Lisa Holman was a 45-year-old mother. One night, she told her family that she would visit and get dinner with one of her old friends in the area of Helena, Alabama. Helena was usually only about a half an hour’s drive from her house where she lived in Chelsea, Alabama.
When Lisa hadn’t returned home by 11 pm, the family started to get a bit worried because Lisa rarely stayed out that late. They called Lisa’s phone but didn’t get any answer. Next they texted her saying please call back as soon as she saw the text but never heard back. Her family knew that something wrong might have happened to Lisa.
The family then reached out to Lisa’s friend with whom she had dinner that evening. When they got in contact with her, she was surprised that Lisa had not come home yet. According to Lisa’s friend, she hadn’t heard anything from Lisa and just assumed that she had gotten home safely after she left to drive home at around 9 pm. Lisa left in fine spirits and was totally normal. She was not drunk or under the influence of anything so there was no concern for her safety of going home alone.
The family sat up all night wondering what was happening and their biggest fear began to sink in. They thought about calling the police that evening but the police typically don’t define a person missing unless there is no contact for 24 hours so all the family could do was sit home and wait.
It was a very long night for the whole family. The family sat up all night pondering if something happened to her. Was she kidnapped? Who would want to hurt her?
Early the next morning, Lisa’s sister Kathy, and Lisa’s 17-year-old son, Jackson couldn’t sit around waiting any longer and decided to go looking for Lisa.

    2.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was thirty years ago, and I was twenty years old as a new teacher in an elementary school in Toronto, Canada. My class was made up of thirty-eight kids, one of them named Mike. Mike was a street kid. He never knew his parents and lived with an uncaring grandmother. His clothing was in need of repair. He was ten years old and looked in bad health. Like most new, young teachers, I was full of enthusiasm and wanted to make a difference. I decided to reach out to help the kid in need.
So it was that early in September that my special “foster father(养父)” relationship with Mike began with the permission of his grandmother. I became the only parent figure he ever had. Each day, I’d take him for meals. I showed him how to repair clothes. I taught him a lot of new skills like using a computer, taking photos and knowing about nature. Mike would then help me teach the rest of the class these skills. We all had a lot of fun, and a kind of un-spoken trust began to build up between us. Surprisingly, he appeared eager to join in this new father-son relationship.
Early in our special relationship, Mike told me his dream. Most of the kids in the class wanted to be doctors, musicians, teachers or some such things, but not Mike. “I want to be a gangster(土匪), Mr. Kowalchuk!” he said. This was no joke—this was his wish, and he was most serious about it.
I believe all children have a gift. Everyone has the same chance to be the best person they can be. I realized this boy was smart, and that with a little love, attention, understanding, guidance and encouragement, he could probably achieve whatever he put his mind to. I explained to him that a good gangster had to read a large number of books on law in the law library and know criminal law(刑法) well like an excellent lawyer(律师). His young mind was eager and interested.

    3.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
During summer vacation when I was twelve, a sawmill (锯木厂) was operating in the woods near our farm. Early each morning, I’d watch the men cut down big trees, saw them into logs, and deliver the logs to the mill.
The logs were dragged by a team of horses named Jack and Billy. They were gentle, and I petted them every chance I got.
One day, Mr. David, the mill owner, said he’d pay me 15 cents a day to bring fresh water to his men. In 1942, that was a lot of money! I said yes.
One afternoon when Jack and Billy were pulling a log up to the mill, a stick injured Jack’s right front hoof (蹄). After Mr. David removed the stick, the horse driver said that the foot should be doctored. But Mr. David said he didn’t have time for that. He said if the horse couldn’t earn his keep, he’d get one that could.
I felt sick inside. Jack and Billy were my best friends! I couldn’t stop thinking about Jack’s foot and what Mr. David had said.
For the rest of the day the team pulled logs from the woods. By nightfall, Jack was limping badly. Mr. David told his crew that the mill would be closed for three days because he’d be away for the Fourth of July. He offered to pay me a dollar to feed and water the horses while he was gone. I quickly agreed.
The next morning, I rode my bike to Mr. David’s barn. I wanted to look at Jack’s hoof. I reached down and grabbed the hair on the back of his leg, as I’d seen Mr. David do, and Jack lifted up his foot so I could see.
The part inside of the big iron shoe looked red and mushy (烂糊的).
I didn’t know anything about medicine, and Mr. David said he wouldn’t pay for a doctor. But if he didn’t earn his keep, Mr. David would get rid of him. But what could I do?
    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

