Over the past three decades, an 81-year-old Chinese man has been operating a small zoo. The zoo in Enshi, Hubei Province, is called the “world’s loneliest zoo” because few people visit it. Most of the animals there are unhealthy.
Luo Yingjiu began keeping animals at home in the 1980s. After seeing wild animals kept in cages for sale at a market, Luo bought them and took them home to give them medical treatment. He released (释放) those able to live on their own into the wild and continued to raise those that could not live independently. There were so many animals in his house that the local government suggested he open a zoo. With the government’s financial aid, the zoo was opened in 1989, the only one in the city at that time. During its peak time, the zoo had some big animals, including a tiger and a lion. The business later became worse because visitors were not interested in the zoo’s “old, weak, sick and disabled” animals.
Using his pension (退休金) to operate the zoo, Mr. Luo refused to listen to other people’s advice to close it. “It is not just a zoo; it provides the habitat for the animals,” he explained. “If the zoo is closed, where can these animals go? They cannot even survive in the wild.”
As he operates the zoo, he keeps on rescuing animals. A black bear with one paw injured was saved 17 years ago. A dog named Dianzi was saved when its former owner planned to abandon (遗弃) it. A monkey that has been at the zoo for nearly 30 years is almost blind because of camera flashes from visitors who took photos. For those animals that died, Luo buried them on the nearby mountain.
Luo said he remembers every animal’s name. “Animals and humans are born equal,” he said. “We should respect their right to survive.”
    24. Why is the zoo called the “world’s loneliest zoo”?
    A. There are few animals in the zoo. B. Few people know the old man.
    C. There aren’t many people visiting the zoo. D. The gatekeeper lost family members.
    25. How did Luo get the animals originally?
    A. By buying some animals locked in cages. B. By stealing or hunting some big animals.
    C. By finding animals released from other zoos. D. By picking up dying animals in the wild.
    26. What was the reason why Luo’s business went worse?
    A. Visitors took no interest in the unhealthy animals.
    B. Local government refused to offer financial support.
    C. He used up all of his pension so that the zoo was closed.
    D. Children were frightened by the wild tiger and lion.
    27. Which of the following best describes Luo Yingjiu?
    A. Adventurous and humorous. B. Warm-hearted and determined.
    C. Creative and outgoing. D. Generous and funny.

The Hadza hunter-gatherers of Tanzania live a life that has not changed much over ten thousand years. They have no crops, no house animals, no permanent shelters. In spite of long exposure to agriculturalist groups around them, the Hadza have maintained their lifestyle.
The story of the spread of agriculture is the story of growing population density (密度). Villages formed, then cities, then nations. Agriculture’s rise, however, came with a price. It introduced infectious diseases, social inequality, occasional famines (饥荒) and war. Professor Jared Diamond of UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) has called the adoption of agriculture “the worst mistake in human history” —a mistake from which we have never recovered.
Looking at the Hadza, you can see why he came to this conclusion. They do not engage in warfare. They do not live densely (稠密地) enough to be threatened by an infectious outbreak. They have no known history of famine (饥荒). The Hadza diet is more stable (稳定的) and varied than that of most of the world’s citizens. They live almost entirely free of possessions. They enjoy an extraordinary amount of leisure time, “working”—actively pursuing food—only four to six hours a day.
The chief reason the Hadza have been able to maintain their lifestyle so long is that their homeland is not an inviting place. Recently, however, population growth has brought a flood of people into Hadza lands. The region has generally been viewed by outsiders as unused, a place in need of development. The Hadza, who by nature are not a combative (好战的) people, have almost always moved away instead of fighting.
There are many things to envy about the Hadza, mostly what free spirits they appear tobe. Free from schedules, jobs, bosses, bills, traffic, taxes, laws, social duties and money. But who of us could live like them? It’s incredibly risky. Medical help is far away. One bad fall from a tree, one bite from a snake, and you’re dead. The fact is that it’s too late for us to go back to the Hadza lifestyle. Of greater concern is that soon it may be impossible for them to maintain theirs.
    28. What does the underlined word “It” in paragraph 2 refer to?
    A. Agriculture’s rise. B. The growth of population.
    C. The formation of village. D. The appearance of a city.
    29. What’s the characteristic of the Hadza?
    A. They are always busy in all seasons. B. They like fighting with the other nations.
    C. They are often in hunger because of fight. D. They are always leading a free life without fight.
    30. What can be learned from the last paragraph?
    A. It’s convenient for the people of Hadza to get medical care.
    B. It’s worth visiting the beautiful scenery of the Hadza.
    C. Visitors can be welcomed warmly by the people of the Hadza.
    D. The author is worried about the current situation of the Hadza.
    31. Which is the best title for the text?

