For the most part, Hank, a two-year-old tan-and-white rescue cat, is a homebody - and for good reason. The one time he got out his yard in Washington. DC, he managed to get stuck in a 12-metre-tall tree for two days with no food or water.
Hank’s big adventure started last November 6. Delores Bushong his 75-year-old owner, had just returned from a farmers market when she realized Hank hadn’t come in for his midday snack. She called his name in alleys and streets around her home. As it got dark, she began to worry. Then she heard mewling, looked up and spotted Hank, seated on a branch near the top of a neighbor’s tree.
Bushong believes Hank got under a fence and then became scared by some dogs. The more scared he got, the higher he climbed.
“Cats have an amazing ability to climb up trees, but actually they aren’t that good at climbing down,” said Dan Eramo, director of field services for the Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA).
Bushong, now worried about getting Hank down, asked the HRA to take the lead, but it was no easy task. HRA called the fire department, but it refused to help, citing safety concerns. Then Bushong called a construction company to ask about renting scaffolding(脚手架) but was told she would have to book the equipment 48 days in advance.
Next she reached out of a local tree company, Casey Trees, where volunteers helping with planting and trimming. But the crew that came out analyzed Hank’s predicament(困境)and said it wasn’t safe for a person to go up into the tree because the branches weren’t strong.
Bushong was quite upset. “To realize something you love is in trouble and you personally can’t do anything about it is very frustrating,” she said.
Paragraph1. Seeing this, the neighbors came to Hank’s rescue.

When Megan went into her local shop one day, a used jacket with gold thread was appealing to her. It was beautiful and cheap enough. She took the jacket home without a second thought. It was in such good condition that she couldn’t imagine why anyone would even sell it. She must have needed the money badly.
She grabbed her phone for a selfie(自拍)and stuck her other hand in her pocket. That’s when she felt something and took it out. It was a piece of paper with an address not far from her house. But something else caught her attention. It was a message that read: “Help my grandkids!” What could this mean? she wondered. She grabbed the note and reread the address. “OK, let’s do this,” she rushed out of the door with the jacket and got to the address.
A little kid answered the door. “Hello?” she said in a small voice.
“Hmmm… hi,” Megan started. “Is your grandmother or grandfather here?”
“We only have a grandma,” the little girl replied. Two other kids were standing there with wide eyes and confused expressions.
The house was untidy. There were tons of toys lying around.
The little girl guided Megan to a bedroom. An older woman was lying on the bed looking too pale. Megan said, “Madam, excuse me for coming in like this. But I bought this jacket and found a note inside.”
“Oh, thank you for responding to the note,” the older woman said. “I made a huge effort yesterday to reach the shop, sell it, and buy something for my grandkids to eat. But I was afraid that my disease would progress, so I wrote the note, hoping that someone would see it and help.”
Megan was puzzled. “I don’t understand. Couldn’t you call any family to help out?”
“We don’t have anyone else, and I’ve had to spend my pension(退休金)on medication that wasn’t working very well,” the older woman explained. “I’m sorry. I’m Erica, and I have chemical pneumonia(肺炎).”
“I’m Megan. Do you need me to call 911 or something?” Megan moved closer to the older woman. Erica shook her head, and tears gathered in her eyes.

Marathons are not for the faint of heart, nor the faint of lungs. You might think you’re up for it, but then your lungs will remind you halfway through that this might be too much. I have a ton of respect for people who do compete in them. Make sure you stretch a lot before you do one! This story though, is about someone who could have finished the race sooner but chose not to.
There are people who are well in-shape to run a marathon, and marines (海军陆战队士兵) are definitely some of those people. Military training is some of the toughest out there. They’ll make you do push up (俯卧撑) after push up, course after course, and they’ll make you do it regularly. A marine is thus well-prepared to run something like a marathon race.
Myles Kerr was a 19-year-old marine who joined in a 5-kilometre marathon. As the name implies, a 5-kilometre marathon is 5 kilometers of running you have to do. And 5 kilometers is a lot to run on foot. It is definitely not a distance you should attempt without a lot of preparation and training. Myles, thanks to his training, was even able to wear boots while he ran.
While Myles and the other marines with him could handle this just fine, one other runner couldn’t. It was 9-year-old Brandon Fuchs. The boy joined in the race as part of a group. However, he got separated from the group as the race progressed. He was now quite far behind and struggling to finish the race.
Brandon is just 9 years old, but he is fond of sports. He always sits in front of TV watching matches of all kinds of sports, especially matches concerning running. He ever participated in some kinds of running races, which made him even more interested in sports. When he knew a short-distanced marathon was to be held in his city, he signed up for it without hesitation.

