All animals—from humans to birdsworms and crocodiles—sleephowevernot all species sleep alike. Scientists have long puzzled over which aspects are truly fundamental. Now a new study on lizards(蜥蜴)suggests that sleep states once thought to occur only in mammals and birds have much older evolutionary origins.

Scientists had long doubted that birds and mammals are the only vertebrates(脊椎动物)to experience rapid eye movement(REM)a sleep state in which the body is mostly immobile but the brain is overworking. During REM sleepthe brain produces high-frequency waves of electrical activity and the eyes turn suddenly from time to time. In humansREM is closely linked to dreaming. REM is a pattern of slow-wave sleep,a state in which brain activity weakens and the waves become more consistent. This slower state is widely thought to be important to memory formation and storage.

“But scientists who looked for signs of REM and slow-wave sleep in reptiles(爬行动物) have had‘confusing’ results”says Gilles Laurenta neuroscientist at the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research in Frankfurt,Germany. So he and his colleagues had planned to examine how the lizards—a common pet in Germany use visual information to chase treats. Using camerathe team found that the sleeping lizards’ eyes twitched during the REM-like stagejust like other animals. They also found a very familiar pattern within the slower phase of the lizards’ brain waves. Some scientists believe these waves help transform new information into memories by replaying past events quickly.

Although more studies are still needed to determine whether the function of these brain wave patterns is the same across speciesthe results suggest that these REM and slow-wave sleep patterns could date all the way back to the common ancestor of reptilesbirdsand mammals.

24What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?

    AThe origin of human dream.

BThe features and course of memory.

CThe definition and effect of REM.

DThe advantages and disadvantages of REM.

25Which of the following can best replace the underlined word“twitched”in paragraph 3 ?

Aopened wide   Bmoved quickly    Cstayed closed Dkept still

26How does the lizards’ brain waves turn information into memories according to some scientists?

ABy playing back the past events quickly.

    BBy changing their pattern occasionally.

    CBy increasing their frequency slowly.

    DBy connecting visual information effectively.

27What can we infer from the last paragraph?

AThe function of the brain wave is the same.

BAll the animals have the common ancestor.

CThe sleep pattern of all the animals is the same.

DThe study about sleep pattern has a long way to go.

    C

The words “caring” and “empathetic”(共情的) aren’t ones normally associated with technology. Yearsley, an Australian enterpriser who is expert in artificial intelligence (AI), is trying to change that.

Yearsley is the founder of Akin, a robotics startup that currently uses a tablet-based system to help users manage the tasks related to home life, whether that’s planning meals or reminding you to pay your cell phone bill. Current home devices made by Google or Amazon or Apple use predictive AI to track patterns, strengthen behaviors and manipulate(操控) buying decisions, some of which, she assumes, are questionable or just unhealthy.

In contrast, the AI that she is developing will be designed to run the human home, encouraging healthful decisions such as taking a nightly walk, refilling the fridge and supporting social interactions like lunches or birthday celebrations with friends. ”It’s the hardest AI I have ever built for it’s a complex system, Yearsley says.

Yearsley began developing the Akin technology in 2017, when she realized the need to better manage the home is hugely ignored. Besides, she realized that women unequally bear the burden of household work. A United Nations report estimates that women do 2. 6 times the amount of unpaid care and domestic work that men do, or close to 30 hours per week in the U. S. alone.

While Yearsley pictures an army of robots someday helping with routine homemade tasks, the first display for Akin will take time and money. Akin has received some early seed money from a handful of investors, and was recently selected as a finalist for tech giant LG Nova’s Mission for the Future program, an annual challenge that seeks to identify businesses having potential to improve life and lead society into the future.

28What might the Akin’s AI system suggest?

AConsuming more drinks to enjoy yourself.

BStaying up late working to make more money.

CSpending more time staying with your family.

DPurchasing products that may attract you.

29What made Yearsley develop the Akin’s AI system?

AThe high cost of current home devices      BAkin’s becoming a finalist for a program.

CFinancial support from investors        DHeavy burden of housewives.

30What can be used to describe the Akin’s AI system?

APopular and promising                BStable and secure

CThoughtful and innovative             DMature and ideal.

31What’s the purpose of the text?

ATo introduce a futuristic AI system

BTo compare two companies’ AI systems

CTo call on people to care about housewives

DTo seek support for an AI expert

    D

Saying farewell to someone you love, even for a night, can be difficult, much less saying goodbye for a lifetime or forever in death. Juliet bid Romeo adieu (再见) for the evening with the words, “Parting is such sweet sorrow.” Sweet sorrow is an oxymoron. But this seeming contradiction is true in the context of relationships.

Relationships are based on feelings, emotions, and passion. Deep friendships and loving relationships are measured by the level of emotional attachment. Emotions intensify over time. People spend time with the people they like. The more one person likes another person, the closer the relationship becomes. Each person in the relationship receives an emotional benefit from knowing the other person.

