The STAR Eco Station is an environmental science museum, a wildlife rescue center, and a shelter for endangered and illegally-traded foreign animals confiscated(没收) by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It carries out the mission “Preservation through Education” by educating visitors about the preservation of the environment and the inter-dependence of all living things.
    Field trips
STAR Eco Station hosts field trips for schools and camps throughout Southern California. Each field trip lasts two hours, consisting of a one-hour gathering and a one-hour tour of the facility, with lessons associated with California State Science Standards.
Throughout the field trip, students learn about the latest developments in environmental protection and the ways in which wildlife interacts with various ecosystems. The students also receive an up-close and hands-on experience with our rescued foreign wildlife. The tour includes different environmental exhibits that showcase the ways students can help protect animals in the wild.
Field trips are offered on weekdays only, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. or 12 p.m.-2 p.m. The rate is $6 per visitor, both child and adult, with a $120 minimum. We offer one free adult per 10 children for groups of 40 or more. Maximum capacity is 120 people per field trip.
    Public tours
Guided tours of the STAR Eco Station introduce visitors to over two hundred rescued foreign wildlife. Each tour is led by an Eco Station staff member, and features fun animal facts, hands-on animal encounters, surprising rescue stories, environmental exhibits, and original approaches to going green. Visitors may only see the animals on a guided tour, for both your safety and the safety of our animals.
The guided tour lasts approximately 45-60 minutes. Public tours are offered on Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. (last tour begins at 3 p.m.). Our guided public tours start every hour on the hour. Visitors are served on a first-come, first-served basis. No reservations are required. However, tours may sell out. China is one of the largest producers and consumers of watermelon in the world. And Wu Mingzhu, a schoolmate of Yuan Longping at Southwest Agricultural College in Chongqing in the late 1940s, is the unsung hero who has helped make this possible.
“It’s no exaggeration(夸张) to say that about 80 percent of more than 2,000 of China’s new seed types of watermelons and sweet melons at people’s dining tables every day are the result of great efforts made by Wu and her team over more than 60 years,” said a colleague of Wu’s.
In 1955, Wu voluntarily went to work in Shanssen County, Turpan Basin in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region where working conditions were hard. In 1958, Wu began to promote the modern technology of planting melons among farmers. However, the local farmers who were used to folk planting methods, didn’t seem to take kindly to that. With the help of a famous local melon expert, Wu opened up three acres of wasteland to plant melon according to scientific knowledge. When autumn arrived, local farmers found the melons Wu planted in a scientific way were particularly delicious. From then on, the farmers began to adopt Wu’s scientific growing methods.
Wu's efforts to grow quality melons began paying off in 1973 when she went to the off-season breeding base in Hainan. She wanted to develop Hainan as a pilot area so that the south area of China could also grow melons, and realize the dream of three-matured or even four-matured melons. After numerous difficulties, finally in the 80s, the melon variety selected by Wu succeeded. Wu said, “In Xinjiang, there are thousands of science and technology workers like me. They have worked hard for decades on the frontline of agriculture. I'm just one of the ordinary ones.”
Now dealing with Alzheimer’s disease, Wu is often unable to recognize her former colleagues or even her family members who live by her side. But having worked day and night to breed new seed types since the 1950s, she can still remember her melon work.
    24. What does Wu’s colleague want to say according to Paragraph 2?
    A. People make profits from planting watermelons.
    B. Wu has made great contributions to planting watermelons.
    C. China is the largest consumer of watermelon in the world.
    D. Wu is delighted to see melons at people's dining tables.
    25. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
    A. Local farmers trusted Wu at first. B. Wu failed to spread her technology.
    C. Wu's technology worked in Turpan Basin. D.A local expert improved Wu's methods.
    26. Why did Wu choose Hainan as a breeding base?
    A. To attract more watermelon consumers.
    B. To earn more money by selling more melons.
    C. To guide the local farmers to grow watermelons.
    D. To improve the speed and efficiency of breeding.
    27. What is the passage mainly about?
    A. A devoted watermelon scientist. B. Wu Mingzhu’s lifestyle.
    C. Wu Mingzhu’s new discovery. D. The modem technology of melon growing.
    C
What kind of people can become scientists? When a group of researchers posed that question to ninth-and 10th-graders, almost every student gave such responses as “People who work hard” or“Anyone who seems interested in the field of science.”