Nada Nafisa, Aya Al Zayed and Fatimah Ghazi, all 16, are grade 10 pupils at GEMS Al Khaleej International School. They have created the Eco-current energy production unit that harvests “leftover” electrons to harness (利用) electricity from plants.
Nafisa and her friends came up with the idea of Eco-current for a school competition. They decided to work on clean energy in a creative way. And then they showed Eco-current at Expo 2020 Dubai.
The pupils found research from the Netherlands about producing energy from plants using a run of electrons. This approach towards green energy does not harm the plant. For now, the pupils know that the technology can be used to power phones or smaller devices, using electricity produced from moss (苔藓). With bigger units and more research on the most suitable types of plants, the pupils are sanguine larger machines can be powered—such as washing machines, coffee machines, and even a house.
Fellow (同事的) team member Al Zayed said, “Our school conducts a Steam (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) Exhibition Day every year, where we have to show our proposed solution to different problems. We chose the clean energy category and started researching new technologies that can be used for producing green energy. We found that we can produce energy from plants. A group of scientists that started this idea in the Netherlands inspired us and we thought of improving it.”
Another team member Fatimah Ghazi said, “We definitely hope that we will be able to finish our work and build the final prototype (原型) that will work well and produce enough energy to power a house at an affordable cost.”
Ruba Tarabay, Middle School science lead at GEMS Al Khaleej International School, said, “I was so excited to see that they were able to show their project at Expo and the judges were really impressed with this idea of producing clean energy for our future.”
    32. What do the first three paragraphs mainly tell us?
    A. Different methods of producing electricity in modern society.
    B. The performance of Nada Nafisa and her fellows at Expo 2020 Dubai.
    C. The advantages of using “leftover” electronic to produce electricity.

    Dear Tom,
I am more than delighted to receive your invitation. But it’s a pity that I can’t accompany you to visit the Science and Technology Museum.
My mother was ill in hospital last Wednesday. My father has gone to Shanghai on business and he is so occupied with his work that he can’t spare time to look after my mother. I have no choice but to look after her in the hospital. I express my heartfelt apology to you for it.
I sincerely wish you could have a good time in the museum. And if possible, maybe we could make another appointment next weekend.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

M: Would you like to go to the nearest restaurant to have a big lunch after my tennis lesson on Saturday morning? We could then go to the cinema.
W: I’d love to, but I have to see a doctor at 11:00.
    (Text 2)
    W: Mike, what’s wrong?
M: Bob was injured this morning when playing basketball. Now our team needs one more player, or we can’t continue this game. What should I do?
    (Text 3)
M: I think it is obvious that you never listen to a word I say, so what’s the point in discussing it now? You shouldn’t have bought that car. You asked me what I thought and then you took no notice.
    W: Sorry, Dad.
    (Text 4)
W: Tom, my tennis lesson had just started when you rang at 10:30. Sorry I missed you. I’m so tired now. The lesson didn’t end until 12:00.
M: Have a good rest first. I’ll call you back around 2:00.
    (Text 5)
M: Mum, I can’t find our passports! I’ve searched for them on the bed. Did I leave them on the kitchen table?
W: No, I put them in a small bag and I put the bag by the front door so I wouldn’t forget it. That’s where they are!
    (Text 6)
M: You want to spend one week in Nevada. But how are we going to make it all the way to California if we do that?
W: Our friends are waiting in California, but I don’t want to hurry through Nevada. I want to get out and camp for a few days.
M: Well, I do want to try out my new fishing equipment.
W: It would allow us to get out of the car for a while. Our friends can spend time at the beach while they wait for us.
    (Text 7)
M: Hey, I’m going to buy some pencils and notebooks. Oh, and my mum asked me to get her some hair-care products.
W: Why don’t you get some for your dad, too?
M: He doesn’t have any hair!
    W: Oh, yeah.
M: He lost his hair a long time ago, before he started his job at the hospital.
W: He is not as tall and thin as you are. I can’t really picture him as a young man.
M: He once taught in a school, like you. Sometimes he talks about going back to that life.
W: He can have my job if he wants it!
    (Text 8)
W: James, have you got a meeting in Edinburgh soon?
M: Yes, I’m going to see some customers on May 20th. Why do you ask that?
W: Oh, because I’m going to visit my relatives in Glasgow on Wednesday, and it’s quite near Edinburgh.
M: Ah... I’m going to drive to Edinburgh before Friday, but I can’t give you a lift. How will you get there?
W: I’ll go by car too, I think. No, I won’t drive. It’s a long way. I’ll fly. Then I can go and come back on the same day.
M: Good idea. I need my car because I want to do some sightseeing.
    (Text 9)
M: There’s a person at the gate of that bathroom, Dana! He was all dressed up in a fancy uniform, giving people warm towels!
W: He’s a bathroom worker in the building. He’s named David. Did you give him a tip?
M: A tip? Is that why he gave me a strange look?
W: Yeah, he wanted you to give him some money, Sam.
M: But I only have a twenty-dollar bill with me.
W: You should tip about a dollar.
M: He must have thought I was rude. Now I can never go back here.
W: It’s OK, Sam. He knows you’re not from here.
M: How did you know you were supposed to give the guy money?
W: I had been here five times before, and someone told me.
M: Well, I can just tip him twice the next time I come here.
W: You’ll be coming here every week to get your salary, so just be nice to him.
    (Text 10)
W: Home. Few words in the English language have such a special meaning. Home is a place where you can relax, kick back and just be yourself. Just about everyone has a strong opinion of what makes a house a home. And for most people in America, home should be, above all, comfortable. Americans like their homes to reflect their personal tastes. Many do-it-yourselfers enjoy fixing up their house and making it more “livable”. They often try to create a nice atmosphere so that when they’re at home, they’ll really feel “at home”. Sofas and chairs may be heavily filled and arranged in groupings which are helpful for relaxing conversations. The bathroom even receives special attention. Beautiful soaps, colourful wallpaper and decorative curtains decorate the “comfort room” in many homes. And on average, Americans have more bathrooms than any other people in the world.
