Every girl dreams and Jasmine is no exception. When Jasmine was young, she had read dozens of books on how to be a ballerina(芭蕾舞者), Suan Lake was her favorite and she had always wanted to become the white swan in it. Later, she started taking ballet lessons and all her teachers confirmed she was a good student. In the hope of becoming a great ballerina, she trained hard on a daily basis.
One day, she saw an advertisement that a famous ballerina troupe(舞团)would be performing in her hometown. And the whole town was talking about the troupe leader, who was said to be the best ballet dancer in the world. Her thoughts ran wild. "I must meet the leader of the troupe and show him my skills" she murmured to herself.
She dressed herself in her best ballerina costume and managed to slip in the backstage without being noticed. To her luck, the leader entered the dressing room and she timidly knocked at the door "Come in" said a gentle voice. Opening the door, Jasmine saw a tall and slim man with a calm look on his face. She bravely approached him and handed him a bunch of red roses and in her excitement the thorns pricked(刺痛)her hand but she did not pay much attention to the pain.
The leader observed her action as she told him her dream. "Alright, you dance and I will give you my advice."
But half way through the dance he stopped her and said, "I'm sorry you're not good enough!" On hearing this, Jasmine's eyes opened wide in shock. It was seconds before she could absorb what was said to her, "Not good enough?!" she asked in disbelief. "Yes, not good enough." replied the leader. Boiled in shame and rage, Jasmine ran out of the dressing room as fast as her legs could carry her. The leader's words were a huge blow to her confidence. Despite being so sad, she didn't give up her dream.

A few years ago, on a cold winter evening, I was having dinner with some good friends. One of them told us a sad story about something that had happened the day before. Her sons friend was in his mid-twenties and self-employed. He lived on the second floor of a house nearby. Someone who lived on the first floor had been smoking and fell asleep. The house burned down. Although everyone was safe, the house was completely destroyed with everything in it.
All this young man had were the clothes on his back and his pickup truck. He had no family in the area and nowhere to go. My friend was putting him up for a few days until he could decide what to do next.
Those of us sitting at the dinner table felt sympathetic for the young man. Everyone started opening their wallets to contribute money. My friend stopped us and told us he would not accept money. All he wanted was a warm coat and some other used clothing. We were all more than happy to fulfill this request and were told that he wore a size 3XL. None of us knew men who wore such an unusual size, so it was going to be a challenge to take care of this quickly.
But it was a typically cold New York winter, and I couldn’t imagine him without a coat. So even though I had fifteen people coming to dinner on the coming weekend, and I had many things to do for the big party, I decided to look for a coat in a size that was difficult to find.
I got dressed and went to the thrift shop (旧货店) the next morning. I was there when it opened at nine. I went through every coat and jacket but found nothing even close to what I needed. As I headed toward the exit, I considered trying to find something in a department store, but it would be expensive, and I had no time to shop.

Once upon a time, there lived a girl named Walk. She was a good girl, but she never liked her name as all the kids around her made fun of her name. She ran away from everybody who laughed at her name, so Walk never really had friends. She would play alone all the time.
One day, Walk went to her favorite place near the river behind her house, where she always spoke to the river in her own way. Today, when talking to the river, she said, “You are so fortunate, as you get to travel to different places and always be with your friends—ducks, turtles, fishes, and plants. I wish I had more friends and wouldn’t be alone anymore.”
When she was bored talking to the river, she picked up some stones and tried to skip(打水漂)them across the river like her dad did. However, she failed most of the time. Finally, she found a perfect stone. She held it tightly in her fingers, and said to the river, “Oh, dear river, if I could skip this stone all the way across, I would wish for a dear friend just like you.” Saying this, Walk waved her arm back just like her dad had taught her and threw the stone with full strength.
She watched the stone skip once, twice... and to her amazement, the stone went on skipping and eventually, on the seventh skip, made it across the river onto the shore of the opposite side. Walk was totally amazed. She could not just believe her eyes.
Her deep thoughts and happiness were disturbed when she heard footsteps coming towards her. Walk looked around and found a little girl was rolling down towards her. Walk panicked and hurried to get up to help. However, she lost her balance and fell off too.
The little girl was crying and holding her knee. Walk pulled herself and went close to the girl, whose knee was bleeding. She said gently to the little girl, “It will be alright. My house is nearby, let me help you. My mother will take care of the wound.”