I was born in a small village in the mountainous province of Lao Cai in Vietnam. In my poverty-stricken small village, girls hardly had the chance to complete their education. But I was lucky. I was born into a family where my parents supported our education. As one of the very few families that could afford all children to continue to study till high school, my parents faced a lot of negative opinions from our neighbors.
I was not always there for the criticism, however, as I lived in boarding schools for ethnic minority (少数民族) children. There were a lot of girls and boys from different ethnic groups in our schools. In these second homes, I learned from teachers and friends and most importantly, I was trained to live independently and with confidence. And this gave me the motivation to try harder every day.
In 2017, I came to Hanoi, the capital city, as a first-year student at the University of Languages and International Studies. It was a life-changing experience for me. I was thrilled at the fact that the students here were so bright and brilliant. The world became much bigger for me — far different from my small town. “Where are you from? Are you an ethnic minority?” Those were the frequent questions I had from my classmates at the beginning. At first, I was afraid of those questions and then I realized that when I began to talk openly about my culture, I was warmly received.
It goes without saying that confidence grows in a nurturing (滋养的) environment. Again, I found myself lucky. Slowly I started to engage in school activities and after some time, I volunteered for community activities.
    注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
In 2019, I became the leader of a students’ group working on voluntary projects for our ethnic community.

I was sorting through old photos with my mother, looking for a specific picture of my father. I’d recently gotten a scanner and was in the process of digitizing our family pictures.
“Where on earth is that picture of Mumpsy and Dad?” I asked. I’d seen the picture in a frame at my grandma Virgie’s house when I was a child. It showed my father as a boy, in a suit, holding his beloved Boston terrier (波士顿狗), Mumpsy. It was one of my favorite pictures of him, and the only one I hadn’t found yet.
“Maybe Jean has it,” said Mom. “We could ask her.”
I looked at Mom as if she had three eyes. She could not be serious!
Grandma Virgie had had two sons, Dad and Uncle Ralph, who was married to Jean. Mom and Jean had always had a difficult relationship. Jean would say mean and unfavorable things to Mom while Mom tried to rise above it. Grandma Virgie wanted to help but there wasn’t much she could do. After Grandma passed away, Uncle Ralph’s family stayed in the house and took care of what Grandma left. My parents bought a new house and we moved out. As Mom and Aunt Jean was not on good terms, they purposely broke contact with each other.
With that, any connection we had with Uncle Ralph and Aunt Jean fell apart, and our big family split in two. Both my dad and my uncle were dead now. Mom and I had no contact with Jean.
Yet here was Mom, proposing to reach out to Jean nearly 30 years later.
“I’m in my eighties,” Mom said with a shrug. “Jean’s just a little younger. Neither of us has many years left. Why not give it a try?”
    I couldn’t argue with that.

Chloe was 83 years old and lived by the ocean shore in a big beautiful house. She wished her son Steve would visit her, even if for only a day. Of course, the young man had a family of his own now, a darling little daughter Eva, and a business to take care of. Steve got on video calls with Chloe every other day. However, Chloe thought of her son and granddaughter, wishing she was with them. One day, Chloe heard sounds from the neighboring house. Chloe looked through the window and was delighted to see that she had new neighbors.
One morning, when Chloe woke up and walked along the shore, she heard the sounds of water being splashed and the sound of children laughing wildly. She followed the sound and was concerned on finding the twins from the neighboring house standing knee deep in ocean water. Something didn’t feel right. “Why would anyone leave their kids unattended on the shore?” Chloe thought. She grabbed the kids’ hands and walked them to their home. As Chloe opened the door, she found the young mother lying unconscious on the kitchen floor. Chloe didn’t waste a second in calling 911.
The first responders managed to revive (恢复) her consciousness on the spot. “My boys! Ralph! Ray!” the woman cried out to her kids as the ambulance took her away. Chloe said, “Don’t worry. Everything will be alright. I’ll take care of your sweet boys.” She kept her promise and looked after the kids like a grandmother. She took Ralph and Ray in and let them sleep in the bedroom that was specially made for her granddaughter Eva.
It was during these days that she knew that the boys’ father died of illness. Chloe knew that the neighbor, Phoebe, had been trying to make ends meet by selling sweaters and socks that she knit. Looking at Phoebe’s children eat and drink with such joy, she realized how much she longed to see her little Eva. By the time Phoebe came home from the hospital, the kids had already started calling Chloe “Grandma”.

