Text 10 18-20BCA
In honor of the fantastic grades on your final exams and projects, and because this is one of the last school days of the year, we'll do something different today. You'll enter the 10th grade next year,(18)and your English classes will be very academic in order to start preparing you for university. So, to celebrate the few remaining days of Grade Nine, today we're going to watch a film from The Fast and the Furious movie series,(19)But first, we'll do a quick lesson on friendly greetings and expressions you might not have learned in school. In English movies and TV shows, you’ll seldom hear people saying, "I'm fine. Thank you.”This is because there are more casual ways of greeting and responding to your friends. For example, instead of saying "How are you?”,friends can say “What's up?”,“How's it going?” or “How're you doing?”And as opposed to saying “Goodbye”, friends might say “See you later!”,"Take care!” or "Have a good one!”Now, pick whichever ones you'd like and use them to chat with the classmate next to you. Then, a dozen brave students will volunteer to demonstrate these greetings. After that, I'll award them with candy. So, quickly, practice these phrases. Then, we'll do our demonstration and finish off with the film. (20)Go!

Four Books Worth Reading
The Humane Home by Sarah Lozanova
The book contains seven chapters that cover topics like energy efficiency, water conservation, passive solar heating, building materials, air quality, choosing where to live, etc. It contains numerous little projects, from building garden beds to preserving home-grown produce. The book is a quick and easy read, easily finished in an hour or two.
An AImost Zero Waste Life by Megean Weldon
The book offers suggestions for reducing waste in every area of life, from grocery shopping, to beauty routines and clothing. In urging people to choose bamboo toothbrushes and package-free goods, Weldon never mentions a single company. This may be strategic — companies come and go and such references could potentially make the book feel out-of-date — but it could leave the reader still wondering where to start.
The Eco-Hero Handbook by Tessa Wardley
The book addresses the issue of eco-anxiety by devoting a one-page answer to a commonly-asked question and, hopefully, enabling the readers to feel like they can take action. The questions range from “Is my water usage affecting the planet and nature?” to “Which foods are responsible for the worst forest damage?” and so on.
Sustainable Home by Christine Liu

A Japanese company recently released a white crust milk bread that it hopes will curb the practice of removing the crust when making sandwiches.
Did you know that the vast majority of milk bread sandwiches made daily in Japan have their crusts removed? While crusted sandwiches do exist, the general perception is that the fluffy, white part of Japanese shokupan milk bread is tastier than the brown crust. This perception dates back to a time long ago when the crust was harder to chew through, but things are definitely a lot different today. The crust is nice and soft, but people still seem to prefer crusted sandwiches. That results in a lot of food waste, but one company hopes to change that with an innovative white crust shokupan bread.
Tokyo Chef Sugimoto and his team at the Imperial Hotel Co., Ltd. spent six months developing an innovative type of bread that they claim eliminates the need to get rid of the crust. People have been coming up with all sorts of ways to recycle bread crusts in order to curb food waste, but Sugimoto’s idea was to create a crust that didn’t have to be discarded in the first place.
Although Imperial Hotel did not fully disclose the secret behind its new white crust bread, it did mention that it is baked slowly at a lower temperature than regular shokupan bread, which results in a white color all through the bread and a more moist texture.
Founded in 1890 by Japanese aristocracy, Imperial Hotel used to serve crustless milk bread sandwiches to its customers, but starting on October 1st of this year, they will be switching to this new white crust bread, thus decreasing its food waste considerably.
The white crust bread will be served in the Imperial Hotel’s restaurants and at banquets, but people will also be able to purchase it from Gargantua Delicatessen, a luxury bakery that has been operating since 1971.
24.What is the difference between the present and past bread made in Japan?
A.It used to be tastier and easier to chew through.
B.It was more economical compared to the present bread.
C.It is tastier and overcomes food waste.
D.It is more expensive than the past bread.
25.What is the purpose of this new type of bread?
A.To make more profits.
B.To occupy the majority of market share.
C.To improve people’s living standards.
D.To reduce the food waste.
26.What is the meaning of the underlined word?
A.stimulates B.removes
C.defeats D.lifts
27.To get the new type of bread, a customer can ___________.
A.purchase it from the appointed luxury bakery
B.wait till October1st of this year nationwide
C.place an order in advance online
D.get it anytime they like
【答案】24.C 25.D 26.B 27.A
根据第二段第二句“While crusted sandwiches do exist, the general perception is that the fluffy, white part of Japanese shokupan milk bread is tastier than the brown crust. (虽然有面包皮的三明治存在,但人们普遍认为,日式炒面牛奶面包蓬松、白色的部分比棕色的面包皮更美味。)”以及最后两句“The crust is nice and soft, but people still seem to prefer crusted sandwiches. That results in a lot of food waste, but one company hopes to change that with an innovative white crust shokupan bread. (面包皮又好又软,但人们似乎还是更喜欢夹面包皮的三明治。这导致了大量的食物浪费,但一家公司希望通过一种创新的白皮炒面面包来改变这种状况。)”可知,现在和过去日本面包的区别是它更美味,而且克服了食物浪费。故选C。
25.细节理解题。根据第二段末句“That results in a lot of food waste, but one company hopes to change that with an innovative white crust shokupan bread. (这导致了大量的食物浪费,但一家公司希望通过一种创新的白皮炒面面包来改变这种状况。)”可知,新型的面包的目的是减少食物浪费。故选D。
26.词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“an innovative type of bread (一种创新的面包)”可知,这是一种新型面包,结合下文“People have been coming up with all sorts of ways to recycle bread crusts in order to curb food waste, but Sugimoto’s idea was to create a crust that didn’t have to be discarded in the first place. (为了减少食物浪费,人们想出了各种回收面包皮的方法,但杉本的想法是创造一种从一开始就不必被丢弃的面包皮。)”可知,Sugimoto发明的新面包不用丢弃面包皮,所以“they claim eliminates the need to get rid of the crust.”
根据最后一段“The white crust bread will be served in the Imperial Hotel’s restaurants and at banquets, but people will also be able to purchase it from Gargantua Delicatessen, a luxury bakery that has been operating since 1971. (这种白面包将在帝国酒店的餐厅和宴会上供应,但人们也可以从Gargantua Delicatessen购买,这是一家自1971年以来一直经营的豪华面包店。)”可知,要得到这种新型面包,顾客可以从指定的豪华面包店购买。故选A。