My dad, George, only had an eighth-grade education. A quiet man, he didn’t understand my world of school activities. From age 14. he worked. And his dad, Albert, took the money my dad earned and used it to pay family expenses.
I didn’t really understand his world either: He was a livestock trucker, and I thought that I would surpass anything he had accomplished by the time I walked across the stage at high school graduation. Summers in the mid-70s were spent at home shooting baskets, hitting a baseball, or throwing a football, preparing for my future as a quarterback on a football team. In poor weather, I read about sports or practiced my trombone. The summer before my eighth grade I was one of a group of boys that a neighboring farmer hired to work in his field. He explained our basic task, the tractor fired up and we were off, riding down the field looking for weeds to spray with chemicals. After a short way, the farmer stopped and pointed at a weed which we missed. Then we began again. This happened over and over, but we soon learned to identify different grasses like cockleburs, lamb’s-quarters, foxtails, and the king of weeds, the pretty purple thistle. It was tiring work, but I looked forward to the pay, even though I wasn’t sure how much it would amount to.
At home, my dad said, “A job’s a big step to growing up. I’m glad you will be contributing to the household.” My dad’s words made me realize that my earnings might not be mine to do with as I wished.
My labors lasted about two weeks, and the farmer said there might be more work, but I wasn’t interested. I decided it was not fair that I had to contribute my money.

In January 2020, my life wasn’t just great. I was the youngest in my amazing group of best friends, I had managed to secure 8 spot on the swim team. Then when February began, I had the best Sweet Sixteen a girl could ask for. Shortly after my birthday, my team traveled for week in Hawaii.
Little did we know we would return to chaos and a complete change of our way of life. It was March 13 and there was talk of school shutting down for two weeks. We were all excited, but on top of the news of the day, some students pulled the fire alarm and we found ourselves in the pouring rain on the wet, muddy field. About to be dismissed for what was only supposed to be a long spring break, my best friends, who I had seen practically every day, made promises to each other about how we would stay close during the lockdown.
Shortly into quarantine(隔离期), I found myself taking up hobbies like learning French, catching up on TV shows, learning piano, and doing anything I could to keep myself busy. At the time, online school was a complete joke. It was all homework because the teachers didn’t know how to teach online yet. Looking back on March 13th, I felt like a fool for thinking two weeks would be a solution to a pandemic(流行病). Months went by and the new school year began. I couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that I went from training in the pool for fifteen hours a week to zero. My desire to catch up on hobbies went away, and the pain of missing my friends came. I was in a battle for my mental and physical health.

A man came home from work late again, tired and irritated, to find his 5-year-old son waiting for him at the door.
“Daddy, may I ask you a question?”
"Yeah, sure. What is it?"replied the man.
“Daddy, how much money do you make an hour?”
“That’s none of your business. What makes you ask such a thing?” the man said angrily.
“I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?” pleaded the little boy.
“If you must know, I make $20 an hour.”
“Oh,” the little boy replied, with his head bowed.
Looking up, he said, “Daddy, may I borrow $10, please?”
The father was furious. “If the only reason you wanted to know how much money I make is just so you can borrow some to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you’re being so selfish. I work long, hard hours every day and don’t have time for such childish games.”
The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even madder about the little boy’s questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money? After an hour or so, the man had calmed down, and started to think he may have been a little hard on his son. Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $10 and he really didn’t ask for money very often.
The man went to the door of the little boy’s room and opened the door.
“Are you asleep, son?” he asked.
“No, Daddy, I’m awake,” replied the boy.
“I’ve been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier,” said the man. “It has been a long day and I took my aggravation out on you. Here’s that $10 you asked for.”
The little boy sat straight up, beaming. “Oh. Thank you, Daddy!” he yelled.
Paragraph 1:
Then, the little boy reached under his pillow.

Mom and I walked side by side through the town. I was twelve years old, and dependent on her. She raised me by herself, and except for when I was at school, we were almost always together.
She was a nurse, but after my birth she quit her job to care for me. It was said that she was once one of the best nurses in a big local hospital. Recently she had returned to work there. She said she wanted to spend more time being with me, but she couldn’t.
I didn’t like her going back to work. She left at 5:45 am, which made me responsible for waking myself up, fixing breakfast and walking to the 7:30 am bus.
I hated being left home alone in the mornings, but I especially hated having to take the bus. Once I had missed it. I wasn’t only late to school, but I had also caused Mom to scramble to find someone else to drive me. After that, I was so worried about missing the bus that I left for the bus stop too early every day. I stood by myself before the other kids arrived, in wind, rain and snow, having to bear the embarrassment when crowded by adult passengers sometimes.
Mom worked the day shift so she could pick me up after school. Every time she didn’t go to the hospital, she would drive me both ways. Those were the best days.
On such a day, as we walked on the sidewalk, I saw an old man coming close to us. When he saw us, he suddenly showed a wide smile, but I didn’t recognize him. “Leigh! Leigh!” he said, calling my mother’s name. My mother also greeted him cheerfully. He asked me whether I was the daughter of my mom. I said “yes”. “I didn’t know him and just looked at him, unsure of my role. “Well, it is very nice to meet you, young lady. I hope you know how lucky you are!” he said.
Paragraph 1:
Not knowing why he said so, I looked at him uncertainly.

