My father was attached to gardening by birth. One of my earliest memories is following Dad barefoot around in the garden with both hands blackened from digging (挖) in the soil. The garden is a wonderland full of possibilities.
As Dad grew older, he still loved gardening. Even when he was diagnosed with cancer, he still planted all sorts of plants. Sometimes, I would come over to visit. and we would walk together in the garden. But then something changed. Like the weeds that took over his garden, the cancer grew rapidly in Dad. I stayed with Dad twenty-four hours a day and I found myself in all kinds of uncomfortable situations with Dad until I promised to look after the garden.
Though I had heard the words of the doctor, what really made me believe that Dad was dying was the state of his garden. That year, he only planted tomatoes. Too tired to weed them, he just tied them with strong strings (绳子) to the fence and let them be. It made me sad to see them ignored, so I would come over and water them once in a while, and remove the weeds. I still remember the day I picked the last tomato from the vine (藤). That day was one of the saddest I had ever experienced in my life.
Three years ago, I decided to plant my own garden. I decided I would start out with a few tomatoes. That morning when I moved to the garden, something caught the corner of my eyes and I had to smile. It was my eight-year-old son Nathan, standing barefoot in the soil, happily playing in the soil.

This summer we witnessed interview teams at the North Pole wearing short sleeve shirts due to the warm weather. A study published on Aug 29 revealed more concerning issues in the supposedly coldest area of the world. Zombie ice from a massive Greenland ice sheet was confirmed to be melting, which would eventually raise global sea levels by at least 10 inches (27 centimeters) on its own, reported Associated Press (AP).
Zombie ice is the kind of ice that is still attached to thicker areas of ice, but is no longer getting fed by larger glaciers. Since glaciers are getting less snow to complement the amount of ice melted, once the zombie ice is melted, it cannot be re-formed.
Scientists decided to look at the balance of the ice. In perfect equilibrium(平衡), snow in the mountains of Greenland flows down and thickens the sides of glaciers, balancing out what’s molting on the edges, according to AP. But in the last few decades, there is less refill and more melting, creating an imbalance.
Study co-author William Colgan at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland told AP that 3.3 percent of Greenland’s total ice volume will melt eventually. “Starving would be a good phrase for what’s happening to the ice,” Colgan added.
With a great number of natural resources buried under the earth, areas of melted ice revealed treasures that attracted the world’s richest men. According to CNN, in early August, there was a “treasure hunt” in Greenland. Billionaires, including Bill Gates and others, financially backed KoBold Metals, a US-based mineral exploration company, to explore the rare metals under the glaciers in Greenland. The company told CNN that since there were enough minerals to power hundreds of millions of electric vehicles the critical resource is capable of powering the green energy transition.
While investors are taking advantage of global warming , experts express their concerns that the mineral exploration is likely to worsen the local environment, draining up the world’s resources at a faster rate.
28.What do we know about zombie ice?
A.It will melt away from the ice sheet.
B.It’s independent from large glaciers.
C.It has increased sea levels by up to 10 inches.
D.It’s complemented by nearby natural resources.
29.What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.What larger glaciers exactly are.
B.Why melted zombie ice can’t be re-formed.
C.What the melting of zombie ice can lead to.
D.How zombie ice functions in the ecosystem.
30.What’s the experts’ attitude toward the “treasure hunt” in Greenland?
A.Supportive. B.Tolerant. C.Worried. D.Indifferent.
31.What’s the main purpose of the article?
A.To comment on the “treasure hunt”.
B.To report on the melting zombie ice.
C.To show the green energy transition.
D.To introduce the mineral exploration.