A large analysis looked at hundreds of factors that might influence the risk of heart failure and found one dietary factor in particular that was associated with a lower risk: drinking coffee.
The analysis included extensive, decades-long data from three large health studies with 21,361 participants, and used a method called machine learning that uses computers to find meaningful patterns in large amounts of data.
“Usually, researchers pick things that they suspect would be risk factors for heart failure—smoking, for example—and then look at smokers vs nonsmokers,” said the senior author, Dr. David P. Kao at the University of Colorado. “But machine learning identifies variables(变量)that are predictive of either increased or decreased risk, but that you haven’t necessarily thought of.”
Using this technique, Dr. Kao and his colleagues found 204 variables that were associated with the risk of heart failure. Then they looked at the 41 strongest factors, which included smoking, blood pressure and the consumption of various foods. In all studies, coffee drinking was associated more strongly than any other dietary factor with a decreased long-term risk of heart failure.
Drinking a cup a day or less had zero effect, but two cups a day contributed to a 31 percent reduced risk, and three cups reduced the risk by 29 percent. There were not enough subjects who drank more than three cups daily to know if more coffee would decrease the risk further.
The study was not able to account for different types of coffee or brewing (冲泡)methods, or the use of additives like sugar or cream. Then should you start drinking coffee or increase the amount you already drink to reduce your risk of heart failure? “We don’t know enough from the results of this study to recommend this,” said Dr. Kao, adding that additional research would be needed.
28.What does machine learning do in the study?
A.It offers a thorough analysis. B.It compares opposite factors.
C.It finds patterns in limited data. D.It helps choose the participants.
29.What can be inferred from paragraph 5?
A.One cup a day or less is healthy. B.The more coffee, the lower the risk.
C.Two cups a day leads to the lowest risk. D.The ideal daily intake of coffee is unclear.
30.What is Dr. Kao’s attitude to the results of the study?
A.Skeptical. B.Worried. C.Cautious. D.Content.
31.What does the author mainly talk about in the text?
A.A factor in lower risk of heart failure. B.A way to avoid heart failure.
C.Reasons for drinking coffee. D.Benefits of coffee.
【答案】28.A 29.D 30.C 31.A
根据第三段最后一句“But machine learning identifies variables (变量) that are predictive of either increased or decreased risk, but that you haven’t necessarily thought of (但机器学习可以识别那些预测风险增加或减少的变量,而这些变量是你不一定考虑到的)”,以及“Using this technique, Dr. Kao and his colleagues found 204 variables that were associated with the risk of heart failure. (通过这项技术,高博士和他的同事发现了204个与心力衰竭风险相关的变量)”可知,机器学习在研究中提供了全面的分析。故选A项。
根据第五段“Drinking a cup a day or less had zero effect, but two cups a day contributed to a 31 percent reduced risk, and three cups reduced the risk by 29 percent. There were not enough subjects who drank more than three cups daily to know if more coffee would decrease the risk further.(每天喝一杯或一杯以下的咖啡没有任何效果,但是每天喝两杯可以降低31%的风险,喝三杯可以降低29%的风险。没有足够的每天喝三杯以上咖啡的研究对象,以了解更多的咖啡是否会进一步降低风险)”可知,目前只知道不喝咖啡、喝一杯咖啡、两杯咖啡以及三杯咖啡的情况分析,还没有条件找出最理想的咖啡摄入量,还不能确定是否喝两杯咖啡的人风险最低。故选D项。
30.推理判断题。根据最后一段的最后一句“‘We don’t know enough from the results of this study to recommend this,’ said Dr. Kao, adding that additional research would be needed.(‘从这项研究的结果中,我们知道的还不够多,不足以提出这样的建议,’高博士说。他还补充说,还需要进行更多的研究)”可知,高博士对研究结果持谨慎态度。故选C项。
31.主旨大意题。根据第一段“A large analysis looked at hundreds of factors that might influence the risk of heart failure and found one dietary factor in particular that was associated with a lower risk: drinking coffee.(一项大型分析研究了数百个可能影响心力衰竭风险的因素,发现一个特别的饮食因素与较低的风险有关:喝咖啡)”可知,文章将讲述通过喝咖啡来降低心力衰竭风险的这一发现。故选A项。

