Speaking of celebration, festivals have a lot to offer. Here we uncover some festivals across the globe.
Holi Festival — India — February — March
A rainbow of colour and Hindu traditions combine to create this celebration of love, springtime fun and the victory of good over evil. Kicking off with a night-time bonfire where people gather, sing and dance, the next day is a carnival of colors where everyone has fun throwing color powder, squirting (喷射) water guns and coloured water-filled balloons. A great number of people are infected by its playful and childlike atmosphere.
La Tomatina — Buñol, Spain — August
Tomato fiends get their fill on the last Wednesday of August as over 100,000 kg of tomatoes are thrown and squished(压烂) in the town square. It’s the highlight of a week-long celebration of Buñol’s patron saint, which leaves the town in a bright red like a horror film scene. We don’t envy whoever has to clean up that mess!
Dia De Los Muertos — Mexico — October — November
Translated to ‘Day of the Dead’, this seemingly scary festival is a day to celebrate and remember those who have passed away with parades, costumes and paper decorations. It is believed that the spirits of the dead visit their families on October 31 and leave on November 2, so many spend this time visiting cemeteries – where there is often music and dances to honour the spirits.

Wayne Boone knew he should be dead. His cab(驾驶室)had crashed into the guardrail on the far right edge, destroying the metal barrier that protected his truck from dropping into the water below, almost flying through the air. It all happened so fast. How was he still alive? Somehow, the back of his cab had got stuck on the bridge’s edge before it could complete its falling. His empty trailer(拖车), meanwhile, leaned to the left, sliding sideways at a 90-degree angle to the cab.
Whatever the force was that held the cab on the edge, Boone knew it couldn’t last. He was injured, but his body had yet to fully noticed the pain. He forced himself to focus. If he had any chance of escaping the cab and surviving, he had to get free from his seat belt. The cracked windshield(挡风玻璃)beneath him exposed the dark waters below. If he put any weight on the glass, he risked bursting through and falling the rest of the way. Under the howl of the wind, he heard voices from above. “It’s about to go!”
Got to get free. Releasing his seat belt, Boone tried to hold on to the seat, but he immediately slid into the windshield. The glass shifted in its frame. He climbed upward, aware that he was getting cut along the way. He slipped again. And again. Each time his feet met the windshield, the glass gave a little more. The next time could be the last. Gathering all his strength, he pulled himself between the seats and threw himself back as far as he could behind the driver’s seat.
Minutes passed—to Boone, it felt like hours—before he heard the approaching whistle. To his ears, the harsh sound could have been angels singing. Hearing people shout with joy when they saw a firefighter deliver him to safety, Boone felt his heart full of gratitude. He was rushed to the hospital.
24. Where did the accident happened?
A. In the street. B. In the river. C. On the bridge. D. In the hospital.
25. Which of the following is true according to the text?
A. The trailer was flying through the air.
B. Boone was badly injured during the crash.
C. A certain force could stop the cab falling finally.
D. Boone released his seat belt to jump into the river.
26. Why did Boone threw himself back to the seat behind the driver’s?
A. To say hello to the people above.
B. To stop the cab falling into the river.
C. To avoid falling through the windshield.
D. To protect the windshield from being broken.
27. What did Boone feel when he heard the approaching whistle?
A. Disappointed. B. Scared. C. Worried. D. Hopeful.

To complete the great map of the world was a strong passion for the people of early civilizations. Marco Polo’s tales inspired European explorers to search for sea routes from west to east. However, merchants search for sea routes from west to east. However, merchants and explorers from the East set sail from east to west many years before Columbus first did.
In ancient times, silk from China found its way overland to India, the Middle East, and Rome, along what became known as the Silk Road. A trading route across the sea was also extended along the coasts of the Indian Ocean, centred around Ceylon (now Sri Lanka ). Here, merchants from China and many other places met to negotiate trade deals, which also led to more awareness of each other’s cultures. Over the centuries, further trading allowed more exploration of the regions to the west China.
Later, the Ming Dynasty further developed relations with these regions. Between 1405 and 1433, seven large fleets sailed west on voyages of trade and exploration. These fleets were a sight to behold and were in a league of their own at that time. Under the command of Zheng He, they set sail from the South China Sea across the Indian Ocean to the mouth of the Red Sea, and then to the east coast of Africa. African royal families sent gifts such as giraffes as gestures of friendship in return for gold, silk, and spices. Although China withdrew from further expeditions after 1433, these land and sea routes remained active channels between other cultures for centuries.
To reach out across the sea remains a strong desire today. The ancient sea routes travelled by Zheng He are being revisited with the 2lst Century Maritime Silk Road, which is part of the Belt and Road Initiative. The aim of this initiative is to encourage cooperation and trade across the historic Silk Road areas, and strengthen the bonds between China and the rest of the world. Trading has grown greatly in recent years, and will continue to do so in years to come.
28. How is the passage developed?
A. Cause and effect. B. Time sequence.
C. Problem and solution. D. Compare and contrast.
29. Which word can be used to describe Zheng He’s fleets?
A. Impressive. B. Worrisome. C. Aggressive. D. Fearful.
30. Which is Not the purpose of the Belt and Road Initiative?
A. To expand China’s territorial area on the ocean.
B. To promote communication with other countries.
C. To strengthen further cooperation with other countries
D. To encourage trade across the historic Silk Road areas.
31. Which is the best title of the text?
A. The Maritime Silk Road B. The great map of the world
C. Reaching out across the sea D. The Belt and Road Initiative