Many of these same students struggled to imagine themselves as scientists, citing concerns such as “I’m not good at science” and “Even if I work hard, I will not do well.” It’s easy for them to see a scientist’s work as arising from an inborn talent.
But for high school students, learning more about some struggles of scientists can help students feel more motivated to learn science. Researchers at Teachers College, Columbia University and the University of Washington designed an intervention to change students’ beliefs that scientific achievement depends on ability rather than effort by exposing students to stories of how accomplished scientists struggled and overcame challenges in their scientific efforts.
During the study, the students read one of three types of stories about Albert Einstein, Marie Curie and Michael Faraday. Intellectual struggle stories: stories about how scientists“struggled intellectually,”such as making mistakes while addressing a scientific problem and learning from them. Life struggle stories: stories about how scientists struggled in their personal lives, such as not giving up in the face of poverty or lack of family support. Achievement stories: stories about how scientists made great discoveries, without any discussion of coexisting challenges.
Researchers found that students who heard either type of “struggle stories” improved their science performance after intervention, compared to students in the control group. The effect was especially pronounced for lower performing students, for whom exposure to struggling stories led to significantly better science-class performance than low-performing students who read achievement stories. In addition, students who read struggle stories reported feeling more personally connected to the scientists. By recognizing a scientist’s struggles and introducing the growth mindset he or she applied to accomplish great works, the students were able to empathize(共情) with the scientists during their own struggles.
    28. Why do students fail to imagine themselves as scientists?
A They lack interest in science. B. They are short of confidence
    C. They don’t have inborn talent. D. They have no ability to study science
    29. What’s the purpose of the intervention?
    A. To introduce some inspirational stories to students.
    B. To expose students to scientists’ great achievements.
    C. To ensure students will become scientists in the future.
    D. To clear students’ misunderstandings of scientific work.
    30. The underlined word “pronounced” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to________.
    A. minimal B. noticeable C. doubtful D. long-lasting
    31. What can we learn from the research?
    A. Scientists’ struggle stories can influence readers’ beliefs.
    B. Students are more motivated by achievement stories.
    C. Science ability has nothing to do with efforts.
    D. Low-performing students tend to feel connected to scientists.
    D
As the climate crisis speeds up, Europe is warming faster than any other region, according to a new State of the Climate in Europe report from the World Meteorological Organization.
The WMO report comes ahead of the UN’s international climate summit in Egypt, and is one in a series of reports over the past several weeks that show how the world is off-track on its climate goals. Not only are countries missing the mark on their efforts to reduce planet-warming fossil fuel emissions(排放物), but measurements show temperatures are already skyrocketing.
Some continents are feeling that rise more than others. Wednesday’s report shows temperatures in Europe have increased at more than twice the global average over the past 30 years — at a rate of about 0.5 degrees Celsius per decade.
Recent reports show how the region’s temperature rise is fueling extreme weather.
Year-to-date through July, the number of wildfires in the EU was four times the 15-year average. A deadly, record-breaking heatwave in the UK harmed public health and bent infrastructure(基础设施). Exceptional drought troubled the continent this summer, drying up some of the world’s most economically important rivers. And that drought came on the heels of some of the most destructive floods Europe has ever seen.
“Europe presents a live picture of a warming world and reminds us that even well-prepared societies are not safe from impacts of extreme weather events,” said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas in a forward on the report.
“European society is vulnerable(易受伤害的) to climate variability and change, but Europe is also at the forefront of the international effort to address climate change and to develop innovative solutions to adapt to the new climate Europeans will have to live with,” Carlo Buontempo, director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, said in a statement.
Taalas said in his forward that although Europe’s pace on cutting planet-warming emissions has been “good,” their ambition on this front “should be further increased.”
