National Mall, Washington D.C.(U. S. A.)
You can walk a pathway from the Lincoln Memorial to the Washington Monument with other sights in between. Do you know you can go up in the elevator to the top of the Washington Monument? Tickets are free, but pay a small fee to reserve them in advance to avoid being disappointed.
Notre-Dame Cathedral, Paris(France)

Fusterlandia, Jaimanitas, Havana(Cuba)
Artist Jose Fuster left Cuba decades ago to travel in Europe and came back inspired to decorate his run-down properly in the suburbs of Jaimanitas with broken tiles(瓷砖). Eventually he covered a good portion of the neighborhood with his fantastic tile art, including bus slops, benches, front gales and more. For anyone who enjoys folk art this is a must-see, and it’s incredible that there is no entrance charge.
The British Museum, London (U. K.)
This is a place where you can immerse yourself in two million years of human history, art and culture. You need to go there to see the Egyptian mummies, the ancient Greek marbles and so many other treasures. In 1980, I lived in Sydney, Nova Scotia which was a dirty steel town then. The steel factory was fed by a large number of coal mines surrounding the area. I became fascinated by the mines, the miners and the life they led. One weekend, I visited the Miner’s Museum, which was built over a disused mine. Pictures of men, faces black with coal dust, hung from the walls on the main floor. Many would die from black lung disease long before they died of old age.
I was the only local in the group of tourists. Along the way, we paused to look at the displays of mining equipment from centuries long gone. At one lighted alcove (壁凹) there was a small cage. A bird once lived inside. Treated kindly by the miners, it was well fed. It sat and waited to give up its life as a warning of the deadly methane gas (沼气) the coal produced. With no color or smell, a buildup of methane would kill the miners and destroy the tunnels they worked in. The bird’s death, like a smoke detector, warned the men of danger.
“Turn off your helmet lights!” the guide then ordered in the tunnel. “I want you to experience the life of a miner.” One by one we turned off our lights. The darkness was total-so thick that you thought the very air itself had been sucked out of the mine. And the silence! The silence was complete except for the breaths of fear from my companions. In the end, when we were pulled back to the surface the warm sun had new meaning for us.
Back in my small, rented room in a basement, I closed the curtains and turned off the lights. I thought deeply about a miner’s life under the ground, black dust, no sunshine and much danger. It’s not a life I would wish on anyone. Many people may hate their jobs. There have been a few I didn’t like and complained about. Then I thought about the coal miners and realized how blessed I am.
24.Why did the author go to the Miner’s Museum?
A.Because he wanted to record the miners.
B.Because he didn’t want to do anything else.
C.Because he was interested in the life of the miners.
D.Because he was always attracted by pictures in museums.
25.What can be inferred from the second paragraph?
A.The bird liked methane gas.
B.Even a little methane gas would kill the miners.
C.The tunnels would be exploded by the miners if methane gas was released.
D.It was hard for the miners to know if methane gas was released without the bird.
26.How did the tourists feel after turning off their helmet lights?
A.Calm and relaxed. B.Excited and thrilled.
C.Fascinated and peaceful. D.Breathless and frightened.
27.What does the author want to convey in the last two paragraphs?
A.He believed that he was very lucky. B.The basement was his tunnel and mine.
C.No job could satisfy him except mining. D.It was impossible for miners to live a happy life.
C
Pre-school children who spend time together take on one another’s personalities, a new research has found. The study shows that environment plays a key role in shaping people’s personalities. While genetics still forms the central part of the human psyche (心理), the research finds that personality traits (特征) are “contagious” (传染的) among children. “ Our finding flies in the face of common assumptions that personality can’t be changed,” said Dr. Jennifer Neal, co-author of the study.
The researchers studied the personalities and social networks of two pre-school classes for a full school year. One of the classes was a set of three-year-olds, and the other a set of four-year-olds. Children whose friends were hard-working or outgoing gradually took on these personality traits over time. Psychology expert Dr. Emily Dublin said kids are having a far bigger effect on each other than people may realize.
The new study is not the first to explore the contagious effects of personality traits. A 2015 psychology study found that rudeness at work can be contagious as it travels from person to person “like a disease”. The study found that seeing a boss being rude to an employee was enough to cause people to be rude to those around them.
The researchers questioned 6,000 people on the social “climate” in their workplaces, which included offices, hotels and restaurants. They found 75 percent of those who took part said they had been treated rudely at least once in the past year. And the study also suggests that merely seeing other people being subjected to rudeness made it more likely that a person would treat their colleagues in the same way. Rudeness could include leaving someone off an invite to a company event, sending unkind emails, finding fault with others or failing to give praise.
