In May 1804, Lewis and Clark led the Corps of Discovery to begin the journey on the Missouri River. Lewis’ main job was to lead the men on the ship. And anyway, he needed to make maps of the geography of the unknown land. As for Clark, he usually studied plants and animals along the way.
As the trip continued, one of their men became ill and died. They also had to do their best to find food and stay healthy during the winter months.
Sacagawea, a Native American, joined the Corps of Discovery in the winter of 1804. What she knew about Native American culture and her ability to speak different Native American languages made the journey much easier. Thanks to her, trade with Native Americans began.
Lewis and Clark reached the Pacific Ocean after traveling through several rivers, including the Clearwater River, Snake River and Columbia River. However, they did not find one direct (直接的) waterway that could lead boats straight to the Pacific from the Mississippi. Still, the journey was a big success.

I was on a train in Switzerland(瑞士). Thirty minutes later, the train came to a stop and the conductor’s(乘务员)voice over the loudspeaker delivered a message in German, Italian and French. I’d made the mistake of not learning any of those languages before my vacation. Everyone started getting off the train and an old woman saw that I was confused and stressed. (I had to catch an overnight train to Rome, and I was flying home from there). She could speak some English and told me that an accident had happened on the tracks(轨道). She asked me where I was trying to get to, then went and talked to some workers, and came back to tell me that we’d have to hop(换乘)trains three or four times to get there.
I was really glad she was heading the same way because it would have been impossible for me to figure it out on my own(自己弄清楚). So we went from one train station to the next, getting to know each other along the way. She was really the sweetest woman. It was a 2.5-hour journey in total, and when we made it to the final destination(目的地), we got off and said our goodbyes. I had made it just in time to catch my train to Rome. She told me she had a train to catch as well. I asked her how much farther she had to go and it turned out(结果是)that her home was two hours back the other way. She had jumped from train to train and travelled the whole just to make sure that I made it. I was in shock. Traditionally, Chinese tourists traveled in large groups organized by travel agencies(旅行社). Now, things have changed.
A survey carried out by J. Walter Thompson Intelligence showed that in the early part of the year 2018, 30 percent of Chinese travelers took adventure-based (以冒险为主的) vacations that had exciting activities, while 45 percent were interested in planning similar vacations.
The rise in need has caused younger tourists to require the services of professional guides for their travels overseas, along with personal transportation and information of local restaurants, according to Xu Zhiyun, head of the customized (定制的) trips department at Ctrip, a leading online travel agency.
"People don't want to visit crowded tourist places. Instead, they are looking for experiences that will allow them to see new cultures and hear different stories," she said, adding that the need for customized trips began to grow quickly at the beginning of 2015.
According to Xu, most people who show interest in special holidays are the middle class, because their higher incomes mean they can make their own travel ways. Also, most of them are the post-80's and 90's generations.
Xiong Yidan just had an adventure-based vacation recently. The 26-year-old gave up her job and made trips on her own to eight countries in three months, including a self-driving holiday in New Zealand. For Xiong, travel is about enjoying the whole of the trip, rather than just visiting well-known places on a strict tourist agency schedule.

A.She just visited some well-known places. B.Her vacation lasted for three weeks.
C.She took the trips alone. D.She had a guide during all her trips.
34.Why did the writer write the passage?
A.To encourage people to take vacations. B.To show us a new way of travelling.
C.To tell us how to make customized trips. D.To tell us how to keep safe during vacations.
It is nice to hike with kids, but you must know something about hiking if you want to take a happy, relaxing trip.
Start early, know what to do in a heavy rain and carry sunglasses. Take snacks, toilet paper and a bag with you. Take a whistle (口哨) for kids. You may use it if children run away.
Find a partner. Kids are naturally competitive, and you can use this to your hike. They will try to do better than each other when they go hiking. They also will keep each other interested in something new.
Do something easy. It’s good to play easy games. You can say “Does anybody see anything red that matches my shirt?” Kids will be easy and happy to answer this kind of questions.
If you aren’t excited, they won’t be either. When your kids find something they are interested in, you must show your interest in it, too.