    7.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was eleven years old, I moved to Tampa, Florida. My parents traveled for a living, so Aunt Emily took care of me while they were away. One rainy morning, there was an old lady who was dressed in a bright orange coat carrying a rubbish bag and a stick. “What’s that old lady doing?” I asked Emily, pointing out of the window to the street in front of the house.
Hearing my question, Emily answered, “She’s picking up rubbish around here for fun.” “Oh,” I answered. “Interesting... Why would someone think picking up rubbish is fun?” For a long time, I often saw that old lady—rain or shine—on my way to school. In the beginning, I thought she was crazy to pick up rubbish. However, I finally smiled and waved at her each time I saw her.
Later, when I moved to college, I’d see rubbish in the grass and feel really angry about it. I’d think, “Why isn’t anyone picking up rubbish? People are so unconcerned!” But shortly after that, I said to myself, “Why do I think picking up rubbish is someone else’s duty?” And I couldn’t walk past trash without feeling guilty (内疚的).
So while walking in the college, I began picking up rubbish and made sure the campus was in better shape than I previously found it. My behavior influenced some students. They started to help me out.
Like me, they also picked up rubbish whenever they noticed it. And our college became more beautiful. Seeing that, I began to think, “If I can pick up rubbish outside the college—in other places of the town, it may make a big difference to the town.”
But picking up rubbish in front of many people outside the college needs courage. It could be embarrassing. But it was the right thing to do. I decided to try it.
    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
So one day I called up all my courage and collected rubbish on a nearby street.

    8.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I ran after the train, shouting, “Hey mister, can’t you see me?” It was hopeless, as no conductor is going to slow down for a 60-year-old man who got to the station several minutes late. They absolutely didn’t know how important that day, that train ride was to me! I was on my way to an interview for what could have been the opportunity of a lifetime.
I threw both my hat and my art case down in depression, and sat down on the nearest chair, wiping (擦掉) the sweat from my face and breathing heavily. I would have to wait a whole day for the next train, and by then my appointment with the gallery owner would have given up on me. Perhaps it was for the best. It was, after all, the first time in 40 years anyone had shown such an interest in my art. Maybe if the gallery owner had seen all my paintings, he would have changed his mind about offering me space on his walls.
Disappointment filled my soul. Should I dial the gallery and get an interview on a different day? But Pierre Gianni was the owner of the most well-known gallery in New York City. Why would he give a rare second chance to an elderly nobody when he had the newest, coolest young artists to choose from?
Come to think of it, perhaps these insecurities were the very reason I had never been offered a show before. I was too afraid to try. I found countless excuses not to offer my work up to be seen and perhaps criticized. I told myself it would hurt too much if I failed, but the truth was that I had never tried.
Finally, I gathered all my courage to dial the gallery, only to find my antique cell phone had broken down. It was at the very moment that I was in total despair and decided to go home.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;

So recently I got goosebumps. It was Friday,November 17. I was so nervous since it was the end of the week and we had planned to go out and eat for dinner. I went school like it was a normal day, but little did I know there was a shock waiting for me at school.
There’s this boy in my band,Spanish and math class. His name was Nathan. I never really liked him since he was a slowpoke (迟钝的人). He didn’t have any friends at all. He always sat alone at the lunch table with his phone listening to music. People just walked past him without caring. And in class whenever he was asked a question, he would take a long time to answer it. The whole class would get annoyed and whenever he got an answer wrong, the whole class would laugh. I didn’t know why but I didn’t care enough to know.
On November 17, I walked into band class and was ready to play my flute. Mr. Kohler began the class. We played music for a little while then he asked us to tune our instruments. I saw Nathan, he was just walking around like usual looking for something. There is nothing surprising about that, he does that in every class. He doesn’t just sit the whole class period, he walks around looking for Kleenex or a new reed (簧片) for his instrument. He plays clarinet by the way.
So then Mr. Kohler asked a question to the class: “Who in here can tell what note it is just by hearing the pitch (音高)?”
Nobody raised their hands except for Nathan. The moment I saw him, I laughed but not out loud. I thought he couldn’t do anything properly. How could he possibly guess the note when the pitch is played?
Mr. Kohler even laughed a little and then told Nathan, “Come here buddy.”Nathan came and stood in front of the class. Mr. Kohler had a tuner and he played a pitch and asked Nathan to guess the pitch.
    Nathan said, “E flat.”

