The whole idea behind the US National Park System is to preserve natural and historic locations, and the wild life that lives there. That goal allows for inclusion of any place that features natural beauty, unique geological features, or an interesting ecosystem, plus the sites of national monuments and other places of historical or archaeological significance.
We’ve selected three US National Parks that are as different from each other as possible. Let’s start in the Northeastern corner of the US, with a beautiful park called Acadia.
Acadia National Park
Acadia National Park is in Eastern Maine, near the town of Bar Harbor. The park is unique, in that it features a wide variety of landscapes, including mountains, ocean coastlines, woodlands, lakes, and wetlands. It covers an area of some 47, 452 acres. The park is home to 37 species of mammals, including black bears, moose, and deer. There are 33 fish species and 331 bird varieties.
Everglades National Park
Unlike many national parks, Everglades National Park was initially created to protect a fragile and disappearing ecosystem. The Everglades consists of a network of wetlands and forests that are fed by a river flowing slowly out of Lake Okeechobee.
The Everglades covers a massive area, and Everglades National Park protects only the southern twenty percent. It’s the United States’ largest tropical wilderness; in fact, it is the largest wilderness of any kind east of the Mississippi River.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is located on “the big island”, Hawaii. It was created in 1916. The park features two active volcanoes, one of which, Mauna Loa, is the world's largest shield volcano(盾状火山). The other, Kilauea, is one of the world’s most active volcanoes.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park lets visitors get up close and personal with the two volcanoes. Odd-looking lava(岩浆)fields and dramatic landscapes attract the eye, and you can learn about the rare plants and animals that thrive in the tough environment.
21. What does the US National Park System aim to do?
A.To protect natural and historic resources.
B.To rebuild old and important constructions.
C.To appreciate natural and geological beauty.
D.To make ecosystems entertaining for people.
22. In which park can you experience a rich diversity of landscapes and wildlife?
A.None of them. B.Acadia National Park.
C.Everglades National Park. D.Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
23. What do visitors do in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park?
A.Learn about ecosystem protection.
B.Enjoy tropical wilderness landscapes.
C.Witness two different kinds of volcanoes.
D.Study lava samples in a tough environment.

I was shocked at the news that Daisy-May Demetre, a 9-year-old double amputee(双截肢者), became the first child to walk the runway at New York Fashion Week in September .
Daisy-May, from Birmingham, was born with fibular hemimelia(腓侧半肢畸形). The condition is rare, occurring in 1 in 50,000 births. When she was 18 months old, Daisy-May’s parents chose to have both of the young girl’s legs amputated --- the right above the knee and the left below the knee --- in the hope of giving her a life of better quality with prosthetics(假肢). Later on, she used prosthetic legs to help her walk and move.
“We had the choice for her to live like that or to go for the operation,” Alex, Daisy - May’s father, said. “We didn’t know at the time that Daisy - May would be as good as she is now. Instead of being discouraged by prosthetic legs, she is inspiring everyone by showing them who she is.”
She is, in many ways, just like any fifth-grader. In school, she prefers English to math, and loves gymnastics. She is a gymnast as well as a model. But it’s her moves on the runway that show the most confidence.
She’s been modeling for 18 months and has already dominated London Fashion Week, having worked for Nike, River Island and several other high street brands in the UK. She was even named Child of Courage in the Pride of Birmingham Awards for inspiring other children to dream big in the face of immense challenges.
In the opinion of Daisy-May’s father, modeling doesn’t define Daisy-May. Rather, it’s a small part of who she is. She just does Daisy. It is the way she goes about life with a smile on her face. Whether it’s dancing or singing, she is a very special little girl.
24. What caused Daisy-May to miss her both legs while she was still a baby?
A. A rare birth illness. B. An unexpected accident.
C. A Paris Fashion Show. D. An unsuccessful operation.
25. What can we conclude from Paragraph 3?
A. Daisy-May was unwilling to get an operation.
B. Daisy-May was disappointed by her missing legs.
C. Daisy-May’s father thinks Daisy-May is amazing.
D. Daisy-May’s father considers Daisy-May is modest.
26. Which action made Daisy-May show her most confidence?
A.Speaking English fluently. B.Working out math problems.
C.Doing graceful gymnastics. D. Walking the runway as a model.
27. In her father’s opinion, what makes today’s Daisy-May?
A. Singing and dancing in a special way.
B. Taking on life with a smile on her face.
C. Managing to become a global inspiration.
D. Being determined to be a world-famous model.

