Para1:But no more helicopters came and it was getting dark again. Immediately, an absolute darkness ruled the forest.
【分析】用时间时间副词承接所给首句中的“it getting dark again”,同时衔接后文的环境描写“the darkness ruled the forest”。
Para 1: But no more helicopters came and it was getting dark again. Desperate and hopeless, Jane knelt down, tears streaming down her face.
Para 2: It was daybreak when Jane woke up. Weak as she was, she struggled to her feet, continuing searching for assistance.
Para 1: Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. Afraid that I might hurt the lovely small creature, I automatically let out a cry to stop my horse.
Para 2: We had no idea where we were and it got dark. Exhausted and hungry, I wondered if we could find our way back.
Para1: But no more helicopters came and it was getting dark again. Feeling disappointed, Jane had to stay alone for another night.
Para 2: It was daybreak when Jane woke up. Feeling refreshed, she continued to walk along the stream to find the way out.
Para 1: The car abruptly stopped in front of him. "Get into the car." Paul shouted at Mac.
(2017.11浙江卷)Para 2: We drove through several states and saw lots of great sights along the way. I looked out of the car window, winding rivers, lofty mountains, sunny beaches and deep valleys holding me entirely in their fascination.
Para 1: The next day we remembered the brand-new tent we had brought with us. Dad exchanged a glance with me. Why not camp to satisfy Mom?
BOOM, CRASH! The wind was howling outside of my house. We were having a terrible thunder storm. I was very scared.
Why does trouble always follow me around? Do I have a "kick me" sign on my back or something?
My 12th birthday came at last. What a wonderful feeling it was to know that I turned twelve and that I might possibly get the thing I wanted most.
I saw my mom and dad coming towards me with a small box wrapped up (包装) with nice pink paper with flowers on it. When I removed the paper and opened the box, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I had got a cell phone! I ran to give my mom and dad the biggest hug ever, and said, “Thank you! I love you!”
“You’re welcome. We knew this was going to make you happy. But we give you this not only because you have turned twelve but also because you are doing well in school. We expect you to keep getting good grades.”
I said confidently that I would. As soon as I got to school the next morning, I was showing off my phone and asking everyone for their number. It was cool how I got so many contacts (联系人) on the first day. It felt like I didn’t even exist in that class any more. I didn’t pay much attention to the teachers because I was too busy on my phone. I texted my friends, surfed the Internet for stories or played games.
Luckily, I didn’t get caught using it. I had formed a habit of secretly enjoying my phone in class. But I was pretty sure that the teachers did notice that I stopped paying attention to them, because a week later we took a test and I failed. What’s worse, my parents had to sign the test.

A Real Hero
Mindy had a pet dog. She took him for a walk every day. Usually she took him to a park near her house. The park was next to a river. Many people took their dogs there. Almost all the dog owners knew each other. They often stopped and had a talk.
For Mindy, it had been a happy place until a homeless man moved into the park. He usually slept under a tree near the river. He was very dirty. He had no teeth, and his clothes were old. He even sometimes talked to himself. Mindy was a bit frightened. When she went to the park, she tried to stay close to other dog walkers. She was unwilling to meet the scary man.
Then winter came and it was cold and wet in the park. The homeless man didn’t have warm clothes and seemed as if he couldn’t bear to go through the winter.
One morning when Mindy was walking in the park, she encountered the homeless man again. To Mindy’s surprise, he was wearing a warm yellow hat that was quite new and clean. He walked towards her, smiling and pointing at his hat. Mindy was so scared that she ran as quickly as she could. “Mindy!” one of the dog walkers called out to her. It was Alison. Mindy ran towards her.
“Mindy! He is harmless! He won’t hurt you! He just wants to show you his new hat! He is so happy,” explained Alison. But Mindy still felt bad. “I’m sorry, but where did he get the hat?” Mindy asked. “I bought it for him. I saw it in the $2 shop. It is so cold and he is so poor. I wanted to do something for him,” answered Alison. “It’s very kind of you,” said Mindy with a smile.
Over the following few days the weather became even worse. It rained all day and all night, Mindy didn’t want to enter the park. Though she felt OK, she was still afraid of the homeless man. So she just took her dog for a walk along the streets outside the park instead.

65-year-old Mr. Fairfax had retired from teaching. He was very interested in adventure. This time he made an adventure on a sparsely (稀少地) populated land. In the cold winter, he tried a new place and forgot to bring his cell phone, the only time on the trip. He trekked (艰苦跋涉) more than half an mile with two dogs to a harvested wheat field.
With his dark staring eyes at the horizon in expectation of another rabbit, Mr. Fairfax stepped on the thin snow on a canal. Suddenly, it collapsed (坍塌) and dropped him four feet to the bottom.
Realizing that he was in trouble and was going to hurt himself, Mr. Fairfax was suddenly picking up a lot of speed. His left leg hit first, and he lay on his side to reach for his shotgun, unloaded it and used it as a crutch (拐杖). He spent an hour and a half climbing the canal but slipped and slid back down when he was partly up. This time, one of his feet got fixed between two rocks. Mr. Fairfax told himself that if he didn’t get himself out of that canal, he wasn’t going to have a very good night.
Mr. Fairfax walked his foot free and climbed more slowly and cautiously out of the canal. He immediately realized the difficulty of the task before him. The accident occurred about 2 p.m., and it was nearing 5 p.m. with the road far away as the sun was setting.
Mr. Fairfax focused on crawling to safety. Even with his gun supporting him, hopping was impractical. Instead, he sat down and pushed himself backward less than 40 inches at a time with his good leg. He was determined and sure that he must hold on. He was in exhaustion and had more frequent breaks. Temperatures dropped overnight, and his gloves and boots got wet. His hands and feet soon were completely numb.