When I was young, I lived in a small village in Melaka. We lived in a house in a row of shop houses. The spirit of neighborliness was very strong then. We needn’t lock the doors of our houses by day or night. The village had a variety of trades to serve the needs of the villagers. There was s barber, tailor, coffee shop owner, grocer, baker, electrician, plumber, and so on. All of us were quite poor by today’s standards but we got by. However, one family that could be considered to live a marginal(边界的) existence was the Lim family living in the bicycle shop opposite our house.
Mr Lim, the bicycle mechanic, had quite a few children—twelve to be exact. The joke among the neighbors was that he was aiming to form a football team among his children. How-ever, seriously speaking, it was no joke for him trying to feed his growing children daily.
My mother was a kind-hearted woman. Often, she would remark that his children were dressed in ragged(破旧的) clothes and looked malnourished(营养不良的). My family was relatively rich in the village and my father was the headman. My mother would bring over whatever food we could spare to our neighbors. On occasions when there was leftover food from village weddings or festivals, my father would ask me to take the food to Mr Lim. I did not mind visiting Lim’s bicycle shop as I had an interest in bicycles.
I shared a room with my brothers overlooking the bicycle shop. I was interested in the re-pair of bicycles and would often stare out of the window to see Mr Lim work. As time went on, I noticed Mr Lim become more and more cheerful. The number of customers at his shop had increased steadily. He sold many shiny new bicycles.

It was a January afternoon. My wife, Savitri and I sat on the Sahyadri Express. As the train pulled out of the station, we could barely hide our excitement. We were finally on the way to a honeymoon to Matheran! This was the first time we had enough savings to go on a trip together.
The train stopped at Neral, where we were forced out of our reverie (白日梦). As we stepped out and started making inquiries, we realized it was unlikely that we would find a train to take us to the misty hill station we had been dreaming of for months. The afternoon gradually settled into a pink dusk as we sat in a corner at the station, waiting for news of the train services as the cold winter breeze rattled (使紧张)our bones. We unwrapped some biscuits when a little girl, no more than five or six, went past us, screaming, “But I want food! I am hungry!”
Savitri's eyes turned to the girl’s family. Smiling, she called out-her name was Mehrunisa,we overheard-and asked her to seek her parent’s permission to accept biscuits from us. Left with no option, her family accepted, And we began chatting.
After several hours, the train finally arrived. We entered alongside. As the short uphill journey progressed, Savitri and I softly discussed our trouble. It seemed unlikely that our reservation at Ragdi Hotel would still be held. As the train arrived and we rose to bid the family goodbye, Mehrunisa’s father, Viraaz, suggested that he would accompany us to make sure that we had a place to spend the night. He had overheard our anxious exchange.
His family headed to their guesthouse and Viraaz came with us to look for a hotel. To no one’s surprise, Ragdi Hotel was packed with people. The manager offered assistance by placing a few beds in the coal storage room but the cold made it uninhabitable. A gradual dread(恐惧)started to appear in my mind.

Once there lived a little girl named Tara, with her mother in a small hut near the forest. Tara was a good-natured and kind-hearted little girl. Every day she would go to the forest along with her mother to collect woods. That day as usual Tara accompanied her mother to the forest and while her mother was busy collecting woods in the forest, Tara sat there on a piece of log looking at the beautiful trees and birds flying around it. Suddenly a cute little rabbit grabbed her attention and she ran towards the rabbit. As soon as the rabbit saw Tara coming close, it ran towards the jungle and Tara playfully began chasing the rabbit. Tara ran fast and finally caught hold of the rabbit. As soon as Tara held the rabbit in her arms, it suddenly disappeared from her hands and in the air appeared a beautiful fairy. The little girl was taken by surprise and she could not believe her eyes. She asked the fairy, “Who are you?”
The fairy told Tara that a wicked witch(女巫)had cursed her and transformed her into a rabbit. The witch told the fairy that she would return to her original form only if an innocent and kind-hearted person touches her. And when Tara touched the rabbit, the spell of the wicked witch was broken and the fairy was able to return to her original form. The fairy said to the little girl, "Ask for a wish, I will grant you the same.”
Tara could not say a single word as she could still not believe what she saw and heard just now. Understanding Tara's condition, the fairy gave her a magic stick and told Tara that whenever she wants her wish to be fulfilled, just wave the magic stick in the air and ask for the wish. Her wish would be granted at once. The fairy told Tara that only one wish will be fulfilled and disappeared.

