For most people, graduation is an exciting day — the conclusion of years of hard work. My
graduation day… was not. Like everyone else in my graduating class, I had watched the economy
turn from bad to worse in my senior year. We graduates had degrees, but very limited prospects.
Numerous applications had not panned out(成功) and I knew that the next day, when my lease(租
约) ended, I would no longer have a place to call home.
The weeks ahead weren’t easy. I gathered up everything I couldn’t carry and put it into storage.
Then, because I knew my small university town couldn’t offer me any opportunities, I packed up
my car and drove to Southern California to find work. But what I thought would take a week
dragged into two, and then four, and 100 job applications later, I found myself in the exact same
spot as I was before. And the due date to begin paying back my student loans was closer.
You know that feeling when you wake up and you are just consumed with fear? Fearful of
something you can’t control — that sense of failure. Everything that happened to you thus far was
just a bad dream. That feeling became a constant in my life. Days felt like weeks, weeks like
months and those many months felt like an unending difficulty. And the most frustrating part was
no matter how much I tried, I just couldn’t seem to make any progress.
So what did I do to maintain my sanity? I wrote. Something about putting words on a page
made everything seem a little clearer—a little brighter. Something about writing gave me hope.
And if you want something badly enough...sometimes a little hope is all you need! I channeled
my frustration into a children’s book. Beyond the river was the story of an unlikely hero featuring
a little fish who simply refused to give up on his dream.
And then one day, without any sort of writing degree or contacts in the writing world — just a
lot of hard work and perseverance — I was offered a publishing contract for my first book! After
that things slowly began to fall into place. I was offered a second book deal. Then, a few months
later, I got an interview with The Walt Disney Company and was hired shortly after.
Don’t give up. Even if things look hopeless now don’t give up. Two years ago I was huddled
in my car drinking cold soup right out of the can. Things change. If you work hard, give it time,
and don’t give up, things will always get better. Often times our dreams lie in wait just a little
further upstream...all we need is the courage to push beyond the river.

Is it possible to build houses that are completely self-sufficient in providing and disposing of
their own water? Many areas of the world suffer from low rainfall. A lack of water is increasingly
becoming a problem. How is it possible to save and better use water resources in homes?
Some houses in rural areas of Australia do not have water supplied to them. The house was
like this even though the people lived in a suburb called Gelorup, only 10 kilometers from the city
of Bunbury. They collected all the water on the roof and from the gutters(排水沟) where it went
into underground pipes that led to a large water tank. From the tank the water fed back to the
house and supplied all their needs from drinking to flushing toilets. When they came to the end of
the winter rainy season, they would carefully watch the level of the water in the water tank: it had
an indicator on the side.
河西区高三英语试卷(一) 第 7 页 共 12 页
The water used by the house would go into a system below the house which purified it and
eventually released it into the ground. They weren’t allowed to use strong chemicals in cleaning
and washing the natural bacteria needed to work in the water before it was released again.
This was a great system as water was not pumped to or from their house. They were using
their own water and were self-reliant. They didn’t even get a water bill! Imagine if every house
could be built with this capacity.
The drawback was that it often seemed to be such a waste that the water filtering(过滤) down
into the ground could not be first used on the garden. When they ran low on water, it was the
garden that suffered as they had to stop watering. How often they imagined that water feeding the
flowers and vegetables.
Now there is a system, developed by an Australian company that allows people to reuse much
of that water. The system is called the Nexus eWater Recycler. On their website they explain that,
“... grey water is wastewater generated by washing people and their clothes. It accounts for nearly
half of the water used in a typical home...” Water from the bath, shower, sink dishwasher and
washing machine is pulled into the recycler. There it is made safe enough to use on gardens and in
toilets.
That surely would have solved all the water problems. Houses which do not collect their own
water as people in Gelorup did, can also still benefit from this system. With the system, most of
the water fed to the houses can be used twice over. In addition, the system has an extra component
that can be bought and installed that uses the heat from the waste bath or washing machine water
to heat up a tank of clean water.
46. What do we know about people living in Gelorup from Paragraph 2 and 3?
A. They collect all the water they could find in the underground pipes.
B. They install a system to purify the water before it's supplied to the family.
C. They employ chemicals to kill the bacteria in water before draining it.
D. They seldom worry about the volume of water in their tanks in rainy season.
47.The drawback of the system used by Gelorup is______.
A. water should be pumped into the system to be purified before releasing
B. it fails to rid the waste water of unnecessary bacteria and virus before releasing
C. people still have to pay high water bill because of its low recyclability rate
D. the waste rate is so high that people have to sacrifice gardening when lacking water
48.What’s NOT the advantage of the Nexus eWater Recyeler?
A. Water dealt with by Recycler is safer to use in gardening.
B. It improves the recyclability rate of the waste water.
C. It enables every drop of water to be recycled and used again.
D. An extra component can help reuse energy from waste water.

