    Naming hurricane

New research from the University of Illinois finds that hurricanes with female names are likely to cause more deaths than those with male names. The study examined over 60 years of hurricanes which hit the US. The results showed there were higher death tolls, on average, when the hurricanes were given a female name. This wasn’t because female-named hurricanes were any more severe; rather that people’s behavior changed.

Sharon Shavitt, one of the authors of the report, explained: “In judging the intensity of a storm, people appear to be applying their beliefs about how men and women behave. This makes a female-named hurricane, such as Belle or Candy, seem gentled and less violent.” People unconsciously say to themselves: how could I be killed by a hurricane called Candy? In fact, hurricanes are named arbitrarily, and the names tell you nothing about the severity of the storm.

But, if people in the path of the storm are letting its name affect whether they take shelter, what we call it may matter more than we think. Having searched through the records, the researchers returned to the lab to test their finding experimentally. People were given a series of hypothetical storms with male and female names and asked to make judgments about their intensity and the risk they faced. The results showed that people often regarded male-named hurricanes, like Hurricane Christopher or Hurricane Victor as more intense and riskier than the female-named ones, like Hurricane Alexandra and Hurricane Christ. Shavitt continued, “People imagining a ‘female’ hurricane were not as willing to seek shelter. The fixed ideas that underlie these judgments are subtle and not necessarily hostile toward women they may involve viewing women as warmer and less aggressive than men.”

The fact is that until the late 1970s hurricanes were always given female names, as they were thought to represent women’s qualities like unpredictability. This practice — and the sexist reasoning behind it — was rightly abandoned in favour of choosing between male and female. Strangely, though, what we’ve learnt is that we’d be better off naming all hurricanes after men to take advantage of people’s fixed views.

The researchers estimate that changing a severe hurricane’s name from “Eloise” to “Charles” could potentially cut the death toll by one-third. Perhaps the naming of hurricane is one specific situation where we shouldn’t worry about being sexist, if being a little sexist is going to save lives.

    14. Hurricanes with female names are likely to cause more deaths because________.

    A. male named hurricanes are not terrible

    B. female-named hurricanes are more severe

    C. people think the female-named hurricanes are not severe

    D. people prefer to challenge the male-named hurricanes

    15. The underlined word “arbitrarily” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________.

    A. for humor B. on purpose C. by chance D. in turn

    16. According to the passage, which name can possibly cut the death toll?

    A. Eloise. B. Candy. C. Christina. D. Charles.

    17. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

    A. future hurricane’s will be named after men more often B. being sexist in naming hurricane’s helps save lives

    C. sexism in naming hurricane’s will be banned D. rules of naming hurricane will be changed

    C

In less than 2 months, the artificial intelligence (AI) program ChatGPT has become a cultural sensation (轰动). ChatGPT is developed with a technique called Reinforcement (增强) Learning from Human Feedback to train the language model, enabling it to automatically create text based on written prompts (提示). I asked it to rewrite the first scene of the classic American play Death of a Salesman. The output (输出) was an amusing conversation. This is certainly fun, but there are serious implications for generative AI programs like ChatGPT in science and academia.

Many concerns relate to how ChatGPT will change education. It certainly can write essays about a range of topics. I gave it both an exam and a final project. It did well finding factual answers, but the scholarly writing still has a long way to go. If anything, the implications for education may push academics (高校科研人员) to rethink their courses in creative ways and give assignments that aren’t easily solved by AI. That could be for the best.

More worrisome are the effects of ChatGPT on writing scientific papers. In a recent study abstracts created by ChatGPT were submitted to academic reviewers, who only caught 63% of these fakes. That’s a lot of AI-generated text that could find its way into the literature soon.

The text written by ChatGPT is not acceptable. An AI program cannot be an author. Still, according to Editorial Policies, text generated by ChatGPT (or any other AI tools) cannot be used in the work, nor can figures, images, or graphics be the products of such tools. Breaking these policies will be considered scientific misconduct (学术不端) no different from plagiarism (剽窃) of existing works.

The scientific record is one of the human efforts of struggling with important questions in the end. Machines play an important role, but as tools for the people giving the hypotheses (假设), designing the experiments and making sense of (理解) the results. Finally, the product must come from and be expressed by the wonderful computer in our heads.

    18. What does the underlined word “implications” probably mean in Paragraph1?

    A. Competitions. B. Events . C. Limitations. D. Effects.

    19. What could be ChatGPT’s benefit for education, if any?

    A. It could help better the scholarly writing.

    B. It could write essays about varieties of topics.

    C. It could be used to design difficult assignments.

    D. It could push academics to make improvements.

    20. What can be inferred about ChatGPT?

    A. It is welcomed by academics.

    B. It may cause scientific misconduct (学术不端).

    C. It is basically useless for scientific research.

    D. It works greatly to the advantage of education.

    21. Which can be a suitable title for the text?

    A. ChatGPT Is Fun, But Not an Author

    B. ChatGPT Has Become a Cultural Sensation

    C. ChatGPT Will Change Our Way of Education

    D. ChatGPT Plays an Important Role in Science

    D

There is hot, and then there is hot! Extreme heat is a period of high heat and humidity (湿度) with temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit for at least two to three days. Extreme heat is responsible for the highest number of annual deaths among all weather-related hazards (危害).

It’s not your imagination. Summers have been getting hotter and hotter with extreme heatwaves occurring earlier and more frequently. But why is this happening and can we better predict heatwaves in advance to give people time to prepare?

“Climate change is here and it’s already been changing human behavior and causing significant influence in the society. As global temperatures rise, historically excessive (过高的) temperatures are more likely to occur.” says Craig Ramseyer, an assistant professor who studies climate modeling in the department of geography at Virginia Tech.

Ramseyer says heatwaves are the most concerning because of the lack of attention they normally receive. “Hurricanes, tornadoes, and flash floods drive more media attention because of the natural attraction with the visual impact of those types of hazards. However, heat does not tend to be as attractive and it becomes very difficult to communicate the danger to the public,” said Ramseyer. “Around the world, more deaths occur due to extreme heat than from hurricanes, flooding, and drought combined. It impacts the most helpless of our citizens who do not have enough access to air conditioning, water, and other important resources.”

Since the Earth is running warmer than it used to, Ramseyer says that when these heatwave-related weather patterns take place, it results in higher extreme temperatures than we used to experience 30 years ago.

“As a global community, we need to decrease carbon emissions as soon as possible. We have rapidly developing technologies that are going to help advance the process, but the faster the better, there is no time to waste.”

    22. What can we learn from the article?

    A. Extreme heat is a No.1 death cause. B. People are suffering more extreme heat.

    C. A 100-degree heat is an extreme heat. D. Extreme heat is getting better over the years.

    23. What will Ramseyer possibly agree with?

    A. Climate change will soon affect human behaviors.

    B. High temperatures happened frequently in history.

    C. Air conditioning and water can reduce the impacts of extreme heat on people.

    D. Garbage sorting can less advance the climate change.

    24. Why is extreme heat lack of attention?

    A. Extreme heat can be stopped by technology.

    B. People have enough time to solve the climate problems.

    C. It is not easy for the public to learn the danger of extreme heat.

    D. Heatwave-related weather patterns will decrease in the future.

    25. What’s the article mainly about?

    A. Complaints about extreme heat. B. Prevention of extreme heat.

    C. Characters of extreme heat. D. Technologies behind extreme heat.
