3、Many people like to collect things. Some collect stamps, some collect dolls and some collect rocks. Christa, from Germany, collects something unusual. She collects mouse-related items.
Christa’s husband is a geologist. He’s very knowledgeable about minerals(矿物). He also likes collecting postcards about mineral resources. Christa always goes with him to fairs(集市) to get new cards for his collection. However, Christa is not interested in mineral resources. She often feels bored at these fairs. Her husband advised her to collect something she likes, like something about her favorite animals. That piece of advice, however, would become his biggest regret ever.
Christa’s favorite animal is the mouse. She has had mice as pets since she was a teenager. She considers the animal lovely and clever. Two or three years after she started her collection, she went all in. Soon, she had hundreds and then thousands of mouse-related items.
Because of her collection, Christa and her husband had a problem. They need more space for her collection. They rented(租) a room particularly for that. Christa’s collection continues to grow. Now every room in her house, from the kitchen to the bathroom, is filled with mouse-related items. Sometimes, her husband complains(抱怨) about this large collection. When this happens, Christa would remind him that it was all his idea!
    【小题1】What does Christa’s husband collect?
【小题2】When did Christa start to keep mice as pets?
【小题3】What does the underlined word “geologist” probably mean?
【小题4】How did they solve the problem for Christa’s collection?
【小题5】What can we know from the article?

    4、
Have you ever heard of FOGO? It is short for “fear of going out.” This buzzword(流行语) is often used to describe social anxiety(焦虑), a problem that some young people are facing.
Sometimes, FOGO can cause us trouble. Recently something happened to a friend of mine. Last Friday, my friend Amy took the subway to go home. The subway was very crowded. When she tried to exit at her stop, my friend found that the door was blocked by other passengers. She was too shy to say “Excuse me.” Instead, she kept waiting until the people in front of her had all gotten off. It ended up taking her two more hours than it usually does to get home. It usually takes her about 40 minutes.
Some people, like my friend, believe that silence is golden. Many times they believe that, by saying nothing, they can avoid making mistakes and therefore they won’t lose face or face any criticism(指责). However, some people around them may see it as a sign of arrogance(傲慢). Anyway, we must say “no” to FOGO.
It isn’t easy to say “no” to FOGO though. We need practice. First, it can make a big difference to tell yourself that you can do it. Also, always pay more attention to what you are doing than what others might say about you. Meanwhile, you need to be brave enough to ask others for help when you do need help.
Throughout our journey in life, we will meet many different people. Don’t be afraid to express yourself. Having the courage to get socialized with people helps you make friends. Your life will be different if you do not have FOGO.
【小题1】What is FOGO often used to describe?
【小题2】How long did it take Amy to get home last Friday?
【小题3】What may happen to people who believe silence is golden?
【小题4】Which is good for practicing saying “no” to FOGO?
【小题5】What can be the best title of the text?

I have been interested in languages for as long as I can remember. My father is really good at learning languages. My family traveled widely when I was a             . My father would talk to everyone we met with in an              way. I was impressed(钦佩) by his language ability. I wished when I grew up, I could be able to speak as many languages as my father could.
I wasn’t a natural language learner. When I was 11 years old, I made slow progress with French at school and almost gave it             . After I entered college, I read many German books in translation. I loved them so much that I wanted to read them in their native tongue. This drove me to pick up German. Once I mastered German, I found myself in love with languages. Since then, I have never              learning new languages. By in my late twenties, I was able to speak German, French, Latin and Greek.
I am often asked what my secret is. The              is very simple. It is endless hours of reading and studying. Before I got married, I              16 hours every day studying languages. I used to like walking fast outdoors while              to the recording and repeating it out loud.
Now I can read books in about 20 languages and speak most of them             . My wish came true. I live in Singapore now. My wife is from Korea, so I learned Korean. It is difficult to learn! At home, I speak French with my sons. If my wife is there, we speak English.
The world would be a              interesting place if there were only one language. It would be like visiting a garden              there was only one type of plant!

    四、阅读回答问题
    7、阅读下面的短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Today, we consider zero as a common number. Few of us know zero has an unusual history. Zero is, in fact, very different from other numbers.
At first, there were only the numbers one to nine. Zero first appeared in India about 2,000 years ago. Many other ancient cultures had been marking nothingness. However, the ancient Indians were the first to consider nothingness a number.
Little by little, global communication became more frequent(频繁). Finally, zero was brought out of India. It was accepted as an Arabic numeral. During the 13th century, Arabic numerals were introduced into the West. However, westerners had been used to using Roman numerals (I, II, III, etc.). Arabic numerals were not popular. This was especially true for zero. Since there is no zero in Roman numerals, people found it hard to accept the new number. Dishonest business people could easily turn a “0” into a “6” or a “9”. Some people, therefore, believed zero would cause much trouble. Zero was also considered an unlucky number. That’s because it’s too negative(负面的) and close to the idea of having debts(债务). France and Italy even banned(禁止) the use of zero citywide.
It was not until 15th century that zero and the other Arabic numerals were fully accepted. Business people played an important role. Just thinking about doing calculation(计算)using Roman numerals. You can hardly do any trade, can you?
【小题1】How many numbers were there before zero was invented?                                      【小题2】Were ancient Indians the first to mark nothingness?                                      【小题3】When were the Arabic numerals introduced into the West?                                      【小题4】Why was zero considered an unlucky number?                                      【小题5】What do you think of the invention of zero?
