A
Every year, Time magazine picks out what it calls “The 25 Best Inventions” of the year. Here, Teens has chosen some of the most interesting ones.
Ember Mug
It’s hard to always keep coffee at the right temperature, especially in winter. It’s too hot to drink at first, but before we know it, it gets too cold and loses all its taste. The perfect level of warmth for a cup of coffee only lasts for 37 seconds, which makes the Ember Mug a great invention. It keeps your coffee or tea at a certain temperature, anywhere between 45℃ and 62℃, once you set it through a smartphone app.
Tasty One Top
TV cooking shows make cooking look so easy, but it’s almost impossible to get the recipes to cook the same as how the professionals cook. However, the Tasty One Top DIY cooking companion is here to help. Developed by BuzzFeed, the cooker can be connected to a smartphone app, which has more than 1,700 recipes and videos. You choose a recipe and the app will let the cooker know what to do. For example, it’ll tell you when to turn your steak or when to add certain ingredients.
Jibo
Smart speakers from companies like Amazon and Xiaomi have added a lot of fun to our lives, but they’re still just faceless speakers. However, Jibo, developed by MIT professor Cynthia Breazeal, has brought smart technology to life. Said to be “the world’s first social robot for the home”, Jibo looks like a cartoon character. Inside its “head”, there are various sensors and cameras, which allow it to recognize faces and speech. It can also set alarms, remind you of important things, tell you the weather and read news or messages from your friends and family.
21.How can Tasty One Top help people?
A.By teaching people how to cook. B.By offering people different recipes.
C.By saving energy while cooking. D.By offering different kinds of cooking apps.
22.What can Jibo probably be?
A.A cartoon character. B.A faceless robot. C.A family assistant. D.A smart alarm.
23.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To advertise hightech products. B.To introduce some new inventions.
C.To encourage subscription to Time. D.To tell about some “tasty” products.

Sydney Raley has been working at McDonald’s for about seven months and it’s been her typical after-school job. When she headed into her weekend shift on Saturday, December 18, she likely expected to do more of the same: Stand at the drive-through window, take orders over the headset, and hand each customer their meal with a smile.
In fact, that’s exactly how it started. But a few hours into her shift, things took a dramatic turn. After handing a customer some of their food, Sydney let them know that more would be coming as soon as it was ready. But just seconds later, she noticed a terrible look of panic spread across the woman’s face. Then came the coughing. She was coughing like crazy. Her daughter in the passenger seat looked terrified.
Sydney immediately knew she was choking. For an instant, Sydney remembered the first aid training she had received more than four years earlier. Most 15-year-olds might panic at the sight of this (even most adults might, too). But not Sydney. Instead, the teen remained calm and quickly shouted to both her manager and the woman’s daughter to call 911. Then, she drove through the drive-through window and came to the rescue.
The teen flung the driver’s side door open and got the choking woman to her feet. Then she began to use the Heimlich maneuver(海姆立克急救法). However, she had never actually had to use the life-saving technique before, and after a few tries, it wasn’t quite working. Luckily, another customer was just a few feet away in the parking lot. She shouted for help, hoping that another person’s strength combined with hers, would help force whatever was in the woman’s mouth to finally come out. Next, a man who heard the call for help ran over and started using Heimlich with the woman. Fortunately, it worked and the woman spat out the food stuck in her throat. Needless to say, the woman was very grateful. Just as she began to catch her breath, first responders arrived on the scene, and when officers asked what happened, she told them all about Sydney’s heroic act. “They said, ‘Congratulations, you’re a lifesaver; you’re a hero.’” Sydney recalled.
24.What can we learn about Sydney from the first two paragraphs?
A.She is patient and confident. B.She is kind and knowledgeable.
C.She is hard-working and careful. D.She is generous and warm-hearted.
25.Where was the woman customer when she got choked?
A.She was in the car. B.She was on the street.
C.She was in the parking lot. D.She was in a restaurant.
26.What does the underlined “flung” in the last paragraph most probably mean?
A.Pulled violently. B.Slipped gently.
C.Threw suddenly. D.Rushed hurriedly.
27.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A.What happened to the woman.
B.How to do the Heimlich maneuver.
C.How the chocked woman was rescued.
D.Why Sydney failed to use the Heimlich maneuver.