参考答案:
1.Six months later, she heard that the same ballet troupe was performing in her town again. Bitter memories of the leader's harsh words came flooding back to her. This time she was determined to find out why the leader had told her she was not good enough when all her teachers thought otherwise. He replied, “I tell this to every student.” She angrily shot back, “You've ruined my life!” Then she got a further shock, “I remember your gift of roses and how the thorns had pricked your fingers but you carried on bravely.” He said if she did not give up so easily, it might be a different story.
Within three years, Jasmine had become a famous ballerina as she wanted. Guided by the troupe leader, she succeeded in attaining the leading position in the Swan Lake. Her elegant appearance and excellent performance on the stage was so amazing that she gained power over all the audiences. Despite being so famous, Jasmine still felt nervous sometimes. But one word would always calm her down: “If you want to pick roses, don’t be afraid of the thorns.”

2.Just as I was about to leave the shop, the shopkeeper who was tall and strong came out of the storehouse. I explained the story and asked if he had a coat in size 3XL. He told me to wait for a while and then went back to the storehouse. Several minutes later, the shopkeeper came back with a coat which seemed to be just in the perfect size and style. And much to my surprise, he told me that 3XL was just his size and that the coat was intended for himself but he would be willing to donate it to the young man I was to help.
I took the coat, thanked the kind shopkeeper and left the thrift shop. He could have just said no, but he gave such generous donation. It was the shopkeeper that made the freezing winter day much warmer. And this warmth was passed on. My friend delivered the coat to the young man, who was very grateful. He eventually got back on his feet with the help of other good friends. I’ve told this story to many people, who agreed that we all could do a seemingly small thing that has a great positive impact on others.

Once they arrived at her house, Walk called out, “Mom, help! Someone is injured.” On hearing this, Walk’s mother came quickly with the first-aid box. She made the little girl sit on the sofa and started cleaning the wound. She cleaned her knee, applied medicine to the wound, and wrapped it with bandages, which made the girl relaxed. She then asked the girl where she lived. The girl replied that she had just moved here. All the houses looked so similar that she mixed them up. Walk was surprised and felt a bit of joy thinking about her wish.
The little girl looked at Walk and asked, “What is your name?” Walk froze and was scared to tell her name. However, Walk’s mother replied, “Her name is Walk and I am glad she could help you.” On hearing this, the little girl began to laugh. Walk felt sad and was near to tears. Just then, the girl stopped laughing and sincerely apologized, “I am sorry, but it is so funny as my name happens to be Run.” Walk was surprised and almost broke into laughter herself. Her wish for the river had come true, and now she had a very good friend named Run.

4.Paragraph 1:
The pay day arrived at last. Although the job was very tiring, I was very happy in my heart for I got something from my work. The toil of labor was forgotten for the time being. I thought I should have my own money and planned how to spend it. “How much money have you earned?” Dad asked. I was surprised, reluctant to say my income. The next morning, my dad’s livestock truck started running. I saw my father’s hard-working figure and thought of his words “A job’s a big step to growing up”.
Paragraph 2:
I understood immediately what my parents were worried about. They were worried that I was too selfish to give. I realized that my labor was very hard, but my growth and our whole family had been depending on the hard work of my parents! Dad never complained about unfairness! He even seemed to think that was fair. I thought, “I’ve only worked for two weeks, but how many years my father has worked!” In the evening, Dad came back. I proudly took out my own money and handed it to Dad.

It was different this year but I still looked forward to the normal activities: New year’s eve dinner, opening gifts with my family on New Year’s Day, no school for two whole weeks!
I made a New Year’s resolution to become more devoted to my studies. As I did that, I found the college conversation became less stressful. I thought about all the possibilities for my future, and the passions I would pursue. I became more excited about the unknown. It was at that time that my father’s business took a turn for the worse. One day, his senior assistant ran away with a large number of the shop’s earnings, which led to my father’s being in debt. My father then unwillingly sold our family car to pay off the increasing bills. They say that one good deed deserves another. Mr Lim came to learn of our situation and stepped in to help.
