There’s a park close to my house, with a small lake in one corner that’s home to many creatures. Every Sunday morning, I go jogging in this park. As I circle the lake, I notice an elderly woman sitting by the water with a metal cage beside her.
Today, my curiosity made me stop and approach her.
As I took a closer look, I saw that the cage was actually a small metal trap, and there were a few turtles walking around the trap, unharmed. The lady took one of the turtles in her hands and gently rubbed the shell (壳) with a sponge (海绵) brush.
I came over to say hello to her politely. “Good morning,” I said. “I come here for jogging every Sunday morning and I see you sitting here by the lake. Please don’t mind my curiosity and innocence, but I really want to know what you’re doing to the turtles.”
The lady smiled and said, “I am cleaning the turtle’s shell. Turtles gradually get more and more algae (水藻) and other dirt on their shells, which weighs them down and prevents their swimming abilities. It also reduces their ability to absorb heat. Over time, their shells become weak and rot (腐烂) away.”
“Oh wow! That’s really thoughtful of you!” I shouted in shock.
She continued, “Every Sunday morning, I spend a couple of hours by the lake to relax and help out these little guys stay clean. Strange as it sounds, this is my little way to make a difference in the world.”
I thought for a while and said, “But all freshwater turtles have algae and other dirt on their shells. They live with that their whole lives, don’t they?”
“Yes, sadly, they can’t help it,” she replied.

Frank Mason opened a new art gallery. He intended to use the gallery to showcase the best artworks from local artists, many of whom deserved to be more well-known. He hanged a highly detailed landscape by Sheila, his favorite artist. It was valuable as she had disappeared several years ago.
A few years later, Frank had grown his gallery into a business. One cold day, Frank stood at the window and watched the strong winds send snow down the street outside. He noticed a woman standing outside. Snowflakes covered her shoulders. He opened the door and greeted her. The woman shook her head. “I haven’t got any money. I just wanted to get out of the snow for a bit. w Frank felt bad for her being stuck out in the cold.
“Do you like art?” he asked. “I love art. Unfortunately, I can only afford to visit free galleries. The lady quickly spoke out a few names. Frank was surprised to hear she loved many of the same little-known artists he did. He would never expect this poor woman to have such a good understanding of art and he noticed the woman’s hands trembled severely.
“Don’t mind my shivers (颤抖),” she said “I’ve struggled to get medication since I lost my home. Frank felt a rush of sympathy. He showed her around the gallery and finally decided to end the tour with his favorite piece. He opened the door to the room that contained his private collection. The woman pointed to the landscape on display. “That’s mine,” she said “I painted that. ”
“What?” Frank was shocked. The woman showed Frank her social security card.
“You’re one of my favorite artists. What happened to you?” Frank asked. “I developed Parkinson’s disease (帕金森病).” Sheila sighed. “I couldn’t paint anymore.” Frank offered her a job helping to care for his children and live with his family in order to cure her disease.

My husband and I enjoy seeing life through the eyes of our children. It’s amazing to watch as they discover their world.
While we were outdoors last summer enjoying the sunshine, our oldest daughter, Kaytlin, called me to the doorway. Beneath the steps was a baby red squirrel.
We watched it from a distance, not wanting to disturb it or scare off its mother. But after a long wait—and looking all around our house for signs of a nest or a mother—we realized the tiny squirrel was lost.
Shaking terribly, he was weak, thin, and hungry. We tried to find an expert to help, but the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife website showed that there were no wildlife experts in our area. After some quick research, we concluded that the best way to give the squirrel a fighting chance was to care for him ourselves. So a trip to the local store for milk and supplies was in order. More research taught us how much to feed him, how to estimate his age, how and when to wean (断奶) him, and that we should let him go as soon as he could survive on his own.
Our daughters and I took turns in feeding “Squirt.” Kaytlin took on the most responsibility. She taught him to eat from a bottle, and she woke in the night for his feeds.
To our relief, Squirt soon became healthy and strong. Within a few weeks he became more active. He would chatter (吱吱叫) for his next meal, playfully go around the girls, and lie down on them for sleep. It wasn’t long before he was weaned onto solid food and reintroduced to the wild.
His first few visits to the great outdoors were funny. Just like a child, he would play in the grass some and then run back to Kaytlin for safety. Soon she had him climbing trees and finding nest material.