Violet and Tilly were two sisters. Tilly was so stuck with her sister that she always followed her elder sister, Violet, everywhere. For example, when Violet was painting, she would paint by her side. Every time, Violet looked at her angrily. Couldn’t she find her own thing to do? This time, it was Tilly’s first week at gymnastics, while Violet had done gymnastics for the past two years.
Violet sat on the gym floor, waiting for her turn to do somersaults (翻筋斗). She frowned at her little sister across the room. Why couldn’t Tilly always find her own thing to do? “Violet, you’re up!” called Violet’s instructor, Miss Taylor. Violet came over and pushed off with her legs and straightened her arms. She did one, two, three somersaults. Miss Taylor clapped. “Perfect!”
Violet noticed that Tilly had stepped away from the younger group to watch Violet’s somersaults. “Tilly!” called Tilly’s instructor, Miss Brooke, from across the room. Tilly didn’t seem to hear. Not until she was called three times did she run back to her group. “ Your turn to do somersaults. ” Miss Brooke put an arm around her. Tilly walked to the mat with her face turning red like a tomato. She bent down to start a somersault. When she rolled, she fell heavily on the mat. Kids laughed in surprise at the noise.
Tilly stood uncomfortably and then ran towards the restroom. She was gone from the gym, as Violet had wanted. But it didn’t feel right. After telling Miss Taylor where she was going, Violet hurried to the restroom. She found Tilly crying hard. Violet put an arm around her sister. Seeing Violet, Tilly cried even harder. Tilly sniffed “I don’t want to do gymnastics any more.” She wiped away the tears with the back of her hand. This was Violet’s chance. If she said nothing to her sister, Tilly might quit gymnastics forever.

There I was stuck AGAIN. This was the same feeling that overwhelms me every year. But this year it was different, because if I failed this exam I would not graduate. I sat there, panic stricken, unable to move. Pressure crushed in on me. What if I could not go to high school? Would Dad and Mum kick me out of their house?
I took two deep breaths and looked up. I could see the teacher pacing up and down. The classroom was dead silent except for the clock. Tick Tock. Tick Tock. I checked the clock for the third time. Ten minutes left! I clenched (握紧) and unclenched my fist in an attempt to calm myself. Think! I told myself. I knew I could do this. My hand couldn’t help trembling. Then I scribbled (胡乱写下) the first few words that hit me.
“It isn’t my fault...”
I stared blankly at those words. At the comer of my eye, I could see my teacher walking towards me. She was checking on our progress! Dread built up within me. Then, I glanced at the four words again. Without any warning, my hand moved to write.
Hair on my arms stood as the teacher leaned in and started to read my work. I peered over to see my teacher’s expression, praying that my work had not brought in disappointment. To my astonishment, she displayed a clear satisfaction! That was good, wasn’t it? I hurriedly looked down at my essay.
I skimmed it through. I felt proud. Now, there’s something I was still worried about. I checked the clock. Two minutes left! I was still writing!
I bit my lip, took a deep breath, and concentrated on writing. I heard the teacher leave.
“There’s one minute left. Please check your work.” the teacher reminded us.

I had to show my parents the test paper when I got home. When seeing my test result, they couldn’t believe it. They were angry but most of all, they were disappointed. They asked me why I failed the test. I didn’t dare to tell a lie, and told them the truth. When figuring out the cause, my dad said, “ The phone helps you communicate with us and your friends, but I think you’re too young to properly use it.”
My mom added, “Let us help you keep your cell phone until you’re old enough” Although I was unwilling to do it, I still took my phone out of my pocket and handed it to my parents. During the first days without the cell phone, I felt bad. But eventually I got used to it and my life, especially my school life, became normal again. In class, I’d listen carefully as before. After school, I’d be devoted to finishing my homework. Gradually, my school performance improved and I obtained good grades again.

“One minute left?” I exclaimed. Everybody looked at me weirdly. I looked down, feeling ashamed. But I had to finish the paper. I tried to ignore everything and continue writing. One more word, I said to myself, come on. Just like this, I forced myself to concentrate and willed my hand to scribble whatever that popped up on my mind. “Time’s up! Put your pens down. Please hand in your test paper to me in the front.” the teacher announced. I finished! I put down my pen, breathing a sigh of relief, and then I stood up and limped towards the teacher to hand it in-my legs felt like noodles, thanks to the extreme tension.
A week later, the teacher handed the papers back to us. It was the time for truth! I folded my paper and held it tightly in my hands, shilly-shallying about whether to check the result in front of my classmates. Finally I decided I should face my fate bravely and unfolded it. It was an “A”! I could not believe my eyes. How could it be? It was the first time in my life that I had got an “A”. I turned to look at my teacher. Our eyes met. She nodded and gave me a big smile! At that point, I made a firm resolution: I’d be more hard-working and more confident, so that I wouldn’t be stuck and panic like this again in high school.