Saying goodbye means separating from the people who make up a significant part of your emotional identity. Separation, even a temporary absence, from the people you have a deep emotional connection with can cause sorrow because you will no longer be able to enjoy their company.

The sweet side of saying goodbye is the emotional fulfillment of being in a close relationship. The time spent together is emotionally rewarding, especially if that person is seen as a soulmate. Humans are social beings. We seek the love and comfort of other people. Loneliness devastates the human condition and leads to sadness. Sad people will do anything they can to find fulfilling relationships. Likewise, happy people will do anything they can to maintain or enhance relationships. Herein lies the essential point of the emotional problem.

The more intense relationships become, the more devastating the emotional loss that is felt upon separation. The exhilaration of relationships cannot be truly measured without experiencing the overwhelming loss of a deep emotional connection.

Enjoy the company of the person you are with as long as you can; knowing the pain you will feel at the end of the relationship is the true measure of the relationship. If it doesn’t hurt to say goodbye, perhaps it wasn’t worth saying hello.

32Which of the word group can create the same effect as “sweet sorrow”?

Aicy cold      Bdeafening silence    Cclicking sound     Dendless speech

33What can we learn from paragraph 3?

ASaying goodbye is unavoidable in our daily life.

BThe companion of close friends can lessen sorrow.

CA person’s identity is connected with relationship.

DSeparation is the sorrowful part of saying goodbye.

34What gives a person emotional satisfaction in social life?

    AMaking more communication with others.

BComforting friends with love and intense feelings.

CBuilding deep emotional connections with others.

DBeing a thoughtful person by standing in others’ shoes.

35What is the main idea of the passage?

ASweet sorrow is very common in close relationships.

BThe pain of separation is the measure of relationships.

CHuman beings are eager to get emotional fulfillment.

DHappiness is meaningless without sadness to compare it.

    第二节 (5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5)

    阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Looking for a way to be happier? Are you seeking deeper connections with friends or looking for more friends?    36   Try a little compassion.

Compassion, as one scholar describes, is “experiencing feelings of loving kindness toward another person’s suffering”. The compassionate tend to have deeper connections with others and have more friends. They are more forgiving and have a stronger sense of life purpose.   37    The compassionate tend to be happier, healthier, more self-confident, and less self-critical.

Practicing compassion doesn’t have to cost you money. All you need is a quiet place.   38___     Focus on your breath and try to clear your mind. Then mentally focus on your heart area and think about someone you feel tenderness toward. This could be your friend or your family.   39   As time allows, add more people to that circle. This may sound a little strange, but studies have shown this simple exercise really strengthens your sense of compassion.

Even short-term exercises like this broaden your attention, your thinking and your overall sense of well-being in a way that lasts.   40  Compassion helps your brain become more flexible, and lets your brain have a wider sense of what’s going on, and it gives you access to more ideas on how to act.

This practice is beneficial to physical health and can help reduce physical signs of stress. And the happiness that can come from compassion training is the kind that lasts.

AWant to relate better to other people?

BThat’s in part because it changes your brain.

CCompassion training is helpful to reduce stress.

DIn that quiet space, sit in a comfortable position.

ECompassion also has direct personal benefits.

FHowever, it is important to create a comfortable environment.

GThen expand that feeling to yourself and to others.

    第二节 (满分25)

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I must admit, I haven’t always liked animals. In fact, I distrusted them greatly while growing up, and I still fear the ones I don’t know personally. What set my beliefs in stone was being attacked—not once but many times, including the summer after second grade when I was bitten by a rabbit. Then, when I was nine and riding my dirt bike down the road, a large dog charged me and tried to bite my ankle. After all those negative experiences, there was one thing I knew for sure: All creatures, great and small, were no friends of mine.

After college in California, I returned to live the single life in Las Vega. Then I met Lisa. In no time at all, we fell in love, married and moved into a new house. Despite my avoidance of animals, Lisa had a dog called Bailey. Bailey didn’t like me, but he tolerated my existence once he realized I wasn’t going anywhere.

Things changed as spring came. We welcomed a new member of our family: our son Evan. One evening Evan grabbed hold of the dog’s tail. The irritated dog paused and turned to look at his stuck tail but waited patiently until being released. Still the stories I’d heard of animals attacking babies worries me.

Then my worst fear occurred. I sat on the couch (沙发) reading after a long day while my wife worked at the dining-room table paying the bills. I saw Evan crawl across the family-room carpet as he made his way behind the couch. One minute, all was quiet and then Bailey entered the room and headed to where Evan had crawled. I nearly jumped out of my skin when I heard the dog start a fearful barking behind me.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Throwing the book away, I rushed around the couch with great fear.