People who frequently eat fruit are more likely to report greater positive mental wellbeing and are less likely to report symptoms of depression than those who do not, according to new research from the College of Health and Life Sciences, Aston University. The team also found that people who eat savoury (咸味的) snacks such as crisps (薯片), which are low in nutrients, are more likely to report greater levels of anxiety.
Published in the British Journal of Nutrition, the study surveyed 428 adults from across the UK and looked at the relationship between their consumption of fruit, vegetables, sweet and savoury snacks, and their psychological health. The research found that both nutrient-rich fruit and nutrient-poor savoury snacks appeared to be linked to psychological health. They also found that there was no direct association between eating vegetables and psychological health. Based on the survey, the more often people ate fruit, the lower they scored for depression and the higher for mental wellbeing, independent of the overall quantity of fruit intake. By contrast, there was no link between these everyday memory lapses (差错) and fruit and vegetables intake or sweet snacks, suggesting a unique relationship between these nutrient-poor savoury snacks, everyday mental lapses, and psychological health.
Lead author, PhD student Nicola-Jayne Tuck commented, “Very little is known about how diet may affect mental health and wellbeing, and while we did not directly examine causality here, our findings could suggest that frequently snacking on nutrient-poor savoury foods may increase everyday mental lapses, which in turn reduces psychological health.”
“It is possible that changing what we snack on could be a really simple way to improve our mental wellbeing. Conversely, it is also possible that the forthcoming restriction of processed snacks at checkouts, due to come in this October, could not only improve the country’s physical health, but mental health too.”
“Overall, it’s definitely worth trying to get into the habit of reaching for the fruit bowl.”
32.Which may lead to greater level of anxiety?
A.Savoury snacks B.Fruit C.Vegetables D.Grain
33.What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A.Rich fruit appears not to be linked to psychological health.
B.The more fruit people eat, the lower they score for depression.
C.There is a relation between the nutrient-poor snacks and mental health.
D.There is a direct link between eating vegetables and psychological health.
34.What does the underlined word “causality” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The relation between fruit and vegetables.
B.The relation between exercise and health.
C.The relation between snacks and mental health.
D.The relation between diet and mental health and wellbeing
35.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Eating habits can prevent disease.
B.Eating unhealthy snacks often is harmful to health.
C.Eating vegetables often can improve mental health.
D.Eating fruit often may contribute to mental health.

International tourism is becoming interestingly popular, and large numbers of people from all over the world come to visit famous places such as the Great Wall of China and the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. 36 They've thrown rubbish everywhere, brought more traffic and even done serious damage to ancient relics.
As for the damage, there are many different causes. For example, the paintings in the Sistine Chapel are being damaged by people breathing onto them when they visit. 37 That may raise the humidity (湿气) of the air and damage the paintings. Damage in other places such as the Great Wall is because of tourists climbing on delicate (脆弱的) areas. Besides, roads have also been built to help visitors climb the Wall easily. These activities can cause a lot of damage to the area.
38 Firstly, we have to cut down tourist numbers, because fewer visitors will result in less damage. Secondly, we should make strict rules about which areas people can visit and what they can do when they get there. 39 People will not be allowed to walk off the paths. Visitors to indoor places can be asked to wear masks to protect the paintings.
In short, it is necessary to control tourism at famous places. 40 And people who live hundreds of years later will have no chance to see these great places.
A. For example, special paths can be built.
B. What can we do to deal with these problems?
C. The Great Wall was built over 2,000 years ago.
D. However, these visitors have caused many problems.
E. Traveling is the best way for us to get to know the world.
F. If we do not do this, these places will disappear from our planet.

Dad and Mom had got to go on a four-day business trip. They taught their elder son Daniel and younger daughter Jane how to feed and look after their dog, Spot, how to take good care of themselves—learning to cook if they could, or ordering pizza—with money left on the table—if they were busy, and told them to keep their rooms clean and tidy. They asked Daniel to be in charge.
On the very morning when the parents left, Mom kissed them and said to Daniel gently, “Young man, do take care of Spot and Jane.” Daniel promised, “I will, Mom.”
Too excited to fall asleep again,Daniel and Jane jumped out of bed, calling out each other to get up. Their pet dog, Spot, heard the similar voice and rushed in, with a ball in its mouth. Jane stuck(伸) her head into Daniel’s room,“Spot got up an hour earlier. Let’s walk it.” Daniel said excitedly, “I’m coming, but, Jane, don’t forget to keep your room clean and tidy.” “I will.”
They ran with the dog in the yard and threw the ball away for Spot to bring it back. They had fun playing with Spot the whole morning. Washing Spot was slow and tiring as it was the first time they had done it. Then Daniel settled down to his homework while Jane did her reading with interest.
The following day, Jane begged her brother to order pizza for lunch. Daniel agreed excitedly, “We haven’t tasted that for long and we behave ourselves, right?”After a while, he added, “We should save money, too.” Within half an hour, they treated themselves to a big pizza. However, in the afternoon, Spot looked sick, lying lazily and unwilling to move. Daniel was concerned about the dog and took it to the pet clinic immediately with Jane as their parents had done.