Kate double—checked the words on her spelling test. Ms. Cormack said that whoever won in her class’s Spelling Challenge today, they’d win a brand new dictionary. Plus, the teacher had promised to do a handstand if anyone got a perfect score.
Three more words to go. N—i—c—e—l—y. Q—u—i—c—k—ly. H—o—n—e—s—t—y. Wait! She’d spelled “honesty”, not “honestly”. She hurriedly erased the t—y and wrote l—y before handing in her paper.
Ms. Cormack graded the test papers at break. Meanwhile, Kate sat restlessly in her seat with her fingers crossed. Then, Ms. Cormack walked to the front of the class and cleared her throat. As if she were an Olympic gymnast, Ms. Cormack did a perfect handstand.
“Congratulations, Kate! You did it!” she announced while standing on her hands.
The whole class broke into applause! Ms. Cormack righted herself and presented Kate with her prize. Kate smiled as she read the label on the box:
To Kate Carter, for her perfect score in the Spelling Challenge.
“Is everything OK?” Mom asked as Kate rushed through the front door after school. Kate didn’t answer. As if by magic, she took out her spelling test paper and prize and showed them to her mother. Mom hugged her, asking her to put the test paper on the fridge so that Dad could see it when he got home.
Kate took another look at the test paper before putting it on the fridge. Suddenly, her hands stopped in mid—air. She just couldn’t believe her eyes. “Honesly”?
YES! H—O—N—E—S—L—Y!
Mom sensed something unusual and asked why. Kate put the test paper into her backpack and explained that she was just too excited. Mom brought her some tea. Yes, a “t” was exactly what she needed.
After drinking a little, Kate kept walking in her bedroom, lost in thought. How could she tell the class she hadn’t earned the prize and that Ms. Cormack did the handstand for nothing?

David is a 22-year-old man. Not having received a college education, he found it difficult to find a job. He worked at a small company and wasn’t paid well. He thought life was unfair and often complained.
One day, his boss asked him to go to his office. To his sadness, he was told he didn’t need to come to work again.
That day, David didn’t go straight back to the small apartment he shared with another man. He wanted to find a quiet place and sit there quietly for some time. Having lost his job, he had no idea what to do.
He walked and walked. Finally he stopped in front of a beautiful house. The house had a very big garden behind it. He saw an old man sitting in the garden.
“The old man must be a millionaire” thought David, “How I wish I were him! If I were him, I wouldn’t have to work and I’d have a large amount of money. I would be the happiest man in the whole world. ”
Thinking how poor he was, David was even sadder. He hurriedly walked forward and found a place and sat there quietly.
Finally, he became hungry and decided to go back home. On his way back home, he passed the old man’s house again. This time the man was sitting in his front yard. When David passed by him, he noticed that the old man was looking at him. The old man looked as if he admired him very much. David was confused. Why would such a rich man admire him? He was so poor while he was so rich.
Finally, David decided to have a talk with the old man. So he stopped and walked to the old man.
“Hello,” he said.
”Hello,” said the old man.
Then they started talking. David told the old man he really admired him.
“You have such a beautiful house. You’re so rich! How I wish I were you!” said David.
Hearing that, the old man smiled and said, “And I admire you, too! I wish I were you! If I were you, I’d still enjoy my youth. Now I’m so old. Wealth doesn’t mean much to me!”