    32. What can we learn about the world’s climate goals from the WMO report?
    A. They are unrealistic. B. They are easy to reach.
    C. They are taken seriously. D. They are far from being achieved.
    33. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
    A. The economic losses in Europe.
    B. The causes of the climate crisis in Europe.
    C. The increase of extreme weather in Europe.
    D. The most destructive natural disaster in Europe.
    34. What is Buontempo’s attitude towards Europe’s effort to fight climate change?
    A. Doubtful. B. Favorable. C. Unclear. D. Intolerant.
    35. What should Europe do to further cut emissions according to Taalas?
    A. Take the lead. B. Set a higher goal.
    C. Make better preparations. D. Carry on their good work.

“My favorite superhero,” Sebastian started reading in front of his whole class. Then he stopped. He was nervous about reading his essay. “Go on, Sebastian,” the teacher encouraged.
“My mum is my favorite superhero,” he continued. “Some might laugh at me for saying something like that, but my mum is the most hard-working person in the world. She raised me and my two brothers alone, and we have never lacked anything. Our family is the most important to her.”
Sebastian wet his lips before he continued reading. “My mum promised to get us a house by the end of the year. We live in a trailer — a vehicle without an engine. It’s a little small with three boys. I don’t know if my mum can keep her promise because she had an accident recently, so I’m helping out, too.”
“How are you helping?” a teen girl asked.
“Hush, everyone. Let Sebastian finish reading, ”Mrs. Evans gently scolded the class
“My mum is a street sweeper for the city, but she’s been staying home, trying to get better. She’s on paid sick leave. Someone has to fill in for her. So I went to her boss and started doing her job. I rake(耙)the leaves outside into piles mostly because they’re falling so often now. But I realized how hard it was and that a real superhero doesn’t wear a cape(斗篷) or go on adventures. A real hero takes care of his family, and I hope to grow up and be half the hero my mum is. Thank you.”
Then came a moment of silence. After that, the rest of the class read their essays too, and Sebastian started to a bit silly because they all talked about superheroes like Iron Man, Thor, and Wonder Woman. He was only one who had written about a real person.
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
He asked Mrs. Evans about it at the end of their class, feeling somewhat embarrassed. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

根据第一段的“It carries out the mission “Preservation through Education” by educating visitors about the preservation of the environment and the inter-dependence of all living things.(它通过教育游客了解保护环境和所有生物的相互依存性,完成“通过教育保护野生动物”的任务)”可知,STAR Eco Station的目标是提高保护野生动物的认识。故选B。
根据Field trips部分中的“Throughout the field trip, students learn about the latest developments in environmental protection and the ways in which wildlife interacts with various ecosystems.(在整个实地考察过程中,学生们学习了环境保护方面的最新进展,以及野生动物与各种生态系统相互作用的方式)”可知,学生在实地考察中能了解生物是如何相互影响的。故选D。
根据Note部分中的“Our regular public tours times are subject to change without notice.(我们常规的公众参观时间如有更改,恕不另行通知)”可知,由导游陪同的旅游,游客应该知道参观时间有可能有更改。
根据文章第二段内容“Many of these same students struggled to imagine themselves as scientists, citing concerns such as ‘I’m not good at science’ and ‘Even if I work hard, I will not do well.’ It’s easy for them to see a scientist’s work as arising from an inborn talent.(同样是这些学生中的许多人都很难将自己想象成科学家,理由是“我不擅长科学”和“即使我努力工作,也不会做得很好”。他们很容易将科学家的工作视为天生的才能。)”可知,这些学生认为能够成为科学家是天生的才能,“自己不擅长”或“即使努力也无法做好”这样的理由可以看作为他们缺乏自信,从而很难将自己想象成科学家。故选B项。
    【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段内容“Researchers at Teachers College, Columbia University and the University of Washington designed an intervention to change students’ beliefs that scientific achievement reflects ability rather than effort by exposing students to stories of how accomplished scientists struggled and overcame challenges in their scientific efforts.(教师学院、哥伦比亚大学和华盛顿大学的研究人员设计了一种干预措施,让学生了解有成就的科学家在科学努力中如何努力和克服挑战的故事,从而改变学生们认为科学成就反映的是能力而不是努力的观念。)”
分析可知,非限制性定语从句“for whom exposure to struggling stories led to significantly better science-class performance than low-performing students who read achievement stories.
