During the 1930s, the Great War broke out. A 25-year-old American soldier, probably never thought that his life would change forever when he volunteered to go to France.
One night while the American unit was returning to the base after a bloody fight, Suleyman stumbled(绊倒) into the ground and noticed a bit of movement from the bush. Being stuck between two choices either its enemy or an animal, Suleyman found a five- year old girl from the bushes shivering(颤抖) with cold and utmost fear. Due to the atrocity of the war, the girl was abandoned by her family and the whole village was killed.
During the war, it was impossible to find the child's family so Suleyman took this little French girl under his wings and gave her an American name Flora which means like the flower. Soon, Flora became the apple of the eye of everyone living in the army camp.
For one and a half years, Flora and Suleyman became inseparable; however, every fairy tale comes to an end. When the war ended, Suleyman was sent back to USA, while Flora was put in an orphanage (孤儿院), the Normandy School, which was founded by the American government for orphaned French children to have an education.
For years, Suleyman always thought about Flora. When the French National Olympic Team was playing in the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 1984, Suleyman gazed through the audience on TV, hoping to catch a glimpse of Flora, but he never could.
At the age of 85, Suleyman attended the 60th anniversary reception of the Great War where Suleyman shared his story with American and French officials. Online, English has become a common language for users from around the world. In the process, the language itself is changing. There are now thought to be some 4.5 billion web pages worldwide. Some language experts predict that within 10 years English will occupy the internet — but in forms very different to what we accept and recognize as English today.
That’s because people who speak English as a second language already outnumber native speakers. And increasingly, they use it to communicate with other non-native speakers, particularly on the internet where less attention is paid to grammar and spelling and users don’t have to worry about their accent (口音).
Users of Facebook already socialize in a number of different “Englishes” including Indian English, Spanish English and Korean English. While these different styles have long existed within their cultures, they’re now expanding and coming online. Technology companies are introducing newly-developed English words with products aimed at enabling users to add words that are not already in the English dictionary. And most large companies have English websites, while smaller businesses are learning that they need a common language — English — to reach global customers.
The increasing popularity of the internet allows more languages to develop quickly.“Most people actually speak several languages — it’s less common to only speak one,” says Mr. Munro. “English has taken its place as the world’s common language, but it’s not pushing out other languages.” Instead, other languages are pushing their way into English, and in the process creating something new.
28. Which of the following is NOT true about online communication?
A. People need to spell exactly. B. Grammar is not so important.
C. People do not care about their accent. D. Most English-speakers are not native speakers.
29. What can we infer from the text?
A. We can only communicate online in English.
B. It’s impossible to find all the English words in the dictionary.
C. Some technology companies start to publish English dictionaries.
D. Smaller businesses are not allowed to have English websites.
30. What can we learn from what Mr. Munro said?
A. The other languages are enriching English.
B. One can’t live well without speaking several languages.
C. English will become the only language in the world.
D Chinese used to be the world’s common language.
31. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. English is a common language around the world.
B. There are now many different language styles.
C. English language is developing with the Internet.
D. Smaller businesses are learning a common language.
D
Recordings (录音) of angry bees are enough to send big, tough African elephants running away, a new study says. Beehives (蜂窝) either recorded or real may even prevent elephants from damaging farmer’s crops.
Years ago, scientist Lucy King and her team found that elephants avoid certain trees with bees living in them. Today, Lucy wants to see if African honeybees might stop elephants from eating crops. But before she asked farmers to set up beehives on their farms, she needed to find out if the bees would frighten elephants away.
Lucy found a wild beehive inside a tree in northern Kenya and set up a recorder. Then she threw a stone into the beehive, which burst into life. Lucy and her assistant hid in their car until the angry bees had calmed down. Next, Lucy searched out elephant families in Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya and put a speaker in a tree close to each family.
From a distance, Lucy turned on the pre-recorded sound of angry bees while at the same time recording the elephants with a video camera. Half the elephant groups left the area within ten seconds.Out of a total of 17 groups, only one group didn’t react to the sound of the angry bees. Lucy reported that all the young elephants immediately ran to their mothers to hide under them. When Lucy played the sound of a waterfall (瀑布) instead of the angry bees to many of the same elephant families, the animals were undisturbed. Even after four minutes, most of the groups stayed in one place.
Lucy is now studying whether the elephants will continue to avoid the sound of angry bees after hearing it several times. She hasn’t tested enough groups yet to know and she has now begun placing speakers in the fields to see if elephants are frightened away.
32.Why did Lucy throw a stone into a wild beehive?
A. To record the sound of angry bees. B. To make a video of elephants.
C. To see if elephants would run away. D. To find out more about the behavior of bees.
33.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Groups of elephants will make bees angry.
B. Waterfalls can make elephants stay in one place.
C. Elephants do not go near trees with bees living in them.
D. Young elephants ignore African honeybees.
34. According to the passage, Lucy ________.
A. works by herself in Africa B. needs to test more elephant groups
C. has stopped elephants eating crops D. has got farmers to set up beehives on their farms
35.What can be the title of the passage?
A. Bees are the King of the Forest B. How to Keep Elephants Away
C. Don’t Get Close to Angry Bees D. Angry Bees Frighten Big Elephants Away

As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks.
One day, Justin took Lily’s shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It was not until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Lily agreed and the two decided to share Justin’s running shoes. Lily’s school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Justin. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Justin often arrived late and was warned by the school.
A long distance race was going to be held for the boys in the city. When Justin learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Justin had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Lily and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two faster runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided (碰撞)with Justin from behind and Justin crashed to the ground.

Justin looked up and he saw the other boys rushing ahead. Refusing to give up at this crucial point, Justin clenched his teeth, jumped to his feet and ran as fast as he could. Finally, he was the fourth one to dash across the finish line. Justin couldn’t help sobbing at the thought of letting his sister down. But much to his surprise, the runner who collided with him was disqualified for breaking the rule and Justin won the third prize. Justin was on the top of the world and relieved during the award ceremony , holding the shoes close to his chest.
Filled with pleasure, Justin walked home in no time. He could not wait to see his sister and share the good news. On his arrival, Justin found Lily was walking about outside nervously and anxiously. “Lily, see what I have got for you.” Justin said excitedly, taking the prize out of his bag with his trembling hands. The instant Lily saw the shoes, her face lit up. So thrilled was she that she threw herself at Justin. “Thank you! Justin.” Tears of joy welled up in their eyes as the brother and the sister hugged tightly together.

The story was set in the years before cars were invented, so the rich had to travel in coaches. One day, a young lady wanted to watch a play in the theater. Her coachman took her to the theater in a coach. It was very cold. ⑱While she was watching the play, the poor coachman had to sit outside in the snow on the driver's seat of the coach looking after the horse. Inside the theater, the lady was moved to tears by the performance. Some actors in the play were in extremely poor situations. She showed great pity on them. ⑲However, when she came out and saw the coachman covered with snow and almost frozen to death, she just considered it as a normal part of life.
Nowadays, whenever I see people in terrible situations on TV, I feel sad, wishing that I could do something to make a difference. ⑳But I often ignore people and things around me, like people who struggle with life.
