One day I was staying at home when I heard someone knocking at the door.
When I opened the door, I saw a shy little girl of about ten standing there. She looked at me fearfully, and after about fifteen seconds, she collected the courage to tell me that she was selling cookies. She began to introduce her products, only two dollars a box. Finally, she asked me to buy a box. However, I didn’t have two dollars. I’d been out of work since I graduated from college.
I couldn’t tell that to the girl. So I waved to her and said, “Thanks, but I already bought cookies. I still have a lot of boxes.” It was the only thing I can do to get me out of this mess. The girl said, “It’s all right, sir. Thank you so much.” And she left.
I stood there for a long time. Finally, I shut the door behind me and leaned (倚) back against it. I shouted, “I don’t want to live like this any more. I don’t want to tell a lie any more. I will never be embarrassed about not having money in my pocket again.” That day I decided to change my life.
That day had a lasting effect on the rest of my life. A few years later, as I was crossing the street to get into my car, I passed two little girls selling candies. One of them said to me, “Do you want to buy some candies, sir?” “Yes,” I said, “I want them all.” Both girls said, “You’re really great, sir!”

Some studies have shown a decline (下降) in insect populations over the past few years. Others have recorded a decline in bird populations. But scientists hadn’t connected the two — until recently.
The researchers found that the reduction of plants would lead to the reduction of insects, and in the end, the populations of land birds would be reduced. Because these birds mainly feed on insects.
Recent studies show that in the past 50 years, the United States and Canada have lost 39 percent of their bird populations. Ninety percent of them are land birds, which need the insects to eat and feed their young.
Two American scientists, Tallamy and Shriver, divided some birds into two groups: those that need insects and those that don’t. They found that the number of birds that don’t need insects has actually increased by about 26 million over the past 50 years. However, the number of birds and other living things that need insects to survive has fallen by 2. 9 billion.
According to the research above, we can see that the decline in insect-eating birds is closely connected to the decline in plant life. So basically, protecting birds should start with protecting plants.
( ) 67. What have scientists found recently about the decline in bird populations?
A. It is good for plants. B. It has nothing to do with the environment.
C. It is more important than the reduction of plants. D. It is closely connected to the decline in insect populations.
( ) 68. How did Tallamy and Shriver divide the birds into two groups?
A. According to their shapes. B. According to their diets.
C. According to their populations. D. According to their sizes.
( ) 69. What does the writer advise us to do?
A. To protect the plants first. B. To give more help to insects.
C. To do more research on weather. D. To study birds’ living habits further.
E
Compared to text messages or emails, speech communication makes a stronger social connection according to a recent study.
In the research, a group of people were asked to communicate with an old friend by texting or by email, and then another group of people were asked to communicate with a friend over video or voice call. The last group of people were asked to talk with strangers.
They found that voice communication was more likely to bring people closer than email or text messaging, even with strangers.
“Texting seems to be more of a part of our lives”, researchers said. “But for truly connecting with people, the value of voice is the key.”
The findings are very important right now because more and more people are living a busy life. They have less time to communicate with each other. When it comes to talking on the phone, many people may feel stressed. But listening to friends or family members can actually improve people’s mental (心理的) health. A short talk is an easy way to help people go through difficult situations.
( ) 70. What’s the researchers’ advice for people?
A. Value friendships. B. Never send text messages.
C. Text less, talk more. D. Remember telephone numbers.
( ) 71. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A. A short talk means a lot.
B. The topics of conversations can be anything.
C. Mental health problems should be paid more attention to.
D. Making a phone call makes people nervous.
( ) 72. In which part of a magazine can we read the passage?
A. Nature. B. Sports and Habits. C. Society and Health. D. Environment.