根据文章末尾内容“By recognizing a scientist’s struggles and introducing the growth mindset he or she applied to accomplish great works, the students were able to empathize (共情) with the scientists during their own struggles.(通过认识科学家的奋斗,并介绍他或她在完成伟大工作时所运用的成长心态,学生们能够在科学家的奋斗过程中感同身受。)” 故选A项。
    D篇:32-35. DCBB
根据第二段“The WMO report comes ahead of the UN’s international climate summit in Egypt, and is one in a series of reports over the past several weeks that show how the world is off-track on its climate goals. Not only are countries missing the mark on their efforts to reduce planet-warming fossil fuel emissions (排放物), but measurements show temperatures are already skyrocketing.(世界气象组织的这份报告是在联合国在埃及举行的国际气候峰会之前发布的,它是过去几周内一系列报告中的一份,这些报告表明世界在实现其气候目标方面偏离了轨道。各国不仅未能在减少导致地球变暖的化石燃料排放方面取得成功,而且测量结果显示,气温已经在飙升)”可知,根据世界气象组织的这份报告,世界气候目标远未达成。故选D。
    【33题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第五段内容“Year-to-date through July, the number of wildfires in the EU was four times the 15-year average. A deadly, record-breaking heatwave in the UK harmed public health and bent infrastructure (基础设施). Exceptional drought troubled the continent this summer, drying up some of the world’s most economically important rivers. And that drought that came on the heels of some of the most destructive floods Europe has ever seen.(今年截至7月,欧盟的野火数量是15年平均水平的四倍。一场致命的、破纪录的热浪袭击了英国,损害了公众健康,破坏了基础设施。今年夏天,异常的干旱困扰着欧洲大陆,使世界上一些最重要的经济河流干涸。干旱紧随欧洲有史以来最具破坏性的洪水而来)”可知,本段主要讲述了欧洲极端天气的增加。故选C。
    【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中Buontempo说的话“European society is vulnerable (易受伤害的) to climate variability and change, but Europe is also at the forefront of the international effort to address climate change and to develop innovative solutions to adapt to the new climate Europeans will have to live with(欧洲社会很容易受到气候变化和变化的影响,但在应对气候变化和开发创新解决方案以适应欧洲人将不得不忍受的新气候方面,欧洲也走在国际努力的前沿)”可推知,Buontempo对于欧洲应对气候变化的努力持支持态度。
根据最后一段“Taalas said in his forward that although Europe’s pace on cutting planet-warming emissions has been ‘good,’ their ambition on this front ‘should be further increased.’(Taalas在他的文章中说,尽管欧洲在减少温室气体排放方面的步伐一直‘不错’,但他们在这方面的雄心‘应该进一步加大’)”可知,Taalas认为欧洲在减少温室气体排放方面应该设置一个更高的目标。故选B。

So excited that we’ll soon meet and join in the coming-of-age ceremony in our school. Here, I’d like to share with you our plan ahead of time briefly.
For this most awaited ceremony, we’ve arranged enlightening activities, like an inspiring speech, a video from parents with their best wishes, and best of all, a unique ritual where we’ll make an oath of being responsible into adulthood. Attached is our detailed schedule. Please let me know if you have any suggestion.
How expectant that we are to have you with us through these moments. Right here waiting for you all.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
He asked Mrs. Evans about it at the end of their class, feeling somewhat embarrassed. “That’s exactly why your classmates and I were impressed, Sebastian. Not many kids understand a mother’s selfless love and devotion to her kids. As far as I’m concerned, you were the only one who understood the assignment. Your mother must be proud of you,” she responded. Hearing the teacher’s words, Sebastian felt very happy. In the days that followed, he was more active in the cleaning tasks assigned to him.
One Sunday Sebastian was raking leaves when he saw his classmates coming to him. They held rakes, brooms and rubbish bags in their hands. Before he knew it, his classmates were raking leaves and picking up litter. Suddenly, he found his teacher coming over. “Hi,Sebastian! The entire class were so moved by your essay that we decided to help you out until your mother fully recovered,” she explained cheerfully. Sebastian looked at everyone, not knowing how to express his gratitude. He never thought his article could inspire others to be super heroes. Now he is not doubtful about the promise his mother had made
