More than two thirds of the world's polar bears will be wiped out by 2050, according to a shocking new study. By then, scientists say, global warming will have melted 42 percent of the Arctic sea ice. By 2100, only a very few of these important creatures will be left.
The report has been produced by, the US Geological Survey. The scientists have published their findings in the hope of influencing US Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne, who has been asked to put polar bear son the US endangered species list.
Polar bears depend on floating se nice as a platform for hunting seals, which are their main food. Without enough ice, polar bears would be forced to go on to the land, where they are poorly skilled hunters, and would be unlikely to adapt to the life on the land in-time. Experts say few little bears would survive and the stress could make many females unable to get pregnant.
The team of American and Canadian scientists spent six months studying bears, on the ground, from spotter planes and in the lab, using computer models. Some team members fear the result is even worse for the bears than what their report says. They say the Arctic is warming faster than anywhere in the world and much faster than their computer had been forecasting. Satellite observations have shown that the ice has decreased to an all-time low.
However, not everyone in the scientific community believes that global warming is happening on such an alarming scale. Another investigation has found that polar bears are still being hunted by wealthy “sportsmen” who want their skins and heads. At least ten international companies offer bear-hunting trips.
    28. What do we know about Dirk Kempthorne according to the passage?
    A. He is an animal scientist.
    B. He is a protector of animals working for the US government.
    C. He was asked to put polar bears on the US endangered species list.
    D. He offered to put polar bears on the endangered species list.
    29. Why will polar bears die out if there is not enough sea ice?
    A. Because polar bears can't catch enough food without ice.
    B. Because polar bears eat ice when they feel thirsty.
    C. Because polar bears will be easily found by hunters without ice.
    D. Because most female bears are used to giving birth under ice.
    30. After a six-month study, some scientists fear that .
    A. there is something wrong with their computers.
    B. polar bears will disappear even faster than they ever expected.
    C. their computer models are not as accurate as they expected.
    D. global warming will destroy everything in the Arctic.
    31. What does the writer want to tell us in the last paragraph?
    A. The forecast about the future of polar bears is not correct.
    B. Global warming won't have any influence on hunting trips in the Arctic.
    C. Polar bears are an endangered species as a result of bear-hunting.
    D. People don't draw enough attention to the protection of endangered species.

A new study suggests that dark markings on the planet Mars represents and-not water. The research in 2015 suggested that lines on some Martian hills were evidence of water. Yet American scientists now say these lines appear more like dry, flows of sand. If water is present.it is likely to be a small amount. Water in liquid form would be necessary for microbial(微生物的) life.
NASA, the American space agency, said more research is needed. Michael Meyer is the lead scientist for NASA's Mars exploration programme. He noted that the latest study does not reject the presence of water. But he admitted, “It just may not be as exciting as the idea of rivers going down the sides of cliffs(悬崖) .”
The new findings come from a team led by Colin Dundas of the United States Geological Survey. His team measured 151 of these lines in 10 areas. Most of the line send with slopes between 28 degrees and 35 degrees. These measurements are similar to actives and dunes(沙丘) on both Mars and Earth. A small covering of dust that moves and sometimes becomes lighter might help explain the markings. They usually appear in the Martian summertime, and then disappear until the next year. If these lines are dry, “this suggests that recent Mars has not had large volumes of liquid water,” the researchers wrote. Dundas and his research team say that many questions remain.
“I still think that Mars has a great potential for having had life early on in its history,” Meyer said. “As long as that's true, we also have a reasonable possibility of life still being on Mars. It just happens to be cryptic or well hidden.”
NASA currently has no robotic vehicle—either on Mars or in development—with the ability to climb steep slopes. The lack of such equipment has engineers coming up with ideas like Martian helicopters or planes without pilots.
    32. What do American scientists find on Mars now according to their study?
    A. A lot of little life. B. An amount of water.
    C. Some Marti am hills. D. Dark markings are sand.
    33. When do the markings come out?
    A. In Martian spring. B. In Martian summer.
    C. In Martian autumn. D. In Martian winter.
    34. What's Meyer's opinion about having life on Mars?
    A. Doubtful. B. Trustful. C. In different. D. Objective.
35.What does the underlined word“cryptic”in Paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Undiscovered B. Strange. C. Magical. D. Icy.