Forgiveness is the most important tool humans have been blessed with. Because, with it, we can let go of unnecessary burdens and truly own our lives. And by doing that, you maybe make a friend. That was a lesson an eleven-year-old boy taught me when I was in my eighth grade.
When I was in the fifth grade, there was a boy in my class named Kyle. He was big and strong. Maybe he was kind inside. Maybe he was just good at pretending in face of adults. I said so because I happened to see him helping an old man who was so grateful that he couldn’t stop saying thanks to him.
However, to the children of his age, he was the meanest person I had ever met. For the first couple days of school, Kyle and I sat across from each other. Once, he secretly reached his legs across the table and slammed (猛踩) his shoe clown on mine, causing a rapid rush of pain. I stared at him angrily, but he just made faces to me. I chose to ignore him. I didn’t want to get involved into trouble because I was anxious to leave to see my brother. He suffered from a strange disease. Despite the fact that he was slow and had special needs, I loved him and couldn’t stand others laughing at him.
Kyle’s bullying (欺凌) went on. Eventually, I told a teacher, and my seat was moved. But Kyle’s abuse didn’t stop. He continued to call me names, such as “stupid”. His words were quite embarrassing to an eleven-year-old girl. He as continued to physically hurt me. In “morning meeting” he once stepped on my foot so hard that I burst into tears. This continued for most of the school year.
Kyle also bullied my friend Megan. At one point she ran out of the classroom because he copied her nonstop. Both of us were absolutely painful. And despite meetings with teachers and guidance counselors, nothing changed. We had a large class of noisy boys, and the teacher had a hard time keeping order.

“I’m going to miss you so much, Poppy,” said the tall, thin teenager. He bent down to hug his old friend goodbye. He stood up, hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to let his emotions get the better of him.
His parents were not quite able to keep theirs under control. They had driven their son several hours out of town to the university where he would soon be living and studying. It was time to say goodbye for now at least. The family hugged and smiled through misty eyes and then laughed.
The boy lifted the last bag onto his shoulder, and flashed a bright smile. “I guess this is it, ” he said. “I’ll see you back home in a month, okay? ” His parents nodded, and they watched as he walked out of sight into the crowds of hundreds of students and parents. The boy’s mother turned to the dog, “Okay, Poppy, time to go back home.”
The house seemed quiet as a tomb without the boy living there. All that week, Poppy didn’t seem interested in her dinner, her favorite toy, or even in her daily walk. Her owners were sad too, but they knew their son would be back to visit. Poppy didn’t.
They offered the dog some of her favorite peanut butter treats. They even let her sit on the sofa, but the old girl just wasn’t her usual cheerful self. Her owners started to get worried. “What should we do to cheer Poppy up?” asked Dad. “We’ve tried everything.”
“I have an idea, but it might be a little crazy, ” smiled Mom. “Without anybody left in the house but us, this place could use a bit of fun. Let’s get a little dog for Poppy.”
It didn’t take long before they walked through the front door carrying a big box. Poppy welcomed them home as usual, but when she saw the box, she stopped. She put her nose on it. Her tail began wagging ever so slowly, then faster as she caught the smell.

On a cold windy day, a poor boy tried to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door. Wandering on the street, he was not a successful seller. What’s worse, he found that he only had one dime left. His empty stomach reminded him constantly that for days he hadn’t eaten anything. He had no choice but to beg for a meal at the next house. Hesitantly he knocked at a door, thinking about what to say when it was opened. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. “What can I do for you?” asked the young woman. The boy paused for a while, “Would you please give me some...a drink of water?” the boy dared not to look directly into her eyes. She looked at the bony boy and thought he might need something to give him energy so she brought him a glass of milk. His head rising and small hands taking the cup, he drank it up slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?” “You don’t owe me anything,” she replied with a warm smile on her face. “My mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.”Deeply moved, he said sincerely, “Then I shall thank you from the bottom of my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in the whole human race. As a matter of fact, he was about to give up and quit before that point.
Years later the young woman became critically ill. However, the local doctors were unable to give an effective medical treatment. Finally they sent her to a hospital in the big city, where specialists can be called in to cure her rare disease. Among those famous specialists, Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.

The Dog Who Saved Our Family
We met Max at the pickup area of Alaska Airlines five years ago. He was a standard poodle(狮子狗)born on Valentine’s Day in 2017, and came to us in a small blue box. We had adopted him from an out-of-state raiser who posted the news on the social network. Our only request was that he have a calm behavior, able to bear the pushing and hugging of our eight-year-old daughter and six-year-old son.
We were a sweet little family:me,my husband, and our children, Sophie and Jake. But for years I’d felt as if we wouldn’t really be complete until we had a dog. Also, my husband worked in a business company and had to travel some 200 days a year for his job, and I knew I’d feel safer with a large animal sleeping by the door.
When we opened the box, the last piece of our puzzle fell into place. With his black hair and intelligent eyes,Max was beautiful. He was so small that he fit into the palm of my hand, his big paws lapping over the sides. He was also a little bit scared. As I pulled him close,I felt his heart pound and wondered if we’d done the right thing, taking him from his mother. But it was too late. Sophie and Jake were already fighting over who would hold him next and who should have the right to take a bath for him.
Over the following months, we spent endless hours watching Max play with his Kong toy or roll around the living room floor. Like most poodles, he was smart. He mastered house-training quickly and never chewed on our furniture or shoes. He considered himself one of us.