Emma was very excited Today was the championship baseball game! The winners would all get trophies(奖杯) and be the number one players in the town. Emma decided to bring home a trophy to put on her shelf. She had never won a trophy before.
She put on her red uniform and pulled her hair through the back of her baseball cap. She picked up her gloves and looked in the mirror. “I hope I get a hit today,” she said to herself.
On the way to the field, Emma felt nervous.
“Are you feeling OK, Emma?” her mother asked.
“I really don’t want to strike out(三击不中出局),” Emma said.
“Just keep your eye on the ball and don’t feel afraid. You can do it,” Emma’s mother said.
Emma was a great hitter in practice, but she had never hit a ball during a game. She always struck out.
When the game started, Emma cheered loudly for her friends. She caught a fly ball in the Outfield, and everyone cheered for her. Emma struck out when it was her turn to hit the ball, but her team was doing well.
The game was tied(平局), and it was her team’s last chance to score. The team’s coach encouraged, “Believe in yourselves, and you are the best.” Frankie was up first, and he hit the ball hard to get on base(垒). Next up was Henry, but he struck out. Kara hit the ball, but she was tagged out at first base. Frankie was able to run to third. That meant he could score and win the game if the next batter(击球手) got a good hit. Emma was the team’s last hope.

    1. In the beginning, they saw nothing that stood out when they were driving. They wondered if this was a big waste of time. But a few minutes later, Jackson spotted what looked like a car. The car looked as if it had crashed off the side of the road, so he told his aunt to pull over. Jackson and Kathy began calling out Lisa’s name in the hope that they would hear a response. However, they heard nothing so they decided to go in the woods.
As they got closer, they realized it was Lisa’s car. However, they didn’t find Lisa in the car. Based on the condition of Lisa’s car, Kathy thought it was a bad crash. Therefore, they started looking around the area for Lisa thinking she might have been thrown out of the car on impact. Suddenly, Jackson found a woman lying on the ground nearby. It turned out to be Lisa, but she had no consciousness. They called 911 immediately, and Lisa was sent to the hospital a few minutes later. Fortunately, Lisa was not seriously injured and recovered well in hospital.

If he wanted to be a “gangster”, I would do something to help him. One Saturday morning, I took him to the law library in our town. When he walked in, he was amazed by the huge collection in the library and was soon lost in it. That was how we spent each Saturday morning in the following years. He became interested in learning laws. As he grew up to a senior high school student, he told me that his dream was not to be a gangster, but a famous lawyer. I was glad that he had his real dream for his life.
Years later, I got married and started a new life in another city. Sadly, I lost touch with Mike, but I often thought of him, wondering what his life was like in all these years. Then, one day I received a call, “Mr. Kowalchuk, I’m Mike. I really miss you.” Shocked, my eyes filled up with tears. I learned about his great change, from a street kid, who dreamed of becoming a gangster, to a famous lawyer in Canada. “I really appreciate your love,” Mike said. I was really very proud of him! As a teacher, I really made a difference to him.

3.At my house, I saw our neighbor, Mr. Sherman who raised horses and knew how to care for them. I told him all about Jack, and he said he’d take a look at the injured hoof. When we got to the barn, Mr. Sherman told me to get a foot tub of warm water. He washed Jack’s hoof with a brush, then put it into the tub of water to soak. We found a large can of animal salve, which Mr. Sherman put on the wound. He said that Jack’s foot would be well in a few days. I had been trying to act like a grown-up, but in my excitement I gave Mr. Sherman a big hug to thank him.
The morning when Mr. David returned, I jumped on my bike to the mill. Just as I arrived, the team was dragging a big log from the woods. Jack pulled with all his might, and he wasn’t limping! When the team stopped, I dropped my bike and ran down to the horses. I wrapped my arms around Jack’s big head and hugged him while Billy laid his nose on my shoulder. At that moment, I was filled with happiness. I knew that my friend wouldn’t have to be sent away.