Lisa Gautier receives nearly a dozen parcels of human hair every day. With her San-Francisco-based non-profit organization Matter of Trust,Gautier turns donated hair into mats used to soak up oil spills on land, and booms (long tubes)used for spills at sea.
A standard way to clean up oil from land is to use mats made from polypropylene(聚丙烯). But polypropylene is a non-biodegradable plastic, and producing it ultimately means more drilling for oil. Hair,by contrast, is an environmentally friendly resource that can soak up around five times its weight in oil, according to Matter of Trust, and it is abundant.
Oil spills can pollute drinking water, endanger public health, harm plants and wildlife, and damage the economy. According to Gautier, the spills that hit the headlines only make up 5% of global oil pollution.
Megan Murray,an environmental biologist at the University of Technology Sydney, develops sustainable technologies to tackle oil spills. Her research indicates that as well as being biodegradable, human hair is often just as effective as polypropylene, and in some circumstances even better. “The hair mats are very beneficial to land spills,”says Murray but adds that when raw oil is spilled on beach sand,it is very difficult to absorb it using any of the materials she has tested. Another advantage of hair is that it costs less than conventional materials and is “globally accessible as a recycled material,” she says.
However,Murray cautions that hair mats are not a perfect solution, because they are single-use,and can only be dealt with by burning or by burying into soil which then isn’t suitable for growing food. She is now researching methods to extract the oil from a used hair mat, meaning both can be reused.
As the hair mat designs aren’t under patent, other groups have begun producing their own mats and booms. Gautier is pleased to see the movement growing.“Anyone can make a hair mat,”she says. “It creates green jobs,it cleans water,it reduces waste in landfill, and it’s promoting renewable resources.”
32.What do we know about polypropylene according to the passage?
A.It is biodegradable.
B.It is environmentally friendly.
C.People need more oil to produce it.
D.People seldom use mats made from it to clean up oil from land.
33.What does Megan Murray think of the hair mats?
A.Hair mats do no harm to soil after being burnt.
B.The effect of hair mats on terrestrial(陆地上的)spills is not very good.
C.People spend more to make hair mats than conventional materials.
D.Hair mats are not a perfect solution because they can’t be recycled now.
34.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Most oil-spill events have received widespread media coverage.
B.Lisa Gautier donated her hair to soak up oil spills on land and at sea.
C.Megan Murray goes all out to make the hair mats and the oil extracted from them reused.
D.There are many other materials used to treat oil spills on beach sand besides hair.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.How to Tackle Oil Spills
B.A Perfect Recycled Material—Human Hair
C.Take Action to Make Hair Mats And Booms
D.Human Hair Is Being Used to Clean Up Oil Spills
【答案】32.C 33.D 34.C 35.D