The day was Thankful Thursday, our “chosen day” of service. It’s a weekly tradition that my two little girls and I began years ago. Thursday has become our day to go out in the world and make a positive contribution, however small it is. On this particular Thursday, we had no idea exactly what we were going to do, but we knew that something would present itself.
Driving along a busy Houston road, I prayed for guidance in our quest to fulfill our weekly Act of Kindness. Around the noon hour, my two little ones wasted no time in letting me know their hunger, chanting, “McDonald’s, McDonald’s, McDonald’s” as we drove along. And I began searching earnestly for the nearest McDonald’s. Suddenly I realized that almost every crossroad I passed through was occupied by a beggar. And then it hit me!
If my two little ones were hungry, then all these beggars must be hungry, too. Perfect! Our Act of Kindness had presented itself. We were going to buy lunch for the beggars. After finding a McDonald’s and ordering two Happy Meals for my girls, I ordered an additional 15 lunches and we set out to deliver them. It was exciting. We would pull alongside a beggar, make a contribution, and tell him or her that we hoped things would get better. Then we’d say, “Oh, by the way, here’s lunch.” And then we would head to the next crossroad.
It was the best way to give. There wasn’t enough time for us to introduce ourselves or explain what we were going to do, nor was there time for them to say anything back to us. The Act of Kindness was anonymous and empowering for each of us, and we loved what we saw in the rearview mirror: a surprised and delighted person holding up his lunch bag and just looking at us as we drove off. It was wonderful!

My name is Yolanda. Whenever I recall the autumn 20 years ago, my heart is filled with mixed feelings. Joyce, aged 18---just one year older but much taller than me--was my best friend, so do our parents.
“Joyce is a knock out,” Mom would say so. I would have protested if these remarks were on anyone else. But Joyce had her unique charm--the long light hair curled slightly on her temples, the large and beaming eyes; an invariable smile on her cheeks whether in the brilliance of sunshine or in the twilight of dusk--the figure was too graceful for anyone to defend.
Sure enough, that autumn witnessed her fortune take over---signing with a modeling agency, now already doing registration and runway work.
On my 17th birthday, Father gave me his refurbished (翻新的) SVT Cobra R as he promised--a gift I like most but to be wasted on me for now, as I did not come of age for a driving licence. I promised Dad I would be driving around in a year’s time.
But the urge to have a go had been scratching me.
That weekend, I proposed to drive Joyce to the movie’s downtown as my gift of congratulations on her job offer. She accepted my offer of a ride in my beloved car. I reminded her to put on the lap belt. There we went, putting some fries on the seat between us to share.
It was a purple night, and I was driving my best friend around contentedly. Turning around a curve too fast, before I knew it, I skidded along and hit the guardrail in the middle of the road. My cheekbone cracked on the steering wheel, the car came to a stop with the passenger door open just a few feet from me. There under the moonlight on the path, French fries, the dash (仪表板), and my lap. An impossible amount of blood on Joyce’s face, flaps of skin were hanging out of her eyes...
We were rushed to the hospital in separate ambulances. Later, I learned that I was to recover soon. When I asked about Joyce, my mother hesitated for a moment, then spoke quietly, “She’s all right, but the scar above her eye--best plastic surgeon in the city, but end of her modeling career.”

On his way home, Tommy saw a gray, long-haired cat sitting on the sidewalk. As he stopped to pet her, he noticed that she was not wearing a collar(项圈). She rubbed her head against his hand. She reminded Tommy of Smoky, the cat he had when he was younger. Smoky’s fur had been long and gray too. Tommy petted the cat for a while. Then he said, “I have to go,” and continued to go home. To his surprise, the cat followed him on the way.
When Tommy was home, he walked up the porch(门廊)steps and went into the kitchen. The cat followed him up the steps and sat quietly outside the door, watching him closely. Tommy made a sandwich. The cat continued to stare at him. Tommy sighed. “I know it’s not a good idea to feed a stray cat(流浪猫),” he said, “but you look so hungry! I can’t sit here and eat without feeding you!”
Tommy put some turkey on a plate for the cat. As Tommy watched, she ate every piece of the turkey and then began to clean her face. “Wow!” Tommy said, “You must have been starving. I wonder how long it has been since someone fed you.”
Tommy finished his sandwich and looked at the cat. Her long fur was matted(缠结), Tommy remembered that Smoky’s brush and toys were in the storeroom. “I’m going to clean you up a little,” Tommy said to the cat. He found Smoky’s brush and got to work. As the dirt came out, the cat’s fur began to get lighter. “Hey!” Tommy said, realizing the truth. “You’re not gray—you’re white!”
After the brush, the cat climbed onto Tommy’s lap. “You’re so friendly. You probably belong to someone,” Tommy said. “I bet you’re just lost.” When Tommy’s father came home, Tommy showed him the lovely cat. “Why don’t you make some notices to put up in the neighborhood?” his father suggested.

