After over 10 years of service, my old computer finally died. My daughter talked me into buying a new laptop to replace it (取代). What followed was two days of stress.
After my daughter set up my new computer, I looked for the old email program I used, only to find that it wasn’t on this model. When I tried to download (下载) the program again, it wouldn’t work. I spent the next day talking to four different customer service workers, but no one could help. I also had a terrible time downloading my old typing program. Then I had a problem moving all of my old stories from a different hard drive. In the end, my daughter had to set it up all over again.
One thing I learned from all of this is that when it comes to computers and life, I want to keep things simple. I don’t want to wake up in the morning and worry about what I have to do. Instead I want to pet my dogs, take them outside, and watch the sun slowly rise. I want to spend time hugging my family. Be a person, not a program.

YINCHUAN-In the local Tanglai Hui Primary School, 12-year-old Duan Jiayang learns the skills required to take care of vegetable fields. “I learned how to place the mulch film (地膜),” says Jiayang, “It’s not easy.”
In China, many parents place heavy importance on their children’s good results, while vocational (职业的) skills have little been cared. “Some parents do everything for their children,” says Yan Mei, an official of the primary school, adding that many students are short of the basic skills needed in their daily lives.
Therefore, when it comes to the May Day holiday, students of various grades at Jiayang’s school work together in the fields. They plant watermelon, carrot, corn and other crops.
“We will ask students to get involved in the whole process (过程) of the plants’ growth,” Yan says. “Life-skill education is not simply about working in the fields, but also experiencing and observing (观察) life. The school hopes that students will get to know how valuable food is so that they will better understand the hardship their parents went through,” Yan adds.
On a campus of the No. 21 Primary School in Yinchuan, students are attending a special life-skill class: how to make steamed buns. “I really love my life-skill course,” Lian Yan says. “We can learn to make steamed buns and grow plants here.”
Children usually just study at home and doing chores is an unhappy task, says a mother of a student in the school. “Vocational courses turn such ‘tasks’ into an interest, and then a hobby, and finally a life skill,” she says. “It will be a good thing for their future.”

While waiting to pick up a friend at the airport in Portland, Oregon, I had an experience which happened only two feet away from me.
Trying to find my friend among the passengers coming through the jet way, I noticed a man walking toward me carrying two light bags. He stopped right next to me to greet his family. First he kissed his three children one by one and said, “It’s nice to see you. I missed you so much!” Then he hugged (拥抱) his wife, giving her the longest, most passionate kiss I ever remember seeing. They looked at each other’s eyes, smiling at one another, while holding both hands. For an instant they reminded me of newlyweds (新婚夫妇), but I knew by the age of their kids that they couldn’t possibly be.
Full of admiration, I asked, “Wow! How long have you two been married?” “Being together for fourteen years in total, married twelve of those.” He replied, without moving his eyes away from his lovely wife’s face. “Well, then, how long have you been away?” I asked. “Two whole days!” “Two days?” I was surprised. By the intensity (热烈) of the greeting, I had thought he’d been gone for at least several weeks or months. I knew my expression (表情) betrayed me, so I turned away my eyes and said quietly, “I hope my marriage is still that passionate (有激情的) after so long!”
The man suddenly stopped smiling and looked at me straight in the eye. With forcefulness he told me something that left me a different person. “Don’t hope, friend. Decide!” Then he smiled again, shook my hand and said, “God bless!”
With that, he and his family turned and walked away together.
I was still watching that man and his special family walk just out of sight when my friend came up to me and asked, “What are you looking at?” Without hesitation, and with certainty, I replied, “My future!”
