On the day the tornado hit, there was no sign that the fierce weather was on its way
—the sky was blue and the sun had been out. The first warning my husband, Jimmy, 67, and I, 65, got came around 9 p.m., from some text on the TV Jimmy was watching. He ran upstairs to find me in our third-floor bedroom, and we changed the channel from the national
television to our local Pensacola, Florida, station.
Soon the tornado was on top of us. It was the loudest thing I had ever heard. The house shook, and the power went out. And the wind began to roar (咆哮) through the house, most
likely through windows and the door to our garage. Everything was moving. And the back
wall of the house came off and flew into the darkness outside. We had three flights of steps to get to the storeroom down there, the relative safety of the first floor.
I didn't know how or if we would make it down the steps. It felt as if there was no floor
as the wind lifted me off my feet. As we finally reached the last flight of steps, our front door blew open. Suddenly, a three-foot-long tree branch (树枝) flew over our heads, missing us by
inches.
By the time I reached the storeroom, the tornado had been over us for about a minute, Jimmy pushed me down to the storeroom floor, but he couldn't get inside himself because of the wind. I held Jimmy's arm as the tornado blew the door open. My knees were full of glass, but I felt no pain. If I had let go, Jimmy would have flown right out of the house.
All of a sudden, Jimmy lifted off his feet. I thought he was gone. And then everything
stopped. He landed on his feet. In those first quiet moments, I couldn't believe it was over.
Our neighbor said the storm lasted four minutes. In that time, four of the twelve town houses in our unit were completely destroyed. Luckily, none of us were seriously injured.
4.Where did the couple learn about the coming fierce weather?
A.From the dark sky. B.From the radio station.
C.From the news report on TV. D.From the text sent by their neighbors.
5.What can we infer from Paragraph 2 about the couple?
A.They had no place to hide. B.They tried to get out of the house.
C.Their garage was blown into pieces. D.Their house was badly destroyed.
6.What do we know about Jimmy when the author reached the storeroom?
A.He was in great danger. B.He flew out of the house.
C.He was seriously injured. D.He got inside the storeroom.
7.What is the best title of this text?
A.The tornado hitting Florida B.A couple stopping a disaster
C.The wind roaring through the house D.A couple keeping alive from a disaster

Wu Dajing created a world record of winning the short-track speed skating men’s 500 meters for China’s first gold medal of the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics. He is the first Chinese man who has won a short-track gold medal in the Winter Olympic Games.
In 2004, at the age of ten, Dajing entered the Jiamusi short-track speed skating amateur
(业余的) team. Before 4 o’clock, he got up with his ice knives and rode his bike to face the cold wind and the outdoor ice rink (溜冰场) which was 30 degrees below zero.
After coming to the national team, Dajing quickly realized the difference of racing level
between top players and him. He felt so upset, so when training again, he took the computer and asked someone to help him record some videos. After the training, he watched the videos again and again, made a summary, and then compared them with the winners’ videos in the competitions to study the details and skills.
So in the second part of the 2012 season, Dajing got the chance to play for the national
team for the first time. Dajing won a silver medal in the 500m in the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014, and since then, he has won 10 men’s 500m races in the World Championships and the World Cup.
Three years from now, the Beijing-zhangjiakou Winter Olympics will be the next stage
for Dajing. “Three years is neither short nor long. I just need to make several small goals and then finish them step by step.” he said. Life is the same, on the way to success, once you’ve
made up your mind, just keep doing and never give up.
8.When did Wu Dajing win the gold medal in the Winter Olympic Games?
A.In 2018 B.In 2014 C.In 2013 D.In 2012
9.How did Wu Dajing make great progress in skating skills?
A.By taking skating as an amateur hobby.
B.By watching many videos for enjoyment.
C.By managing to join in the national team.

Every week in China , millions of people will sit in front of their TVs watching teenagers compete for the title Character Hero which is a Chinese-style spelling bee (拼写大
赛) .In this challenge, young competitors must write Chinese characters by hand. To prepare
for the competition ,the competitors usually spend months studying dictionaries.
Perhaps the show's popularity should not be a surprise. Along with gunpowder and paper, many Chinese people consider the creation of Chinese calligraphy (书法) to be one of their
primary contributions to civilization. Unfortunately , all over the country, Chinese people are
forgetting how to write their own language without computerized help. Software on smart phones and computers allows users to type in the basic sound of the word using the Latin alphabet. The correct character is chosen from a list. The result? It's possible to recognize characters without remembering how to write them.
But there's still hope for the writing brush. China's Ministry of Education wants children
to spend more time learning how to write.
In one Beijing primary school we visited , students practise calligraphy every day inside
a specially decorated classroom with traditional Chinese paintings hanging on the walls. They
look up at the blackboard often to study their teacher's examples before carefully attempting
to reproduce those characters on thin rice paper. "If adults can survive without using handwriting ,why bother to teach it now?" we ask the calligraphy teacher Shen Bin. "The ability to write characters is part of Chinese tradition and culture. " she reasons. "Students must learn now so they don't forget when they grow up”, says the teacher.
12. What can we learn about the Chinese-style spelling bee?
- It's open to people of all ages and all walks.
- It's the most-viewed TV programme in China.
- It aims to spread Chinese culture to the world.
- It draws great public attention across the country.
13. Why are Chinese people forgetting how to write the characters?
- Chinese people don't refer to dictionaries very often.
- Chinese people no longer use brush pens or practise calligraphy.
- Chinese people are using the Latin alphabet instead of the characters.
- Chinese people needn't write by hand as often with the help of technology.
14. According to Shen Bin ,being able to write characters by hand is ________ .
- necessary for adults to survive in China
- a requirement made by the Ministry of Education
- helpful to keep Chinese tradition and culture alive
- an ability to be developed only when you are students
15. Where does this text probably come from?.
A. A news report. B. A science report. C. An advertisement. D. Children's
literature