Coca-Cola announced on Wednesday that it will begin transitioning (转变) from green to clear plastic on August 1 to increase the material’s likelihood of being remade into new beverage (饮料) bottles. The beverage giant is committed to making 100% of its packaging recyclable by 2025 and using at least 50% recycled material in its packaging by 2030.
Sprite, an important brand of Coca-Cola, currently uses plastic bottles containing a green additive called Polyethylene Telephthalate (PET). These bottles are commonly changed into single-use items like clothing and carpeting that can’t be recycled into new PET bottles.
“Taking colors out of bottles improves the quality of the recycled material,” said Julian Ochoa, CEO of a plastics group, which is working with Coca-Cola to improve bottle-to-bottle recycling. “When recycled, clear PET Sprite bottles can be remade into bottles, helping drive a circular economy for plastic.”
Sprite, the popular lemon-flavored soft drink, which first hit shelves in 1961, is also getting a new logo and packaging design. Sprite’s packaging will keep the brand’s recognizable green color and include noticeable “Recycle Me” message. Other drinks that use green bottles will also transition to clear packaging in the coming months.
Both Coca-Cola and PepsiCo have been criticized for contributing to the world’s plastic pollution. In 2021, both companies ranked as the world’s top plastic polluters for the 4th consecutive (连续的) year by the environmental organization Break Free From Plastic. Global beach cleanups were carried out by more than 11,000 volunteers in 45 countries to identify the most common plastic polluters. Break Free From Plastic found that 20,000 Coca-Cola branded products were picked up, representing more pollution than the next two top polluters combined.
Coca-Cola announced its “World Without Waste” sustainable packaging program in 2018, in which it promised to make all of its packaging recyclable—excluding the caps and labels—as well as have at least 25% of its beverages sold in refillable packaging by 2030.
28.What’s the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To state the main idea of the text. B.To introduce Coca-Cola’s new product.
C.To draw people’s attention to Coca-Cola. D.To give the news background information.
29.What do we know about green bottles from the text?
A.Their material is of low quality. B.They can widely be changed into single-use items.
C.They contain less pollutants than clear bottles. D.They are more expensive to recycle.
30.What did Break Free From Plastic find?
A.20,000 Coca-Cola products were produced in 2021.
B.Plastic was the most common polluter in 45 countries.
C.The top three and four polluters made less pollution than Coca-Cola in 2021.
D.Coca-Cola and PepsiCo were responsible for the environmental protection.
31.What is the text mainly about?
A.Coca-Cola’s releasing new soft drinks.
B.“Recycle Me” message on the clear Sprite bottles.
C.Colored bottles reduce the quality of the recycled material.
D.Sprite is retiring its signature green plastic bottles after more than 60 years.

We’ve all been in a position where life gets busy, schedules are difficult to coordinate and connecting with friends feels harder than ever. With some friendships, we may lose touch and want to reconnect. However, the more time that passes, the more uncertain it can feel if they want to hear from us.
A recent study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology says it’s time to reach out. Researchers found numerous benefits when reaching out to friends and old acquaintances. Especially if you’re unsure of how well they’ll receive hearing from you. The study, led by Dr Peggy Liu, is called The Surprise of Reaching Out: Appreciated More Than We Think. In the study, researchers posed the question: Do people accurately understand how much other people value being reached out to by someone in their social circle? To answer this question, researchers carried out 13 experiments with more than 5,900 participants. In the experiments, researchers measured how much people estimated their friends or acquaintances would appreciate them reaching out versus how much those on the receiving end did appreciate it. They also examined different forms of communication-phone calls, texts, emails, notes or even small gifts—and their impact.
Over the series of experiments, experts discovered a similar trend: those reaching out significantly underestimated how much their friends would appreciate hearing from them. Plus, the more unexpected the communication was, the more the friend on the receiving end appreciated it. “People are fundamentally social beings and enjoy connecting with others,” the researchers wrote.
In fact, what made these moments of reaching out so impactful was the effort they showed—no matter the form of communication. Dr Amie Gordon, a social psychologist at the University of Michigan, emphasises the importance of small moments and making efforts in relationships in a Psychology Today article. “In a busy life, these little moments might feel just like that—little moments that don’t really matter ... But each moment we ignore is a missed opportunity to connect and build up an emotional bank of positive moments.”
The science is clear—people appreciate the effort we put into our friendships. And we greatly underestimate it. One phenomenon that may explain why those who reached out underestimated their positive impact is because of “the liking gap”. Psychologist Terri Apter writes in Psychology Today that the liking gap is a tendency to “how we often underestimate other’s responses to us”, and the reality that other people like us more than we may think.

D.We are more well-liked and well-received than we expect in our friendships.

第二节:读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Tim’s heart raced as he drove to the lawyer’s office. He was bequeathed (遗赠) a mysterious box his dad had never allowed him and his sister to even go near. He signed papers, but was shocked to learn he didn’t get the key to open it and nothing about the key was mentioned in the will. “You’ll have to figure that out!” the lawyer said. Tim left the office, puzzled about what his late dad had left him.
Just then, he remembered his childhood home where he and his twin sister Karen grew up. They had lost their mother just two months after they were born. They were raised by their dad Jonathan, and the two were the best friends! As they grew older, they were drawn to the mysterious box, but their dad warned them never to touch it, and even hung the key on a nail high above the fireplace so that they would never get their hands on its contents. Whatever he was hiding from his kids, he was on guard at all times.
As the years fleeted by, Tim and Karen moved on with their respective lives. And their brother-sister bond went downhill. The twins fought over who would inherit (继承) their dad’s house. Jonathan was heartbroken and whatever trick he tried to reconcile (和解) them, nothing worked. Meanwhile, Jonathan’s health began to decline, and even on his deathbed, he wished his kids would put aside their differences and get back together.
What would Tim do with the inheritated box now? He went to his childhood home to find the key. The house no longer appeared like that loving home Tim remembered growing up in. When he reached to grab the key above the fireplace, he sensed someone behind him. “What are you doing here?” screamed Karen, casting the cell phone flashlight on Tim’s face.
“Dad bequeathed me his old chest, and I came here looking for the key. But what are you doing here?”
“Dad bequeathed me the key! So I came here to find the chest,” said Karen, puzzled about his father’s decision.
