One day I was staying at home when I heard someone knocking at the door.
When I opened the door, I saw a shy little girl of about ten standing there. She looked at me fearfully, and after about fifteen seconds, she collected the courage to tell me that she was selling cookies. She began to introduce her products, only two dollars a box. Some studies have shown a decline (下降) in insect populations over the past few years. Others have recorded a decline in bird populations. But scientists hadn’t connected the two — until recently.
The researchers found that the reduction of plants would lead to the reduction of insects, and in the end, the populations of land birds would be reduced. Because these birds mainly feed on insects.
Recent studies show that in the past 50 years, the United States and Canada have lost 39 percent of their bird populations. Ninety percent of them are land birds, which need the insects to eat and feed their young.
Two American scientists, Tallamy and Shriver, divided some birds into two groups: those that need insects and those that don’t. They found that the number of birds that don’t need insects has actually increased by about 26 million over the past 50 years.