Paul was waiting outside for Steve. “What are you doing? Where's your stuff?” Steve lifted his baton to his shoulder when catching sight of Paul.
Paul shook his head unhappily. “I have to clean Mr Thompson's garage before I can go. With his broken arm, he can't do it himself. My mom always volunteers me to help the Thompson's. They're kind of old.”
“OK” said Steve. “I'll help you. We'll get done quicker working together.”
The boys went down the block to the Thompson's and got started. They found a couple of brooms and shovels(铲) . Before they swept, they put boxes that were strewn(遍布) around the garage floor on shelves. As Paul put a big box on a shelf, it fell off and with it fell an envelope. He picked it up. It wasn't sealed(密封) , so he opened it. There were lots of one-hundred-dollar bills.
“You've got to see this.” He pulled out a handful of bills and showed Steve with his eyes lit up. “Where did you get that?” said Steve. Paul pointed to the shelf. “It just fell down when the box fell. There's got to be a couple of thousand dollars here. If we take some, I bet no one will ever know.”
Steve furrowed his brow(皱眉) and shook his head. “Are you crazy? That's stealing.” “Well, I do a lot of chores for them and don't get paid. It's not really stealing; it's a kind of pay men f for my hard work,” Paul insisted. At that time, Steve was about to grab the money from Paul's hand when they heard a sound.

    Dear students,
I’m writing this letter to call on attention to the lecture concerning garbage classification. Considering that most students fail to classify garbage properly though they really try to, our club will organize this lecture in an attempt to guide this deed.
Garbage classification is of great significance. Firstly, not only can it cope with pollution issue effectively but more space originally occupied by wasteland will be spared. Secondly, we can undoubtedly make a difference by taking advantage of recyclable garbage.
To fulfill your obligation to live an eco-life, come and join in the lecture to be given at 3 p. m. next Sunday on the playground of our school. Only with combined efforts can we make our life better.

I totally forgot where I had put it.” In that split time, it dawned on him that what really matters is simple honesty and simple kindness.

W: Calm down, sir. Where were you last Tuesday evening? And who were you with?
M: I was staying in a hotel. I was with my wife, Joan.
W: What was the name of the hotel?
    M: The George and Dragon.
    (Text 5)
M: I can’t wait for my birthday this weekend.
W: Me too. Are you having a giant cake this year?
M: Yes, and hopefully, I get a lot of gifts. My parents have planned out the whole party already. And I know my friends are preparing to give me a big surprise.
    (Text 6)
W: Hey, I think Samantha just came in.
    M: Uh...really?
W: Yes. She is here! You should go to talk to her.
    M: Ah...no, I wouldn’t know what to say.
W: Oh, come on. Everyone knows you like her. Go and ask her to dance.
    M: Um...maybe later.
W: You have been saying that for years! We just graduated! This is your last chance.
M: You are right. Fine, I’ll do it.
    (Text 7)
W: What have you been up to lately?
M: Just spending a lot of time with my girlfriend.
W: Oh, nice. Do you two have any plans for Qixi Festival? Go to see a film?
M: No, I’m taking her out to dinner at a nice restaurant.
    W: She’ll love that.
M: I hope so. I want to do something else special for her, too.
    W: Like what?
M: I don’t know. Do you have any romantic ideas?
W: Hmm...you could always write her a poem.
M: Great idea! It’s much better than a piece of jewelry that might break or get lost.
    W: Definitely.
M: So, what are you doing with your boyfriend this Qixi Festival?
W: We’re going to the Taylor Swift concert.
    M: Sounds fun.
    (Text 8)
M: Hi! I’d like to get my hair cut.
W: Well, maybe you’ll be interested in today’s special? We’ll cut and style your hair for one unbelievable low price of $12.
M: Okay, but I just want to get my hair cut a little bit. A little off the top and sides, that’s all.
W: No problem. Okay, here we go. So, what do you do for a living?
M: I’m a lawyer, and I’m in town for a job interview, and...
    W: Oops.
M: What do you mean by saying “oops”? Hey, can I see a mirror?
W: Nothing to worry about, sir. Relax.
M: Ouch. That really hurt! What are you doing anyway? Oh, look at all my hair on the floor. How much are you really cutting off?
    W: Relax.
M: Oh, gosh, you cut my hair too short. I want to talk to the manager...now!
    W: I’m sorry, but he’s on vacation.
    M: Ugh!
    (Text 9)
M: What were you like when you were my age?
W: That was a long time ago. I was a lot like you, actually. I loved art, and I took dance lessons.
    M: I like art, too.
W: I know you do. I have hung a lot of your paintings up in the living room. I was also very shy, and I didn’t make friends very easily. Do you want to see some photos of me when I was little?
    M: Yeah!
W: Look at my silly hat! And here I am with the family dog, Buttons. He was so sweet. Oh, look, this is me with your mother when she was little. She looks just like you!
M: I think she looks like you.
W: She does look like me. I’m her mother, after all.
M: When did you meet me?
W: When you were born! I was at the hospital when your mother had you, and I was the third person to hold you. Your grandfather was the fourth. He would be very proud of you if he were still with us today. You’re a wonderful little boy.
    (Text 10)