As a young boy, I sometimes traveled the country roads with my dad. He was a rural mail carrier, and on Saturdays he would ask me to go with him. Driving through the countryside was always an adventure: There were animals to see, people to visit, and chocolate cookies if you knew where to stop, and Dad did.
In the spring, Dad delivered boxes full of baby chickens, and when I was a boy it was such fun to stick your fingers through one of the holes of the boxes and let the baby birds peck on your fingers.
On Dad’s final day of work, it took him well into the evening to complete his rounds because at least one member from each family was waiting at their mailboxes to thank him for his friendship and his years of service. “Two hundred and nineteen mailboxes on my route,” he used to say, “and a story at every one.” A young girl wrote letters but had no stamps, so she left a few buttons on the envelope in the mailbox; Dad paid for the stamps. On cold days Dad might find one of his customers waiting for him with a cup of hot chocolate.
A dozen years ago, when I traveled back to my hometown on the sad occasion of Dad’s death, the mailboxes along the way reminded me of some of his stories. I thought I knew them all, but that wasn’t the case.
As I drove home, I noticed two lamp poles, one on each side of the street. When my dad was around, those poles supported wooden boxes about four feet off the ground. One box was painted green, and the other was red, and each had a long narrow hole at the top with white lettering: SANTA CLAUS, NORTH POLE. For years children had dropped letters to Santa through those holes.
While Mom and I were sitting at the kitchen table I heard footsteps. There, at the door, stood Frank Townsend, Dad’s postmaster and great friend for many years. So we all sat down at the table and began to tell stories.

Two years ago, homeless Minnie was adopted by a single rich woman. Life did get a bit easier ever since she was taken in by her foster mom, but the little girl was still not happy. How she wished she could have a father!
One morning in class, Minnie’s teacher, Mr Thompson, made a surprising announcement, making Minnie frown (皱眉) again.
“Kids, tomorrow is Father’s Day! And at school, we’re all celebrating it by having breakfast with Dads! All of you get to bring your dads or anyone you look up to as your dad to school tomorrow. We’ll all sit in one circle, share funny stories, and have breakfast together.”
“What a terrible idea!” Minnie muttered (咕哝) under her breath.
For the rest of the day, most kids were talking up their fathers: businessmen, policemen, engineers, and even an actor. Everybody had somebody who was a father figure, except for Minnie.
After school, Mr Thompson spotted the sad little girl sitting alone by the school gate.
“Are you all right, Minnie?” Mr Thompson asked. Suddenly, the child hugged his legs and cried. Minnie told her trouble to her teacher and Mr Thompson comforted her.
After getting home that evening, Mr Thompson couldn’t shake off the sadness he had seen on Minnie’s face. Suddenly, he had an idea. He opened his laptop, and as the keys on the keyboard clattered, Mr Thompson began to smile.
He was putting out a post on social media, sharing Minnie’s story and asking for a dad to volunteer for Minnie and show up to school the next day as her father figure. Thirty minutes later, his phone buzzed.
And it buzzed again and again. By the time the teacher checked his phone, he was shocked to see the number flashing across the screen.
“50 volunteers? Am I reading this right?” Mr Thompson gasped. He put on his glasses and read through all the responses on his post. He was so surprised. These 50 volunteers all wanted to come and help Minnie.

Today was Community Service Day at school. Maya’s class was going to make cards for the seniors living in a nursing home. It was also the first day Maya would be wearing her leg brace (腿支架) to school, which was designed to help her walk more steadily and smoothly.
It was a cold autumn morning, Maya looked down, feeling embarrassed. To make it lovelier, she had delicately decorated the brace with pretty butterfly patterns. Still, she was unsure about others’ reaction. All morning at school, kids kept glancing at her brace. To her relief, they didn’t say anything.
In the classroom, Maya was drawing little green buds (芽) and pretty flowers when her friend Samir came over and sat by her. She felt his eyes fixed on her brace and heard him asking, “What’s that for?” Not knowing what to say, Maya pretended she didn’t hear him. After a few seconds of awkwardness, she glanced back at him, and found that he looked a little sad.
After lunch, the class set off. The nursing home was on a small hill and all of them walked there happily along the path. Maya found that the brace did make it easier for her to walk up.
Maya and Samir were paired up with a lady who was 83 years old. There at the end of the hall in a wheelchair, with a big smile on her face, sat the lady, wearing a pink coat, with red lipstick and beautiful earrings. She looked bright and full of life. Moving flexibly and fast towards Maya and Samir, she greeted first. “I’m Joan, ” she said cheerfully, “Glad to meet you. ”
Maya and Samir handed her the cards they made. Joan looked at Samir’s card carefully and spoke with admiration, “You’ve written a poem! That’s so artistic!” Samir’s face reddened with shyness. Then Joan turned to Maya’s picture. “The first flowers of spring!” she cried in delight. “You really have a gift for using colour!” she said. Clearly, Joan’s praise added great power into Maya.

