Disaster! This word really meant that morning. I had a toothache. And I’d been in an argument with a friend. Her words still hurt: “The trouble with you is that you won’t put yourself in my place. Can’t you see things from my point of view?” I shook my head stubbornly—and felt the ache in my tooth. I’d thought I could hold out till my dentist came back from holiday, but the pain was really unbearable. I started calling the dentists in the phone book, but no one could see me immediately. Finally, at about lunchtime, I got lucky.
“If you come by right now,” the receptionist said, “the dentist will fit you in.”
I took keys and rushed to my car. But suddenly I began to doubt about the dentist. What kind of dentist would be so eager to treat someone at such short notice? Why wasn’t he as busy as the others?
In the dentist’s office, I sat down and looked around. I saw nothing but the bare walls and I became even more worried. The assistant noticed my nervousness and placed her warm hand over my ice-cold one.
When I told her my fears, she laughed and said, “Don’t worry. The dentist is very good.”
“How long do I have to wait for him?” I asked impatiently.

Jadav Payeng lives on Majuli in Assam, India—the world’s largest river island. In 1979, flooding (洪水) took away a large part of forest along the Brabmaputra River. Wildlife were left without enough shade (荫), and Payeng watched helpless animals begin to die off from the heat.
Deeply saddened, then the 16-year-old decided he would plant a young tree in the barren (贫瘠的) land every day for the foreseeable future and now, 39 years later, his woodland covers 1,360 acres and it is home to Bengal tigers, rhinos, vultures and 115 elephants.
Amazingly, the work didn’t come to light until the autumn of 2007, when he was accidentally discovered seeding (播种) his forest by wildlife lover Jitu Kalita.
Kalita had borrowed a boat to take pictures of birds around the Brahmaputra River, which runs around Majuli Island, and while travelling through the waters he saw something unusual. Kalita recalls: “I saw something strange... it looked like a forest far in the distance. I began walking towards it. When I reached it, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I had found a forest in the middle of a barren wasteland.” He was amazed by Payeng’s story and spent time learning about his lifetime’s work.
Payeng, who makes money with his wife selling cows’ milk to local villages, still works hard taking care of his forest and says he will continue to plant young trees and seeds until the last moment of his life. He said at first that planting was very time-consuming (耗时的) but now it’s much easier because the trees seed themselves.
Payeng’s work has been recognized far and wide and in 2015 he received one of India’s highest civilian awards, the Padma Shri.
Payeng says his dream is to fill up Majuli Island with forest again. Standing next to the first tree that he planted, he said: “People from around the world come here now because this forest amazes them.”

Baseball was always where my heart lay. However, my father did not care for baseball. Two recreational activities he enjoyed were golfing and fishing, neither of which I considered a real sport. He didn’t talk much and he wasn’t good at expressing himself. Frankly, I wasn’t entirely certain he cared about me. In a way, my father was like a familiar stranger I saw every day.
One day, watching the play on television made me want a glove of my own. To my surprise, my father said he wanted one, too. He was on the portly side, but then again, one of the famous pitchers (投手) on the Mets was even fatter. So I thought, why not?
We bought two gloves, and that evening, he suggested we go out to the courtyard and toss (掷) the ball around. I’d already practiced catching and throwing at school, but I could tell this was the first time for my father, because every time he caught the ball, it landed directly in his palm. If you’ve ever caught a ball with a baseball glove, you know how much this hurts.
But my father caught ball after ball this way. Slap! Slap! He winced (龇牙咧嘴). After about five minutes, I told him I’d had enough. It wasn’t out of mercy, but for my own self-interest. Neighborhood kids were watching and would no doubt tease me later for having an old man who didn’t know how to properly catch a baseball. When my father took the glove off, his palm was red and swollen.
Dad, who passed away 11 years ago, never told me he loved me. But that sound of the baseball landing in the soft flesh of his hand over and over again—it spoke its own tender language, though at the time, all I felt was shame.

“I won it for public speaking. I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the year as the blue ribbon winner. The government has promised to help the poor farmers in the northern part of the country who haven’t seen rain for nearly two years. And in Sydney a group of school children are successfully rescued from a plane which landed in the sea shortly after takeoff. Transport workers are on strike in Melbourne asking for a pay raise. And the strike may spread to other states.
Now let’s focus on the school children. They were travelling in a plane from Sydney to Queensland to take part in a musical concert. They found themselves swimming for the shore when their plane had to land in the sea just three minutes after taking off from Sydney Airport. The pilot managed to bring the aircraft and its 50 passengers down safely in the calm waters of Botany Bay where boats were able to come to the rescue of the children. It was a weekend, and there were hundreds of boats in the bay enjoying the good weather. This undoubtedly helped the rescue operation. The children said they owed their lives to the skill of the pilot. But the pilot replied modestly that it was all part of a day’s work. However, all their musical instruments were lost and they never got to play at their concert.

