Living abroad requires a small adjustment and balancing of cultures.Moving from Scotland to Austriathe differences aren't so greatperhapsas moving to Asia or Africa. But things are still different enough to be unsettling (使人不安的)

One of the first differences I noticed was the opening hours of shops here.During the weeksupermarkets close at 730 pm.at the latest. On Sundays, they aren't open at all.On my first weekend here, I wasn't at all prepared for this. I planned to go into town to pick up things I'd forgotten to bring.I wanted to get some groceriestooafter a few days of eating out. A friend had warned me that nothing was open on Sundaysbut I didn't realize she was serious. So, I wandered around town, coming across shop after shop with doors closed.

I ate out again that Sunday, and I learned my lesson. To begin with, I thought it was highly inconvenient. What if I ran out of milk in the evening, or wanted to buy biscuits before bedIn the UK, I was so used to large supermarkets, which stayed open until at least 10 pm.if not for twentyfour hours. But nowI have to buy food every Saturday. “What do people do here on Sundays” I asked my flatmate. She just looked at me.“Nothing .” she replied.

If it's inconvenient, then there's also something nice about it.Who needs to be able to buy soup or soap or bread twenty four hours a dayNo one really needs to of course. But it's nice, too, to have Sundays completely free from material worries.Sundays here are all about relaxing for hours in coffee shops and spending time with friends. Sunday is a day of rest.

People in the UK often complain“I thought Sundays were meant to be a day of restwhile rushing to workdoing chores(家庭杂务) or standing in queues in shops.Wellhere in Austriait really is a day of rest. It's differentbut it's a difference I can definitely get used to.

24Where does the writer probably come from?

    AAustria.    BBritain.

    CAsia. DAfrica.

25How did the writer feel when he was told shops didn't open on Sundays?

    AUnhappy. BBored.

    CDelighted. DUnbelievable.

26What do Austrians usually do on Sundays?

ADo nothing but rest.                BEat out with families.

CWork hard at home.                DDo some shopping.

27.What’s the writer’s final attitude towards no shop being open on Sundays?

    A.critical    B. doubtful    C. supportive     D. opposed

                              Common-cold Sense

You can’t beat it, but you don’t have to join it. Maybe it got the name “common cold” because it’s more common in winter. The fact is, though, being cold doesn’t have anything to do with getting one. Colds are caused by the spread of rhinoviruses(鼻病毒), and, at least so far, medical science is better at telling you how to avoid getting one than how to get rid of one.

Children are the most common way cold viruses are spread to adults, because they have more colds than adults—an average of about eight per year. Why do kids seem so much more easily to get colds than their parents? Simple. They haven’t had the opportunity to become immune(免疫的) to many cold viruses. There are more than 150 different cold viruses, and you never have the same one twice. Being infected by one makes you immune to it –but only it.

Colds are usually spread by direct contact, not sneezing or coughing. From another person’s hand to your hand and then to your nose or eyes is the most common route. The highest concentration of cold viruses anywhere is found under the thumbnails(拇指甲)of a boy, although the viruses can survive for hours on skin or other smooth surfaces.

Hygiene (卫生)is your best defense. Wash your hands frequently, preferably with a disinfectant(消毒剂) soap, especially when children in your household have colds.

But even careful hygiene won’t ward off every cold. So, what works when a coughing, sneezing, runny nose strikes?

The old prescription(处方)of two aspirins, lots of water, and bed rest is a good place to start. But you’ll also find some of the folk remedies worth trying. Hot mixtures of sugar (or honey), lemon, and water have real benefits.

    28. According to the passage, you may have a cold because of ________ .

      A. cold weather                         B. the spread of rhinoviruses

      C. another person’s coughing              D. washing hands too often

    30. According to the passage, when you are having a cold, ________.

Younger students experience school bullying(校园欺凌) more frequently than older ones, and male students are bullied more than their female students, a research found.

It also found that nearly half of students had been intentionally hit or knocked down by classmates. About 6 percent said they are bullied on campus every day. The research also found that students from ordinary schools experienced more bullying than the ones from key schools, and children from poor families are more likely to be bullied at school.

Being bullied can have a negative effect on a child’s personal development and academic performance, according to Zhou Jinyan, a researcher who led the study at Beijing Normal University. “Children being bullied will find it hard to trust others,” Zhou said. “They may often feel anxiety, anger, hatred or depression. These emotions will further destroy their ability to control their own life.”