My heart pounded as I stared at the screen. I re-read the message from my friend, Noelle. Someone had upset her by sharing her personal news, a recent development Noelle had shared with only a few close friends, including me. She didn’t know who let the word out, but she was hurt and disappointed.
I felt so guilty. I knew how the news had got out because I had been the one to tell someone else. Honestly, I hadn’t realized she meant to keep it so close to home, but at the same time I’d known it wasn’t a good idea when I started to tell it to someone else.
Did she really not know it was me? It would have been easy to come clean and apologize if her note was an accusation. But it read as though it had been copied and pasted to several people. So I chose the coward’s way out.
“I’m so sorry that happened to you,” I typed. “How awful that your confidence was broken.”
I hoped that would do. Her reply came back within seconds: “Thank you.”
Surely, that would be good enough. I didn’t take responsibility for my actions, but I’d sympathized with her pain. It would be okay for me to remain anonymous (不公开姓名的) as long as I was sorry, wouldn’t it?
But, deep down, I knew I’d been the one to break faith and hurt her. I was ashamed, not only of my original action, but because I’d put wrong upon wrong by covering it up.
I felt miserable at church on Sunday. I tried to avoid communication. Watching others take part while I sat in silence was a painful experience-one I never wanted to repeat.
Later, the speaker in the church challenged us to examine ourselves and see if anything stood in the way to being the best of ourselves, and if so, we should not to let it stop us and we needed to clear it away.

I was a single mother of four children, working at a low-paid job. Money was always tight, but we had a roof over our heads, food on the table, and clothes on our backs. I always told myself to be brave and strong, just for my four children. I hoped all my efforts would be worthwhile, as long as my children could grow up healthily. Every New Year’s Day we drove downtown to enjoy a special dinner, but the big excitement for the kids was the fun of shopping at the mall. This was a tradition of my family, so they all looked forward to the coming of the day. They talked and planned for weeks ahead of time, asking each other what they wanted for New Year’s Day.
The big day arrived and we started out early. I gave each of the four kids a twenty-dollar bill and asked them to search for gifts. Then everyone scattered (散开) with the bill. I sat at a table in a cafe waiting for my children and enjoying an instant of silence. It must be a happy day.
Back in the car driving home, everyone was excited about the day, laughing and asking each other about what they had bought. I noticed Ginger, my younger daughter had only one small and flat bag with her. I could see enough through the plastic bag to tell that she had bought candy bars—fifty-cent candy bars! What did she do with that twenty-dollar bill I had given her? I was angry. After getting home, I called her into my bedroom and closed the door. I couldn’t hold back my anger and shouted at her, “What about the rest of the money? No one would be convinced all these candies are worth 20 dollars. What did you do with the rest of the money?”

For as long as I could remember, I had wanted to travel into the Amazon jungle. During the last summer break at university, I decided to travel there. I didn’t have much money. So I found the least expensive flight to Lima, Peru. Once there, I planned on traveling to the town of La Merced. To get there, however, I had to take a taxi for the next fourteen hours.
By the time I reached La Merced, I found a hotel and asked the man at the front desk if there were any travel routes into the jungle. His simple answer was “no”. In fact, there was no way to go farther into the jungle except by hiring a boat to travel down the Amazon. However, I found that an impossible choice.
At that point, I decided to go out and get something to eat. I had walked less than a minute from the hotel when a rainstorm swept across the town. I raced ahead to the closest restaurant to get out of the rain.
I took a table by myself and ordered a meal. I was very tired. I was also feeling sorry for myself. I had flown down to Peru and then taken a fourteen—hour journey in a taxi only to discover there was no way to get into the jungle.
Then, I saw an old man. He headed over to my table. “Hi, my name’s Fritz,” he said in English. With a smile, I introduced myself and we talked for half an hour. I told him my story. He could see I was tired and unhappy, and his eyes softened as he listened.
“Come with me and stay with me and my wife Helga at our home in the jungle. We have a coffee plantation (种植园) there. You can stay as long as you’d like. At six o’clock tomorrow morning, I’ll pick you up at the hotel and take you on a trip into the jungle,” Fritz said.
“Thank you very much,” I said. “Six o’clock tomorrow morning.”
Honestly, I didn’t expect he would appear.

At 6:00 the next morning, I heard a car honking (鸣喇叭) outside my hotel.