Video conferencing has been around for more than 20 years. Until the Covid-19 pandemic, though, you would find that many people needing to attend a meeting remotely would be calling from a real conference room full of their teammates. Today, we’re routinely holding video conferences that are 100% virtual (虚拟). And this is creating a problem that technology can’t fix.
The problem is us, specifically the fact that we haven’t evolved (进化) socially to the point where we can bear much separation. So much of our well-being and work productivity is decided on how close we are physically. The removal of that for any period of time can be severely damaging. One aspect surprisingly affected by social distancing is laughter.
Normally people laugh about 18 times per day. And 97% of that time we’re laughing with others—we are 30 times more likely to laugh with others than to laugh alone. Think about it; how often does it happen—when you and your friends laugh at something, is that something actually funny? Research shows that 80% of what people laugh at is really not that funny.
So why do people laugh? They laugh in order to laugh with others. Just as everyone starts yawning (打哈欠) when just one person yawns, most people can’t help but laugh when those around them do. This is why TV comedy shows often use prerecorded laugh tracks (音轨).
Laughing in response to other people’s laughing is not just a behavioral phenomenon. When we laugh, our body produces two key chemicals: endorphin which helps relieve pain and sets off feelings of pleasure, and dopamine which can improve learning, motivation and attention. In fact, studies show that people can stand 15% more pain simply by laughing for a few minutes beforehand. Laughter is also associated with higher motivation and productivity at work.
In today’s home-alone, virtual-team world, this is exactly what you as a team leader should be doing: for your team members to stay healthy and productive, you need to get them to laugh more and stress less.
28. Why is video conferencing mentioned at the beginning?
A. To show a fact. B. To entertain readers.
C. To introduce the topic. D. To summarize the passage.
29. What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Laughing starts with yawning in groups.
B. Laughing comes more easily in groups.
C. Laugh tracks are popular in comedy shows.
D. Laughing is uncontrollable in conferences.
30. What can we learn from Paragraph 5?
A. Laughing with others is out of politeness.
B. Laughing is the only way to reduce pain.
C. Laughing improves physical and mental health.
D. Laughing leads to a higher position in the workplace.
31. What would the author most probably discuss next?
A. Specific steps to produce laughter in a team.
B. Other factors that may influence a team’s health.
C. Ways to tell the real world from the virtual world.
D. The importance of maintaining work productivity.
D
Coral creates reefs, structures in the ocean that support entire ecosystems. However, climate change is threatening the existence of such reefs. The Great Barrier Reef has suffered four bleaching events in the last seven years.
Coral bleaching happens when extreme temperatures and sunlight force corals to release algae living in their tissue. This causes them to lose their color and turn white. The experience greatly weakens the coral and can kill them.
Scientists working on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef have successfully tested a new method for freezing and storing coral larvae — the very young form of the small ocean animal.
The science project in Australia involves freezing and storing coral larvae to use later for rewilding. A new material called “cryomesh” is helping the scientists in the effort. Coral is frozen using a special method called cryogenics. This permits the young animals to be stored until they can be unfrozen and placed in the wild. The process currently requires high-tech equipment including lasers and is costly. But, the team in Australia says cryomesh can do a better job of saving the coral and for much less money. The mesh technology helps to store coral larvae at 196 degrees Celsius.
The scientists used the cryomesh to freeze Great Barrier Reef coral larvae at the Australian Institute of Marine Sciences, or AIMS. Workers collected the coral during the animal’s brief yearly reproductive period.
Mary Hagedorn, Senior Research Scientist at Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute explained, “If we can secure the biodiversity of coral...then we’ll have tools for the future to really help restore the reefs.” She added, “...this technology for coral reefs in the future is a real game-changer.”
The cryomesh had been tested earlier on smaller and larger kinds of Hawaian corals. A test on the larger failed. Tests are continuing with larger-size Great Barrier Reef coral. The tests involve scientists from four organizations. Together they are part of the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program.
32. What’s the passage mainly about?
A. A comparison of two experiments. B. A new method for restoring coral reefs.
C. The Great Barrier Reef under great threat.
D. Scientists’ joint efforts to support the ecosystem.
33. What’s the advantage of cryomesh over cryogenics?
A. It is easier to store. B. It is less expensive.
C. It freezes larvae faster. D. It is environmentally friendly.
34. What’s Mary Hagedorn’s point in paragraph 6?
A. People can do more about the biodiversity of corals.
B. The scientists barely have tools to help the reefs restore.
C. The cryomesh technology has changed the corals’ situation.
D. The mesh technology will play a vital role in restoring the reefs.
35. What can we infer about the cryomesh technology?
A. Tests on larger corals are more important.
B. It is going to be applied widely to more corals.
C. Only scientists of AIMS are involved in the tests.
D. More experiments are needed to prove its efficiency.

Mother’s Gift
I grew up in a small town where the primary school was a ten-minute walk from my house. When the noon bell rang, I would race breathlessly home. My mother would be standing at the top of the stairs, smiling down at me.
One lunchtime when I was in the third grade would always stay with me. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had rehearsed(排练) my lines so hard with me. But no matter how easily I acted at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator’s(旁白员) part for the play, and asked me to change roles. Her words, kindly expressed, still hurt me, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practise my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.
It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine was turning green. Under the huge trees we could see yellow dandelions(蒲公英) on the grass in clusters(簇), as if a painter had touched our landscape with a bit of gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. “I think I'm going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling it up by the roots. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.”
“But I like dandelions,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful-even dandelions.”
My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn't it?” she asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. “And that is true of people too,” she added. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.” Knowing that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled reassuringly(安慰地).
Paragraph 1:
“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said,
Paragraph2:
After the play, I took home the dandelion.

读后续写
Paragraph 1:
“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, encouraging and comforting me as she always did. “The narrator’s part is equally important,” my mother added, wearing a shining smile on her soft face. I began to accept that the narrator was of vital significance and rehearsed even harder. Time had flown by and it reached the performance day. Before going on stage I still felt nervous, but it was at that very moment that I found a dandelion put into my pocket by my mother to keep me company. The play turned out to be a great success.
Paragraph 2:
After the play, I took home the dandelion. Mom carefully gazed at the dandelion, gently placed it into a dictionary and smiled as usual. We were perhaps the only people who would keep such a sorry - looking weed. Though decades has passed, I constantly recall the precious lunchtime we were together, grateful for the smiles on my mother’s face and her kindness.
