionally, the company demonstrated electromyography wristbands (机电腕带) that users could wear to type on any surface as though they were typing on a physical keyboard. Although there is no keyboard, the wristbands would register the intention of a user’s finger stroke (挥笔动作) and note down the letters and words. .
Facebook’s development of these technologies comes as the company prepares to release its first smart glasses this year. That device will be Ray-Ban glasses. Unlike smartphones, which rely on touchscreens, there is no current obvious input mechanism for smart glasses.
Asked how soon these technologies may make their way to the public, Facebook CTO Mike Schroepfer said they are in the early stages of development and no doubt will bring much convenience to our future life.
28. Where did Facebook demonstrate the new technologies?
A. At a press conference
B. In a research paper
C.On a virtual call
D. In an IT magazine
29. What can we learn from the passage?
A. There is no obvious input mechanism for Facebook’s smart glasses.
B. Electromyography wristbands are connected to a physical keyboard.
C. The wrist device can only read neurological signals sent from a user’s brain.
D. These technologies have been put on the market.
30. What’s Mike Schroepfer’s attitude to the future of these technologies?
A. Tolerant B. Critical C. Hopeful D. Indifferent
31. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Facebook and Its Goal
B. Facebook, a Tech-company
C. Facebook’s New Technologies
D. Facebook and Its Development

Housing ranks high among the numerous challenges that still need to be overcome before humans can colonize(征服) Mars. The brave pioneers that make the six-month voyage to the Red Planet will need a place to live in as soon as they land. While the best solution would be to have the structures ready before they get there, it has so far been a challenge given that most construction robots have never made it out of the laboratory. Now, there may be a bit of hope thanks to Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s newly revealed Digital Construction Platform (DCP).
The DCP comprises a double arm system that is fitted on a tracked vehicle. As the larger arm moves, the smaller, precision motor robotic arm builds the structure by shooting out the necessary construction material, ranging from insulation foam(绝缘泡沫) to concrete. The team of researchers led by Ph. D. Steven Keating say that unlike other 3-D printers that are limited to building objects that fit within their overall enclosure, DCP’s free moving systems can be used to construct structures of any size.
The team recently demonstrated the DCP’s building skills on an empty field in Mountain View, CA. The robot began by creating a mold with expanding foam that hardens when dry. It then constructed the building, layer by layer, using sensors to raise itself higher as it progressed. The final product was a sturdy “home” that had 50-foot diameter walls and a 12-foot high roof with room for essentials like electricity wires and water pipes to be inserted inside. Even more impressive? It took a mere 14 hours to “print”!
The researchers’ next plan is to make the DCP smart enough to analyze the environment where the structure is going to be built and determine the material densities best suited for the area. However, that’s not even the best part. Future DCP models are going to be solar-powered, autonomous, and, most importantly, capable of sourcing construction components from its surroundings. This means the robot can be sent to remote, disaster-stricken areas, and perhaps even to Mars, to build shelters using whatever material is available.
32. What do we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Housing pioneers on Mars is a reality.
B. Colonizing Mars is out of the question.
C. Finding a liveable place on Mars is a top priority.
D.Building structures on Mars is in the testing phases.
33. How does the DCP differ from other 3-D printers?
A. It consumes less time.
B. It can build more diverse structures.
C. It is more environmentally friendly.
D. It comes in more different sizes.
34. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. The successful case of the DCP.
B. The working principle of the DCP.
C. The instructions of using the DCP.
D. The limitation of the DCP’s function.
35. What might be the biggest highlight of future DCP ?
A. Being powered by solar.
B. Building shelters anywhere.
C. Collecting building materials on site.
D. Analyzing building material densities.

What It Means to Serve
I didn’t continue college after graduation. I moved out of my family. With little work experience, I served as a waitress. But during the five years’ labor, I found myself burning calories running about only for a tip.
I had had enough so I moved to a smaller town hoping to pursue a college degree. I promised I would never serve people again - at least not in such way. It was time to serve myself. Luckily, I received a position as an afterschool program tutor at a local middle school, with the added benefit of completing English education degree. I had the opportunity to go big! The kid would need me - a role model and a trustworthy friend, I believed.
But my first day was welcomed by the students’ indifference (冷漠). The desks were messy and the whole room smelled of dirty gym socks. My excitement began to die down. I doubted whether the new job was a mistake. The playground activity was deafening while homework time was not much better. After my repeated persistence, they finally turned off the playground mode. But just a few minutes passed when I noticed two kids quarreling in the corner.
I supposed it was another little incident but one kid named Jeremy bothered me. He shouted at me for coming at him. And when I asked them to return to their seats, he slammed (用力摔) his backpack and grew mad as I tried to urge him to take the right attitude. “I don’t like you, homework and this afterschool program! All you guys do is yell at me. I’m never coming back.” he walked out of the classroom, slamming the door.
Naturally, I was so frustrated (挫败的). I wondered why I am here. Most kids disrespected me! I paused to take a deep breath. Then suddenly I thought to myself, “You said you would never serve people again, but you don’t understand what these kids really need.” At that moment, I remembered my middle-school life. I always had a poor attitude, never did my schoolwork, repeatedly got into fights, and disrespected my elders.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Realizing I was not different, I walked out into the hall and caught up with Jeremy.
At that moment my heart broke for this boy and his family life.