Chinese scientists are mounting efforts to establish a weather monitoring station at an altitude of 8,800 meters on Mount Qomolangma, the world’s highest peak, on the China-Nepal border.
If the station is established successfully, it will replace the one at an altitude of 8,430 meters set up by UK and US scientists on the south side of the mountain in 2019, to be the world’s highest of its kind, according to the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research (ITP), Chi- nese Academy of Sciences(CAS).
Equipment weighing some 50 kg will be dismantled and distributed to mountaineers, each of whom will carry no more than 7 kg up onto the mountain for the establishment, said Zhao Huabiao, a researcher with the ITP.
Currently, the engineers in charge of establishing the station are still waiting for the perfect weather for mountaineering.
Including the highest, eight elevation gradient(高程梯度) weather stations will be set up on Mount Qomolangma, one of the main tasks in China’s new comprehensive scientific expedition on the world’s highest peak at the height of 8,848.86 meters.
Three meteorological(气象的)stations were established at sea levels of 7,028 meters, 7,790 meters and 8,300 meters, respectively, earlier this year on the north side of the mountain, bringing the total number of operational weather stations between the altitudes between 5,200 meters and 8,300 meters to seven. Last year, four stations at sea levels of 6,500 meters, 5,800 meters, 5,400 meters and 5,200 meters were set up.
The eight stations will collect the wind speed and wind direction data, as well as relative humidity(湿度) on the north side of Qomolangma, and the elevation gradient weather station system is of great significance for monitoring the melting glaciers(冰川) and mountain snow at the high altitudes, said Zhao.
The expedition team will also set up glacier radar and measure the thickness of snow and ice at the summit of the mountain, he said.
32. What do we know about the new weather monitoring station?
A. It will collect weather data on the south side of Qomolangma.
B. It will become the highest of its kind at an altitude of 8,800 kilometers.
C. It will make great contributions to the scientific research on Qomolangma.
D. It will be the only weather station set up above the altitude of 8,000 meters.
33. What does the underlined word “dismantled ” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Taken apart. B. Taken over. C. Set down. D. Set aside.
34. How many weather monitoring stations has China set up on Mount Qomolangma?
A. 6. B. 7. C. 8. D. 9.
35. Which of the following data can NOT be collected by the weather station?
A. Wind speed. B. Wind direction.
C. Relative humidity. D. The thickness of snow.

Lora’s house stood on a wooded slope not far up from the river. On a sunny morning in July, she decided to take her three kids down to the river, Mikey aged 13, Paul 8 and Lisa 5. As a nature lover, she insisted they spend as much time as possible outdoors. “We are going to pick berries now,” she announced.
The group made its way over the dusty road and then onto a dirt trail through the trees. Stopping the children at the first berry bush, “Look, the berries are all over,” she said. Mikey broke into a run to the berries. Lora and the little ones hurried to keep up. She helped Lisa find some clusters(串;簇) on the lowest branches. Paul watched and then tasted a berry. “Mmm, good,” he said, and got busy picking more.
Lora and the children moved slowly from bush to bush. Within 20 minutes, the children had filled their jars and were almost at the river. “OK,” Lora commanded after the group climbed down to the sandbank, “Let’s play just right here.”
Lora rested herself not far from the children, listening to their laughing and playing. Suddenly, she sensed the children go quiet. She looked up to see the back of a big-sized cat standing over Lisa. It was a young cougar(美洲狮). The sight of the cougar near her kids immediately froze Lora. The three kids, rooted to the spot, were too nervous to say a word. She knew she must do something.

Dear fellow students,
With many of us students engaged in our studies, some stay up late into night and ignore physical exercise. Therefore, I am appealing to us students to live an active and healthy life.
For one thing, it’s of vital importance to sleep as early as possible, which can make you energetic the whole day. Staying up late frequently makes it hard for you to focus on your class. For another, we are supposed to attach great importance to workout, which not only helps build up our body but also help us better adapt to the burden of study.
Given all the above benefits, all of you are highly recommended to plan your study time properly and taking exercise regularly.