Youth sports in America needs a reset.
We’ve all read the cautionary tales about the crazy world of selective youth travel teams, of
one sport specialists with helicopter parents willing to spend thousands of dollars in the hope a
child’s talent can be turned into a college scholarship.
At the same time, more kids give up early on organized sports by the pressures, financial
burdens, or injuries.
The statistics are troubling. A survey conducted by the Aspen Institute and Utah State Families
in Sports Lab found that overall youth team sports participation in the US is in decline-just 38
per cent of kids are playing team sports today, down from 45 per cent a decade ago. The average
kid is quitting youth sports after less than three years — at age 11.
For those children who do keep playing, money becomes a factor. Team fees, travel costs,
coaching, equipment — the price keeps going up, driving away kids from families that can’t
afford the bill. The result is something of a paradox( 自 相 矛 盾 ): A “competitive” environment
which becomes deeply exclusive(专有的), since only a fraction of the population has the means
to compete.
“Parents who can afford to do so are investing more heavily in their child at an earlier age,”
says Tom Farrey, the founder and executive director of the Aspen Institute’s Sports & Society
program. “When you do that, you begin to push aside the families who can’t afford the youth
sport arms race. You also end up piling enormous amounts of pressure on the bodies and the
minds of the children who are still in the game.”
There have always been hyper-competitive( 超 强 度 竞 争 的 ) youth leagues of course and
adults who don’t know how to relax. But Farrey believes the growth of athletic scholarship
opportunities — and the rising costs of college — ratcheted up the stakes(加大风险).
“Parents know how expensive college is, and they start to think to themselves. ‘Huh, if I get
him on the right travel team maybe my kid can get a college athletic scholarship,’” he says. “Or,
河西区高三英语试卷(一) 第 9 页 共 12 页
increasingly, with wealthier families, preferential admission.”
The solution, Farrey thinks, is turning down the volume. Play the games, but cool the
win-at-all-costs competitiveness. Prioritize inclusion and free play. Don’t make kids specialize on
one sport. Let them play everything. “The game-changers in all of this are parents,” says Farrey.
“They think they understand what athletic development looks like but they don't know about the
value of free play in developing creativity. They don’t fully appreciate the value of playing
multiple sports.”
51. Which is NOT the reason why more kids are giving up organized sports early?
A. Financial difficulty.
B. Stress.
C. Scholarship.
D. Injuries.
52. What do the statistics in Paragraph 4 show?
A. All the kids are giving up youth sports at around age 11.
B. Less and less kids take part in team sports activities in America.
C. The participation of youth team sports decreases in parts of America.
D. The youth team sports participation has declined by 45 percent in the past decade.
53. What does the underlined phrase “turning down the volume” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Parents should reduce the expenses invested in sports.
B. The youth should pay more attention to school work rather than sports.
C. Parents should encourage their kids to treat the results of game lightly.
D. Colleges should rule out athletic scores or awards as a standard of scholarship.
54. Which of the following may Tom Farrey agree with?
A. The poor family had better quit sports as early as possible.
B. Some parents’ craziness for sports has brought about ill competition.
C. Competitive environment enables the youth to realize their potential in sports.
D. Colleges should include sports as criteria because free play can inspire creativity.
55. Where does this passage most probably come from?
A. A sport magazine.
B. A travel brochure.
C. A journal about health.
D. A website about specialists.

阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容完成下列各题。
Rock climbing requires not only physical strength, but also complete mental concentration.
So it is not an easy sport. But this may not be true for 20-year-old Sasha DiGuilian. This fearless
girl who has been dominating the sport ever since she entered this field is just getting warmed up.
The youngster who is also studying for a creative writing degree at Columbia University says
that she began climbing even before she could walk. As a baby, she constantly escaped from her
bed and led her friends to the nearest rocks or hills. Then at the age of seven she attended
brother’s birthday party at a local rock climbing gym and found her gift for it.
Soon after, she joined the local center in her hometown of Alexandria, Virginia and began
climbing — first once a week, then twice and soon, almost every day. At the age of nine, she won
her first climbing competition by participating in an event that she hadn’t even been aware of,
until she went to the gym for her normal climbing routine. Her competitive nature and love for the
sport immediately reached the peak and she began training seriously, but this time outside the
gym — climbing real mountains.
As a youngster, she won the Junior Continental Championships from 2004 to 2010. Then she
went on to catch the Pan American Championship and the US National Championship as soon as
she was old enough. And in 2011, at just 18 years old, she was crowned Female Overall World
Champion in Arco, Italy at her first attempt.
Sasha DiGuilian is also the youngest woman who has completed the 5.14d graded climb in
which climbers must climb rocks that are vertical. The 5.14d graded climb is regarded as the most
difficult climb and it is something that even the most experienced climbers are a little afraid to
take on, because a small slip could result in a severe injury or even death.
56. What does the underlined word “dominating” in Paragraph 1 mean? (1 word)
57. When did Sasha DiGuilian find she had the talent for rock climbing? (no more than 12
words)
58. What made Sasha DiGuilian begin training seriously to climb real mountains? (no more
than 10 words)
59. Why is the 5.14d graded climb considered the most difficult climb? (no more than 7 words)
60. How are you inspired by Sasha DiGuilian? Please explain. (no more than25 words)