In recent years, bullying on Chinese campuses has been frequently reported and has attracted widespread attention and concern. The most recent incident to arouse heated discussions took place in December at Beijing’s Zhongguancun No. 2 Primary School. A fourth-grade student was bullied and laughed at by classmates, causing him acute stress disorder.

The Supreme People’s Procuratorate(检察院) received about 1,900 cases related to school bullying in 2016. Meanwhile, there was a notable increase in bullying reports including middle school students from 14 to 18 years old.

Zhou came up with some ways to solve the problem, including improving communication between teachers, parents and students and trying to develop more harmonious relationships among children. She said it was strongly suggested that parents try to be involved in their children’s educational experience, as their presence and companionship have proved effective in reducing bullying and its negative effects.

    32. Who is the most likely to be bullied according to the passage?

       A. A 17-year-old boy from a rich family       B. A 10-year-old boy from a poor family

       C. A 17-year-old girl from an ordinary school   D. A 10-year-old girl from a key school

    33. Being bullied will cause students to go through the following EXCEPT________.

       A. a lack of trust in other people B. a drop in academic performance

       C. a lack of confidence in themselves D. a drop in the sense of anger

    34. We can learn from the text that________.

       A. bullying on campus has been reduced in recent years

       B. students who enjoy parents’ companionship will be bullying-free

       C. parents and schools should take further action against bullying at school

       D. bullying at school usually has little effect on students when they grow up

    35. The passage is likely to appear in ________

       A. a science report                B. an advertisement

       C. a novel                       D. a news report

    第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5, 满分12.5分)

    阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选山可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Many adults see rainy days as perfect for relaxing and curling up with a good book or a favorite movie.   36   They want to run, play, and release their pent-up被困住的energy. The situation isn't hopeless, though. There are many rainy day activities that are perfect for children of all ages.

As soon as kids begin to feel uptight and frustrated from being trapped in the house, they become destructive, and the kitchen table and chairs become jungle gyms. In this case, help them to release their energy in a productive manner. Try turning the music loud and dancing.  37

Rainy days often lead to a desire for sweet treats, so make baking one of kids’ favorite rainy day activities. Grab the kids and make some cookies, cakes or pies. Allow the kids to do most of the work, except for handling sharp objects or touching the stove or oven.   38   They will also be content with a stomach full of warm cookies and milk.

39   These give the kids a chance to develop their imagination and improve their fine motor skills (精细运动技能). Set the kids up in an area of the house that is easily cleaned up. Allow them to explore their creativity.

Playing dress-up is one of a kid's favorite rainy day activities. Pull out some clothes that aren't worn often and have the kids dress up.   40    If a video camera is handy, record it and let the kids watch it with a bucket of popcorn.

    A. Try putting together a game of mud football.

    B. Rainy day activities often include art projects.

    C. Make it even more exciting by putting on plays.

    D. On the other hand, many kids see rainy days as boring.

    E. Rain won’t hurt the kids, and can be a nice change of pace.

    F. After their energy is released, the kids can do quiet rainy day activities.

    G. The kids will be very proud of themselves for completing such an activity.

    第二节(满分25分)

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

New Year was just around the corner. I was second grade then, 7 years old. One day,

on my way home from school, a lady gave me a piece of paper saying that the neighborhood was asking people to give New Year presents to those who needed them. When I got home, I showed my mother the paper and said that I wanted to take part in this plan. My mother thought this was a very good idea and encouraged me to spread kindness to others less fortunate than us. She said we would become “Neighborhood Angels (天使)”.

Several days later, my mother said, “Get ready, and we will go.” “Where are we going?” I asked my mother. “I will drive you to Boots Department Store to buy something you think would be suitable for a neighborhood present.”, she replied. As we went into the store, my mother gave me £20 to pay for the present. Then she said, “I’ll see you outside in the car.” She left me alone to do the shopping. I was not used to buying things on my own, as I had always been with one of my parents before. Everything seemed very strange and confusing to me, but I carried on. I asked myself what I should buy and for whom. An idea quickly occurred to me. There was a poor boy called Ralph who lived in our neighborhood.

I used to see him often without a jacket during the freezing winter months, so I decided,

then and there, to buy him a warm jacket. I looked at many jackets and eventually chose a heavy blue one. The price was just within my spending limit. The assistant at the checkout asked, “Is this for someone?”, as I paid for the jacket happily. I said it was, and she wished me a Happy New Year. I felt as if I were a real “Neighborhood Angel”.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Paragraph 1: That evening,my mother helped me pack the jacket in beautiful paper.