Jadav Payeng lives on Majuli in Assam, India—the world’s largest river island. In 1979, flooding (洪水) took away a large part of forest along the Brabmaputra River. Wildlife were left without enough shade (荫), and Payeng watched helpless animals begin to die off from the heat.
Deeply saddened, then the 16-year-old decided he would plant a young tree in the barren (贫瘠的) land every day for the foreseeable future and now, 39 years later, his woodland covers 1,360 acres and it is home to Bengal tigers, rhinos, vultures and 115 elephants.
Amazingly, the work didn’t come to light until the autumn of 2007, when he was accidentally discovered seeding (播种) his forest by wildlife lover Jitu Kalita.
Kalita had borrowed a boat to take pictures of birds around the Brahmaputra River, which runs around Majuli Island, and while travelling through the waters he saw something unusual. Kalita recalls: “I saw something strange... it looked like a forest far in the distance. I began walking towards it. When I reached it, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I had found a forest in the middle of a barren wasteland.” He was amazed by Payeng’s story and spent time learning about his lifetime’s work.
Payeng, who makes money with his wife selling cows’ milk to local villages, still works hard taking care of his forest and says he will continue to plant young trees and seeds until the last moment of his life. He said at first that planting was very time-consuming (耗时的) but now it’s much easier because the trees seed themselves.
Payeng’s work has been recognized far and wide and in 2015 he received one of India’s highest civilian awards, the Padma Shri.
Payeng says his dream is to fill up Majuli Island with forest again. Standing next to the first tree that he planted, he said: “People from around the world come here now because this forest amazes them.”

Baseball was always where my heart lay. However, my father did not care for baseball. Two recreational activities he enjoyed were golfing and fishing, neither of which I considered a real sport. W: What I don’t understand is why you haven’t got more hobbies—your friends seem to have lots of different things they like doing, don’t they?
M: That’s not... well, anyway, they’re just things you do inside, you know, collecting stamps, I mean so boring, or like computer games. I’m just not interested in that kind of thing.
W: Yes, well, I do understand that, but actually I’m quite pleased about the computer games. There’s table tennis: now, you can play that indoors. And you are great at that, aren’t you?
M: Oh Mum, I used to be, but now I’m completely out of practice. I’d lose to anyone.
W: So maybe you should go and get some practice.

M: Hey, is that you Joan? I can’t believe it!
W: Johnson! I haven’t seen you for ages. It’s so good to run into you like this!
M: That’s for sure! So, what are you doing these days? Are you still going to the health club?
W: Not any more. We’ve moved to Eastgate.
M: Eastgate! That’s twenty kiloetres from here!
W: Yeah, I know. So I’ve got a long drive to work these days. But we bought a really big house with a nice garden.
M: Great! You’re a landscape gardener, aren’t you? So you’d be working much more in the summer.
W: Uh huh. But actually I’ve been working as a city planner for the last year or so.
M: Oh... Why did you change jobs?
W: Well... Two years ago I was working so hard that I never had any time to be with my kids. They were growing up really quickly, but I was always driving around from one project to the next. So I was hardly ever spending time at home.
M: Well, it’s better now, I expect. You’re working for the city, I suppose.
W: You mean in the planning department? No, actually I’m running my own company.

W: This is the 6 o’clock news for Tuesday 25 November. And first the headlines:
The government has promised to help the poor farmers in the northern part of the country who haven’t seen rain for nearly two years. And in Sydney a group of school children are successfully rescued from a plane which landed in the sea shortly after takeoff. Transport workers are on strike in Melbourne asking for a pay raise. And the strike may spread to other states.
Now let’s focus on the school children. They were travelling in a plane from Sydney to Queensland to take part in a musical concert. They found themselves swimming for the shore when their plane had to land in the sea just three minutes after taking off from Sydney Airport. The pilot managed to bring the aircraft and its 50 passengers down safely in the calm waters of Botany Bay where boats were able to come to the rescue of the children. It was a weekend, and there were hundreds of boats in the bay enjoying the good weather. This undoubtedly helped the rescue operation. The children said they owed their lives to the skill of the pilot. But the pilot replied modestly that it was all part of a day’s work. However, all their musical instruments were lost and they never got to play at their concert.