Dr.Torkelson believes companies need to be more aware of the harm that rudeness in the workplace can do as it can damage the working environment. She said better training could help to fight against the problem.
28.According to Paragraph 2, who have the greatest impact on children’s personality?
A.Their parents. B.Their friends.
C.The researchers. D.The psychologists.
29.Which of the following is considered rude at the workplace?
A.Ignoring the faults of co-workers. B.Not sending emails to workmates.
C.Seeking praise from colleagues and bosses. D.Not inviting a colleague to a company party.
30.What is the passage mainly about?
A.One’s personality is hard to change. B.One’s personality is shaped by genes.
C.One’s personality traits can spread to others. D.One’s personality traits can change overnight.
31.This passage is most probably taken from ________.
A.a science report. B.a study guide.
C.a school textbook. D.a technical journal.

Pieter Bruegel’s 1565 realistic painting The Harvesters hangs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. “The work describes farmers cutting wheat nearly as tall as they are,” Ghent University biologist Ive De Smet says. “Nowadays, if you walk through a wheat field, you basically see wheat is about knee-high, which is a consequence of selective breeding (培育) from the second half of the 20th century.” De Smet says he’s teaming up with art historian David Vergauwen of Amarant to look at things where they can spot differences in shape, in color, and in size. Wheat is just one example of how historical artwork can help track the transformation of food crops over time.
Friends since childhood, they took interest in plants in artwork and began with a visit to the Hermitage Museum in Russia — where they noticed an odd-looking watermelon in an early-17th-century painting by Flemish artist Frans Snyders.
“So if you think of a watermelon, you cut it through, it should be dark red on the inside. But that one appeared to be pale and white.” De Smet assumed the painter had done a poor job. But Vergauwen said, “This is one of the best painters ever from that era. So if he paints it like that, that’s the way it must have been.” Other paintings showed that both red and white watermelons were raised during the 17th century.
The team hopes to set up an online research database of historical plant artwork. They create a social media hashtag (主题标签) for it. Anyone could send pictures of relevant artwork and details of plants when they visit a museum or exhibit through the hashtag. But, they add, the sources need to be realistic. “If you’re going to use, for example, Picasso to understand how a pear looked, you might be misled.”
32.What can we learn from De Smet’s words in paragraph 1?
A.Humans have mainly fed on wheat since 1565.
B.Wheat has gone through great changes in height.
C.The scene in The Harvesters may be unbelievable.
D.Selective breeding affects agricultural structure.
33.What is Vergauwen’s attitude to the watermelon painted by Frans Snyders?
A.Doubtful. B.Disapproving. C.Favorable. D.Curious.
34.Why is the social media hashtag created?
A.To encourage people to focus on art. B.To collect more paintings for their database.
C.To advertise their research database. D.To share some historical plant artwork.
35.What is the text mainly about?
A.Ancient paintings focused on food crops. B.Two men create a database of plant artwork.
C.Plants today are different from their ancestors. D.Old art reveals agricultural information.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One day, Dad took Tim and Lily to the supermarket. “Now where has Tim gone? ” asked Dad. Lily shrugged. Keeping track of Tim was not on her agenda today. She’d been trying to decide on the perfect gift for Dad’s upcoming birthday. This year, she was determined to prepare a present that couldn’t be bought at a store or ordered online.
“Daddy!” Tim appeared out of nowhere, disturbing Lily’s thoughts. He yelled, holding a cereal (麦片) box in the air, “Let’s get it! It’s nutritious and delicious! And it has a dragon inside! ” Tim remembered Dad saying that when he was a kid, almost every box of cereal came with a toy. Ever since, Tim was certain that he, too, would find a toy in the next box.
When they got home, Dad and Lily began putting away the groceries. Tim couldn’t wait to take the box of cereal upstairs to his room. By the time they finished, Lily could hear Tim shouting. “No! No!” Tim’s voice kept getting louder and louder. Lily imagined each word as the sound of a hammer striking metal. Then she raced towards her brother’s room. The moment she stepped inside, she felt a crunch (嘎吱声) beneath her feet. It was obvious that Tim dumped all that cereal looking for a toy dragon. “They lied! No dragon. Just a picture on the box.” Tim sounded close to tears. Annoyed as Lily was, she said quietly, “Let’s see what the box says.” “I don’t know how to read.” her brother said in a low voice.
It reminded Lily that last school year, Tim’s teacher who sent home easy-to-read books and worksheets insisted that he was ready to learn to read and just needed some extra help, but Tim complained about books “for babies” and “boring” homework assignments. It was really a headache for Dad to teach Tim to read! At the thought of these, it seemed that Tim’s dragon issue had swept away her concern for a present for Dad.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1:
Lily decided to cooperate with Tim, making up a dragon story and having Tim read for Dad.