In 2019, I became the leader of a students’ group working on voluntary projects for our ethnic community. In the same year, I organized a free-of-charge English class for the children in my village and the neighborhood. The number of kids going to the class grew instantly to over 100. Most of them were in primary school and learning a foreign language was a luxury for them. Besides, bringing our unique cultures to the outside world was also a motivation for me when engaging young people in projects that saw us travel to learn and gain insights of the remote heritages.
Now I am working as a teaching assistant in an international primary school. I am proud to be the only ethnic minority employee there. I am also proud to be different in my effort to be the better version of myself every day. My wish for ethnic minority children and young people like me is to live in an inclusive world where dreams do not stop at the gate of our villages but travel as far as they should go.

5.Mom looked up Jean in the dusty phonebook and decided to call her. Unexpectedly, Jean answered the call. Jean said she had inherited boxes and boxes of Grandma Virgie’s old photos, but they weren’t organized or labeled, so Jean invited Mom over to help her look for the picture of Dad and Mumpsy. Mom agreed. They set a date for a few days later. But I was still a little worried. “If she acts the way she used to, I’ll turn right around and leave,” she promised me right before she left for Jean’s house.
I thought Mom would be back in an hour or so, but she didn’t return until close to dinner. After she came back she told me what happened. She and Jean said Hi and then sat down at the kitchen table to look through photos. After a while, Jean apologized for the way she’d behaved years before. Then Jean took out a photo album of Virgie’s and suddenly the picture of Dad and Mumpsy caught their eyes. They both laughed. After Mom’s visit, Aunt Jean, Mom and I started getting together regularly. We all have framed copies of that picture of Dad and Mumpsy for it’s a reminder of how we were drawn back together as a family.

Chloe hugged her and said there was no need to feel indebted to her. “Your kids have ended up making room in my old heart. This house is yours as much as it is mine, darling,” Chloe said. That was the beginning of a lifelong friendship between Chloe and Phoebe. Chloe looked after the kids while Phoebe went to a new job she had found, and Phoebe took care of Chloe like her own mother.
One Thanksgiving, when Chloe and the Phoebes were talking, Chloe’s door was knocked. It was her son Steve and her granddaughter, Eva! Steve thought it would come as a surprise for his mother. However, Steve was speechless, looking at the amount of joy and love around the house. Seeing his mother happier than she had been in years, Steve felt a little guilty for not giving her this happiness sooner. 7.So one day I called up all my courage and collected rubbish on a nearby street. Some people watched me with a strange look that seemed to say I was crazy. And suddenly, I remembered that old lady, who often picked up rubbish years ago. The interesting thing was that I was acting just like her! As strange as it might seem, picking up rubbish is kind of fun for me! Gradually, many people realized I was volunteering to help make our town clean. They praised me and thanked me. Then I decided to encourage more students to do this in the town.
I thought if more students took part in the voluntary activity, things would be much better. We bought each student a bright orange coat with words on it: Let’s make our town cleaner! And we took time to not only pick up rubbish but also sort through it and recycle it. Something amazing happened—the strangers around us helped us out too! I thought to myself, “The old lady made all this happen; she made a big difference in my life.”

I wanted to express my heartfelt gratitude to him but words got stuck in my throat. Taking the phone he passed to me, I managed to collect myself and plucked up my courage to dial Pierre. Mr. Kohler played 3 pitches. “G, A flat, E sharp.” Nathan said. “Good job, go back to your seat.” Mr. Kohler said. At that moment I got shocked.
To our surprise, he guessed all the pitches correctly. How did he do that? I said to myself. That day I realized that I shouldn’t judge people based on little things I see. I need to see the great things people can do. From that day on I had a different opinion on Nathan. I forgot about all the things he was bad at and focused on the things he was good at. Whenever I saw him, I just said to myself, “That’s the guy that impressed me. That’s the guy who is musically talented.”