根据第二段的第一二句“A standard way to clean up oil from land is to use mats made from polypropylene(聚丙烯). But polypropylene is a non-biodegradable plastic, and producing it ultimately means more drilling for oil.(清理陆地油污的一个标准方法是使用聚丙烯制成的垫子。但聚丙烯是一种不可生物降解的塑料,生产它最终意味着更多的石油钻探)”可知,生产聚丙烯需要更多的石油。故选C项。
33.细节理解题。根据第五段“However,Murray cautions that hair mats are not a perfect solution, because they are single-use,and can only be dealt with by burning or by burying into soil which then isn’t suitable for growing food. She is now researching methods to extract the oil from a used hair mat, meaning both can be reused.(然而,默里警告说,发垫不是完美的解决方案,因为它们是一次性使用的,只能通过焚烧或埋进不适合种植食物的土壤中来处理。她现在正在研究从用过的发垫中提取发油的方法,这意味着两者都可以重复使用。)”可知,发垫不是完美的完美的解决方案因为他们不能被立马回收。故选D项。
34.推理判断题。根据第五段最后一句“She is now researching methods to extract the oil from a used hair mat, meaning both can be reused.(她现在正在研究从用过的发垫中提取发油的方法,这意味着两者都可以重复使用。)”

For many years, public schools taught only Euro-American cultural values and neutralized or ignored other cultural heritages. Textbooks minimized problems among groups and taught a sanitized version of history. It was assumed that everyone in the American melting pot would eventually lose or abandon those ethnic characteristics that distinguished them from mainstream Americans.____36____Current textbooks absorb a variety of ethnic individuals who have achieved success. Struggles for equality are vividly depicted, and past racism is frankly acknowledged. Cultural pluralism(多元性)is now generally recognized as the organizing principle of education, and children in American schools learn that variety and cultural diversity are assets(资产).
____37____ Elementary school students learn not only about the traditional Thanksgiving celebration in the United States, but also about other harvest holidays around the world. They learn that African tribal farmers observe harvest festivals to thank their ancestors for keeping them well and sending rain. The moon’s birthday is the start of the Chinese harvest festival called Chung Ch’ui, in which the Chinese give thanks and remember a victory over an invading army. In India, Hindu women honor Gauri, the goddess of the harvest and the protector of women. ____38____Koreans offer prayers for good harvests on Tano Day, and in Switzerland and Sweden, children carry lanterns made from vegetables to celebrate their harvest holiday. Middle School and high schools include literature from around the world offering alternative perspectives on social problems and significant historical events. Ethnic studies departments can be found in high schools and colleges. ____39____
There is some evidence that attempts at multicultural education are working. In the United States, for example, graduation rates are up. The share of high school students taking a core of academic subjects increased from 13 percent to 47 percent in the past decade. The gap between whites’ and minorities’ test scores has narrowed. These accomplishments may well be attributed to educators who daily confront diversity in their classrooms and have identified the central issues in educating a culturally diverse population. ____40____
A.Here are some approaches to multicultural education.
B.Those issues deal with learning style difference, language diversity, and gender.
C.In Africa, due to extremely hot weather, Africans suffer a lot.
D.Concrete examples of teaching diversity can be found at every grade level.
E.Today, however, schools routinely teach the experience and values of many ethnic cultures.
F.In Japan, thanksgiving is a national holiday and a time to give thanks for blessings.
G.Many schools further require that students take courses in cultural diversity.

In India, Hindu women honor Gauri, the goddess of the harvest and the protector of women. F“In Japan, thanksgiving is a national holiday and a time to give thanks for blessings(在日本,感恩节是一个全国性的节日,也是感谢上帝赐福的日子)”也是在讲述世界其他国家的节日习俗,与上文构成排比,故选项F符合语境;故选F项。