Violet and Tilly were two sisters. Tilly was so stuck with her sister that she always followed her elder sister, Violet, everywhere. For example, when Violet was painting, she would paint by her side. Every time, Violet looked at her angrily. Couldn’t she find her own thing to do? This time, it was Tilly’s first week at gymnastics, while Violet had done gymnastics for the past two years.
Violet sat on the gym floor, waiting for her turn to do somersaults (翻筋斗). She frowned at her little sister across the room. Why couldn’t Tilly always find her own thing to do? “Violet, you’re up!” called Violet’s instructor, Miss Taylor. Violet came over and pushed off with her legs and straightened her arms. She did one, two, three somersaults. Miss Taylor clapped. “Perfect!”
Violet noticed that Tilly had stepped away from the younger group to watch Violet’s somersaults. “Tilly!” called Tilly’s instructor, Miss Brooke, from across the room. Tilly didn’t seem to hear. Not until she was called three times did she run back to her group. “ Your turn to do somersaults. ” Miss Brooke put an arm around her. Tilly walked to the mat with her face turning red like a tomato. She bent down to start a somersault. When she rolled, she fell heavily on the mat. Kids laughed in surprise at the noise.
Tilly stood uncomfortably and then ran towards the restroom. She was gone from the gym, as Violet had wanted. But it didn’t feel right. After telling Miss Taylor where she was going, Violet hurried to the restroom. She found Tilly crying hard. Violet put an arm around her sister. Seeing Violet, Tilly cried even harder. Tilly sniffed “I don’t want to do gymnastics any more.” She wiped away the tears with the back of her hand. This was Violet’s chance. Paragraph 1: Seeing this, the neighbors came to Hank’s rescue. One neighbor donated a can of sardines, hoping it might attracted the hungry cat to come down. Another neighbor brought a tall ladder, which unfortunately proved still too short. With Hank stuck in the tree for a prolonged time, Bushong’s worries mounted. When Lydia whose tree Hank had climbed, talked about how her sister got her cat down from a tree, Bushong decided to try it at once. Together they produced a system of pulleys(滑轮)and lifted a basket with some of Hank’s favorite things up to him. To their excitement Hank jumped into it.
Paragraph 2: Once on the ground Bushong picked Hank into her arms holding him close. Hank was still trembling with fear. The kind neighbor offered the can of sardines. The starving cat licked the can clean and then settled comfortably in his owner’s arms purring enthusiastically. Seeing this, all the neighbors present smiled with relief. Bushong said, with gratitude welling up in her heart, “I feel good living in such a friendly neighborhood. It gave me hope when Hank was in trouble.” Hanks adventure taught us a lesson about neighbors helping neighbors.
参考范文(二):
Paragraph 1: Seeing this, the neighbors came to Hank’s rescue. They comforted Bushong and started their rescue action. One neighbor hit a basin to make some noise attracting the Hank’s attention. Suddenly a tower crane which belonged to a construction company nearby came to rescue. The driver lifted the crane to get close to Hank. Scared but trying to be rescued, Hank finally jumped into it and then was transported to the ground.
Paragraph 2: Once on the ground, Bushong picked Hank into her arms holding him close. She was still upset for the previous scene. Only holding her beloved pet in arms could she really be comforted. With teary eyes, she expressed her gratitude to the people who attended the rescue work. All cheered. They clapped their hands for this great rescue. The other marines with him had already ran far ahead and had no idea what Myles was doing. They even feared that he might have bitten off more than he could chew with the race, and that he might have come down with fatigue or an injury.
Seeing Myles run together with Brandon, people felt confused. But they wouldn’t know it until the pair made it to the finish line. They both finished the race, but Myles did give up the lead he worked hard to get. That didn’t matter to him though. This boy needed him, and that mattered a whole lot more.
