On the first day of school, our professor challenged us to get to know someone we didn't already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned round to find a little old lady looking up at me with a smile. She said, "Hi, handsome! I'm Rose. I'm 87 years old. Can I give you a hug?"
I laughed, "Of course! Why are you in college at such a young, innocent(幼稚的)age?" I asked.
She jokingly replied, "I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, have children and then travel around. "
"No seriously. "I asked. I was curious why she took on this challenge at this age.
"I always dreamed of having a college education, and now I'm getting one, " she told me.
We became friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk for hours. Listening to this human "time machine" as she shared her years of wisdom and experience with me was so interesting. Over the year, Rose became a campus icon(校园偶像)and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and enjoyed the attention from other students. She was living it up.
At the end of the term, we invited Rose to speak at a student gathering. I'll never forget what she taught us. "We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only a few secrets to staying young. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. There are many people walking around who are dead, and they don’t even know it, " she said.
"There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability, " she added. "But growing up requires finding the opportunity (机会) in change. Have no regrets. People usually don't have regrets for what they did, but rather for things they did not do. "
Rose taught us by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be.

Our planet is heating up because of the greenhouse effect. This is one of the reasons why Earth is seeing more extreme weather events, such as heat waves, forest fires and foods each year. But what exactly is the greenhouse effect, and what can we do to reduce it?
Let's first think about a greenhouse - you may have one in your garden! It's a glass structure that protects plants against low temperatures by trapping(聚集)heat inside. But, while this helps your plants grow, Earth is trapping heat in the same way, and it's causing global warning. When fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and gas, are burnt for power, carbon dioxide is released(排放)as a waste product. It enters the atmosphere and acts like a blanket around the planet, which means heat radiation can’t escape and the temperature increases. Eunice Foote, a scientist tested the effects of sunlight on different gases. Her results showed that carbon dioxide traps heat more than other gases. ?
So, what can we do to reduce the greenhouse effect? The UN recommends using more energy- efficient electrical appliances at home and changing to LED light bulbs. Also, by washing your clothes at 30° instead of a higher temperature, around 40% less electricity is used over a year, according to the Energy Saving Trust. A change in diet is also something to consider because plant -based foods need less land and water to be produced. So, changing saves energy and lovers emissions(排放物), which contribute to climate change.
We only have one planet, so let's try and take care of it as much as we can.

    Opening times: Mon - Sat from 10 a. m. to 6 p. m.

Xu Beihong (1895-1953) was important in modern Chinese folk art. During his lifetime, he developed the tradition of combining(融合) poetry with painting. Across this painting, named Racing Horse, we can see a horse running at high speed like a missile across the sky. Xu cleverly drew in black ink to show the moving hair on the horse’s mane and tail.

Cabbage is a well - known example of Qi’s works. The tiny insect near the cabbage has some red on its back. Its black eyes, which are fixed on the cabbage, show the creature’s interest in the vegetable. Qi Baishi’s style of painting often leaves the audience guessing and makes them use their imagination.

Chen Yifei (1946-2005) was a very successful artist. His soft portraits(肖像) of beautiful women are very valuable. In 1997, one of his paintings sold for US $ 503,000. The painting, named Poppy, is a typical example of Chen’s style. In the painting, a young woman sits alone and is deep in thought. Her hand holding the fan is elegantly positioned on the table.

Welcome home! The three Chinese astronauts, Wang Yaping, Zhai Zhigang and Ye Guangfu, safely landed back on Earth on the morning of April 16, 2022 after a record-reaking six-month mission in space. The 42-year-old Wang Yaping became the first female astronaut to enter Tiangong space station.
Wang’s space dream started in 2003, when China sent its first astronaut Yang Liwei into space. At that time, Wang was a pilot in the Chinese army. After having safe flights for 1,600 hours over nine years, Wang was a strong candidate(候选人) to become an astronaut in 2010. She pushed herself hard, getting the same training as men. “The space environment won’t change because you are a woman,” she told Xinhua.
The hardest part is the high-G training. Sitting in a spinning (旋转的) machine, Wang would become blind for a while because her brain was short of blood. “There’s a red button.” said Wang. “If you can’t bear it, you can press it to stop.” But Wang never used it. “There is no such red button in my heart.” That strong spirit finally made her dream come true in 2013. She joined the team for the Shenzhou X mission.
Wang said that as astronauts, women have their own advantages. Women may be more patient and can better deal with loneliness. Women’s hearts are also easier to adapt(适应) to the weightless environment, making them more suitable for long-term missions.

When you are shopping for the week’s food, you may get a large box or two of bottled water. On your way to a soccer game, it’s easy to take a cold one out of the fridge, right?
But all those plastic bottles use a lot of fossil fuels(矿物燃料). In fact, Americans buy more bottled water than any other country in the world, about 29 billion water bottles a year. In order to make all these bottles, 17 million barrels (桶) of crude oil are used. That’s enough oil to keep a million cars going for twelve months.
Americans drink bottled water because they think it is better than water out of the tap, but that’s not true. In the United States, local governments make sure water from the tap is safe. People love the convenience(便利) of bottled water. But may-be if they realized the problems it causes, they would try drinking from a glass at home or carrying water in a steel container instead of a plastic bottle.
Plastic bottles pollute the environment but recycling can help—instead of going out with the rubbish, plastic bottles can be turned into useful items. Sadly, for every six water bottles we use, only one makes it to the recycling bin. The rest are sent to landfills. Or, even worse, they end up as rubbish on the land and in rivers, lakes, and the ocean. Plastic bottles take many hundreds of years to disintegrate under the ground.
Remember this: Recycling one plastic bottle can save enough energy to power a 60-watt (瓦) light bulb for six hours.

With her eyes feeling increasingly tired and her sight blurry, 16-year-old Sun Run went to the hospital with her parents in January. She was shocked when she found out that her eyesight dropped from 5.0 to 4.6 in only a term. “A few of my friends have had the same experience recently,” Sun said.
In fact, poor eyesight among Chinese primary and high school students rose from 59.2 percent to 70.6 percent in the first six months of 2020, according to the Ministry of Education.
By 2050, half of the world’s population(nearly 5 billion)will be nearsighted, according to a study in the journal Ophthalmology. The main reason for this is that people’s lifestyles have changed. They spend less time outdoors and more time looking at screens.
To protect students’ eyesight, the Chinese government has worked out new requirements for school supplies and equipment that will take effect on March 1, 2022. For example, according to the requirements, the size of text in students’ textbooks should be no small than nine-point. Teachers should also avoid using projectors or other multimedia equipment that are too bright, Beijing Daily reported.
There are also requirements for desk and classroom lights. For example, these lights should give off as little blue light as possible because blue light is bad for our eyes. Many of the electronic devices we use every day, including our phones and computer screens, give off blue light.
Chinese government has also taken other steps to protect students’ eyesight in China. In May 2020, the National Health Commission required schools to make sure that students have at least two hours of outdoor activity a day.