A. after在……之后;B. for因为(并列连词);C. as由于;D. once一旦。
A. dropped使落下,使掉下;B. landed登陆;C. threw扔掉;D. packed包装。根据空后“their phones and keys on land and jumped in.”
A. heart心脏;B. control控制;C. hope希望;D. strength力气,力量。
A. supporting支持;B. adjusting调整;C. pushing推,促进;D. tapping轻拍。 故选A。
A. back向后地;B. straight直接地;C. still仍然;D. up向上。
A. current趋势,涌流;B. wall墙;C. boat小船;D. pole杆。根据第一段“the current pulled him away from the seawall.”
A. turned out结果是,证明是;B. turned up出现,找到;C. turned in上交;D. turned down调低,拒绝。根据空后“As they approached the boat,”可知,此处指救援船出现了。故选B。
A. accident事故;B. disaster灾难;C. panic惊慌;D. threat威胁,恐吓。根据空后“The wave created by the current was sucking them under the boat.”
A. pressed down按下;B. brought down移入;C. pulled down摧毁,拉下来;D. taken down记下,拿下。 Blauzvern to let go.”
A. signaling发信号;B. allowing允许;C. demanding要求;D. convincing使相信。前文提到有人把Blauzvern从船上拉下来了,所以此处需用allow,allow sb. to do sth.
A. away离去;B. aboard在车(船、飞机);C. apart分离;D. aside离开。根据前文“Somehow, he grasped a pole attached to the boat deck”可知,此处把自己拖上船的甲板上。故选B。
A. safety安全;B. relief救济;C. aid援助;D. comfort舒适。根据前文“The men in the water pushed the drowning guy while the men in the boat pulled him up”可知,因为落水的人被救上岸了,所以他安全了。故选A。
A. health健康;B. mood情绪;C. condition状况;D. identity身份。根据前文“The man they had saved was taken to the hospital for medical aid.”
A. complained抱怨;B. reported报道;C. admitted承认;D. argued辩论。根据前一句“As for the rescuers, each of them was at work by 10:30 a.m.”
A. experience经历,经验;B. excuse借口;C. reputation名声,声望;D. memory记忆。

I moved to a new place. After the first day at my new school, I walked home alone. Mom told me she had to work. I was still hoping she’d meet me after the bell.
I opened the door. I was hungry. I wandered into the kitchen, tearing tape from the packed boxes while I searched for a clean plate. My fingers slipped, and something went crashing to the ground.
“Benjamin!” cried Mom from the doorway. I didn’t hear her come in. “What just broke?” she asked, bending to pick up the shards (碎片). In her hands, I recognized the pieces. It was Grandma’s bowl, the one Mom put out for special occasions.
“Why couldn’t you have waited for me to unpack? I couldn’t believe you broke this,” she said.
Words burst from my mouth and spilled across the room. “Well, I can’t believe we have to live here now! I can’t believe I have to switch schools when there are only a few weeks left before summer!” I ran into my room, shutting the door behind me violently.
The broom (扫帚) swept across the kitchen floor. Then the click of Mom’s bedroom door closed behind her. I stole out into the kitchen and picked out the shards in the dustbin. There were so many pieces in here, but maybe I could put them back together.
“I’ m sorry I yelled,” said Mom, as she opened her door. “Please just throw out the pieces. We can’t make a fresh start with broken things.”
As I wandered down the hall, Mr. Sato, my neighbor, was emptying his garbage.
“Are you sure you want to throw that out?” he asked, gesturing towards the bowl.
“It’s broken,” I whispered. “This is all my fault.”
“Things break, Benjamin. That isn’t anyone’s fault. Besides, this is a simple repair. Come. I’ll show you.” Taking a thin knife, Mr. Sato started to repair the bowl. After a long time, Mr. Sato said to me, “This needs to dry. Come back on Saturday, and we will finish it.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Saturday morning, I stole out early and knocked on the Satos’ door.

I was a little nervous to show Mom the bowl, but that night I brought it into her room.

Saturday morning, I stole out early and knocked on the Satos’ door. “Now comes my favorite part,” said Mr. Sato. He offered me a tiny brush. “Take your time, and fill in the crack lines.” At first my hand was shaking, but then I painted with smooth strokes. When I finished, the bowl looked completely different. Instead of the cracks blending in and disappearing, now you could see exactly where it was broken. “This bowl has another layer to its history— it has been broken, repaired, and is stronger because of it,” said Mr. Sato. I took the bowl home quietly.
I was a little nervous to show Mom the bowl, but that night I brought it into her room. She ran her fingertip over the golden veins. “Mr. Sato helped me fix it,” I said. “It’s so beautiful,” she replied. “A new beginning.” I sat on the edge of her bed, and Mom reached out to me. Our hands joined with crisscrossed fingers. Maybe it finally did feel like a fresh start. The bowl was stronger like this too. It was the cracks that were holding it together.