第二节:
Paragraph 1:The first idea that hit Lora was to attract the cougar’s attention away from her kids. Lora rushed herself toward it, blindly seizing it by the neck. “Come stay behind me!” She shouted to the kids. On hearing it, the three children ran to Lora screaming. Just as she was about to shake the beast from side to side when it turned around abruptly, hurting her ear with its paw. Lora didn’t have time to care about it. Still grasping the cat’s back legs, she turned to Mikey, “Run back home! Run!” Mikey quickly bent down to hold Lisa in his arms and shouted to Paul, “Run.”The three kids looked back again and again as they were rushing backward.
Paragraph 2:Just as Lora was struggling with the beast with almost her last strength, she saw the three kids running back, each holding a stick. They came back to help their mother. The three kids screamed and swung their sticks at the cougar. It was probably their aggressive movements and harsh scream that scared the big cat. The cougar leapt onto the tree and ran away. Lora hugged her brave kids tightly. It was the greatest challenge Lora and her kids had met in their lives. Her friends and neighbors applauded their strength. And Lora knew that they could overcome any difficulty from that day on.

Text 1
M:Shall we go to watch a movie this evening?
W:I can’t agree more. But I have to go to the grocery first to pick up some drinks and eggs for mother.
Text 2
M:Nice weather, isn’t it? Hey, what are you looking at?
W:I’m interested in this news. Say, the newest and the smallest dog can walk in the street and talk with us humans. How interesting!
Text 3
W:I spent ages waiting for the sun to go down, as I wanted the light to be exactly right.
M:So did you get beautiful sunsets?
W:I was really surprised when I collected the prints to discover that my patience has been completely wasted.
Text 4
W:I’m so hungry! Why is it taking so long? We’re going to be late to the movies.
M:It’s really crowded in here. Maybe they’re short of help. Can you try to get the manager’s attention?
Text 5
W:Oh, no! I think we’ve just missed the bus.
M:How can that be? It says here that the bus is arriving at 10:55. My watch says we’re five minutes ahead of time. Wait a minute, the town hall clock is striking eleven.
Text 6
M:Kim, when did you start doing this?
W:A few months ago. I’d never picked up a brush before.
M:What made you start?
W:I’m not sure. My brother was the artistic one and I didn’t think I was the same type. You know, I was on the basketball team and did quite well. But I’ve always wanted to paint or draw. Last month, I decided I wanted to take a class at the community center. It was this or yoga. I decided on this. I feel like I’ve learned how to relax by painting.
M:You’re not bad, you know.
W:Thanks.
Text 7
M:I don’t think I’d recommend that hotel to anyone.
W:You can’t expect luxury for that price. Anyway, it was easy to get into the city center to see all the sights.
M:It was a good starting point for exploring. But the people working there weren’t terribly helpful when we asked them for directions.
W:The lady on the reception desk was nice. And you must admit, she gave us a room overlooking the garden at the back.
M:It’s a shame about the tiny bathroom, though. The beds could’ve been softer, too.
W:Well, we should read some reviews online before booking.
Text 8
M:So what’s your favorite airline?
W:Well, I haven’t flown with that many. I mostly take Southwest Airlines when I travel to Charlotte for work.
M:Do you like it?
W:Sure. There are a lot of advantages to flying with Southwest. For one, they don’t charge for checked bags.
M:Oh, my boss will appreciate that.
W:Where are you going, anyway?
M:Dallas. But a lot of the airlines I looked at have stops in Denver.
W:Southwest has many direct flights to Dallas, so that will save you some time.
M:That sounds good. Anything else that you like about them?
W:Well, I like that Southwest has one of the best safety records. That’s actually the main thing I appreciate about them.
M:That seems pretty important… OK, you’ve convinced me. I’ll have our travel secretary book a flight for me soon.
Text 9
M:Susan, any plans for this Saturday? I was wondering if you’d like to have a picnic with me.
W:I’d love to, but I’m going to be really busy all day on Saturday.
M:What do you have to do?
W:First, my mom asked me to help clean the house in the morning, and then I have a dentist appointment at 12:30. I can’t miss that because I’ve canceled twice already.
M:Well, what about after that?
W:I need to meet with Julie at 2:00 p.m. We need to discuss a project, which might cost one hour.
M:OK, but are you free after that?
W:Hardly. I have to pick up my brother from soccer practice at 4:00, and my mom asked me to cook dinner for the family at 5:00. Then I have to clean the dishes and finish reading my math assignment. I’m not good at it. Who knows how long that’ll take?
M:Don’t you know that my major is math? I can help you with that.
W:Oh, yeah.
M:I’ll come over after dinner.
W:Thanks. It’s great to have you next door.

We offer a fun and relaxing atmosphere for children to learn English. No one would ever learn a language without making mistakes. At our camps, we don’t ask the children to speak English perfectly. We only ask them to do the best. Join our twenty-day camps for the summer of your life.
Dear fellow students,
On behalf of the Students’ Union, I’m writing to make a proposal with the theme that we should do our part to protect the environment. Taking the increasingly serious environmental
problems into consideration, we should start with the small things. To begin with, save natural resources in our daily life before it is too late. Then, it is particularly important to arouse people’s awareness of environmental protection. Therefore, we must call on people around us to devote themselves to building a shared green home. Work together, and there will be a beautiful green home. Just take action now!
